Blue Jays Designate Todd Redmond For Assignment

By Mark Polishuk | April 16, 2015 at 1:45pm CDT

The Blue Jays have designated right-hander Todd Redmond for assignment, as per a team press release.  Infielder Ryan Goins has been recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Redmond had gotten off to a rough start in 2015, posting a 16.62 ERA in 4 1/3 innings of work, allowing five walks to four strikeouts in that brief stretch.  Originally claimed off waivers from the Orioles in March 2013, Redmond posted league-average numbers for Toronto as a fill-in starter in 2013 and then was a solid relief arm (3.24 ERA, 7.2 K/9, 2.22 K/BB rate) over 75 innings for the Jays last season.  He held right-handed batters to a .242/.287/.360 slash line last year, though lefty batters had a much heftier .834 OPS against Redmond.

As per the MLB Trade Rumors DFA Tracker, Redmond is one of three players currently in ’limbo,’ along with the Nationals’ Xavier Cedeno and the Yankees’ Matt Tracy.

Blue Jays Claim Todd Redmond

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 22, 2013 at 12:58pm CDT

The Blue Jays claimed Todd Redmond off of waivers from the Orioles, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports (on Twitter). The Blue Jays confirmed the move, adding that they optioned Redmond to Triple-A Buffalo. Toronto placed Drew Hutchison on the 60-day disabled list to create roster space for Redmond.

The Orioles had claimed the right-hander off of waivers from the Reds last month. The 27-year-old made his MLB debut in 2012, starting one game at the big league level. He spent most of the season at Triple-A, where he posted a 3.63 ERA with 8.2 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 148 2/3 innings. The Reds acquired him from the Braves for Paul Janish last July.

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 8, 2013 at 12:13pm CDT

The Orioles claimed Todd Redmond off of waivers from the Reds, Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN reports (on Twitter). The Reds designated Redmond for assignment one week ago to create roster space for Manny Parra.

Redmond made his MLB debut in 2012, starting one game at the big league level. The 27-year-old spent most of the season at Triple-A, where he posted a 3.63 ERA with 8.2 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 148 2/3 innings. The Reds acquired him from the Braves for Paul Janish last July.

Reds Sign Parra, Designate Redmond

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 1, 2013 at 4:34pm CDT

4:34pm: Parra obtained a Major League deal with a base salary of $1MM, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter). Parra can earn another $400K in appearance bonuses.

4:06pm: The Reds announced that they signed left-hander Manny Parra to a one-year contract (Twitter link). The club designated right-hander Todd Redmond for assignment in a corresponding move.

Parra appeared in 62 games for the Brewers in 2012, posting a 5.06 ERA with 9.4 K/9 and 5.4 BB/9 in 58 2/3 innings of relief work. The Brewers non-tendered the 30-year-old earlier in the offseason instead of paying him a projected $1.6MM salary. Parra, a CAA Sports client, also drew interest from the Cardinals, Pirates and Mets this winter. He joins a Reds bullpen that includes left-hander Sean Marshall.

Reds Sign Todd Redmond

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 26, 2012 at 9:28am CDT

The Reds re-signed right-hander Todd Redmond to a one-year, Major League contract worth $490K, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. Acquired from the Braves midseason, Redmond was the lone pitcher outside of Cincinnati's starting five to start a game in 2012.

Redmond has only appeared in one game at the MLB level. The 27-year-old started the second game of an August doubleheader, allowing four earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. He spent most of this past season at Triple-A, where he posted a 3.63 ERA with 8.2 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 148 2/3 innings for the top affiliates of the Braves and Reds.

Braves Acquire Paul Janish

By Zachary Links | July 14, 2012 at 3:58pm CDT

The Braves have acquired shortstop Paul Janish from the Reds in exchange for right-hander Todd Redmond, tweets Mark Bowman of MLB.com.  Atlanta has confirmed the deal in a press release.

Janish, 29, has spent 2012 with Triple-A Louisville after playing 114 games for the Reds last season.  The shortstop has never been much of a hitter but boasts a very strong glove.  Janish owns a .221/.289/.302 slash line in 324 career games and could offer support at shortstop in the absence of Andrelton Simmons.

Redmond, 27, has never appeared in a big league game.  The right-hander has been with Triple-A Gwinnett since 2009 and has a 3.78 ERA with 7.5 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 97 starts.

Pirates Acquire Tyler Yates From Braves

By Tim Dierkes | March 26, 2008 at 10:24am CDT

10:23am: Byung-Hyun Kim’s gone, in the accompanying move.  So is Jaret Wright, according to RotoWorld.

8:40am: Dave O’Brien was right – the Braves chose Tyler Yates as the out of options reliever to deal.  They sent him to the Pirates today for a minor league hurler named Todd Redmond.  On Monday, O’Brien said he expected the Braves to trade one of Scott Thorman or Brayan Pena as well.

Yates, a 30 year-old Hawaiin, has a solid 8.3 per nine innings strikeout rate in his 162 inning career.  He needs to work on his control though. Yates was drafted by the A’s and dealt to the Mets in the Dave Justice deal.  Baseball America says he began ’04 as the Mets’ fifth starter but was shortly converted to relief.  He missed the ’05 season with rotator cuff surgery.  His acquisition may push Jaret Wright or Byung-Hyun Kim out of Pittsburgh.

Redmond, 23 in May, was ranked as the Pirates’ #27 prospect by Baseball America.  They note his "outstanding control" but lack of dominant stuff.  BA believes he profiles as a middle reliever in the long term.
