Outrighted To Triple-A: Cardinals, Solis, Fick

By Mike Axisa | November 3, 2012 at 1:48pm CDT

Here are today's outright assignments…

  • The Cardinals have outrighted Steven Hill, Bryan Anderson, and Adam Reifer to Triple-A, reports Brian Walton of Scout.com. Catchers Hill, 27, and Anderson, 25, have made brief cameos with St. Louis in recent years while Reifer, a 26-year-old right-hander, has never played in the show.
  • The Pirates have outrighted Ali Solis to Triple-A according to the MLB.com transactions page. Pittsburgh claimed the 25-year-old backstop from the Padres late last month, after he hit .283/.307/.419 with San Diego's Double-A affiliate and earned a September call-up.
  • The Astros outrighted Chuckie Fick to Triple-A, the team announced. Houston claimed the 26-year-old right-hander from the Cardinals in July, and he pitched to a 4.30 ERA in 23 innings for Houston down the stretch.

Top Trade Chips: NL Central

By Mike Axisa | April 10, 2010 at 9:40am CDT

Let's continue our series looking at each team's top trade chips with the NL Central…

  • Astros: Teams can ask for Hunter Pence, but it's just not happening. 26-year-old catcher J.R. Towles and his five years of team control could be shopped with top prospect Jason Castro coming up behind him. If Houston falls way out of it, Roy Oswalt could be made available, but it would be a massive PR hit. He's owed $31MM through 2011 with a $16MM option ($2MM buyout) for 2012, and would have to approve any trade. Dealing him would signify the start of a full rebuilding effort.
  • Brewers: Yovani Gallardo was never going to be moved in the first place, but his new contract extension all but guarantees it. Manny Parra seems to have fallen out of favor, but a lefty who can dial it up to the mid-90's will always have value on the trade market. He still has three years of arbitration eligibility ahead of him.
  • Cardinals: The Cards dealt away most of their top prospects for Matt Holliday and Mark DeRosa last year, so there's not much left to move. Triple-A catcher Bryan Anderson and Double-A outfielder Daryl Jones could be used in a trade since the big league team is pretty well set at those positions. Jones is more highly regarded of the two. Colby Rasmus is untouchable, obviously.
  • Cubs: Josh Vitters, the third overall pick in 2007, watched his name pop up in trade rumors involving Jake Peavy last year. If Chicago is willing to eat some of the $26.5MM left on his contract, there would be interest in Kosuke Fukudome.
  • Pirates: Neal Huntington has completely turned over the team's roster since taking over in September 2007, dealing away every notable veteran player. He did, however, build up a nice inventory of veteran relievers this offseason. Octavio Dotel, D.J. Carrasco, Brendan Donnelly, and Javier Lopez could all be used as trade fodder this summer.
  • Reds: Cincinnati is clearly a team on the rise, but one young player they could make available is the blocked Yonder Alonso. The power hitting first baseman masquerading as a left fielder in Double-A has all six years of team control left, and is the best trade chip in the division.

Cardinals’ Offseason Plans

By Tim Dierkes | November 3, 2008 at 9:08am CDT

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch explains the Cardinals’ offseason plans.  The areas of concern: middle infield, lefthanded relief, and perhaps the rotation (maybe a swingman type pitcher).  The Cards would also like an impact bat to protect Albert Pujols, but that is of lower priority.

Strauss says the Cardinals will investigate the price for Brian Fuentes and Joe Beimel.  They’ll also consider bringing Edgar Renteria back to St. Louis on a one-year deal worth considerably less than $10MM.  The Cards should have $20MM+ to spend in total.

As for trade chips, young catcher Bryan Anderson could be one.  Second baseman Adam Kennedy wants out, but has negative trade value.  The Cards could also move an outfielder.  Derrick Goold of the P-D suggests possible matches.

Odds and Ends: Bay, Clement, Fuentes, Cabrera

By Tim Dierkes | August 4, 2008 at 12:01pm CDT

We’ve got plenty of links today.

  • There is speculation that Andruw Jones could be sent back to the minors.
  • Joel Sherman wonders if MLB should’ve gotten involved when Manny Ramirez decided to orchestrate his own exit.  Kind of reminds me of Gary Sheffield intentionally botching plays to force a trade out of Milwaukee in ’92.
  • Gordon Edes stands by his report that Manny pledged to give full effort if the Red Sox dropped his options.  That phone call between Scott Boras and Theo Epstein occurred within an hour of his trade to the Dodgers.
  • Jon Heyman takes us inside the Manny trade.  He says Ramirez signed an agreement in advance that he’d accept a trade to any team if his options were dropped.  Heyman believes Omar Minaya fibbed in saying he had failed trade discussions with Boston.
  • The Red Sox are still waiting to hear whether Joe Borowski will accept their offer of a minor league deal.
  • Dejan Kovacevic gives as inside look at the Jason Bay trade talks here and here.  Did the Rays offer Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann?  Reports are conflicting.
  • The Cardinals released Matt Clement on Saturday.  Let this serve as another reminder of how hard it is to come back from shoulder surgery.
  • The Cardinals weren’t willing to trade catching prospect Bryan Anderson plus a pitching prospect for Brian Fuentes.  Also, GM John Mozeliak confirmed failed talks for Bay.
  • RotoAuthority takes a look at young pitchers who may face innings caps this year.
  • Another failed deal: Orlando Cabrera to the Orioles in a Brian Roberts deal.
  • Geoff Baker believes that when inside information related to the Blue Jays leaks out, GM J.P. Ricciardi is likely responsible.
  • Please continue to email me if you see a pop-up or full-page ad on MLB Trade Rumors.

C.C. Sabathia Rumors

By Tim Dierkes | June 16, 2008 at 10:24am CDT

This topic isn’t going anywhere.  Let’s take a look at today’s C.C. Sabathia rumors.

  • Scouts were in Cleveland yesterday to watch him pitch, though Paul Hoynes doesn’t identify the teams.
  • With Chien-Ming Wang’s season in peril, the Yankees’ interest in Sabathia has increased according to Tyler Kepner.
  • In his Mock Blockbuster series, Dayn Perry suggests the Cardinals should trade Colby Rasmus and Bryan Anderson for Sabathia.
  • Nick Cafardo talked to an AL GM who is skeptical that Sabathia will be dealt.

Crasnick’s Latest: Lee, Wells, Bay

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 3:24pm CDT

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick just cranked out a bunch of good stuff.

  • The Indians have talked to the Cardinals about sending Cliff Lee over for Anthony Reyes and catcher Bryan Anderson.
  • The Giants could trade for Ben Broussard, but want to see if he’s non-tendered first.
  • Kip Wells is being marketed as a setup man, since things didn’t work out as a starter.  Who knows, he puts a few mph on the heater in relief and maybe he takes off.
  • Crasnick kills the Bay for Shoppach/Lee rumor…didn’t seem right to begin with.
