Players Union Claims Evidence Of Collusion Against Bonds

By Tim Dierkes | October 16, 2008 at 9:37pm CDT

According to the AP, the Players Association claims it has evidence that teams colluded against signing Barry Bonds this year.  They’ve reached an agreement with MLB regarding the timing of their grievance.  The grievance will probably be delayed beyond Bonds’ trial, due to begin in March of 2009.  I am curious to see the nature of this evidence – comments made by execs to Jeff Borris, maybe?  The ’07 GM Meetings, where each GM took the floor and explained his offseason plans?

Odds and Ends: Iguchi, Varitek, Bonds

By Tim Dierkes | October 16, 2008 at 11:28am CDT

Linkage for Thursday…

  • Tadahito Iguchi will consider playing in the U.S. or Japan, but he wants a starting job.  He hit just .232/.292/.306 in 337 plate appearances, hobbled by a shoulder injury.
  • Yankees GM Brian Cashman said he does not have any side agreements with any of their free agents to decline arbitration if offered.  That would’ve been nice for Ivan Rodriguez.  River Ave. Blues thinks the Yanks should offer arb to Rodriguez, Bobby Abreu, Mike Mussina, and Damaso Marte.
  • Sox Machine would like to see the White Sox add a defensive player like Mark Ellis.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post wonders if Larry Bowa would campaign for the Yankees to sign Manny Ramirez, if Bowa joins the Yankees first.
  • Tonight could be Jason Varitek’s last game as a member of the Red Sox.
  • What might’ve been: the Rockies seriously considered drafting Evan Longoria.
  • Murray Chass talked to Barry Bonds’ agent, Jeff Borris.

Odds and Ends: Bonds, Crow, Odalis Perez

By Tim Dierkes | October 7, 2008 at 1:29pm CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Barry Bonds is enjoying his freedom.
  • MLB.com has a list of all the potential free agents. The Dodgers lead with 14, while the Royals and Giants have only two.
  • Brewers GM Doug Melvin may get an extension soon.
  • Rich Harden will have a shoulder exam soon, which will inform the Cubs’ decision on his $7MM option.
  • MLB.com’s Matthew Leach sees the Cardinals letting starter Braden Looper leave, but attempting to re-sign infielder Felipe Lopez.
  • The Kansas City Star’s Bill Reiter catches up with Aaron Crow, who is basically just chillin’ right now.  MLB.com’s Dick Kaegel says the Royals like Crow, but he may not be around when they draft 12th in 2009.
  • Ken Rosenthal agrees that the Rays owe their success to much more than just top draft picks.
  • Pete McElroy notes that Odalis Perez would love to re-sign with the Nationals.  Perez pitched 159.2 respectable innings but earned less than a million bucks.
  • Eddie Bajek has his final Elias rankings for NL relievers.  Type As: Ryan Dempster, Russ Springer, Juan Cruz, Doug Brocail, Brian Fuentes, Kerry Wood, and Jason Isringhausen.  Type Bs: Joe Beimel, Jeremy Affeldt, Brian Shouse, Bob Howry, David Weathers, Trevor Hoffman, Eric Gagne, and Brandon Lyon.  If one of these players is offered arbitration, turns it down, and signs elsewhere, his old team gets one or two draft picks.
  • MLB.com’s Spencer Fordin doesn’t see the need for the Orioles to sign Jeremy Guthrie to a long-term deal this winter.

Cafardo’s Latest: Ausmus, Towles, Mariners, Giants, Sheffield, Salty

By Cork Gaines | August 17, 2008 at 9:33am CDT

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has a few items in his Sunday column…

  • Cafardo says that the Red Sox, despite being in the market for a catcher, are not interested in Brad Ausmus.  They did inquire with the Astros about J.R. Towles, who is currently in Triple A, but were told he is unavailable.
  • One executive told Cafardo that the Mariners continue to demand other teams take entire contracts and give up prospects for players like Raul Ibanez, Jarrod Washburn and Adrian Beltre.  In the cases of Ibanez and Beltre, that position is defensible.
  • Cafardo interviewed Brian Sabean about several topics: 1) When asked about trading veteran players, Sabean responded "There’s still time"; 2) When asked whether the Giants would "go young"  or target free agents in the offseason, Sabean was noncommital but said they will look for free agents and trade pieces to fix problems, specifically mentioning the bullpen and first base; 3) When asked if he was tempted to sign Barry Bonds, Sabean would not answer.
  • Cafardo was just musing on a few players, but feels that Gary Sheffield could help the Rays, but only if the Tigers pay some of the salary. He also thinks Jarrod Saltalamacchia would be a nice fit in Boston next season.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com and can be reached here .

Rays Not Interested In Bonds

By Tim Dierkes | August 15, 2008 at 9:14pm CDT

Just to hammer the point home, Barry Bonds’ agent Jeff Borris told Ken Rosenthal today that Rays GM Andrew Friedman failed to respond to his text message.  The Rays would like to add a hitter, but they’ve never had serious interest in Bonds.  Borris believes his client has been "blackballed" by MLB.

Rosenthal says the Rays would only consider Gary Sheffield if the Tigers picked up the majority of his contract, understandably.  They’re not interested in Kenny Lofton or Jose Vidro.

Heyman’s Latest: Washburn, Cashman, Garcia, Lofton

By Tim Dierkes | August 13, 2008 at 1:33pm CDT

SI.com’s Jon Heyman checks in with a new column.

  • Jarrod Washburn reportedly cleared waivers, though Heyman’s use of the word "reportedly" makes me think the statement came from one of the shaky reports floating about.  We’ll wait for definitive word on that one.
  • Heyman’s sources say the Yankees plan to offer a new contract to GM Brian Cashman after the season.  Hank Steinbrenner has apparently warmed to Cashman.  Additionally, "club higherups" expect Cashman will want to stay rather than jump to the Seattle job.
  • Heyman loves the Freddy Garcia acquisition; he wonders if Garcia will be motivated by Ozzie Guillen’s comments.  The White Sox weren’t interested; Guillen doesn’t think Garcia will be ready for the playoffs.  There’s a chance Garcia could return to the Tigers in ’09.
  • Heyman says it was a 2-2 vote whether to keep Manny Ramirez in Boston – Theo Epstein and Tom Werner advocating a trade, and Larry Lucchino and John Henry preferring to keep him.  Henry changed his mind and the deal was made.  Lucchino recently denied Heyman’s speculation that he might leave after the season.
  • The Rays made an offer to Kenny Lofton in spring and even gave Barry Bonds consideration.  But now a signing of either is "highly unlikely."  Giants GM Brian Sabean thinks the Rays should sign Bonds.
  • Heyman continues to speculate that Jim Bowden could be fired.
  • One GM expects the Padres to pick up Brian Giles’ $9MM option for ’09.  It’s an easy decision since it has a $3MM buyout.  However, Peter Gammons says it will be declined.

Odds and Ends: Ibanez, Dunn, Blake, Stewart

By Tim Dierkes | August 12, 2008 at 9:53am CDT

Let’s kick off the morning with some random links.

  • Live chat here today at 2pm CST.
  • Brian Matusz is hopeful about striking a deal with the Orioles by Friday’s deadline.  Roch Kubatko has a source saying it’s likely.
  • Baseball America’s Jim Callis warns us not to listen to the posturing – he still expects all the first-round draft picks to sign with the possible exception of Allan Dykstra.
  • Should the Mariners offer Raul Ibanez a three-year deal at $10-11MM per?
  • No word yet on possible Rays acquisitions in wake of the Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria injuries.  Marc Lancaster wonders if Kenny Lofton or…don’t say it…Barry Bonds would make sense.
  • The Mets had no interest in Adam Dunn.  They wonder about his passion, according to Joel Sherman.  Did you know he doesn’t like baseball?
  • The Phillies were more interested in Casey Blake than Manny Ramirez.
  • Athletics Nation looks at some free agent options for ’09.
  • Shannon Stewart didn’t understand his latest Blue Jay Experience.
  • The Yankees, Mets, Angels, and Padres have scouts at the Olympics to watch Hitoki Iwase, Koji Uehara, Kenshin Kawakami, Yu Darvish, and Kyuji Fujikawa.

Odds and Ends: Kielty, Ellis, Bonds, Poreda

By Tim Dierkes | August 11, 2008 at 11:40am CDT

Time to for today’s link collection.

  • The Twins signed Bobby Kielty to a minor league deal.  The former Twin was released by the Red Sox in July.  When he’s going good, he can hit lefties pretty well.
  • Peter Magowan is glad the Giants didn’t successfully pull off an attempted trade for Manny Ramirez before the ’07 season.  However, as Henry Schulman notes, that might’ve prevented the Barry Zito contract.
  • The Reds haven’t talked to the agents for any of their potential free agents, and no decision has been made on Adam Dunn.
  • Susan Slusser wonders if the D’Backs will try to acquire second baseman Mark Ellis in the wake of Orlando Hudson’s season-ending injury, though manager Bob Melvin does not expect an acquisition.
  • It’s a moot point since they’re not interested, but Astros manager Cecil Cooper would quit if the team signed Barry Bonds.
  • Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune notes that the Rockies asked for ’07 first-rounder Aaron Poreda for Brian Fuentes.  Instead, Rogers believes he could get a big-league look.
  • Ken Davidoff talks to agent Joe Bick about how Brian Giles went about choosing the teams on his no-trade list.
  • The Rangers made their first Korean amateur signing, inking a high school righty named Tae-kyeong Ahn.  They also signed Dominican outfielder Esdras Abreu, among others.

Wade Says Bonds Not An Option

By Steve Adams | August 10, 2008 at 3:34pm CDT

Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle writes that Astros general manager Ed Wade is not interested in signing Barry Bonds as a replacement for the injured Carlos Lee. Manager Cecil Cooper echoed the statement. Lance Berkman, however, would like to have Bonds as a teammate:

"That would certainly sell tickets.  I’d love to have him on the team. I think he would be great if he could perform at a level we’re accustomed to seeing. If he’ll play for the minimum (league salary), I would certainly take a flier on that."

Wade has not ruled out acquiring another outfielder, though he doesn’t feel that it is an absolutely necessary move.  For his part, Bonds insists he’s not retired.

Making a move for an outfielder doesn’t seem entirely logical, with Houston being eight games out of the wild card race in the National League, but we’ve seen them be surprisingly aggressive in July, making acquisitions of both Randy Wolf and LaTroy Hawkins.

Odds And Ends: Guerrero, Sheffield, Wells, Lincecum

By Joe Pawlikowski | August 10, 2008 at 10:04am CDT

Here are a few tidbits from around the ’Net this morning.

  • Vlad Guerrero wants to spend the rest of his days with the Angels. The question is, will the Halos pony up for a deal for the slugger’s latter years? They hold a $15 million club option ($3 million buyout) for next year, Vlad’s age-33 season. Will they work out an extension this off-season, or will they let Future Vlad and Future Reagins figure it out after ’09?
  • Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe mentions a player who wouldn’t mind being traded: Gary Sheffield. The 39-year-old hasn’t enjoyed his time at DH, saying that he needs to play the field to be a vocal leader. A few obstacles stand in the way, including his limited no-trade clause, his chronically ailing shoulder, and the $19 million owed to him over the next two years. He’d easily clear waivers, though, and might have already. Tampa Bay, anyone?
  • The Rockies have DFA’d Kip Wells to make room for Livan Hernandez. Wells had a 5.27 ERA over 27.1 innings for the Rockies.
  • Looks like Tim Lincecum is content going with year to year contracts, according to his agent. The Giants have a monopoly on his services through the 2013 season.
  • With Carlos Lee likely out for the season, Richard Justice urges the Astros to sign Barry Bonds.
  • With the August 15th draftee signing deadling approaching, the Pirates have a major league deal on the table for first round pick Pedro Alvarez.
