Russell Branyan

Odds and Ends: Teixeira, Izturis, Gaudin

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2008 at 3:30pm CDT

Links for Thursday…

  • Check out this week’s minor league transactions.  Some familiar names were signed.
  • The Red Sox officially announced the signing of Junichi Tazawa.
  • J.C. Bradbury likes the Dustin Pedroia contract.
  • Sox Machine has parting words for Javier Vazquez, whose trade to the Braves was officially announced today.  ESPN’s Keith Law tells you all you need to know about the players involved in the deal.  Tyler Flowers is the key, Santos Rodriguez the wild card.
  • The Rockies’ talks for lefty reliever Joe Beimel continue. In another article, Patrick Saunders looks at the team’s wish list.
  • Rob Neyer believes teams are starting to figure out defensive evaluation, creating a weak market for lumbering LF/1B/DH types.
  • Jesse Spector spoke to Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski.
  • T.R. Sullivan says the Tigers’ talks for Rangers catcher Gerald Laird continue.
  • Larry Dobrow offers suggestions to fix the Reds.
  • Aaron Gleeman says the Twins have already missed several good opportunities to affordably improve their bullpen.
  • Viva El Birdos explains why the Cardinals should’ve offered arbitration to Russ Springer and Braden Looper.
  • Lee Jenkins provides insight into Mark Teixeira – the perfect baseball player and ideal Boras client.
  • Roch Kubatko says Cesar Izturis remains a strong possibility for the Orioles.
  • Fred Claire notes that Jack Zduriencik will always remember Russell Branyan as his first free agent signing.  Geoff Baker examines the Branyan signing and the Ken Griffey Jr. idea.
  • Paul Sullivan suggests Chad Gaudin is a non-tender candidate for the Cubs.  He’s set to get an arbitration raise on this year’s $1.775MM salary.

Mariners Sign Russell Branyan

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2008 at 8:22am CDT

THURSDAY: We didn’t mention this yesterday – Branyan gets $1.4MM on his one-year deal.

WEDNESDAY: According to Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune, the Mariners signed infielder Russell Branyan to a one-year deal.  Branyan, 33 later this month, hit .250/.342/.583 in 152 plate appearances for the Brewers this year.  It’s hardly an impact signing, but Branyan’s still a solid pickup as long as he doesn’t face lefties.  The Mariners seemingly plan to give Branyan near-regular playing time.

Odds and Ends: Bonds, Davis, Chulk, Ichiro

By Tim Dierkes | June 26, 2008 at 2:28pm CDT

Time for some random linkage.

  • I’ll be on XM Radio today at about 5pm CST – channels 176-189 with Mike Ferrin.
  • The Dodgers signed Jerome Williams – remember him?
  • Viva El Birdos runs through starting pitchers who might be on the Cardinals’ radar.
  • Sam Mellinger of the KC Star takes a look at Dayton Moore’s trade record.  Meanwhile, Joe Posnanski explains why the Royals should sign Barry Bonds.
  • Ken Rosenthal doesn’t want to let Ed Wade off the hook in the Shawn Chacon dustup.
  • Red Reporter thinks the Reds are winning the Edinson Volquez–Josh Hamilton swap.
  • Rangers first base prospect Chris Davis is getting the call.
  • Russell Branyan has been training his eyes.
  • "Unsubstantiated report" – the Phillies might have interest in recently-designated reliever Vinnie Chulk.
  • Mariners beat writer Geoff Baker expects the team to shop Ichiro.
  • Buster Olney sees the Rays as a sleeper in the C.C. Sabathia derby.
  • Omar Minaya defends the Luis Castillo signing.

Odds and Ends: Crisp, Stewart, Meyer

By Tim Dierkes | February 20, 2008 at 11:28am CDT

Let’s round ’em up!

  • I’m doing a fantasy baseball mailbag feature at The Hardball Times.  Check out the first entry.
  • Nothing really new from Coco Crisp…if he loses the center field battle, he’ll probably prefer a trade.
  • The Brewers are close to a minor league deal with Russell Branyan, who might have a hard time sniffing the big league roster anytime this season.
  • The Toronto Star relays from J.P. Ricciardi that the Blue Jays no longer have an offer on the table for Shannon Stewart.
  • Turns out Oakland’s Dan Meyer has a fourth option, meaning he’s likely to lose the fifth starter battle to Dana Eveland.
  • I can’t help it…I love the Juan Gonzalez story.  I’m rooting for him for no apparent reason.
  • Mark Teixeira didn’t offer much info regarding extension talks with the Braves.  He did refute that report about building a home in Atlanta and another about a rift with Scott Boras.
  • Peter Abraham thinks the Yanks should trade Hideki Matsui.

Odds and Ends: Wells, Piazza, Dunn

By Tim Dierkes | August 7, 2007 at 1:12pm CDT

Here are some miscellaneous happenings around baseball that weren’t worthy of individual posts…

  • The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Padres might release starter David Wells this week.  Boomer earns about $175K per additional start, which needn’t continue the way he’s pitching.  He’s tossed up a lot of seven earned run performances lately.  Wells would probably retire if released, though it would be fun to see him hook on with the Dodgers.
  • The Yankees designated ageless LOOGY Mike Myers for assignment on Monday.  That leaves Ron Villone as the only southpaw currently in the bullpen.  Phenom pitcher Joba Chamberlain might join the team today;  the Yankees hope he’ll be their K-Rod.  But they have to make the playoffs first (Baseball Prospectus puts their playoff odds at 55-65% currently).
  • The Indians signed Russell Branyan to a minor-league contract.  He still might be able to provide some pop off the bench against righties.
  • Yes, Mike Piazza passed through waivers.  But he also has a gentleman’s agreement with Billy Beane about accomodating his wishes if Beane trades him.  And one of those wishes might be to avoid Minnesota.
  • The Reds plan to either exercise Adam Dunn’s option and then trade him in the offseason, or else just not exercise the option.  Dunn might command a Carlos Lee-sized free agent deal.  One added wrinkle: Dunn would gain full no-trade protection until June 15th if the Reds pick up the option.
