Signings Galore

By Tim Dierkes | January 18, 2008 at 7:27am CDT

Tons of one-year agreements were reached recently, which was to be expected.  These are all players under team control rather than free agents, so we knew they weren’t signing elsewhere.  The options are to sign a one-year deal, sign a multiyear deal, or go to a hearing if no agreement can be reached.

  • Justin Morneau, Jason Kubel, Brad Lidge, Mark Teixeira, Joe Crede, Juan Rivera, Huston Street, and others reached agreements recently.
  • The Jays gave Scott Downs a three-year, $10MM deal.  The deal buys out two years of free agency, which makes it a little more palatable than when I thought it was buying out one.
  • Scott Kazmir may have to throw down with the Rays.

Glaus Asked For Trade

By Tim Dierkes | January 15, 2008 at 9:39am CDT

According to Buster Olney, Troy Glaus told J.P. Ricciardi several months ago that he’d like to be traded.  Apparently he really wanted to get away from artificial turf.

Olney says Ricciardi made no promises, and set about finding good value for Glaus.  Glaus had wanted to play for St. Louis for years, and Scott Rolen’s rift with Tony La Russa created an opportunity.

Rolen For Glaus Finalized

By Tim Dierkes | January 14, 2008 at 5:44pm CDT

UPDATE, 1-14-08 at 5:44pm: And it’s official, news conference Wednesday.

UPDATE, 1-14-08 at 2:15pm: Both players passed their physicals, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  This could be officially a done deal later today.  By the way, the Belleville News-Democrat discusses some of the failed Rolen scenarios here (including one that involved Jhonny Peralta, Cliff Lee, and Anthony Reyes).

UPDATE, 1-14-08 at 10:57am: A small amount of money will change hands – the Jays will send $1.8MM to the Cards, pending commissioner approval.  Given that Rolen has more money on his contract, it’s surprising to see the Jays sending money.

UPDATE, 1-13-08 at 12:12pm: ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick says the agreement has been reached; the deal will be done if both third basemen pass physicals on Monday.  The Cardinals required that Glaus exercise his $11.25MM player option for ’09 as part of the trade – they didn’t want him to have a big ’08 and then opt for free agency.  No money changed hands, which makes the deal look like a win for St. Louis.

FROM 1-12-08 at 11:00am:

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Blue Jays and Cardinals are "closing in" on a trade of Troy Glaus for Scott Rolen.  Both would have to pass physicals first.  Rosenthal adds that both players agreed to waive their no-trade clauses and the Cardinals might need to cough up some cash as well.

Glaus, 31, hit .262/.366/.473 in an abbreviated 2007 season.  He had nerve decompression surgery for his foot in September, which will hopefully relieve his plantar fasciitis.  Also that month, Sports Illustrated reported that Glaus received multiple shipments of steroids as a member of the Angels.  Glaus is set to earn $12.75MM in ’08 and $11.25MM in ’09.

Rolen, who will turn 33 in April, hit .265/.331/.398 in a similarly abbreviated season.  He also had September surgery, a shoulder cleaning that involved removing scar tissue.  Rolen also had shoulder surgery in ’05, but did show good power for the first five months of ’06.  His other wart is a strained relationship with Tony La Russa.  He’ll earn $12MM in ’08, ’09, and ’10.

It’s hard to say which team won the swap, though I lean towards the Cardinals.  They get a younger player with a less serious health issue and a shorter commitment.  The reason I think it’s close is that Rolen is a superior defender.  Can you imagine hitting a groundball to the left side when Rolen and John McDonald are both on the field?

Jays Re-Sign Reed Johnson

By Tim Dierkes | January 2, 2008 at 1:29pm CDT

Today, the Jays inked arbitration-eligible left fielder Reed Johnson to a one-year, $3.27MM deal.  I had considered Johnson a non-tender candidate a couple of weeks ago after he posted a .625 OPS in an injury-shortened 2007.  He was much better in ’06, posting a career-best .869 OPS as the team’s leadoff hitter.

The Jays have six outfielders on their 40-man roster: Buck Coats, Johnson, Adam Lind, Alex Rios, Matt Stairs, and Vernon Wells.  Since Frank Thomas can only DH, Johnson, Stairs, and Lind will all have to battle for playing time in left field.  Lind could be the odd man out.  The 24 year-old might yet become an above average hitter, even for a left fielder.

Tigers, Jays Interested In Miguel Olivo

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2007 at 12:57pm CDT

UPDATE, 12-15-07 at 12:51pm: The Jays have their eye on Olivo as well.  He would get more playing time in Toronto than Detroit.

FROM 12-14-07 at 3:06pm:

Hot stove action!  It was revealed today that the Tigers recently contacted Miguel Olivo’s agent to express interest.  Olivo’s agent has also heard from four or five other teams.  Olivo would have to serve as Ivan Rodriguez’s caddy if he signed with Detroit.

A starting gig for Olivo might be hard to come by.  He earned $2MM in ’07 and figures to make a touch more in ’08.  He gunned down an impressive 32.9% of baserunners this year.

Jays Sign David Eckstein

By Tim Dierkes | December 13, 2007 at 10:57am CDT

UPDATE, 12-13-07 at 10:56am: Rosenthal says it’s a one-year, $4.5MM deal.  Who can complain about that?

FROM 12-13-07 at 8:30am:

This one’s from out in left field – Ken Rosenthal reports that the Blue Jays are close to signing David Eckstein.  Rosenthal expects the signing to push newly inked defensive specialist John McDonald to a backup role.

Perhaps the Jays can go for some kind of offense/defense platoon.  If a groundballer like Jesse Litsch or Jeremy Accardo happens to be on the mound, the Jays could opt for defense.

Today’s Non-tenders: Towers, Prior, Everett, Durbin

By Tim Dierkes | December 12, 2007 at 11:48pm CDT

Tim’s out for the night, so we’ve got a fresh post started for the non-tenders.  MLB.com has a running list as well.

These guys are the officials as of now:

  • As expected, the Marlins non-tendered catcher Miguel Olivo.  Johnny Estrada was another casualty; these two make up the market for starting catchers.
  • The Blue Jays non-tendered Josh Towers, a surprising move.  Some NL team could offer him two years and get league average work out of him.
  • Mark Prior has been non-tendered.  Honestly if I were the Cubs, I would’ve tossed the $3.5MM his way just to see.
  • Aaron Miles is now a free agent.
  • The A’s cut Kiko Calero loose.
  • The Padres have non-tendered four: Morgan Ensberg, Jason Lane, and pitchers Jack Cassell and Ryan Ketchner. RotoWorld speculates that the latter two, not arbitration eligible, could be offered minor league deals.
  • The Royals cut the cord on Emil Brown.  He turns 33 soon; he hit an ugly .257/.300/.347 in 2007.  Brown earned $3.45MM in ’07.
  • The Tigers non-tendered Chad Durbin, toss him into the free agent pool.  Guess those trade talks with the Bucs didn’t work out.
  • The Twins have let go Jason Tyner.
  • The Nats have cut bait with Nook Logan and LHP Michael O’Connor.
  • The Dodgers wave goodbye to Mark Hendrickson.
  • The White Sox have non-tendered Andy Gonzalez and LHP Heath Phillips. Joe Crede sticks with the Pale Hose for now.
  • Adam Everett has lost his job with the Astros. It’d be kind of funny if the Orioles signed him.
  • Per RotoWorld, the Angels have non-tendered Dallas McPherson. He’s full of potential, but he’s never come through. He’s only 27, though, so he could still catch on somewhere. Unless, RotoWorld notes, he has an agreement in place with the Angels.
  • The Braves have non-tendered Willie Harris, though he had already been DFA’d.

–Joe and Tim

Sabean Takes Lincecum/Cain Off The Table

By Tim Dierkes | December 12, 2007 at 4:34pm CDT

The Aaron Rowand signing has led Brian Sabean to pull his young starters off the market (to the extent that they were ever available).  Specifically, the idea of an Alex Rios for Tim Lincecum swap is dead.

The Giants are still looking for help at the infield corners and in the ’pen.  It’s hard to figure out what Sabean is doing – is he trying to win in 2008?

Giants Interested In Rowand, Fukudome

By Tim Dierkes | December 11, 2007 at 1:13pm CDT

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News has a few new tidbits concerning the Giants.

  • They’re considering a late push for Kosuke Fukudome.  Baggarly notes that Fukudome is expected to get at least 4/44.  I think Fukudome makes a bit of sense for the Giants; he could be a draw.
  • Baggarly says the Giants are in more heavily on Aaron Rowand.  This makes less sense to me, as Rowand probably isn’t going to put butts in the seats.  He is, however, going to require four or five years at $12-14MM per.  Indeed, Buster Olney heard the Giants could be the one team willing to give Rowand five years.  It would be a contract the Giants might regret.  They’re not expected to be in contention until at least 2010.
  • Nothing new on the Tim Lincecum for Alex Rios front.  The general vibe, though, is that Brian Sabean will pass.

White Sox Like Alex Rios

By Tim Dierkes | December 10, 2007 at 1:50pm CDT

What team wouldn’t like to have Alex Rios?  Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times notes the White Sox’ interest, but admits that the Sox don’t really have what the Jays would want in return.

Not that the White Sox can spare pitching at all, but Javier Vazquez would be quite valuable as a trade chip.  He earns a reasonable $34.5MM over the next three seasons, and he’s always healthy.  Rios has another three years under team control also, though he’ll be significantly cheaper.  If the Sox hadn’t traded Jon Garland, you could almost see this as a slight possibility.

Then again, if J.P. Ricciardi can get Tim Lincecum for Rios, more power to him.
