Rockies Eyeing Byrd, Duchscherer

MONDAY: The Rockies won’t be acquiring Arroyo, but add Cleveland’s Paul Byrd to their list.  Buster Olney wonders whether Byrd might clear waivers in August if need be.  He has about $2.7MM left on his contract.

SUNDAY: According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Rockies have inquired on A’s starter Justin Duchscherer as part of their hunt for a starter.  Duchscherer is under team control through ’09.  As you know, the Rockies also asked the Reds about Bronson Arroyo

Olney notes that GM Dan O’Dowd continues to talk to other teams about Brian Fuentes.  It seems quite possible that the Rockies will try to have it both ways.

Carroll’s Latest: Duchscherer, Burnett, Ibanez, Cabrera

Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus has some rumors to consider this afternoon.

  • The Tigers are 5.5 games out, but are still on the fence about buying or selling.
  • Carroll says there’s "much more substance to rumors of the White Sox going after Justin Duchscherer" as compared to the one about the A’s pursuing Jason Bay.
  • The Phillies could jump back in on A.J. Burnett if the price comes down.  Also – could Burnett clear waivers in August?
  • The Rockies’ demands for Brian Fuentes might be holding up the relief market.
  • Regarding Raul Ibanez, the Mariners either want to tack Jose Vidro on in a deal or get back premium prospects.
  • The White Sox have become aggressive, and apparently had failed talks about Orlando Cabrera with the Red Sox.  Josh Fields is not considered untouchable.

Odds and Ends: Bedard, Hudson, Inoa, Varitek

Let’s dig through today’s links.

Odds and Ends: Nady, LaHair, Garcia, Bonds

Baseball is back today, but rumors are a bit light.  We’ll kick it off with odds and ends.

Odds and Ends: Taveras, Kemp, Mota

Today’s random linkage.

Duchscherer Hopes To Sign Extension With A’s

30 year-old righty Justin Duchscherer hadn’t started regularly since 2003.  He made the switch this year, and the result has been the best ERA in baseball (1.96) and an All-Star appearance.  Granted, that ERA isn’t sustainable (nor is a .227 BABIP or 5.7% HR per flyball rate).  Still, he’s having a fantastic year any way you slice it.

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Duchscherer hopes to sign a three-year extension to stay in Oakland.  That’d cover his last two arbitration years and one of free agency.  GM Billy Beane implied that he’d prefer to pursue a deal in the offseason, after Duchscherer completes a healthy season.  Over the last few years, he’s dealt with a biceps strain, hip surgery, and elbow tendinitis.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Beltre, Washburn, Escobar, Duchscherer

Ken Rosenthal brings us his latest Full Count video:

  • Rosenthal thinks the Mariners should consider dealing Adrian Beltre along with Erik Bedard by the deadline.  The A’s and Dodgers would be interested in the 29 year old.  Also, Jarrod Washburn‘s stock is rising.
  • If Kelvim Escobar makes a strong return to the Angels rotation, Jon Garland could wind up on the trading block.  As it stands, Escobar is slated for relief duties initially.
  • 30 year old Justin Duchscherer could be Billy Beane’s best trade piece.  His sparkling 1.99 ERA in combination with his being signed through this year for only $1.2MM make him a very palatable option.

Duchscherer To The Rotation?

According to Buster Olney, the A’s are thinking about moving 30 year-old Justin Duchscherer to the starting rotation.  Duke hasn’t started a big league game since 2003 (he started 20 in the minors that year).  His 2007 season ended in July as he opted for surgery on his arthritic hip.  He’s battled elbow, triceps, neck, and back problems in the past.

Why is this relevant to rumor junkies?  Because even if Duchscherer and Rich Harden are health question marks, more starting pitching depth increases the chances of a Joe Blanton or even a Dan Haren trade this winter.  As I mentioned in my A’s Needs and Luxuries post, Billy Beane’s best attribute seems to be digging up underappreciated starters.  Beane could trade one of his front-end rotation guys for a shortstop, third baseman, and/or top pitching prospect.  Chin-Lung Hu and Andy LaRoche would be a sweet bounty.
