Odds & Ends: Mauer, Strasburg, Towers, Washburn

By Tim Dierkes | March 11, 2010 at 9:03pm CDT

Thursday linkage…

  • Just a reminder that MLBTR has a mobile site: http://www.mlbtraderumors.mobi.
  • Jim Souhan of The Star Tribune wonders if the Twins will be forced to trade Joe Mauer if they're unable to sign him to an extension. Meanwhile, MLB.com's Kelly Thesier says any talk about a trade involving the reigning AL MVP is premature..
  • MLB.com's Bill Ladson interviewed Stephen Strasburg, and they discussed everything from how he's getting used to pitching every five days to how he deals with all attention.
  • Tom Krasovic of AOL FanHouse says Kevin Towers will be announced as a member of the Yankees' front office on Tuesday.
  • Free agent Jarrod Washburn told Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports "the odds are probably not great" of him returning to Seattle this year.  Morosi's article explores the Mariners' question marks this year.  Click here for MLBTR's Offseason In Review of the club.
  • The Yankees have spent the most time scouting Cuban shortstop Adeiny Hechevarria, says George King of the New York Post.  The recently-unblocked 19-year-old is drawing interest from the Angels, Blue Jays, and Cubs.
  • Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer thinks the Indians should keep closer Kerry Wood, and explore their long shot at contending in the AL Central.
  • ESPN's Jayson Stark talked to impending free agents Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth about working alongside their possible future replacements, Desmond Jennings and Domonic Brown.
  • Marlins pitcher Hayden Penn has a relaxed attitude this time toward being out of options and on the roster bubble, writes Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.  Check out MLBTR's full list of out of options players here.

Marlins Meeting Notes: Uggla, Bullpen, Free Agents

By Steve Adams | December 7, 2009 at 2:21am CDT

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald looks at what's in store for the Marlins as the Winter Meetings approach:

  • No surprise here, but the Marlins won't be players for any reputable free agents. In fact, were you aware that over the past three offseasons, the most the Marlins have spent on any one free agent was the $2MM they gave Luis Gonzalez in 2007? Needless to say, Matt Holliday and Jason Bay aren't headed to South Florida.
  • The Giants have been one of the most outspoken suitors for Dan Uggla, but the Marlins have asked for Madison Bumgarner in any deal for Uggla. The Giants top pitching prospect is a hefty price to pay, and could lead the Giants to pursue other avenues to add some thunder.
  • As we've heard before, Renyel Pinto and Matt Lindstrom could very well be moved at the Winter Meetings.
  • Even if Pinto and Lindstrom stay put, the Marlins will be on the lookout for affordable bullpen help now that Kiko Calero and Brendan Donnelly have departed.
  • The Marlins will turn to internal options such as Gaby Sanchez and Logan Morrison to replace departed free agent Nick Johnson and his monstrous OBP.
  • Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco are the team's two locks for the starting rotation. From there, a combination of Anibal Sanchez, Andrew Miller, Sean West, Rick VandenHurk, Chris Volstad, and Hayden Penn will fill out the final three spots.

Spencer closes, quoting Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest: "We'll definitely be active… There's no reason to go there and not do anything. Whether that leads to anything is anyone's guess."

Odds & Ends: Tejada, Lohse, LaRussa

By Mike Axisa | June 3, 2009 at 9:21pm CDT

Some late night linkage as you wait to see if Randy Johnson picks up win number 300:

  • Jeff Zrebiec says that the Orioles may end up releasing Jamie Walker in the coming days.
  • MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that the Marlins will designate reliever Hayden Penn for assignment. It's unclear who will take his place on the roster.
  • MLB.com's Bill Ladson says not to expect to see Tom Glavine in a Nationals uniform, but the team wouldn't mind having him as pitching mentor/coach. Glavine and team president Stan Kasten have a long standing relationship.
  • Miguel Tejada wants to finish his career in Houston. With the Astros already seven games back of first and a handful of teams looking for upgrades at shortstop and/or third base, Tejada probably won't get his wish.
  • Kyle Lohse left tonight's start in the third inning when his right forearm discomfort returned. Just yesterday there was talk of the Cardinals dealing from their pitching depth to address their infield issues, but depth on the mound has a way of disappearing quickly.
  • Tony LaRussa is suing Twitter. Whether Tony likes it or not, Twitter is here to stay.

Mike Axisa writes for River Ave. Blues.

Marlins Acquire Hayden Penn For Robert Andino

By Tim Dierkes | April 1, 2009 at 4:21pm CDT

4:21pm: Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel has Larry Beinfest's thoughts on the Marlins' acquisitions today.  Berardino also says Dallas McPherson "might wind up with the Yankees."

11:54am: Interesting swap today: the Marlins acquired pitcher Hayden Penn from the Orioles for shortstop Robert Andino.  Both players are out of options.

Penn, 24, wasn't able to crack the Orioles' weak rotation.  Perhaps he can recover the promise he had back in '05 and '06 with a fresh start.

Andino, 25 later this month, hit .287/.356/.497 in his second attempt at Triple A.  He was blocked by Hanley Ramirez in Florida, but he plays strong defense and may be able to chip away at Cesar Izturis' playing time in Baltimore.  Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun says it looks like Chris Gomez will be released now.  Schmuck also has Andy MacPhail's explanation of the deal.

Orioles Face Hayden Penn Decision

By Tim Dierkes | March 27, 2009 at 3:33pm CDT

According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, 24 year-old Hayden Penn is one of five candidates for three open rotation spots on the Orioles (Adam Eaton and Mark Hendrickson may secure two of those).  The O's may also consider putting Penn in the bullpen.  The problem is that Penn is out of options and has had a lousy spring.  Zrebiec notes that the Padres have expressed interest in Penn in the past, so the Orioles probably can't slip him through waivers.

On Baseball America's Top 100 prospects list, Penn ranked 94th in '05 and 81st in '06.  Back in '06 BA said Penn threw three plus pitches for strikes and touched 96 with his fastball.
