Phillies Acquire Devin Sweet, Claim John McMillon

The Phillies announced they acquired reliever Devin Sweet from the Tigers and added him to the 40-man roster. Philadelphia also claimed reliever John McMillon off waivers from the Marlins and selected righty Alan Rangel onto the 40-man. The Phils dropped Kolby Allard, Yunior Marté, Freddy Tarnok, Luis Ortiz and Rodolfo Castro from the roster by running them through outright waivers.

Sweet had not been on Detroit’s 40-man roster. He was set to reach minor league free agency today. While Detroit evidently wasn’t going to select his contract, the Phils were intrigued enough to carry him on the roster. The 28-year-old righty posted big numbers for the Tigers’ top affiliate in Toledo. Sweet struck out almost 34% of Triple-A hitters and posted a 3.91 ERA through 76 innings. He has limited MLB experience, allowing 10 runs in 8 2/3 innings between two teams in 2023.

McMillon changes hands via waivers for the second time in a few months. Miami grabbed the 6’3″ righty from Kansas City in early August. McMillon pitched well over 10 appearances for the Fish but ended the year on the injured list with elbow tightness. The Texas Tech product has an earned run average approaching 5.00 over four seasons in the minors. He averages north of 95 MPH on his fastball, so it’s a low-risk flier on a pitcher with a decent arm and two minor league options remaining.

Rangel, 27, signed a minor league deal with Philadelphia in July. The Mexican-born righty tossed 29 1/3 innings of 4.30 ERA ball in a swing role in Triple-A. He didn’t miss many bats but showed solid control. Rangel, who has yet to make his big league debut, would have been eligible for minor league free agency again this winter.

Of the players coming off the roster, Allard and Marté had the biggest roles this year. The former worked as a depth starter and posted an even 5.00 earned run average through 27 innings. The latter was hit hard to the tune of a 6.92 ERA across 26 frames in a middle relief role. Ortiz made one appearance but missed the majority of the year to ankle and shoulder problems. Castro played in Triple-A, where he tore a thumb ligament in August. Tarnok didn’t pitch in the majors after the Phillies claimed him from the A’s in June.

Tigers Claim Kolton Ingram From Angels, DFA Nick Maton

The Tigers claimed left-handed pitcher Kolton Ingram off waivers from the Angels, according to announcements from both teams. As a corresponding move, Detroit designated utility infielder Nick Maton for assignment. In additional Tigers news, the team announced that right-handed pitcher Devin Sweet has cleared waivers and been sent outright to Triple-A Toledo.

Ingram was initially selected by the Tigers in the 37th round of the 2019 draft. However, his time with the organization was short-lived. The southpaw was released in July 2020, having made just 15 appearances in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. He signed a new deal with the Angels ahead of the 2021 season and eventually worked his way up to the majors in 2023, pitching 5 1/3 innings across three separate stints with the big league club. Although his MLB numbers were disappointing (8.44 ERA, 5.21 SIERA), his performance between Double- and Triple-A was far more impressive. In 61 innings, he pitched to a 2.95 ERA with a 30.2% strikeout rate and a .189 batting average against. He figures to compete with fellow lefty Joey Wentz, as well as righties Miguel Díaz, Beau Brieske, and Brendan White for a spot at the back end of Detroit’s bullpen. The fact that Ingram has option years remaining could work against him; both Díaz and Wentz are out of options.

Maton came to the Motor City as part of the trade package the Tigers acquired from the Phillies in exchange for Gregory Soto. In his lone season with Detroit, Maton appeared in 93 games, primarily at third base but also at second and shortstop. While his versatility was helpful for manager A. J. Hinch, the 26-year-old struggled to contribute at the plate. In 293 plate appearances, he slashed .173/.288/.305, good for a paltry .593 OPS and 67 wRC+. By FanGraphs’ calculation of Wins Above Replacement, only six AL players were less valuable to their clubs in 2023.

Despite his struggles, not all is lost for Maton. In fact, there are several reasons to believe he is due for some positive regression. Both his 13.0% walk rate and 24.9% strikeout rate last season were significantly better than his career totals to date. He also increased his barrel rate from 6.7% to 8.4%. What’s more, his .206 BABIP was unusually low, and he can expect that number to rise in future seasons. Finally, his poor performance at third base, a position he had limited experience playing before this season, dragged down his defensive metrics, and therefore, his overall WAR. For a team in need of a lefty-batting second baseman who can fill in at shortstop, third base, and the corner spots in a pinch, Maton could be worth a shot.

Sweet, a right-handed reliever, made his MLB debut last summer for the Mariners. He was designated for assignment a few weeks later, after which he landed with the Athletics for the final month of the season. Overall, he made seven appearances at the MLB level, where he gave up 10 runs in 8 2/3 innings, and 36 appearances in the minors, where he posted a much prettier 2.25 ERA. The Giants claimed him off of waivers from the A’s in December, and the Tigers subsequently claimed him off of waivers from the Giants a month later. He was designated for assignment again last week to make room for top prospect Colt Keith on the 40-man roster after Keith signed a six-year extension. After bouncing around between four different organizations over the past year, Sweet has finally cleared waivers and will remain in the Tigers organization as additional pitching depth.

Tigers Designate Devin Sweet For Assignment

The Tigers announced Monday that they’ve designated right-hander Devin Sweet for assignment. His spot on the 40-man roster will go to newly extended top prospect Colt Keith, who inked a six-year deal with three club options over the weekend.

Detroit only claimed Sweet off waivers 11 days ago — marking his fourth organization in four months. He’s gone from Seattle to Oakland to San Francisco and Detroit via waivers, and the Tigers will now have a week to either trade Sweet or place him on outright waivers yet again. If he clears, the Tigers could retain him as Triple-A depth, but the sheer volume of teams who’ve put in a claim on Sweet suggest there’s a chance he could yet again be claimed.

In 44 innings between the Double-A and Triple-A levels this past season, the formerly undrafted free agent notched a pristine 2.25 ERA with a 32.6% strikeout rate and 6.3% walk rate. Sweet isn’t a flamethrower — he averaged 93 mph on his heater with Seattle — but has consistently missed bats and avoided walks as a professional. In five minor league seasons, he’s whiffed 29% of his opponents against a 7% walk rate. He has a pair of minor league options remaining, too, which will certainly appeal to other teams looking for some flexible bullpen depth in the late stages of the offseason.

Tigers Claim Devin Sweet, Designate Tyler Nevin

The Tigers announced Thursday that they’ve claimed right-hander Devin Sweet off waivers from the Giants and opened a spot on their 40-man roster by designating infielder Tyler Nevin for assignment.

Detroit will be Sweet’s fourth organization in as many months. The right-hander went from the Mariners to the A’s in early September, from the A’s to the Giants in December and now to the Tigers — all via waiver claims. San Francisco hadn’t previously indicated that Sweet had been designated for assignment, but last week’s agreement with Jordan Hicks and acquisition of catcher/outfielder Cooper Hummel pushed the team’s roster up to 41 players.

As for Nevin, he’ll lose his hold on a 40-man roster spot after a season that saw him bat just .200/.306/.316 through 111 trips to the plate. The son of former MLB All-Star and Angels skipper Phil Nevin, Tyler has appeared in three MLB seasons and thus far managed only a .203/.310/.301 batting line. The Rockies originally selected Nevin 38th overall in 2015, and he’s posted a solid .276/.355/.464 slash in 242 games at the Triple-A level. That includes a huge .326/.400/.543 slash (136 wRC+) in 385 Triple-A plate appearances this past season.

Nevin has experience at all four corner positions, with the bulk of his big league time coming at the hot corner. He’s out of minor league options, so any team that wants to bet on his pedigree and solid Triple-A performance will have to carry him on the 40-man roster or expose him to waivers before he can be sent down to the minors. The Tigers will have a week to trade Nevin or attempt to pass him through outright waivers.

Giants Claim Devin Sweet From Athletics

The Giants have claimed right-hander Devin Sweet off waivers from the Athletics, per Grant Brisbee of The Athletic.

Sweet, 27, was an undrafted free agent but continued to raise his stock in the minors with good results, largely based on the success of his changeup. In 2023, he started at Double-A in the Mariners’ system and got selected to the big league roster in mid-July. At that point, he had a 1.54 earned run average in 35 innings over 27 appearances. He struck out 34.6% of opponents while walking just 5.9% of them, getting onto the back end of top 30 prospects lists at both Baseball America and FanGraphs.

His first bits of experience at the major league level didn’t go well. He tossed two innings for the Mariners and then 6 2/3 for the A’s after a waiver claim. He allowed a combined 10 earned runs in that time, meaning his career ERA is currently 10.38, though in an obviously tiny sample.

The A’s agreed to a deal with Trevor Gott last week and needed to open a roster spot for him. It appears they tried to pass Sweet through waivers but the Giants swooped in to make an interception, using one of their three roster spots, with this move taking their 40-man count to 38.

Sweet still has a couple of options, so he won’t be guaranteed an active roster spot in San Francisco. He can provide his new club with some roster flexibility as a depth add for their bullpen. He has just 47 days of major league service time, meaning he can be a long-term piece for the Giants as long as he continues to justify his spot on the 40-man.

A’s Designate Spencer Patton For Assignment, Select Easton Lucas

The Athletics announced today that they have reinstated right-hander Mason Miller from the injured list, selected left-hander Easton Lucas and recalled right-hander Devin Sweet from Triple-A Las Vegas. In corresponding moves, left-hander Sam Long and right-hander Zach Neal were optioned to Triple-A and righty Spencer Patton was designated for assignment.

Patton, 35, signed a minor league deal with the club in April and has twice now been selected for short stints with the big league club. He got into four games in May before being designated for assignment. He cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment, which allowed him to return a few weeks ago, having made another eight appearances since then. Between those two stints, he has a 5.11 earned run average in 12 1/3 innings, striking out just 12.7% of hitters while walking 10.9%.

The A’s will place him on waivers in the coming days. It’s possible the same sequence of events plays out as earlier in the season, with Patton going unclaimed. He will again have the right to elect free agency at that time. In 113 career games in the majors dating back to 2014, he has a 5.11 ERA. He also spent 2017 to 2020 in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball with a 3.68 ERA in that league.

Lucas, 26, gets selected to a big league roster for the first time and will be making his major league debut as soon as he gets into a game. Selected by the Marlins in 14th round of the 2019 draft, he was traded to the Orioles that December for infielder Jonathan Villar. He was then involved in another swap, going to the A’s a few months back as the return in the deal that sent right-hander Shintaro Fujinami to Baltimore.

Between the two organizations, he’s tossed 46 2/3 innings this year at Double-A and Triple-A. He has a combined 3.86 ERA, along with a 25.8% strikeout rate and 8.6% walk rate. He will join Sean Newcomb and Francisco Pérez as the club’s left-handed relievers for the time being and try to earn his way into the club’s plans for next year.

Athletics Claim Devin Sweet From Mariners

The A’s have claimed right-hander Devin Sweet off waivers from the Mariners.  Sweet was designated for assignment earlier this week.

The 26-year-old made his Major League debut this season, appearing in two games with Seattle and posting two innings (with a 9.00 ERA).  An undrafted free agent in 2018, Sweet is changing teams for the first time in his pro career, as he has a 3.67 ERA over 326 1/3 career innings in the Mariners’ farm system.

Those numbers include only seven innings at the Triple-A level, as Sweet was actually promoted to the majors from Double-A Arkansas for his two MLB games before he ever pitched for Triple-A Tacoma.  He got the Mariners’ attention with a 1.54 ERA, 34.6% strikeout rate and 5.9% walk rate over 35 innings of Double-A ball, a decided step up from his work in Arkansas in 2021-22.  Most prominently, Sweet showed great improvement at keeping the ball in the park, as he gave just one homer over those 35 frames at Double-A this year after allowing 27 homers over 137 2/3 innings in 2021-22.

It makes for some interesting potential, and it isn’t surprising that the rebuilding Athletics would want to take a look at a young and controllable arm.  Oakland has optioned Sweet to Triple-A for now, but might very well call him up for some more Major League action before the season is over.

Mariners Designate Devin Sweet For Assignment

The Mariners announced that they have claimed righty Dominic Leone off waivers, a move that was reported on earlier today. They also announced that righty Devin Sweet has been designated for assignment to open a spot for Leone on their 40-man roster.

Sweet, 26, was just selected to the roster about six weeks ago. He made two appearances for the big league club, allowing two earned runs in two innings, before getting optioned to Triple-A Tacoma. He made seven appearances for that club with a 2.57 earned run average but has now lost his 40-man roster spot to make room for the veteran Leone.

An undrafted free agent who signed with the M’s in 2018, he climbed his way up to Double-A by the end of last year. Prior to his call-up to the majors, he tossed 35 Double-A innings this year with a 1.54 ERA, 34.6% strikeout rate and 5.9% walk rate.

The M’s will now have to put Sweet on waivers in the coming days, since the trade deadline has passed. He is using the first of his three option years here in 2023 but will still have two remaining for the future. He also has just a handful of service days, giving him at least six seasons of future control. Those factors and his strong Double-A work earlier this year should give him some appeal to other clubs around the league, especially with several spots opening up with expanded September rosters and various waiver claims being made this week. But if he were to go unclaimed, he would stick with the Mariners as non-roster depth, not having the right to elect free agency.

Mariners Outright Zach Muckenhirn

August 11: The Mariners announced today that Muckenhirn cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma.

August 9: The Mariners have officially selected the contract of prospect Emerson Hancock, a move that was reported yesterday. In corresponding transactions, the M’s optioned right-hander Devin Sweet to Triple-A and designated left-hander Zach Muckenhirn for assignment.

Muckenhirn, 28, made his major league debut with the Mets earlier this year, tossing six innings over three appearances with four earned runs allowed. He was designated for assignment in July and then promptly traded to the Mariners as part of the deal that sent Trevor Gott and Chris Flexen to Queens. Flexen was released by the Mets shortly thereafter, highlighting the fact that they were taking on Flexen’s contract in order to effectively buy Gott.

The M’s saved some money in that deal but also added Muckenhirn to their system, sending him to Triple-A Tacoma. He’s thrown 8 2/3 innings for that club with a 9.35 ERA in that small sample, which likely helped loosen his grip on a roster spot. But he had a much more palatable 0.88 ERA in 30 2/3 innings for the Syracuse Mets prior to the trade, giving him a combined 2.75 ERA at Triple-A this year. He’s only struck out 14.8% of opponents at that level but has kept the ball on the ground on close to half of the balls in play he’s allowed.

With the trade deadline now in the rear-view mirror, the M’s will have a week to put Muckenhirn on outright waivers or release waivers. Left-handed relief tends to always be in demand and Muckenhirn can serve as a long-term depth option since he has just a few days of service time and a full slate of options. His strikeouts haven’t been there this year but he punched out 23.8% of minor league hitters last season, in addition to consistently solid ground ball rates.

If the lefty were to pass through waivers unclaimed, he would stick with the M’s since he lacks the necessary service time or previous career outright that’s necessary for the right to elect free agency. But if he’s still not on the roster at season’s end, he would qualify for minor league free agency.

Mariners Promote Prelander Berroa, Devin Sweet

The Mariners announced a few roster moves prior to tonight’s game, selecting the contract of right-hander Devin Sweet and recalling fellow righty Prelander Berroa, with both players set to make their respective major league debuts as soon as they get into a game. In corresponding moves, right-handers Ty Adcock and Isaiah Campbell were optioned to Double-A Arkansas. The club already had a 40-man vacancy and won’t need to make a corresponding move in that regard.

Berroa, 23, came over the Mariners last year in a trade that sent Donovan Walton to the Giants. Berroa finished last year with a combined 2.86 earned run average across those two systems and different minor league levels, tossing 100 2/3 innings. The M’s liked him enough to give him a 40-man roster spot in November in order to protect him from being selected in the Rule 5 draft.

He started this year in the Double-A rotation but had a 5.16 ERA through his first five starts. He was moved to the bullpen at that point in a move that seems to have worked out quite well. He’s thrown 23 1/3 innings over 19 appearances since taking on a relief role, posting a 0.77 ERA in that time. His 13.5% walk rate is certainly on the high side but he’s limiting damage by striking out 39.3% of batters faced. He won’t be able to sustain a .238 batting average on balls in play or 90.9% strand rate but the results are nonetheless encouraging enough to earn him a big league look. He’s currently considered the club’s #10 prospect at Baseball America and #11 at FanGraphs.

The Mariners suffered a rough 10-3 loss at the hands of the Twins last night, with Bryan Woo allowing six earned runs and getting bounced in the fourth inning. Each of Adcock, Campbell and Tayler Saucedo tossed 29 pitches or more, while many of the high-leverage hurlers appeared in close games on both Monday and Sunday. With a fairly taxed relief corps, these moves give the club an injection of fresh arms.
