Roster Moves: Contreras, Lopez, Detmers, Guerra, Quintana

By Mark Polishuk | October 3, 2021 at 5:13pm CDT

Catching on some of the roster moves that took place before today’s slate of games…

  • The Cubs placed Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list due to right hip inflammation, officially ending the veteran catcher’s season.  In corresponding moves, Alfonso Rivas was moved from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL, and catcher Tyler Payne made his MLB debut today after his contract selected from Triple-A.  One of the few veterans remaining in the wake of the Cubs’ deadline fire sale, Contreras might be either a trade candidate or an extension candidate this winter, depending on the club’s next direction.  Contreras finishes the year hitting .237/.340/.438 with 21 home runs over 483 PA.
  • The Marlins activated Pablo Lopez from the 60-day injured list, as Lopez tossed 1 2/3 innings in an abbreviated start during Miami’s 5-4 win over the Phillies today.  It marked Lopez’s first game since July 11, as a right rotator cuff strain interrupted a very impressive season for the 25-year-old.  Lopez posted a 3.03 ERA and above-average strikeout and walk rates over his first 101 innings, setting himself up for 2022 as yet another quality young arm in the Marlins rotation. To make room for Lopez’s return to the roster, Miami placed left-hander Sean Guenther on the 10-day IL and moved first baseman Jesus Aguilar to the 60-day IL.
  • The Angels called up left-hander Reid Detmers to start today’s contest with the Mariners, and also activated righty Junior Guerra from the 10-day IL.  Outfielder Taylor Ward heads to the 10-day IL with a right adductor strain while southpaw Jhonathan Diaz was optioned to Triple-A.
  • Jose Quintana cleared waivers and outrighted to the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate.  San Francisco designated Quintana for assignment earlier this week, after the veteran left-hander posted a 4.66 ERA over 9 2/3 innings with the Giants.  Quintana was claimed off waivers from the Angels at the end of August, as the Giants looked to add some lefty depth down the stretch.

Marlins Designate Shawn Morimando, Place Zach Pop On 10-Day Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | August 14, 2021 at 3:27pm CDT

The Marlins have designated left-hander Shawn Morimando for assignment and placed righty Zach Pop on the 10-day injured list.  Right-hander Jorge Guzman and left-hander Sean Guenther were called up from Triple-A to take the two spots on the active roster.  (MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola was among those to report the moves.)

Pop has been sidelined with soreness in the middle finger of his throwing hand, interrupting a very respectable rookie season for the 24-year-old.  Over his first 43 1/3 innings in the majors, Pop has a 4.36 ERA/4.05 SIERA, plus a 58.1% grounder rate that has continued his reputation from the minors as a groundball specialist.  The Marlins landed Pop via the Rule 5 Draft (acquiring the right-hander from the Diamondbacks after Arizona drafted him out of the Orioles’ organization), and Pop has certainly pitched well enough to remain on the MLB roster for the entire season, so Miami will retain his rights going forward.

This is the second time the Marlins have DFA’ed Morimando this season, with the first designation resulting in an outright assignment to Triple-A for the southpaw.  After making his big league debut with Cleveland in 2016, Morimando didn’t receive another MLB opportunity until this season, when he posted a 9.58 ERA over 10 1/3 innings for the Marlins.

Marlins Select Sean Guenther, Option Lewin Diaz

By Mark Polishuk | August 1, 2021 at 11:46am CDT

The Marlins have selected the contract of left-hander Sean Guenther from Triple-A Jacksonville.  First baseman Lewin Diaz was optioned to Triple-A in the corresponding move.

The 25-year-old Guenther is now in position to make his Major League debut.  A seventh-round pick out of Notre Dame in the 2017 draft, Guenther isn’t ranked by either Baseball America or MLB Pipeline as one of Miami’s top 30 prospects, but the lefty has earned his promotion with some strong numbers.  Since becoming a full-time relief pitcher in 2019, Guenther has greatly increased his strikeout totals, with a 34% K rate over 40 1/3 combined innings at Double-A and Triple-A ball this season.

2021 marked the first time Guenther had pitched beyond the A-ball level, and while he performed well at Double-A, his 4.76 ERA over 22 2/3 Triple-A frames indicates some growing pains.  Still, much of that damage was done over two calamitous  outings on July 6 and 9, as Guenther allowed nine runs over 1 2/3 total innings.

While Guenther will get his first taste of the majors, Diaz heads back to Triple-A after another brief stint with the Marlins.  Diaz has only a .496 OPS over 73 career plate appearances with Miami, but the 24-year-old has already displayed a lot of power potential down on the farm, albeit without much plate discipline.
