By Tim Dierkes | May 4, 2009 at 3:33pm CDT

Heyman On Strasburg, Pedro, Byrd

By Tim Dierkes | May 4, 2009 at 1:03pm CDT

Let's take a look at the latest from SI.com's Jon Heyman.

  • Heyman's on Twitter!
  • Heyman runs through the surprise contenders and decides which teams are the real deal.
  • The Nationals, as you know, have decided to draft Stephen Strasburg.
  • Heyman learned from Yankees GM Brian Cashman that "the Yankees can't seriously consider Pedro Martinez or Paul Byrd until they're pitching somewhere."  Heyman talked to another GM who estimated each player would need a month to get ready.  Byrd told Yahoo's Tim Brown he needs just two weeks in the minors.

Olney On Strasburg

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 2, 2009 at 11:12am CDT

ESPN.com's Buster Olney heard that the Nationals "fully intend to draft and sign" Stephen Strasburg. Former Nats GM Jim Bowden made similar comments earlier in the week. Some rival talent evaluators expect the Nationals would shut Strasburg down if they can't sign him early. He has pitched 78.1 innings so far this year and no team would want to risk overusing an arm that valuable.

Strasburg is 10-0 with 147 strikeouts and 15 walks on the season and, as Laurence Miedema of the San Jose Mercury News reports, he hit 100 mph in his start last night.

Heyman On Nationals, Lee, A-Rod

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 1, 2009 at 2:23pm CDT

SI.com's Jon Heyman has a new column up; here are some highlights:

  • Heyman spoke with a Nats person who described college pitcher Stephen Strasburg's curve as a "legit hammer." The Nats will have the chance to draft him with their first overall pick this June.
  • The Nats could have a solid young rotation soon if they add Strasburg to go along with Shairon Martis and Jordan Zimmermann, both 22. John Lannan and Scott Olsen are only 24 and 25, respectively.
  • There has been contact between the Nats and Pedro Martinez, though Heyman writes that Pedro makes more sense for a team trying to win now.
  • Speculation that Cliff Lee could be dealt is "not crazy at all," especially considering that last year's C.C. Sabathia deal worked well for both the Indians and Brewers.
  • Heyman also weighs in on the latest Alex Rodriguez controversy.

By Tim Dierkes | April 30, 2009 at 9:00am CDT

Links for Thursday…

  • MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo and ESPN's Jason Churchill say high school catcher Luke Bailey is having Tommy John surgery.  He might fall out of the top 20 in the draft, says Churchill.

  • ESPN's Jim Caple talked to pitcher Jeff Zimmerman, who is on the comeback trail with the Mariners.
  • Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune notes that White Sox outfielder Jerry Owens may be on the way out.  It sounds like Scott Podsednik is coming up, but there will be no roster move today.

  • Zach Berman of the Washington Post gathered quotes on new Nationals pitcher Logan Kensing.

Odds & Ends: Nationals, Garcia, Bonds

By Tim Dierkes | April 29, 2009 at 9:03am CDT

  • Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com grilled various Nationals about the possibility of the team signing Stephen Strasburg for big bucks.

  • Yahoo's Gordon Edes chatted with Evan Longoria as part of his article about David Price and Matt Wieters starting the season in Triple A.
  • White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen commented about free agent Freddy Garcia, talking to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times.
  • Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star thinks the Royals should sign Barry Bonds, and current team members seem receptive to the idea.  In separate columns, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle and Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News try to figure out why Bonds hasn't retired.

Odds And Ends: Sanchez, Strasburg, Big Unit

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 25, 2009 at 12:51pm CDT

Links for Saturday…

  • Baseball America's John Manuel reports that 22-year-old Twins first base prospect Henry Sanchez has been suspended 50 games for violating minor league baseball's drug policy. Sanchez was the 39th overall pick in the 2005 draft.
  • John Maffei of the North County Times reports on Stephen Strasburg's latest start, one in which the top prospect struck out 14, though he did allow a home run (hat tip to Buster Olney). His strikeout to walk ratio now exceeds 10-1.
  • Ever wonder how much Japanese teams spend on their players? Ryo Shinkawa of NPB Tracker has the figures and their payrolls range from $18-45MM this year.
  • ESPN.com's Gene Wojciechowski reviewed some old scouting reports on Randy Johnson with the Big Unit himself.
  • And there are more injuries piling up: Chien-Ming Wang and Cody Ransom for the Yankees and Brian McCann and Garret Anderson for the Braves.

Odds And Ends: Alvarez, DePodesta, Strasburg

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 4, 2009 at 9:47am CDT

A few links for Saturday…

  • Chuck Finder of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette heard from a talent evaluator who says Pedro Alvarez is the most talented Pirates prospect since Barry Bonds.
  • Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe looks at some of Chris Carter's quirks.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press believes the Tigers need a top-notch closer.
  • According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune Padres executive Paul DePodesta now reports to GM Kevin Towers, not CEO Sandy Alderson.
  • ESPN.com's Buster Olney expects Gary Sheffield to help the Mets.
  • MLB.com's Lisa Winston notes that only eight of the 21 Rule 5 draftees are still with their new teams.
  • MLB.com's Jennifer Langosch has some minor Pirates transactions.
  • And Stephen Strasburg improved to 6-0 last night with six strikeouts in as many innings. The prospect is averaging almost two punchouts per inning, so this is nothing for him.
  • Kevin Baxter of the LA Times reports that Torii Hunter thought Strasburg looked sharp.

Heyman On Strasburg, Lackey, Pedro

By Tim Dierkes | March 30, 2009 at 12:32pm CDT

SI.com's Jon Heyman has a new column up.

  • In talking to club execs who have spoken with Scott Boras about Stephen Strasburg, Heyman believes Boras does have $50MM in mind.  Boras allegedly likened Strasburg to fictional pitcher Sidd Finch, with the plan being to shatter previous draft pick bonuses by using Daisuke Matsuzaka's contract as a model.  One Nationals person told Heyman, "We'll pay the $10 million, and we'll get him signed."  This much is clear: we'll have something off the field to talk about in August.   For more Strasburg Mania, check out this article by Steve Henson at Yahoo.
  • Heyman learned from Nationals sources that Stan Kasten and team ownership, not Jim Bowden, cut off the Aaron Crow negotiations at $3.3MM.  Kasten's had many applicants for Bowden's GM job, but Heyman's sources expect Mike Rizzo to retain the gig.
  • A Heyman source estimated that the Angels offered John Lackey four years and around $50MM.  Talks are on hold given Lackey's elbow injury.  He didn't want to negotiate during the season anyway.  The latest report on Lackey's injury is pretty good.
  • Pedro Martinez still wants $5MM, and is "willing to wait well into the season."  Heyman believes the Dodgers, Indians, Pirates, Astros, and Mets are possibilities now.
