Rockies Rumors: Embree, Shouse, Taveras, Atkins

By Tim Dierkes | November 26, 2008 at 11:40am CDT

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has the latest on the Rockies.

Manager Clint Hurdle says the Rockies are focused on adding pitching, particularly in the bullpen.  On the radar: Aaron Heilman, Alan Embree, Joe Beimel, and Brian Shouse.  Yesterday Joel Sherman said the Mets balked at the idea of swapping Heilman and Pedro Feliciano for Huston Street.

Renck adds that the Reds and White Sox remain interested in outfielder Willy Taveras.  On November 11th, Tracy Ringolsby said the Reds were not interested in Taveras despite reports.  As for Garrett Atkins, Renck believes the market will take shape after Casey Blake signs.

Shouse Seeks Two Years

By Tim Dierkes | November 26, 2008 at 10:43am CDT

According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, free agent reliever Brian Shouse is looking for a two-year deal.  MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy first reported this on October 30th.  The Brewers want to do one year, and their recent signing of lefty R.J. Swindle may mean Shouse is less likely to re-sign.  The Rockies have discussed Shouse internally, according to Troy Renck.  The Tigers are another possibility.

Haudricourt also notes that Doug Melvin talked to Gabe Kapler but did not make an offer. Melvin may be more focused on lefthanded hitters.  It’s been suggested that the Red Sox could bring Kapler back.

Rockies Considering Embree, Shouse, Ohman

By Tim Dierkes | November 25, 2008 at 10:08am CDT

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post talked to Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, who said the team has internally discussed lefthanded free agent relievers Alan Embree, Brian Shouse, and Will Ohman.  Ken Rosenthal also suggests Embree is a possibility.

Another note from Rosenthal:

The Rockies, at least for the moment, seem content to keep third baseman Garrett Atkins and the three players they acquired in the Matt Holliday trade – left-hander Greg Smith, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and reliever Huston Street.

Thinking about Street…it makes the most sense to trade him in June or July.  Right now the supply for closers outstrips the demand, plus Street did not finish the season as a closer.  The Rockies should let him rack up 20 saves, prove he’s on top of his game, and then move him during the summer when contenders are desperate for bullpen help.

Brewers Prepare Offers For Sabathia, Sheets

By Tim Dierkes | October 31, 2008 at 2:37pm CDT

According to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy, the Brewers will submit a formal contract offer to C.C. Sabathia today.  Ken Rosenthal heard Wednesday that the offer might be in the four-year, $100MM range.  Brewers GM Doug Melvin doesn’t expect to hear back from Sabathia’s agent (Greg Genske) soon, but notes that Sabathia should only have a handful of serious suitors.

Melvin will also submit an offer soon for Ben Sheets.  He’ll further discuss the possibility with Casey Close at next week’s GM meetings.  Sheets and Sabathia are Type A free agents, so the Brewers could net four draft picks if they leave.  In that case I’d expect them to pursue another starter.

Lefty reliever Brian Shouse prefers Milwaukee, but the 40 year-old hopes for a two-year deal.
