Bobby Valentine told Jack Curry of the YES Network that he doesn't think the Mariners are "a fit" for him (Twitter link). Seattle has a managerial opening and some have suggested that Valentine could be a target for the Mariners.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter told Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times that he would be shocked if former Mariners skipper Don Wakamatsu had trouble finding a job.
The Mariners signed former big leaguer Tug Hulett and assigned him to Triple A, according to the transactions page for the Pacific Coast League. Hulett, now 27, appeared in 15 games for the Royals last year.
The Rangers are considering free agent Alex Cora, though they have not offered the infielder a deal, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter).
The Brockton Rox of the independent Can-Am League signed former Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee, according to the AP (via CBSSports.com). Lee, who last faced a major league hitter in 1982, is now 63 years old!
The Astros announced that an arbitration panel decided that the team was within its rights to terminate Shawn Chacon’s contract without pay after the pitcher's physical confrontation with GM Ed Wade in 2008.

Luke Scott was claimed on waivers this month and pulled back, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Not a big surprise, but now we know Scott won't be traded in August.
Ichiro Suzuki has talked to Mariners ownership about hiring Bobby Valentine to manage, tweets MLB Network's Peter Gammons. However, Larry Stone of the Seattle Times hears that Ichiro has not approached the Mariners about Valentine.

The Indians signed tenth round pick Tyler Holt according to Baseball America's Jim Callis. Holt's $500K bonus is the largest we've seen for a player drafted in a double-digit round this year.
Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News wonders how much the Texas heat will play into Cliff Lee's decision about whether or not to re-sign with the Rangers after the season.
MLB.com' Brittany Ghiroli tweets that Orioles' third rounder Dan Klein is expected to report to one of the team's minor league affiliates once he passes his physical, indicating that the two sides have a deal in place.

Valentine Interested In Cubs’ Managerial Opening

Bobby Valentine says that he is interested in succeeding Lou Piniella as Cubs manager, writes Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. Valentine discussed the soon-to-be vacant position prior to the Cubs' home contest against the Cardinals:

"As far as the job coming open at the end of the season, anyone that considers himself a manager would think about how attractive this opportunity is, and every once in a while I consider myself a manager," Valentine said.

Valentine, who never spoken with the Ricketts family, appeared to be on the verge of signing on with the Marlins in June before negotiations fell apart. He was also a candidate for the Orioles job before removing his name from consideration.

Sullivan writes that Cubs GM Jim Hendry is known to be high on Valentine and is likely to grant him an interview at some point.

Bobby Valentine Rumors: Monday

4:10pm: The Marlins are "strongly considering" Bo Porter, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (via Twitter). So what does that mean for Valentine? It's hard to say. Marlins president David Samson would not comment on Valentine to Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post (Twitter link).

9:00am: The Marlins' flirtations with Bobby Valentine have become a confusing saga, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. On one hand, the FOX writers report that the Marlins already informed the commissioner's office that Valentine is out of the running for their manager position. Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel learned via email from Valentine last night that no formal interview has been scheduled. On the other hand, Valentine told ESPN last night that he's "in the middle of the process." One Rosenthal and Morosi source backs up Valentine's suggestion that talks are ongoing.

What's caused the impasse? Rosenthal and Morosi's sources differ, with one citing "philosophical differences" between Valentine and Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria and another pointing to opposition from president David Samson. In another column, Rosenthal deems the drama an embarrassment to the organization. He also calls the interviews of Bo Porter and Edwin Rodriguez "a mockery of Commissioner Bud Selig’s guidelines for minority hiring."

Valentine Not In Running For Marlins Job

10:12pm: The talks broke down not over Valentine's salary desires, but over philosophical differences, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. While their source indicated that the team's decision is final, the FOX Sports duo writes that the volatility of Valentine and owner Jeffrey Loria creates the possibility for a reversal.

Interim manager Edwin Rodriguez will remain manager for the Marlins' series against the Mets in Puerto Rico and the foreseeable future. The Marlins now figure to expand their search to other candidates.

9:30pm: Valentine is no longer a candidate for the job, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

7:57pm: On ESPN's Baseball Tonight, Valentine declined to quantify the chances of him becoming the Marlins' next skipper, writes Capozzi:

“I can’t mention that chance or percentage because I’m in the middle of the process," said Valentine.

Meanwhile, Valentine remains a candidate for a job, a high-placed source tells Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald (via Twitter).

5:27pm: Valentine says that he has no idea if he's still in the running for the Marlins job, tweets Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post.

4:55pm: Bobby Valentine is no longer in the running for the Marlins' managerial position, tweets Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated. Heyman added (also via Twitter) that he is uncertain of what derailed talks between the two parties as all signs pointed to the job being his just a few days ago.

On Friday, the former Mets manager and the Marlins reportedly had a tentative agreement in place. Valentine, a friend of owner Jeffrey Loria, has been linked to the Florida job since Fredi Gonzalez was let go earlier this week. On that same day, Bobby V told the Orioles that he was no longer interested in managing their club.

Marlins To Hire Bobby Valentine?

SATURDAY, 4:02pm: Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post tweets that the Marlins gave Rodriguez a last-minute formal interview. In a separate tweet, Capozzi says Rodriguez will travel to Puerto Rico, but it may not be as the manager.

FRIDAY, 7:24pm: In a text message, Valentine said no job offer has been made yet, and that the "process will take some time," according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.

1:00pm: A person involved in the negotiations confirmed to the Associated Press that Valentine was speaking with the Marlins today. The sides are moving closer to a deal (link via the Boston Herald).

9:15am: Valentine told Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post that any report suggesting he starts Monday is "absolutely not true." The Marlins plan to interview D'Backs third base coach Bo Porter. Capozzi, who believes Heyman's report is true, points out (via Twitter) that Valentine has to deny it.

8:19am: The Marlins will hire Bobby Valentine to manage the team, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (via Twitter). Valentine and the Marlins have at least a tentative deal in place (Twitter link).

Constant chatter has linked Valentine to the Marlins since they dismissed manager Fredi Gonzalez and Valentine withdrew his name from consideration for the Orioles' managerial job. According to ESPN, the network that currently employs Valentine, the Marlins are set to offer him a four-year deal.

Heyman says Valentine will start by Monday, when the Marlins play the team he once managed – the Mets – in Puerto Rico. That will add intrigue to the series, but will prevent interim manager Edwin Rodriguez from managing in his country of birth. Rodriguez, who is 1-1 since taking over the Marlins, became the first Puerto Rican-born manager in baseball history this week.

The Rangers released Toby Hall, according to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan (via Twitter). The catcher, who last played in the majors in 2008, was in extended spring training.
Peter Gammons wouldn't be surprised to see Bobby Valentine managing the Marlins by this weekend (Twitter link).
MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince explains that big league players such as Rod Barajas, Daniel Nava and Frank Herrmann were not drafted at all.
The Red Sox are expected to put Mike Lowell on the DL to make room for Daisuke Matsuzaka, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. The Red Sox have not used Lowell much, leading to trade speculation, but the DL stint won't do much for his value.

Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that fifth overall pick Drew Pomeranz is scheduled to go to Cleveland on Monday to take a physical and "hear the Indians' sales pitch." Hoynes says there have been no negotiations to date.
Marlins' president David Samson told Clark Spencer of The Miami Herald that they're "not ready to say for certain that trade didn't work," referring to the Miguel Cabrera blockbuster (Twitter link). Both Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin, the two centerpieces of the deal for Florida, have struggled in the big leagues and are currently in the minors.
Upon hearing about Boston's interest in his services, Adam Everett said "I haven't heard that, but great team, great city, and it sounds interesting," according to FoxSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi (via Twitter).
Ken Davidoff of Newsday tweets the leaders in wins above replacement, or WAR, from last year's free agent class. Andy Pettitte tops the list, followed closely by Livan Hernandez and Aubrey Huff.
