Carlos Ramirez

Minor MLB Transactions: 2/6/19

By Steve Adams | February 6, 2019 at 7:15pm CDT

Here are the day’s minor transactions from around the game…

  • The Cubs announced a list of 27 non-roster invitees to Major League Spring Training, including the addition of right-hander Carlos Ramirez. The 27-year-old (28 in April) logged 25 innings at the big league level between the Blue Jays and Athletics across the past two seasons, working to a combined 2.88 ERA in that time but with a less-impressive 19-to-12 K/BB ratio. He’s had some success in the upper minors, posting a 2.71 ERA with 65 strikeouts against 28 walks in 63 innings of work at the Triple-A level. Ramirez represents the latest in a series of low-cost and/or minor league signees that the Cubs have added in an effort to bolster their bullpen depth while operating under the specter of payroll constraints.

Minor MLB Transactions: 8/3/18

By Jeff Todd | August 3, 2018 at 8:14pm CDT

We’ll use this post to track the day’s minor moves:

  • The Athletics have outrighted right-hander Carlos Ramirez, who cleared waivers after being designated for assignment recently. Ramirez, 27, has allowed just eight earned runs on nine hits in his 25 MLB innings over the past two years. Of course, he also dished out nine free passes to go with only five strikeouts in 8 1/3 frames this season. Ramirez has spent most of his time of late in the upper minors. At Triple-A this year, in 32 1/3 innings with the A’s and Blue Jays organizations, Ramirez has worked to a 5.01 ERA with 9.2 K/9 against 5.6 BB/9.

Athletics Designate Carlos Ramirez For Assignment

By Steve Adams | August 1, 2018 at 6:17pm CDT

The A’s announced Wednesday that they’ve designated right-hander Carlos Ramirez for assignment. His spot will go to outfielder Boog Powell, who has been activated from the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Nashville. Oakland also announced that young outfielder Dustin Fowler has been optioned to Nashville as well.

Ramirez, 27, was claimed off waivers out of the Blue Jays organization earlier this year and appeared in three games earlier this summer before being optioned to Nashville in mid-June. Ramirez has logged 25 innings in the Majors between Toronto and Oakland, pitching to a 2.88 ERA — albeit with a lackluster 19-to-12 K/BB ratio. He’s spent parts of two seasons at the Triple-A level as well, where he’s notched a 3.50 ERA with 9.5 K/9 against 4.5 BB/9 in 46 1/3 innings.

The A’s will have a week to find a taker for Ramirez or run him through outright waivers in hopes of keeping him in the organization. He does have two option years remaining beyond the 2018 season, so he could appeal to other organizations in search of some bullpen flexibility.

A’s Place Matt Chapman On 10-Day DL, Recall Franklin Barreto

By Kyle Downing | June 16, 2018 at 12:07pm CDT

The Athletics have made a series of roster moves in advance of today’s game against the Angels. The club’s PR department announced that third baseman Matt Chapman has been placed on the DL with a right thumb contusion, retroactive to yesterday. In a related move, the club has recalled infielder Franklin Barreto. Right-hander Josh Lucas has also been recalled, with fellow righty Carlos Ramirez headed to Triple-A in order to make room on the active roster.

As the PR department mentions in the above link, Chapman had played in all 69 of the A’s games prior to today. He’s hit 10 homers on the year and is batting .250/.346/.447. Chapman was hit by a pitch on the hand in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s game against the Astros. Because he remained in the game, it seemed at the time as though the injury wasn’t serious, but his placement on the DL says otherwise.

Barreto, meanwhile, will be up for his third bout with the MLB club this season. Long considered one of the organization’s top prospects, the young infielder has managed just a .182/.241/.325 batting line across 83 career plate appearances at the major-league level, striking out a catastrophic 43.4% of the time. He’s still just 22, however, so there’s still plenty of room for optimism surrounding his growth and development.

Lucas has been used in an intriguing capacity so far this year, having pitched at least two full innings in three of his four appearances on the season (only one start). He owns a 2.89 ERA across his 9 1/3 innings, with ten strikeouts against five walks. It’s not at all far-fetched to think that he’s simply up as a fresh arm to provide cavalry to an exhausted bullpen, as A’s starters have averaged fewer than four innings per start across the club’s past four games.

Athletics Claim Carlos Ramirez From Blue Jays

By Connor Byrne | May 20, 2018 at 2:12pm CDT

The Athletics have claimed right-hander Carlos Ramirez off waivers from the Blue Jays, per an announcement from Oakland.

Oakland will be the second organization for the 27-year-old Ramirez, who had been with the Blue Jays since 2009. Ramirez started off as an outfield prospect with the Jays before moving to the mound in 2014. He impressed enough as a minor league pitcher to reach the majors in 2017, and has since logged a combined 19 innings at the game’s highest level (2 1/3 this year). During that small sample of work, Ramirez posted a 2.84 ERA/4.84 FIP with 8.05 K/9, 3.79 BB/9 and a 33.3 percent groundball rate, but that wasn’t enough to prevent Toronto from designating him for assignment last week.

Given that Ramirez has three options remaining, he seems likely to start off as minors depth with the Athletics. The A’s currently have a full bullpen, and the unit has begun the year with the majors’ 12th-best ERA (3.82).

Blue Jays Designate Carlos Ramirez

By Connor Byrne | May 13, 2018 at 11:02am CDT

The Blue Jays have designated right-hander Carlos Ramirez for assignment, per a team announcement. The club also selected righty Deck McGuire from Triple-A Buffalo and optioned infielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

Ramirez, who debuted with the Blue Jays organization in 2014, garnered his first big league experience last season. The 27-year-old notched a 2.70 ERA with 7.56 K/9, 1.62 BB/9 and a 27 percent groundball rate over that 16 2/3-inning span. Ramirez then tossed just 2 1/3 major league frames this season prior to his designation, allowing an earned run on one hit and five walks (with three strikeouts).

McGuire, 28, is in his second stint with the Blue Jays. The first began in 2010 with quite a bit of fanfare, as the club selected McGuire 11th overall in the draft. McGuire was unable to work his way to the majors with Toronto, though, and the club went on to trade him to Oakland for cash considerations in 2014. McGuire then spent time with Dodgers, Cardinals and Reds, making his big league debut with the latter in 2017. He fared nicely over 13 2/3 innings (2.63 ERA, 7.24 K/9, 1.32 BB/9) before returning to the Jays on a minors pact last November.

Gurriel, whom Toronto signed to a seven-year, $22MM deal in 2016, has struggled in his MLB debut this season. The 24-year-old racked up 70 plate appearances prior to his demotion and hit just .206/.229/.309 with two home runs, two walks and 17 strikeouts. Gurriel is now set for his first Triple-A action, having previously jumped from Double-A to the majors.
