« Red Sox Rumors: Sabathia, Youkilis, Tazawa | Main | Cashman Met With Teixeira »
According to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch, the White Sox signed former Pirates first-round pick John Van Benschoten to a minor league deal. JvB posted a 3.92 ERA in 80.1 Triple A innings this year, with less-than-exciting peripheral stats. His Major League trials have not gone well.
Van Benschoten had surgery to repair a labrum tear and remove a cyst in his pitching shoulder in January of '05, and the shoulder continued to bother him the following year.

Seems like a nice low risk, high reward type of signing. If at nothing else, provides a little depth at the AAA level incase one of the youngsters don't pan out

I was wondering how Kenny was planning to replace Javy's 200+ innings next year.
Yes, I'm kidding.....

You got me with that one I was about to say...

This guy hasn't done enough to deserve being referred to as "JVB". Let's save that for the CP3's and FWP's of the world.

I'm trying to figure out who FWP is...
Anyways, I'm surprised he signed with an AL team. I would have thought he'd try to sign with an NL team so his bat can also come in play. Most scouts believe, when he was drafted, that he had a better bat than pitching arm.

If I remember correctly, most teams like this guy better as a hitter (led NCAA in homers). Any chance that the Sox will give him a shot as a hitter?

John Van Benzenheimen. Put'em on the board. Championship.

i like it. Low risk. Don Coopers can often bring high reward with pitchers.

How fast is he? Maybe KW signed him as a CF?
We've stocked up on infielders, now we need to stock up some pitching.

FWP= Fast Willie Parker?
The White Sox deserve the lifetime achievement award if they can turn this guy around.

It's gonna be interesting to see how the Charlotte rotation shapes up.

Fast Willie Parker is going to play for the White Sox?

I was referring to the guy who didn't know what FWP stood for. lol.
Posted by: bigpat | December 05, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Every picture online of this guy has him either whiping the sweat off his brow (probably after giving up a homerun), or him sitting on the bench with his head in his hands. Cannot wait for him to pitch Hitter's Friendly US Cellular haha.

I couldve sworn Willie Parker plays football.
As for the signing, it really can't hurt. Maybe he turns into a decent 4/5 starter or reliever. Cooper has done some pretty great things (Danks, Floyd, Jenks, Contreras, Loaiza, Garland) so we know that this guy will get a shot.

Hopefully Coop can work his magic on him...because if there is any thought of letting him hit, Greg Walker will surely destroy any hopes of that working out.

I love it......its worth a shot and IN KENNY I TRUST!!!!!

Danks was a good pitching prospect before he got to the Sox. Floyd was a fluke and I wouldn't expect him to do as good as he did last year. Garland was nothing more than average or slightly better his entire career.
Jenks and Contreras I would give him credit for, along with Thornton. He still might be able to fix MacDougal.
Loaiza was a fluke.

Pretty hilarious comments on how he pitches.
Of course they White Sox signed him as a hitter though. He wont be pitching.

I would love to see the white sox sign derek lowe. I think the rotation, with vazquez gone, could really use someone like lowe to eat up (quality) innings. he hasn't missed a start in what, 7 years? but I haven't heard anything about that - is that contrary to their whole seemingly salary-dumping philosophy? he would fit in so well!!!
Posted by: kswissreject | December 05, 2008 at 01:15 PM
Loiaza may have been a fluke, but Coop helped him in that 21 win season. Which in turn helped him get traded for Contreras. I don't think Floyd is a fluke, not sure if he'll be as good as last year, but he will be good. Garland wasn't all that good before Coop got ahold of him. With Coop helping, he got better than he was.

If you thought Floyd did good.. Oh baby if Danks had the luck/run support Floyd got..... Danks might have easily been Cy Young last year.
