White Sox Sign Danny Farquhar

The White Sox have signed veteran righty Danny Farquhar, Scott Merkin of MLB.com tweets. Triple-A Charlotte has confirmed the move, while also announcing the releases of catcher Carson Blair and righty Bobby Parnell.

Chicago has been looking to add veteran arms to the ranks at Charlotte as it continues to oversee a rummage sale with its MLB roster. Several relievers have already been dealt and a few more appear to be on the block as well.

The 30-year-old Farquhar continues to generate tons of swings and misses (better than 14% this year), but has had trouble translating that into consistent results. He was able to punch out only 8.5 batters per nine via strikeout despite the outstanding whiff rate, and also permitted a 5.7 BB/9 walk rate in his 35 innings this year with the Rays.

Those struggles led to the loss of Farquhar’s MLB roster spot and, not long after, his release. But he obviously still has some intriguing skills and has at times been quite effective over long stretches. Farquhar will hope for another shot at the majors down the stretch, with designs on setting himself up for a solid opportunity entering the 2018 season.

As for the other two players, the 27-year-old Blair has seen eleven games of MLB action, but has mostly played in the upper minors in recent years. He’s slashing .211/.297/.390 on the season at Triple-A. Parnell, the former Mets’ closer, has struggled to a 7.34 ERA in his 34 1/3 innings at the highest level of the minors this year (split between the Royals and White Sox organizations).

White Sox, Bobby Parnell Agree To Minors Deal

The White Sox have agreed to a minor league pact with veteran right-hander Bobby Parnell, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Parnell, who is represented by ACES, opted out of a minor league deal with the Royals last week.

The 32-year-old Parnell has yet to reestablish himself as a quality big league reliever after undergoing Tommy John surgery back in 2014. Since Opening Day 2014, he’s logged a collective 30 1/3 innings in the Majors with a 6.53 ERA and more walks (23) than strikeouts (18). He did still manage a ground-ball rate north of 50 percent in limited action across each of the past two seasons, and Parnell’s fastball velocity remained a healthy 94.9 mph, on average, in his brief stint with the Tigers last season. That, however, is down quite a bit from the 97 mph he averaged at his peak with the Mets from 2010-13.

Chicago will hope that Parnell can get back to that 2010-13 form, during which he posted a 2.79 ERA with 8.5 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 across 213 innings. Chicago’s bullpen has been among the best in baseball, though the team is also widely expected to trade away some of its veteran contributors, including closer David Robertson. Adding Parnell could give them an experienced depth option to turn to following some of those moves, though his 2017 performance to date hasn’t exactly been encouraging. Through 21 innings with the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate in Omaha, he’s been tagged for a 4.71 ERA with 17 strikeouts, 13 walks and a 42.2 percent ground-ball rate.

NL East Links: Kemp, Cespedes, Mets, Glover, Baker, Phillies

Matt Kemp has been such a boost to the Braves lineup that Mark Bradley of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution doesn’t see the team shopping Kemp as a deadline trade chip.  Kemp is 32, is a limited defensive outfielder and has a hefty remaining salary owed through the 2019 season, yet Bradley feels the veteran has made himself a near-indispensable part of the roster.  Kemp has been outstanding since joining the Braves last season, including a .345/.381/.608 slash line and 10 homers in 181 PA this year.  Bradley also notes that Freddie Freeman’s production improved with Kemp hitting behind him, which gives Kemp even more value.

Some notes from around the NL East…

  • Mets GM Sandy Alderson said there wasn’t any new updates on Yoenis Cespedes’ DL situation, which leads the New York Post’s Adam Rubin to doubt whether Cespedes will be able to return to action this week.  Cespedes’ rehab stint for a hamstring injury was interrupted by some soreness in his long bothersome right quad muscle, and he has yet to resume full running, though he has been jogging.  Alderson had previously said that Cespedes could potentially return for DH duty when the Mets are in Texas for an interleague series with the Rangers this week, though that timeline seems tenuous at this point.
  • Also from Rubin, he reports that the Mets “aren’t likely” to go after relievers Bobby Parnell and Ernesto Frieri.  The two right-handers recently opted out of minor league deals (Parnell with the Royals, Frieri with the Yankees) and are now free agents.  Parnell, of course, has a notable history with the Mets, pitching for the club from 2008-15 and serving as the team’s closer in 2013.
  • Though rookie Koda Glover has looked excellent as the Nationals’ closer, Thomas Boswell of the Washington Post argues that the Nats should still pursue an experienced ninth-inning man before the trade deadline.  Glover is still an unproven commodity with some durability questions and the Nationals’ bullpen is lacking in overall depth, plus Glover could still excel as a setup man down the stretch.
  • The Nationals’ pen is also one of many topics covered in a reader mailbag piece from Jorge Castillo and Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post, with Castillo feeling that the Nats will indeed obtain a reliever at the deadline.  It may not necessarily be a big-name closer, however, given how Glover continues to perform over the next two months.
  • From that same mailbag item, Janes writes that there don’t appear to be any extension talks between Dusty Baker and the Nationals, though that could be a function of ownership’s stance against making lengthy commitments to managers.  It seems that both sides want to continue the relationship and all signs point towards Baker returning in 2018 (assuming the Nats continue to win, of course), though Janes notes that the team will have to pay market price for Baker given the success the Nationals have enjoyed in his tenure.
  • Despite the Phillies’ struggles, GM Matt Klentak reiterated to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki and other media that the team hasn’t altered its approach to promoting its top minor league position players.  The likes of J.P. Crawford, Roman Quinn, Rhys Hoskins and others at Triple-A could provide the Phils with a boost or at least give the youngsters some experience at the big league level as part of the team’s overall rebuilding process.  The Phillies aren’t going to promote their prospects, however, until there is a clear opportunity for regular playing time and until each player is fully prepared for the majors.  “To expose players to the big league level before they’re ready isn’t doing them any favors, nor is it doing the organization any favors. We have to constantly balance that,” Klentak said.

Bobby Parnell Opts Out Of Royals Contract

Right-hander Bobby Parnell has exercised an out clause in his minor league deal with the Royals and is now a free agent, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter).

Parnell, 32, has totaled 21 innings with the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate in Omaha, pitching to a 4.71 ERA with 17 strikeouts against 13 walks with a 42.2 percent ground-ball rate. Opponents actually aren’t hitting Parnell all that hard (.244/.354/.305, no homers allowed), but his control issues and a poor 61.8 percent strand rate have haunted him thus far.

The former Mets closer tallied just 30 1/3 innings in the Majors over the past three seasons combined due to myriad injuries, including 2014 Tommy John surgery. Prior to that TJ operation, Parnell had risen from middle reliever to setup man to closer in Queens, pitching to a 2.79 ERA with 8.5 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 across 213 innings from 2010-13. He’s yet to be able to approach that form in any of his comeback attempts, however, and Parnell’s once-97 mph heater was averaging a diminished (but still solid) 94 mph in his brief big league stint with the Tigers last year.

Royals Sign Bobby Parnell, Three Others

The Royals have signed righty reliever Bobby Parnell to what is presumably a minor league deal, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America. Parnell is an ACES client.

The 32-year-old Parnell once served as a prominent reliever and then a closer for the Mets, but he has struggled to get his career back on track after having Tommy John surgery early in the 2014 season. He signed a minor league deal with the Tigers prior to the 2016 season and posted middling numbers in Triple-A. He did make it to the Majors, only to struggle in six outings before being released. His fastball velocity, however, did increase to an average of 94 MPH, one mile per hour higher than in 2015 with the Mets and a bit closer to the high-90s velocity he had in his prime.

Also among the Royals signings (again, presumably of the minor league variety) not already previously noted in this space are lefty Jonathan Sanchez, infielder Brooks Conrad and outfielder Ruben Sosa. The 34-year-old Sanchez did not pitch competitively in 2016 after being released by the Reds in Spring Training. He was a longtime cog in the Giants’ rotation and 786 1/3 big-league innings, a no-hitter, and a 2010 championship ring to his name. He has not appeared in the big leagues since struggling in five outings with the Pirates in 2013, however, and he’s frequently struggled with control issues, with a 5.0 career BB/9. He briefly played for the Royals in 2012.

Conrad, 36, played for the independent Sugar Land Skeeters in 2016 and hit sparingly. His last significant minor league action came in 2015 with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas, where he batted a modest .194/.280/.319. In parts of six seasons in the big leagues, he’s hit .200/.271/.389 in about one full season’s worth of at-bats while playing mostly second and third.

The 5-foot-7, 26-year-old Sosa spent several years in the Astros and Angels systems and never established himself as a top prospect, but he likely caught the Royals’ attention with a strong showing in the Mexican League in 2016. In 314 plate appearances with Laguna, he batted .371/.458/.517 with 22 stolen bases, impressive numbers even in a hitter-friendly context.

Tigers Release Bobby Parnell

AUG. 23: The Tigers announced today that Parnell has cleared waivers and been released.

AUG. 18: The Tigers announced that they have designated right-hander Bobby Parnell for assignment and selected the contract of veteran outfielder Alex Presley from Triple-A Toledo. Parnell’s DFA creates a spot on the 40-man roster for Presley, and he’ll be added to the big league roster at the expense of outfielder Steven Moya, who has been optioned back to Toledo, per the club.

Parnell, 31, has tossed 5 1/3 innings for the Tigers at the big league level this season after inking a minor league deal in Spring Training. He’s allowed four earned runs (6.75 ERA) on seven hits and five walks (one intentional) in that time, with the rest of his work coming at the Triple-A level, where he’d been pitching prior to his DFA. Parnell’s work in the minors has been more respectable but still nowhere near the excellence he showed with the Mets from 2010-13, when he totaled a 2.79 ERA at the big league level and emerged as New York’s closer. In 43 1/3 innings with Toledo this season, he has a 3.98 ERA with 6.2 K/9 against 3.7 BB/9.

The 31-year-old Presley opened the year with the Brewers and logged 129 plate appearances, adding to his already considerable big league experience. The left-handed hitter owns a lifetime .253/.296/.383 slash at the Major League level was hitting .293/.378/.398 with Toledo at the time of his promotion. Presley can handle all three outfield spots, so he’ll give skipper Brad Ausmus another option in center field with Cameron Maybin on the shelf. Moya, meanwhile, will head back to the minors to continue to work on his plate discipline. The 25-year-old demonstrated his above-average power by clubbing five homers in just 95 Major League plate appearances, but he also punched out an alarming 34 times against just five walks in that span.

Tigers Select Contract Of Bobby Parnell, Designate Jose Valdez

The Tigers announced today that they’ve selected the contract of right-hander Bobby Parnell from Triple-A Toledo and designated fellow righty Jose Valdez for assignment in order to clear a spot  on the 40-man roster (links to Twitter). Australian right-hander Warwick Saupold was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a groin injury, necessitating the addition of Parnell to the big league bullpen.

Parnell, 31, signed a minor league deal with Detroit and headed to Toledo after he didn’t make the team out of Spring Training. The former Mets closer has pitched to a 3.98 ERA in 20 1/3 innings with the Mud Hens this season, though he’s also posted a fairly uninspiring 16-to-11 K/BB ratio in that time. Parnell is looking to reestablish himself as a quality Major League reliever after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2014 and missing much of the 2015 season while recovering from that injury and, later in the year, some tendinitis in his right shoulder. All in all, he posted a 6.38 ERA in 24 innings last season.

Injury problems for Parnell date back further than just the 2014-15 campaigns, however. In 2013, Parnell was in the midst of a dominant season as the Mets’ closer before a herniated disk in his neck left him unable to pitch after July 30. On a more positive note, he did work to a 2.16 ERA in 50 innings that season, and he was generally impressive from 2010-13, generating a 2.79 ERA with 8.5 K/9 against 2.8 BB/9 in 213 innings of work. Parnell’s average fastball velocity is understandably down from its 97.2 mph peak (2011), but he still averaged 93 mph on his heater last season.

As for Valdez, the 26-year-old made his big league debut in 2015 when he allowed four runs on 10 hits and four walks with four strikeouts in nine innings out of the Detroit bullpen. He’s battled his control between Double-A and Triple-A this season, though, walking 12 batters, hitting one and uncorking three wild pitches in 20 innings of relief en route to a combined 4.50 ERA. It’s worth noting that Baseball America rated him 23rd among Detroit farmhands entering the season, although BA questioned his control and noted that he’s frequently behind in the count due to an inability to consistently command either his fastball or his slider.

Tigers Re-Sign Bobby Parnell

The Tigers have announced the re-signing of reliever Bobby Parnell to a minor league deal, as Lynn Henning of the Detroit News was first to report on Twitter. Third baseman Casey McGehee — who, like Parnell, was released on Monday — is reportedly also likely to re-join the organization.

By releasing and re-signing Parnell, 31, the Tigers avoided the need to pay him a $100K retention bonus. Though the results on the field this spring weren’t pretty, Parnell was said to be ramping up his velocity as camp progressed.

The former closer made it back from Tommy John surgery last year, only to strike out 13 and walk 17 in his 24 innings. Of course, he has shown plenty more previously. Over the 2010 to 2013 time span, he ran up a 2.79 ERA with 8.5 K/9 against 3.0 BB/9.

Tigers Release Bobby Parnell, Casey McGehee

The Tigers have released right-hander Bobby Parnell and infielder Casey McGehee, the club announced.  Both players were in Detroit’s camp on minor league contracts.  As Article XX(B) players, Parnell and McGehee would’ve each been owed $100K bonuses if the Tigers wanted to keep them in the minors rather than put them on the Opening Day roster.

Parnell missed virtually all of 2014 and a good chunk of 2015 recovering from Tommy John surgery, as he pitched just 24 innings out of the Mets bullpen last season.  The former closer was looking for a new opportunity in Detroit, and while he hadn’t pitched well this spring, it’s a bit surprising to see the Tigers cut ties with Parnell given all the question marks (both performance-wise and injury-wise) in their bullpen.  It could be that Detroit tries to re-sign Parnell to a new minor league deal once the Article XX(B) deadline passes.

Prior to his Tommy John surgery, Parnell put up strong numbers with New York, posting a 2.79 ERA, 8.5 K/9 and 3.01 K/BB rate over 213 innings from 2010-13, including a stint as the Mets’ closer in 2013.

McGehee signed with Detroit last month looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2015 season that saw him hit .198/.264/.274 with two homers over 258 plate appearances with the Giants and Marlins.  The 33-year-old has a career .259/.319/.389 slash line over 2990 PA since 2008, and he also spent the 2013 season in Japan with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles.

The Tigers and former Mets closer Bobby Parnell have agreed to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training, reports Lynn Henning of the Detroit News (via Twitter). Parnell, a client of ACES, will compete for a spot in the bullpen alongside locks such as Francisco Rodriguez, Mark Lowe, Justin Wilson, Alex Wilson and presumably Blaine Hardy.

Parnell, 31, enjoyed an excellent run at the back of the Mets’ bullpen from 2010-13, registering a 2.79 ERA with 8.5 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and a 55.4 percent ground-ball rate in 213 innings of work. Parnell ultimately landed in the closer’s role for New York, saving 22 games once he took over the job in 2013 — a season in which he recorded a career-best 2.16 ERA. However, that campaign was cut short by a herniated disk in Parnell’s neck, and the following season was wiped out entirely (aside from one lone inning) due to Tommy John surgery. Parnell returned to the Mets in 2015, but his velocity (93 mph average fastball) was down significantly from its peak of 97.2 mph in 2011, and his control was nowhere to be found. Parnell walked more batters (17) than he struck out (13) in 24 innings last year, en route to an unsightly and uncharacteristic 6.38 ERA. He landed on the disabled list with what was termed right shoulder tendinitis in mid-August and didn’t pitch again for the remainder of the season.
