Stephen Strasburg

Odds & Ends: Sano, Kieschnick, Strasburg

By Brian Shephard | May 21, 2009 at 8:31pm CDT

A few links for Thursday night:

  • In a Q&A, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette discusses the Pirates' chances of signing Dominican prospect Miguel Angel Sano, how they might replace Adam LaRoche at 1B if he is traded, and whether they might seek frontline starting pitching via trade.
  • Todd Coppernoll at Brewersfan.net has an interview with former major leaguer Brooks Kieschnick, the first player to hit a home run as a pitcher, a pinch hitter, and as a DH. This is a fascinating account of the rise and fall of a ballplayer. Key quote: "I knew my career was in trouble the minute the Cubs drafted me."
  • Jonathan Mayo at MLB.com makes his predictions for the top 10 picks in June's First-Year Player Draft. Not surprisingly, Stephen Strasburg tops the list.
  • Jim Callis at Baseball America says that Strasburg leaving Wednesday's game with back cramps is not cause for alarm.
  • Callis also offers his predictions for which players will fall in the draft due to signability concerns. He puts OF Donavan Tate, RHP Jacob Turner, and LHP Matthew Purke on the top of the list. Tate and Turner are Scott Boras clients and Purke is advised by Select Sports Group.

Strasburg Unlikely To Skip Minors

By Tim Dierkes | May 19, 2009 at 8:35am CDT

Yahoo's Jeff Passan talked to Nationals acting GM Mike Rizzo, who said that he doesn't see any pitchers in the 2009 draft class jumping straight to the Majors.  Knowing that Rizzo plans to draft Stephen Strasburg, the implication is that the righty won't join Washington's rotation right after signing.  If you've been holding your fantasy league's #1 waiver pick for him, it's time to think about Plan B.  Passan and Chico Harlan of the Washington Post both suggest the most we'd see from Strasburg would be a September cameo as part of a contractual obligation.

Odds & Ends: Mets, Cubs, Astros

By Tim Dierkes | May 18, 2009 at 11:16am CDT

Links for Monday…

  • Nationals GM Mike Rizzo told Baseball America's Jim Callis that the team's #10 overall draft pick will not be influenced by signability.  MLB.com's Bill Ladson's source believes negotiations between Rizzo and Scott Boras for Stephen Strasburg will go well, given their past history.
  • Regarding Friday's call for MLBTR writers, I still have many applications to review.  I will keep you updated here on the site.
  • McCovey Chronicles discusses The Jonathan Sanchez Paradox.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post names Nick Johnson, Aubrey Huff, and Mark DeRosa as the most probable trade targets for the Mets if Carlos Delgado is out for an extended period of time.  Check out MLBTR's discussion of this topic from Saturday.  SI.com's Jon Heyman also weighed in today.
  • Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal has an update on progress made on the sale of the Cubs.
  • On Sunday, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote that Freddy Sanchez's current contract clause will likely cause the Pirates to avoid vesting options in the future.
  • On June 1st, Alyson Footer will begin a new job working for the Astros.  The new MLB.com beat writer will be Brian McTaggart, who covered the team for the Houston Chronicle.

Odds & Ends: Bonds, Armas, Strasburg

By Tim Dierkes | May 13, 2009 at 12:44pm CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • MLB.com's Joe Frisaro says the Royals received righty Eric Basurto as the player to be named later in the Ross Gload trade.
  • Tom Glavine hopes to pitch in the Majors this month, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman.
  • Back on May 3rd, Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times wrote about the possibility of Barry Bonds signing with the independent league Long Beach Armada (the team already employs Hideki Irabu and Jose Lima).  But Bonds' agent Jeff Borris said, "He's not going to do that."
  • It appears that Tony Armas Jr. signed a minor league deal with the Braves after the Mets released him.
  • Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News says Padres beat writer Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune will be out of a job come August.  Sorry to hear it; Krasovic does excellent work.
  • MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo talked to Tony Gwynn about Stephen Strasburg.
  • Johnny Damon talked about his future again, this time with MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.
  • Jim Thome would like to return to the White Sox next year, based on his comments to MLB.com's Scott Merkin.

Heyman On Rockies, Wedge, Strasburg

By Tim Dierkes | May 11, 2009 at 10:11am CDT

The latest from SI.com's Jon Heyman…

  • Heyman says Rockies manager Clint Hurdle "appears to be on the firing line" after the team's 12-18 start.  GM Dan O'Dowd called the speculation "unfair at this time," talking to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post.  O'Dowd's job seems safe and he could direct a "July tradeoff."  Heyman speculates on Garrett Atkins and Huston Street as candidates.  Heyman doesn't mention them, but Brad Hawpe and Jason Marquis seem like other possibilities.
  • Indians manager Eric Wedge, on the other hand, does not appear likely to be fired.
  • Heyman says Stephen Strasburg is still expected to aim for $50MM after the Nationals select him first overall in June.

Nats GM Confirms Plans To Draft Strasburg

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 9, 2009 at 3:03pm CDT

3:03pm: According to AOL Fanhouse's Ed Price, Rizzo was actually in attendance for Strasburg's no-no.  The love fest has begun.

11:56am: Stephen Strasburg threw a no hitter last night, as MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reports. The San Diego State righty struck out 17 along the way, walking two. This just cements what we already knew: Strasburg is the country's amateur player.

Chico Harlan of the Washington Post heard this from acting Nationals GM Mike Rizzo about Strasburg:

"If the draft was today, he'd be our guy. But the draft is a month from now, so a lot of things can happen. Guys can turn up their intensity and their performance, a lot of things can happen in a month. But if it was today, he'd be our guy."

MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports that Rizzo met with Strasburg's agent, Scott Boras, earlier in the week. The Nationals have the first overall pick in the draft and are expected to select Strasburg. Rizzo told Boras he planned to scout Strasburg's Friday night start, but they didn't discuss Strasburg in detail or talk about a contract for the pitcher.

Odds And Ends: Hinch, Manny, Longoria

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 8, 2009 at 9:24am CDT

Links for Friday…

  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports believes the D'Backs' new manager, A.J. Hinch, is a "strange choice" because he has no managerial or coaching experience.
  • Newsday's Ken Davidoff says signing Manny Ramirez was the best move the Mets never made.
  • MLB.com's Doug Miller and Ken Gurnick sift through a year's worth of Ramirez-related drama.
  • Tim Sullivan of the San Diego Union-Tribune wonders if the Dodgers will have enough payroll flexibility to take on Jake Peavy's contract, now that Manny has been suspended without pay.
  • Kirk Kenney of the Union-Tribune asks where Stephen Strasburg belongs in college baseball history.
  • Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle has a plan to fix the Astros. He'd like to see them trade veterans like Jose Valverde and Carlos Lee and try to win with youth, even if it means losing first.
  • Tyler Kepner of the New York Times says the contrast between what the Yankees owe Alex Rodriguez and what the Rays owe Evan Longoria illustrates the difference between the AL East rivals.
  • Buster Olney profiled Longoria for ESPN the Magazine.
  • More sad news for baseball: Dom Dimaggio died this morning, as MLB.com's Bobbie Dittmeier reports.

Draft Update: Strasburg, Scheppers, Paxton

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 7, 2009 at 3:45pm CDT

ESPN.com's Jason A. Churchill has an update on some top amateur players as June 9th draws closer:

  • He confirms what we heard last week: Barring the unforseen, the Nats will select Stephen Strasburg with the first overall pick.
  • Scouts expect Tanner Scheppers, who was drafted but never signed by the Pirates last year, to be selected within the first 15 picks. They're divided on whether the righty, who is pitching in an independent league, can crack the top ten.
  • Scott Boras added a new client, Kentucky lefty James Paxton, according to one of Churcill's sources.

Odds And Ends: Draft, Stark, Selig

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 6, 2009 at 8:53pm CDT

Links for Wednesday night…

  • ESPN.com's Rob Neyer argues that the Nats shouldn't take Stephen Strasburg unless they're sure he'll help their team more than any other player, regardless of the hype surrounding the college righty.
  • Neyer also weighs in on the possibility of Bill James appearing as a cartoon in the upcoming Moneyball movie.
  • Speaking on ESPN radio, Jayson Stark says the Dodgers should win the NL West by 15 or 20 games.
  • He says they're a starter and a bullpen arm away from becoming much stronger and adds that they have the pieces to deal for the pitching they need.
  • Jenny Vrentas of the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports that Bud Selig says teams are making the necessary adjustments to cope with the struggling economy. Selig was speaking with the commissioners for the NBA, the NFL and the NHL.
  • MLB.com's Ken Gurnick writes that the Dodgers are thrilled to have added Orlando Hudson.
  • MLB.com's Bill Chastain spoke with Carl Crawford about the 100-steal plateau and heard that the speedy left fielder doesn't expect his stolen base tally to reach triple digits. Crawford, who has 20 steals, will likely become a free agent after 2010. How much could he command as baseball's first 100-steal man since Vince Coleman in 1987?

Odds & Ends: Qualls, Scheppers, Strasburg

By Tim Dierkes | May 6, 2009 at 12:28pm CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • D'Backs closer Chad Qualls has MLBTR bookmarked…nice!
  • In yesterday's post on Miguel Angel Sano, I linked to a three-minute video.  It turns out that clip was a snippet of a documentary called Live to Play, Play to Live.  A production company is following five players, including Sano, leading up to the July 2nd signing period.
  • Baseball America's J.J. Cooper writes about the independent league season debuts of Tanner Scheppers and Aaron Crow.  Scheppers is with the St. Paul Saints, who also employ Craig Brazell and Kerry Ligtenberg.
  • Keith Law discusses Stephen Strasburg in this ESPN video.  Law predicts Strasburg will sign for $18-20MM.  Strasburg's coach Tony Gwynn advises caution for the Nationals if they draft him, in talking to Edward Lewis of the Daily Aztec.
  • Former Yankees Dominican scouting director Ramon Valdivia filed a $3MM wrongful termination suit against the team, according to ESPN's Jorge Arangure Jr.
  • SI's Jon Heyman looks back at the incredible 2005 draft class.
