Minor Deals: Halsey, Cintron

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 3, 2011 at 5:40pm CDT

We'll keep track of the day's minor league deals right here:

  • The Yankees have signed left-hander Brad Halsey to a minor league contract, according to the AP (via the Washington Post). Halsey began his MLB career with the Yankees, who drafted him in 2002, but he hasn't appeared in a big league game since 2006. The 30-year-old has a 4.84 ERA with 5.0 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 286 1/3 career innings for the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Athletics.
  • The Padres signed Alex Cintron to a minor league deal, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter). Cintron, 32, last appeared in the big leagues as a member of the 2009 Nationals. The nine-year veteran has a .275/.313/.394 line and experience at every infield position. He played for the Mets' Triple-A affiliate last year.

Nationals Sign Alex Cintron

By Dan Mennella | February 8, 2011 at 5:39pm CDT

The Nationals have signed infielder Alex Cintron to a minor league deal, tweets Jon Heyman of SI.com.

Cintron, 32, last appeared in the Major Leagues with Washington in 2009. The utility infielder spent last season in the Mets organization, playing in 20 games with Triple-A Buffalo.

The Nationals plan to give rookie Danny Espinosa a shot at the second-base job this season, but he is inexperienced and coming off hand surgery, so Cintron was presumably added for the sake of organizational depth in the event Espinosa is not ready to go by Opening Day.

Cintron broke into the big leagues with the Diamondbacks in 2001 and remained with Arizona through 2005. He's bounced around since then, spending time in a handful of organizations.

  • The Reds signed Aaron Harang's brother Daryl out of the Atlantic League.
  • The Rockies signed lefty Nick Bierbrodt, the Diamondbacks' first-ever draft pick in '96.  Bierbrodt, 31, sat out the '09 season.
  • The Twins signed outfielder Charlton Jimerson out of the Atlantic League.  He put up big numbers there in '09.
  • The Mets inked second baseman Alex Cintron, who hit .285/.303/.387 in Triple A last year.

By Tim Dierkes | May 20, 2009 at 8:31am CDT

According to Pete McElroy of MASN, the Nationals designated infielder Alex Cintron for assignment.  Cintron, 30, had two hits and two walks in 28 plate appearances.  The Nats also placed Elijah Dukes on the DL, clearing the way for call-ups of Justin Maxwell and Jason Bergmann.  The Nationals are going with an eight-man bullpen.

Odds and Ends: Hearings, Anderson, Selig

By Tim Dierkes | February 2, 2009 at 2:23pm CDT

Links for Monday…

  • MLB.com’s Tom Singer looks at the effects of arbitration hearings on players.  He found that most players don’t experience a post-hearing performance decline, but they do change teams at the first opportunity.
  • MLB.com’s Lyle Spencer says the Angels and Ervin Santana are $725K apart with a hearing scheduled for later this month and "no progress" according to GM Tony Reagins.
  • The Tigers are hopeful about bridging the $950K gap with Justin Verlander.
  • Athletics Nation’s conversation with MLB.com’s Mychael Urban, Part 2.
  • Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald wouldn’t be surprised to see the White Sox trade Brian Anderson.
  • Murray Chass reflects on the Homestead camp for unsigned players heading into the 1995 season.
  • Commissioner Bud Selig earned $18.35MM in the last fiscal year, according to Eric Fisher of Sports Business Journal.
  • The latest minor league transactions from Baseball America, including the Nationals’ signing of Alex Cintron and the Rockies’ addition of Scott Munter.
  • Even with a new stadium, the Marlins will continue to prefer going year-to-year with most players.

Orioles Designate Bynum

By Steve Adams | June 22, 2008 at 1:28pm CDT

Roch Kubatko of the Baltimore Sun informs us that the Orioles have designated infielder Freddie Bynum for assignment. The move doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Bynum, 28, had posted an underwhelming line of .192/.238./.242 in 99 ABs for the O’s this season.

Baltimore has recalled RHP Ryan Bukvich in his place. Bukvich, 30, was 4-1 at AAA Norfolk with a 3.89 ERA in 34.2 IP. Oscar Salazar will take over Bynum’s role of backing up Alex Cintron at shortstop.

Orioles Sign Alex Cintron

By Tim Dierkes | March 31, 2008 at 4:33pm CDT

The Orioles inked shortstop Alex Cintron today.  That he’s probably the team’s best option at short now is damning with faint praise.

Cintron, 29, hit .243/.281/.324 for the White Sox in 185 ABs last year.  He dealt with bone spurs in his elbow, a bruised thumb, and time spent on the bereavement list for his grandfather.  Cintron had been with the Cubs this spring, but they no longer had a need for him after they decided not to trade Ronny Cedeno.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Brian Roberts

By Tim Dierkes | February 19, 2008 at 2:49pm CDT

It seems as though all the players we thought we would be traded this off-season, have been traded, minus one…Brian Roberts. The oft-rumored deal to send Roberts to the Cubs continues to linger. Ken Rosenthal first suggested that Roberts would be a good fit for the Cubs back in early December and Jeff Zrebiec confirmed the Cubs interest. Then the deal may have been dead, with the O’s asking price too high and by the end of January Gordon Wittenmyer suggested Cubs had turned their focus to Marlon Byrd. Then according to Jon Heyman a deal appeared imminent. Rosenthal thought the O’s insisting on the inclusion of Felix Pie was a deal-breaker. But then Baltimore acquired Adam Jones and Chris De Luca noted the deal might have life. But now Heyman wonders if the proposed package(s) is not enough and if Peter Angelos will nix a deal, as Roberts is one of his favorite players. Now that Spring Training has begun we have to wonder if a deal can still get done. let’s take a look at how the Roberts deal is being handled in the blogosphere.

If there is a topic you would like to see covered in "Baseball Blogs Weigh In" please let me know HERE.

  • View From the Bleachers sees Roberts as a nice addition but not a necessity as he may only be a slight upgrade from Eric Patterson. They don’t see the deal as a "foregone conclusion" considering the players being offered by the Cubs.
  • Camden Chat is not impressed with the Cubs offer, but they wonder if Roberts is worth keeping.
  • Another Cubs Blog sees the signing of Alex Cintron by the Cubs as a sign that the Cubs are making progress towards getting a deal done.
  • Ivy Chat wonders if the Cubs have enough in the system to obtain both Roberts and Joe Nathan. While they would like both, they would prefer Nathan.
  • Crawley’s Cub Kingdom notes that Alfonso Soriano’s legs are not 100% and that he may not be suited to lead off in 2008, increasing the need for Roberts.
  • A Hundred Next Years is not sure the upgrade from Mark DeRosa to Roberts is worth the price.
  • Wrigleyville23 calls it "The Roberts Rain Delay" and notes that the political process here in the U.S. actually moves faster than trade discussions between the Cubs and the O’s.
  • Orioles Fan Base talked to our own Tim Dierkes about this situation.

Cubs Sign Alex Cintron

By Tim Dierkes | February 18, 2008 at 10:53am CDT

Minor signing this morning, as the Cubs inked shortstop Alex Cintron to a minor league deal according to ESPN 1000 Radio’s Bruce Levine.  Does this have implications for Ronny Cedeno, who’s been a rumored piece in the Brian Roberts discussions?  And since Cintron had been on Baltimore’s radar, will they now focus on Juan Uribe?

Cintron, 29, hit .243/.281/.324 for the White Sox in 185 ABs last year.  He dealt with bone spurs in his elbow, a bruised thumb, and time spent on the bereavement list for his grandfather.
