Casey McGehee To Sign With Japan’s Yomiuri Giants

Free agent corner infielder Casey McGehee has agreed to a one-year contract with the Yomiuri Giants in Nippon Professional Baseball, reports FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal (Twitter link). The deal guarantees the Meister Sports Management client $2MM for 2017 and includes another $1MM in incentives, tweets FanRag’s Jon Heyman. It also features a club option for 2018.

This will be the second stint in Japan for McGehee, who spent the 2013 campaign with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. Between cracking the major leagues in 2008 and joining Tohoku, McGehee combined to hit .257/.314/.414 in 2,041 plate appearances with the Cubs, Brewers, Pirates and Yankees. His best full season came in 2010 as a member of the Brewers, with whom he slashed .285/.337/.464 and tallied a career-high 23 home runs in 670 PAs.

McGehee returned from Japan in 2014 to sign with the Marlins, and he ended up earning National League Comeback Player of the Year honors after posting a respectable .287/.355/.357 line in 691 trips to the plate. His numbers cratered over the past two seasons with the Marlins, Giants and Tigers, though, and McGehee spent the majority of 2016 with Detroit’s Triple-A affiliate in Toledo. Now, as a result of his recent struggles in the majors, the 34-year-old will head back to Japan.

Minor MLB Transactions: 6/22/16

Here are the day’s minor moves:

  • Third baseman Casey McGehee has been optioned to Triple-A by the Tigers after clearing waivers, the club announced. He accepted the assignment after being designated recently, with the club electing not to remove him from the 40-man roster. After a single plate appearance during a brief pit stop in Detroit, the 33-year-old will remain available should another need arise at the major league level. McGehee is off to a strong start at Triple-A, with a .323/.370/.440 batting line through 270 plate appearances.
  • The Twins have released lefty Dan Runzler, per an announcement from the club’s Triple-A affiliate. Now 31, Runzler showed promise early in his career with the Giants but could never sustain enough control to stick at the major league level. Between 2009 and 2012, he put up 72 1/3 innings of 3.86 ERA pitching from the pen, with 9.7 K/9 against 5.5 BB/9. Runzler was carrying an 18:16 K/BB ratio in his 21 2/3 Triple-A frames at Rochester, with 14 earned runs charged to his ledger.

Tigers Designate Casey McGehee For Assignment

The Tigers announced today that they’ve selected the contract of right-hander Dustin Molleken from Triple-A Toldeo and designated veteran infielder Casey McGehee for assignment in order to clear a spot on the active roster. Additionally, Detroit announced that it has transferred right-hander Drew VerHagen from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list as he deals with thoracic outlet syndrome in his right shoulder.

McGehee, 33, appeared in just one game with the Tigers and logged one plate appearance upon having his contract selected over the weekend. Prior to his promotion from the minors, he’d been enjoying a nice season with Toledo, hitting .323/.370/.440 with 17 doubles and four homers in 270 plate appearances.

In 2009-10, McGehee looked to have cemented himself as a fixture in the Brewers’ lineup, but his production fell off substantially in 2011-12. After forgettable tenures with the Pirates and Yankees in 2012, he took to Japan and revived his career with a brilliant 2013 season, during which he batted .292/.376/.515 with 28 homers. That performance earned McGehee another crack at the Majors, and he capitalized with the Marlins in 2014, batting .287/.355/.357 while serving as Miami’s primary third baseman. That success, however, was followed by renewed struggles in 2015 between the Giants (who acquired him in an offseason trade) and a second stint with the Fish. After a combined .198/.264/.274 showing between the two teams, McGehee took a minor league pact this winter.

It’ll be interesting to see if McGehee’s strong minor league production this year earns him a look elsewhere. Even if the veteran is unclaimed on waivers, he has enough service time to refuse an outright assignment and seek a new opportunity with a club that offers perhaps a clearer path to a big league role. Speculatively speaking, the Mets could use some depth at the infield corners, and the Royals, too, have seen their starting third baseman go down with a season-ending injury.

As for Molleken, the promotion to the Majors represents the culmination of 13 seasons worth of perseverance. The Canadian-born righty was a 15th-round pick of the Pirates all the way back in 2003 but has yet to throw a pitch in the Major Leagues. The Tigers are his fifth MLB organization, and he’s also spent parts of two seasons in Japan pitching for the Nippon Ham Fighters as he’s continued to pursue the big leagues. Molleken has a 4.32 ERA with 8.8 K/9 against 4.3 BB/9 in parts of six Triple-A seasons and has posted some of the best ERAs of his career across the past two seasons, during which time he’s logged a mark of 3.46.

Tigers Designate Wynton Bernard, Promote Casey McGehee

The Tigers have announced that they’ve designated outfielder Wynton Bernard. The move clears 40-man space for veteran infielder Casey McGehee, whose contract the Tigers selected from Triple-A Toledo. Since they optioned righty Buck Farmer to Toledo yesterday, they had a spot open on their active roster.

The Tigers added Bernard to their 40-man roster after a strong 2014 season with Class A West Michigan, and he held his own last season at Double-A Erie. He has, however, struggled this year in a season split between Erie and Toledo, batting just .229/.294/.323. He does have good speed, with 113 steals in parts of five minor-league seasons. He has never played in the big leagues.

After struggling for the Giants and Marlins last season, the 33-year-old McGehee has fared well with Toledo in 2016, batting .323/.370/.440 in 270 plate appearances. He should provide the Tigers with a right-handed bat off the bench.

As we near the end of Spring Training, it’s a big day — if you can call it that — for minor moves. Here’s the latest from around the league.

  • The Royals have released outfielder Travis Snider, Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star tweets. They had signed Snider to a minor-league deal after he hit .232/.313/.350 with the Orioles and Pirates last year. He had been looking to compete for a bench job.
  • The Royals have also re-signed righty sidearmer Peter Moylan to a minor-league deal, Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star tweets. The 37-year-old came back to pitch for the Braves last season after having Tommy John surgery, and the Royals signed him to a minor-league deal only to release him earlier this week to avoid paying him a retention bonus.
  • Third baseman Will Middlebrooks could have refused to let the Brewers send him to the minors, but he’s accepted an assignment to Triple-A Colorado Springs, Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel tweets. Middlebrooks hit .212/.241/.361 in 255 plate appearances last season for San Diego and did not win a job with the Brewers out of Spring Training.
  • The Marlins have re-signed utilityman Don Kelly to a minor-league deal, MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro tweets. The Marlins had released Kelly yesterday, likely to avoid paying him a $100K retention bonus as an Article XX(B) free agent. The longtime Tigers bench piece played sparingly in the Marlins organization in 2015.
  • The Marlins also released first baseman Tommy Medica today, Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith tweets. Medica played in 102 games with the Padres in 2014, but did not play in the big leagues last year, instead batting .259/.314/.364 in 363 plate appearances for San Diego’s Triple-A affiliate in El Paso.
  • The Tigers have re-signed veteran infielder Casey McGehee to a minor-league deal, tweets MLB.com’s Jason Beck. They had released him this week. As with Kelly and Moylan, McGehee would have been owed a retention bonus. McGehee struggled with San Francisco and Miami in 2015, batting .198/.264/.274 in 258 plate appearances.
  • White Sox righty Kameron Loe has received an 80-game suspension for PEDs, Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram notes (Twitter links). Officially, Loe tested positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone metabolite and methasterone. He says on his Twitter account that he was caught taking an unapproved product he bought at a nutrition store. Loe was also suspended 50 games last year, although that was for a “drug of abuse,” not for PED use. He pitched in the independent Atlantic League in 2015 before signing a minor-league deal with Chicago.
  • The Rays have released first-baseman-turned-knuckleballer Dan Johnson, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets. The 36-year-old Johnson, who briefly played for the Cardinals last year, had been trying for a sort of second career as a pitcher after years spent as a slugger on the fringes of the big leagues.

Tigers Re-Sign Bobby Parnell

The Tigers have announced the re-signing of reliever Bobby Parnell to a minor league deal, as Lynn Henning of the Detroit News was first to report on Twitter. Third baseman Casey McGehee — who, like Parnell, was released on Monday — is reportedly also likely to re-join the organization.

By releasing and re-signing Parnell, 31, the Tigers avoided the need to pay him a $100K retention bonus. Though the results on the field this spring weren’t pretty, Parnell was said to be ramping up his velocity as camp progressed.

The former closer made it back from Tommy John surgery last year, only to strike out 13 and walk 17 in his 24 innings. Of course, he has shown plenty more previously. Over the 2010 to 2013 time span, he ran up a 2.79 ERA with 8.5 K/9 against 3.0 BB/9.

Tigers Release Bobby Parnell, Casey McGehee

The Tigers have released right-hander Bobby Parnell and infielder Casey McGehee, the club announced.  Both players were in Detroit’s camp on minor league contracts.  As Article XX(B) players, Parnell and McGehee would’ve each been owed $100K bonuses if the Tigers wanted to keep them in the minors rather than put them on the Opening Day roster.

Parnell missed virtually all of 2014 and a good chunk of 2015 recovering from Tommy John surgery, as he pitched just 24 innings out of the Mets bullpen last season.  The former closer was looking for a new opportunity in Detroit, and while he hadn’t pitched well this spring, it’s a bit surprising to see the Tigers cut ties with Parnell given all the question marks (both performance-wise and injury-wise) in their bullpen.  It could be that Detroit tries to re-sign Parnell to a new minor league deal once the Article XX(B) deadline passes.

Prior to his Tommy John surgery, Parnell put up strong numbers with New York, posting a 2.79 ERA, 8.5 K/9 and 3.01 K/BB rate over 213 innings from 2010-13, including a stint as the Mets’ closer in 2013.

McGehee signed with Detroit last month looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2015 season that saw him hit .198/.264/.274 with two homers over 258 plate appearances with the Giants and Marlins.  The 33-year-old has a career .259/.319/.389 slash line over 2990 PA since 2008, and he also spent the 2013 season in Japan with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles.

Tigers To Sign Casey McGehee

The Tigers have agreed to a minor league contract with third baseman Casey McGehee, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports (Twitter link).  The 33-year-old McGehee is represented by Meister Sports Management.

There were rumblings earlier in the week about Detroit possibly signing another veteran infielder, and in McGehee, the Tigers have added depth at third base.  The hot corner is arguably the team’s least-settled position given how former top prospect Nick Castellanos has delivered sub-replacement numbers both offensively and (especially) defensively over two full seasons in the bigs.  Offseason acquisition Mike Aviles has the inside track on the utility infield job due to his ability to play all around the diamond, while Andrew Romine and Tommy Field are also in the mix for playing time.

McGehee won NL Comeback Player Of The Year honors in 2014 following a solid season with the Marlins, though that performance was somewhat checkered by a poor second half and an overall .335 BABIP.  He was dealt to San Francisco last winter and was the Giants’ de facto replacement for Pablo Sandoval at third but McGehee struggled badly and eventually lost his job to Matt Duffy.  He ended up re-signing with the Marlins after being designated for assignment in June, and overall, McGehee hit .198/.264/.274 with two homers over 258 plate appearances last season.

New York Notes: Teixeira, Harvey, Bullpens

The Yankees and Mets are both firmly in the playoff picture, with the Yanks currently occupying a Wild Card spot and the Mets holding a six-game lead over the Nationals in the NL East. Here’s the latest on each club…

  • Though the Yankees had to put Mark Teixeira on the DL and will be without him for a week, the team isn’t planning to pursue any outside help at first base, GM Brian Cashman tells Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Astros slugger Chris Carter and the Marlins’ Casey McGehee have cleared waivers, Sherman reports, and while neither wouldn’t be eligible for the postseason roster if acquired, either could pair with Greg Bird at first base in Teixeira’s absence. However, Cashman doesn’t think the Yankees can find a definitive improvement over their internal options, suggesting that he doesn’t think too highly of either right-handed corner option mentioned by Sherman.
  • Agent Scott Boras feels that the Mets are putting Matt Harvey in danger by not strictly adhering to Dr. James Andrews’ recommended limit of 180 innings. “Any club that chooses to defy a surgeon’s wishes is putting the player in peril,” Boras tells CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman. GM Sandy Alderson contends that he’s consulted with doctors all year and considered any innings limit placed on Harvey to be “soft” in nature. Boras disagrees: “Expert opinion by medical practitioners is not a soft number. There are no soft numbers. These are medical practitioners providing opinions about when a pitcher is at risk, and when a pitcher isn’t at risk.” The Mets plan to skip one of Harvey’s starts in advance of the playoffs, but the righty has still totaled 166 1/3 innings this season, so he’s on pace to pitch far more than 180, especially if the Mets make a deep postseason run. In that scenario, Alderson said that Harvey would be monitored on a “case by case” basis.
  • Bullpen workload is a challenge for both Joe Girardi and Terry Collins down the stretch, writes the Post’s Ken Davidoff. Each skipper has a pair of late-inning weapons (Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances for Girardi; Jeurys Familia and Tyler Clippard for Collins), but each has had a heavy workload that will need to be monitored heading into October. As Davidoff notes, the presence of Clippard has been a godsend for the Mets, who had hoped to rely on a quartet of power arms — Vic Black, Bobby Parnell, Jenrry Mejia and Familia — only to see all but Familia work their way out of the team’s late-inning plans in one way or another.

NL West Notes: Diamondbacks, Gray, Padres, Giants

The Diamondbacks mismanaged their draft pool, tweets Jim Callis of MLB.com. The club took Dansby Swanson with the first overall pick and inked him at the last possible moment. In doing so, they spent $1.7MM less than their pool allowed. As MLBTR’s Steve Adams tweeted, the club could have spent up to $2.328MM more without losing a future draft pick. While a franchise shouldn’t spend that money just to spend it, they should have a few over-slot picks in the early rounds in order to make the most of limited resources.

  • The Rockies originally planned to promote top prospect Jon Gray for Sunday’s start, but they’ve backed off that decision, writes Nick Groke of the Denver Post. His last outing at Triple-A was a three-inning stinker in which he allowed four runs and six hits. The club will wait for a future opportunity to call upon their top pitching prospect. Eddie Butler will take tomorrow’s start.
  • Former Padres GM Josh Byrnes steadily built the farm system during his tenure with the club, writes Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Now current GM A.J. Preller is being second guessed for his bold decision to dismantle the farm for win-now talent. The club could be one year closer to a more organic revitalization, but now the farm system is shallow. Massive offseason overhauls have a bad track record – ask the Marlins and Blue Jays (and the White Sox). It’s also worth noting that Preller may have wanted to reshape the farm system to his preferences.
  • The Giants have built one of the best infields in the sport, notes Jonah Keri of Grantland. The home grown crew includes several surprising contributors. Brandon Belt was a well-regarded prospect – especially among sabermetric circles. However, Brandon Crawford’s offensive emergence was unexpected. Joe Panik is deceptively well-rounded. Matt Duffy was supposed to back up Casey McGehee. Instead, he’s arguably the best rookie in the National League, a class that includes Kris Bryant and Maikel Franco among others.
