« Nationals Looking At Defensive Shortstops | Main | Pirates Could Trade Doumit »
The Texas Rangers' search for a right-handed bat has them looking at Vladimir Guerrero, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.
A source "with knowledge of [Guerrero's] thinking" says that the two-year, $19MM contract that Bobby Abreu signed with the Angels might raise Guerrero's expectations for a deal this winter. The FOX report, however, speculates that Vladdy may ultimately just earn a one-year deal, perhaps for $3-5MM plus incentives, which Texas should be able to afford.
The 34-year-old and the Rangers appear to be a good match, considering Texas' need for right-handed power and Vlad's career numbers at Rangers Ballpark (.394/.471/.705). In our Rangers offseason outlook earlier today, Guerrero's name came up as a potential target for the team.

Another OF/DH for the Rangers
Posted by: Yankeeboy11 | November 12, 2009 at 09:50 PM
I'm still not quite sure why the Mariners don't look into Vladdy... say what you want about right handed power-hitters at Safeco, but he KILLS the Mariners like few others ever have.
Can someone explain why I haven't heard the two of them connected at all thus far this offseason?

Probably because of Griffey, they both can't play the field and it would be difficult to split at bats between basically 2 DH type only players.

My guess would be that he's seen only as a DH at this point and that role appears to be Griffey's again. Guerrero won't platoon, especially at his salary.

If you can't beam him, sign him?
3-5 million could easily be a bargain.

Vlad's career line against the Rangers:
.396/.461/.666
More damning of the Rangers pitching staff than his prowess at the Ballpark at Arlington

Wow!!! I am done for the night.

Yeah and his numbers at the Big A against the Rangers crappy pitching is very similar weird huh maybe it has something to do with the Rangers not being able to pitch?

There is no way the Halos would let him go for $5M for a one year salary..that is truly a huge bargain and I'm sure they would match the Ranger's offer to stay in Anaheim

1 year 3-5 mill? any team should take a gamble on that.. vlad will minimum produce 5 mill playing 90 to 100 games even playing the outfield with an NL team...there is no way that is the offer being shopped..he is a minimum 7/8 mill/DH..maybe 5/year if a team is signing him as a starting OF...vlad will not be taking a deal for 3 million though.

My grandma can hit 40 homers out of Arlington!
If Vladdy goes there, look for a bit of a revival in his power numbers, even if he only plays 100 games again.
He would have easily topped 25 this season in Texas, likely would have topped over 30 last season, and most definitely could have launched 40+ each season from 2004 through 2007.
Imagine his numbers had he played his entire career in Arlington.
Angels are going to keep him now. I think this could be a rude awakening for Angels fans out there who are openly/disgracefully unappreciative of Vladdy's efforts during his tenure in Anaheim.

If that's all it's going to take to sign Vlad, then the Marlins should take a look. Sign him, trade Uggla for 2 or 3 prospects (preferrably a top catching prospect and maybe a mid-level pitcher or two. Something like the Twins Wilson Ramos), and move Coghlan to 2nd.
1- Coghlan, 2B
2- Cameron Maybin, CF
3- Hanley Ramirez, SS
4- Jorge Cantu, 1B
5- Vlad Guerrero, LF
6- Cody Ross, RF
7- Gaby Sanchez, 3B
8- John Baker, C
Vlad should have something left in the tank, and he could really help Maybin alot.

bah. xxryan beat me to it. I was gonna say that I could do .267/.312/.344 in Arlington, but whatever.

Rangers cant afford a bag of chips none the less Big Vlad. That inflated batting line is due to Rangers horrible pitching in years past.

Hey JPizzle!
Marlins trade Uggla for Edwin Jackson then sign Vladdy and P.Feliz.
1.Coghlan 2B
2.Maybin CF
3.Hanley SS
4.Vladdy RF
5.Cantu 1B
6.Ross LF
7.Pedro Feliz 3B
8.Baker C
9.Edwin Jackson P
I'm just an observant Cardinals fan what do I know?

"My grandma can hit 40 homers out of Arlington!"
Then your grandmother must be better than Tex, the last Ranger to hit 40+ hrs and only 30 were hit in Arlington.

I really appreciate all that Vlad has done for the club. More than any other player he has transformed the Angels into a perennial winner. The guy is an absolute monster of a player and all around great guy.
However, this off-season we are paying people for future performance. Vlad has been well paid for what he did for the team. The Angels don't "owe" him anything. Misguided appreciation will lead to a very bad baseball decision.
If Vlad is healthy then sure he can still be a dominant player. I'm convinced though that he will never be healthy. That he will continue to be a little slower and a little more injury prone as the years go by.
Just look at his last 3 years:
2007 - 950 OPS (right in line with his career avg)
2008 - 886 OPS
2009 - 794 OPS
He absolutely cannot take the field again. His strong arm (though erratic) cannot make up for his poor glove work and limited mobility. He is a liability on the basepaths. Besides being slow the guy has bad instincts. I can't count how many times he has ran through stop signs. You can only count on him being a DH and even then you probably shouldn't bet on more than 120 games.
I'd be happy if the Angels retained him at $3-4m. I think that is a great price for a great guy. However, if the bidding reaches $8-9m then it will be severely overpaying. Considering the market for DH's (Matsui, Delgado, Thome, Dye, Branyan) or LF'ers - moving Abreu to DH - (Holliday, Bay), there is no reason to do something irrational with Vlad.

"Marlins trade Uggla for Edwin Jackson and then sign Vlady and Pedro Feliz"
Gaby Sanchez will be the starting 3B next season, so adding Feliz would make sense, especially when he's gonna cost quite a bit of cash.. Vlady on the other hand is only looking for a one or two year deal and will be relatively inexpensive. The reward is much higher than the risk, so the Fish would be really dumb not to atleast take a look. As for an Uggla/Jackson swap. I'm still not sold on Edwin Jackson, but it's not a bad idea. Maybe if Detroit also through Dontrelle Willis in so he can return home and revive his career as maybe a closer? Ofcourse, the Tigers would have to take some of his contract and the Marlins would have to throw in another chip. Maybe Renyel Pinto and Uggla for Jackson, Dontrelle and cash?

He's a .321 career hitter...and it isn't like he just hit well against the Rangers. Slam on the Rangers all you want, but most of you slobber at the thought of getting your hands on their up and coming young pitchers.
