Possible Destinations: Mike Lowell

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 18, 2010 at 6:36pm CDT

Mike Lowell has thought about asking the Red Sox for his release, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com and various other reporters. The Red Sox will be paying most of Lowell's $12MM salary regardless of what the next few weeks bring, but it's time to consider some possible landing spots for the 36-year-old in case Boston trades or releases him. First, let's take stock of Lowell and what he can be expected to contribute.

After offseason thumb surgery and a knee contusion in Spring Training, Lowell's health is far from certain, especially at his age. He posted a .290/.337/.474 line last year and has hit .263/.354/.404 in 65 plate appearances so far in 2010. With one homer and eight walks, his power appears to be waning, but he's still getting on base. As for his defense, Lowell has played just 32 innings at third so far this year. Last year, he posted a UZR/150 of -14.4, which suggests he was – and probably remains – a defensive liability.

The Rangers pursued Lowell last winter, before concerns about his thumb put the deal on hold. With Vladimir Guerrero and Michael Young around, the Rangers appear set at DH and third. First baseman Justin Smoak should hit and Chris Davis and Ryan Garko are around, too, so the Rangers don't seem likely to pursue Lowell again. The Marlins were another rumored destination over the winter, but that was before Gaby Sanchez had proven he could hit in the major leagues.

Earlier in the month, a friend of Lowell's told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that Lowell would like to play for the Twins or Angels. The Twins are starting light-hitting Nick Punto, but Punto's a much more reliable choice on defense, according to UZR. Angels third baseman Brandon Wood has endured one of the slowest starts in the majors, so the Halos are one potential match.

Other possible suitors include the Mariners who need offense (but not more fading veterans) and the Orioles, who have no home runs from their first basemen. Lowell seems to fit best in the American League, where he can DH, but there don't appear to be starting jobs out there for him, unless the Orioles or Angels decide they need production now.

Pirates Sign Six From Latin America

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 18, 2010 at 4:47pm CDT

The Pirates signed six Latin American players including Venezuelan outfielder Willy Garcia, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Pirates Latin American scouting director Rene Gayo says the club believes Garcia, who received a $280K bonus, has "an athletic body with a chance to develop five tools."

The club also signed five other players, including four pitchers. The new additions include right-handers Brayan Almonte, Oderman Rocha and Jose Luis Acosta and left-hander Angel Sanchez. The Pirates also signed first baseman Jose Roman.

Possible Destinations: Jose Bautista

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 18, 2010 at 4:32pm CDT

You're forgiven if you overlooked Jose Bautista coming into the season, too. He had never had a slugging percentage above .420 in any one year and at 29, he wasn't a likely candidate to gain much power. But Bautista, who hit ten home runs last September, finds himself all over the leaderboard a quarter of the way into the season. He started the day third in the league in home runs and fifth in extra base hits, so we can't ignore him any longer.

It's too early to write the Blue Jays off, however. They won again today and they've been among baseball's best teams in May. But should GM Alex Anthopoulos decide to sell, he'll have a versatile and powerful player to market. Does that make Bautista the new Ben Zobrist? Dave Cameron of FanGraphs says no – or at least not yet. Bautista has only hit this well for two and a half months, so he has some work to do.

Comparisons aside, there's no question that Bautsita would appeal to major league teams if the Blue Jays fall out of contention this summer. Whether or not advanced metrics say Bautista's a good defender (they don't) the Blue Jays obviously consider him a major league defender at third and in the outfield. Whether or not you believe in his power, he has out-homered Albert Pujols, Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Howard since last September. Plus, Bautista's under team control through 2011.

If he becomes available, the Yankees could have interest, given the injuries to Nick Johnson and Curtis Granderson; the Twins could decide they're more comfortable using Nick Punto as a utility player; the Mariners could spell Jose Lopez at third and use Bautista at DH and in right; the powerless A's could inquire; the Nationals could put Bautista in right; there's no logical position for him in Houston, but the Astros could use the power; the Padres could consider Bautista if they become buyers. In short, many teams could have interest in Bautista, but for now his bat is keeping the Jays in contention.

International Links: Maya, Rodriguez, Minarik

By Nick Collias | May 18, 2010 at 3:28pm CDT

A peck of links on the second day of the Venezuelan Summer League…

  • Cuban righthander Yuniesky Maya is about to be unblocked and become available to sign, according to his agent, tweets the Toronto Star's Morgan Campbell. In April El Nuevo Herald's Jorge Ebro wrote that interest was heating up for the hard-throwing starter, though he has almost entirely been connected thus far to a single team, the Red Sox. At 28, Maya is a bit older than the new crop of Cubans such as Aroldis Chapman and Juan Yasser Serrano, but Maya told Terreno de Pelota upon defecting last September that after two World Baseball Classics, numerous international tournaments and six Cuban National Series, he was ready to jump straight to the majors a la Orlando Hernandez.
  • The Tigers signed 17-year-old righthanded pitcher Jose Rodriguez last Thursday, according to the Venezuelan paper El Sol de Margarita. Rodriguez reportedly throws a strong slider, changeup, and a fastball that tops out at around 90, though that number could rise un poco once he packs a few more arepas onto his 6-foot, 154-pound frame. For now, he's headed to the aforementioned Venezuelan Summer League.
  • The Phillies have signed 16-year-old Czech pitcher Marek Minarik, reports Baseball de World. Minarik has most recently played for Lokomotiva Louny in the Czech Republic and reportedly received offers from four teams after participating in the recent MLB European Academy Tryout in Prague.

Ryan Garko Clears Waivers

By Zachary Links | May 18, 2010 at 2:48pm CDT

May 18th: Garko cleared waivers and will head to Triple A Oklahoma City, tweets MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.

May 13th: The Rangers plan on placing Ryan Garko on waivers, according to Richard Durrett of ESPN Dallas.  T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com writes that Garko will be optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City and then put on outright waivers.  The Rangers are making the move to open up a spot for the returning Nelson Cruz.

Texas claimed Garko in April to be used as a backup to Chris Davis who could hit against lefties.  However, the switch-hitting Justin Smoak's presence means that the need for Garko is no longer great.

Garko, 29, has struggled thus far in 2010, posting a .094/.171/.094 slash line in 37 plate appearances.

If The Brewers Become Sellers

By Tim Dierkes | May 18, 2010 at 11:55am CDT

Having dropped seven in a row, the Brewers stand at 15-23, seven games out in the NL Central.  Though more than 76% of the season remains, Dave Cameron of FanGraphs points out that Milwaukee's playoff chances already look slim.  Here's a look at who might be available if Doug Melvin opens up shop a month or two from now.

The discussion begins with Prince Fielder, who is signed for $10.5MM this year and arbitration-eligible for 2011.  Fielder's power went missing in April, but he seems to be back in business now.  Though the Brewers could lose Fielder to free agency, there's a case to be made for keeping him until next year's trade deadline in the name of competing in 2011.  If he's dealt this summer, I think the package would have to focus on players who can help next year.

The majority of the Brewers' rotation might be immovable.  Randy Wolf just began a three-year, $29.75MM deal, and his numbers have slipped.  Doug Davis has been lousy, though he's on a one-year, $5.25MM deal.  Dave Bush's ugly peripherals don't back up his 4.27 ERA, and he's being paid $4.215MM.  Jeff Suppan, now working in long relief, is the highest-paid of all.

Trevor Hoffman's $8MM salary is prohibitive, though he's shown signs of life this month outside of a mop-up appearance.  Well-paid relievers LaTroy Hawkins and David Riske are on the DL.

The Brewers do have some attractive trade chips.  Corey Hart is playing better, so he could be dealt assuming the Brewers don't plan to tender him a contract after the season.  It might be tougher to trade Rickie Weeks, who is also arbitration-eligible one last time after 2010.  Lefty Manny Parra had an excellent April, but the Brewers wouldn't have much motivation to trade him.  With Davis hitting the DL, Parra rejoins the Brewers' rotation today.

Veterans such as Craig Counsell, Jody Gerut, Gregg Zaun, Claudio Vargas, and Jim Edmonds would make sense to shop, as all are free agents after the season (Zaun has a club option).

GM Initiation: Andrew Friedman

By Tim Dierkes | May 18, 2010 at 9:02am CDT

Andrew Friedman was promoted to Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations of the Rays on November 3rd, 2005.  Fun fact: I wrote MLBTR's first post the next day.  Friedman struck his first deal about a month later, acquiring third baseman Sean Burroughs from the Padres for pitcher Dewon Brazelton.  Both were former first-round draft picks.  As part of the deal, the Rays used their Rule 5 pick on pitcher Steve Andrade and sent him to the Padres as well.  Another fun fact: Dan Uggla was chosen by the Marlins in that same Rule 5 draft.

Friedman kindly answered a few questions for MLBTR about his first trade.

MLB Trade Rumors: Burroughs had a decent chance of being non-tendered had he remained with the Padres.  Did you consider retaining Brazelton and waiting to see whether Burroughs hit the free agent market?  Would the Rays have tendered Brazelton a contract?

Andrew Friedman: When you plan to acquire an arbitration-eligible player, you always have to look at the possibility that he might be non-tendered, and work through the implications if he is.  It made sense, where we were as an organization at that time, to look for upside, and Burroughs was a player with significant upside – a young third baseman with defensive ability and a great pedigree who had shown a lot of promise with the bat in his minor league career.  We had a player whom the Padres liked and who didn't fit into our plans, so it made sense to pursue a swap before the tender date.

MLBTR: You described this as a "classic change-of-scenery trade."  Why do you think that change failed to produce results for either principal player?

Friedman: Like most "change-of-scenery" trades, this one involved players who had struggled to live up to their tools.  That happens an awful lot – it's a hard game, and if success were as simple as switching uniforms, you'd see it a lot more often.  We've had a few instances here where a change of scenery yielded tremendous results, but most of the time, it doesn't work despite everybody's best efforts.  It's very difficult, no matter your physical ability, to have a long, successful major league career.

MLBTR: This was the one deal struck by the Rays at your first Winter Meetings in Dallas.  How would you describe your Meetings experience as a rookie?

Friedman: The first time is always a learning experience.  You're still meshing as a front office, and still getting to know many of the other GM's.  In my case, I'd been with the organization for a couple of years before taking this job, and that made the transition more seamless.  I had a good grasp of our own personnel, both in the front office and on the field.  That was a big help but it was still an adjustment.  We felt good about what we did there and the lessons we took from it, and we continue to adjust and refine our processes every year.

MLBTR: Shortly after the Brazelton trade, another former first-round pick, Josh Hamilton, cleared waivers.  Were you surprised no one made a claim?

Friedman: It was not a surprise.  We all know Josh's talent but it was more of a procedural move as he was still on the restricted list.

MLBTR: When you make a trade, do you want to see your former player have success with his new team?  If your end of the deal doesn't pay off, do you prefer the other team's doesn't either?

Friedman: Once we make a trade, we're most invested in the success of the players we've acquired.  But we don't root against those we’ve traded away as we've had so many great relationships with our players over the years.

Thanks to Andrew Friedman for contributing.  Ned Colletti, Neal Huntington, Jon Daniels, and Josh Byrnes have also participated in the GM Initiation series.

Ortiz Expects Pedro To Pitch This Season

By Tim Dierkes | May 18, 2010 at 8:14am CDT

David Ortiz expects his friend Pedro Martinez to pitch this season, reports Mark Hale of the New York Post.  Ortiz spoke to Pedro about a month ago; at that time the pitcher was working out but not really talking to teams.

Back on April 6th, Martinez said he wouldn't need long to get ready and had a preference for an NL East Coast contender.  Pedro is known to have been in contact with the Phillies, while the Mets appear uninterested in a second stint.  Given Martinez's criteria, he might need to get the Nationals involved to spark a competition for his services.

Upcoming Ten And Five Rights

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 17, 2010 at 10:04pm CDT

Players who have accumulated ten years of major league service time can't be traded without their permission if they have spent the last five years with their current club. Ten and five rights can make it much more difficult for a GM to pull off a deal. Here's a list of players whose five and ten rights kick in in the near future:

  • A.J. Pierzynski – June 14th
  • Mark Buehrle – July 6th
  • Jimmy Rollins – Rollins' rights kick in September 7th, long after the trade deadline. The Phillies have not shown any interest in dealing Rollins, but it's worth noting that they won't be able to trade their star shortstop next winter or next season without his permission.
  • Mike Lowell – Lowell would have ten and five rights after the season, but only if he stays in Boston. If Lowell, a free agent after 2010, signs elsewhere, he will have no such rights.
  • Ichiro – Ichiro will gain ten and five rights after the season. He has a limited no-trade clause now, and isn't going anywhere regardless of his contract status.
  • Albert Pujols – Pujols isn't going anywhere either, and his limited no-trade clause becomes a full no-trade clause after the season.
  • Rafael Furcal – Like Ichiro and Pujols, Furcal will see his limited no-trade clause become complete after the season. Furcal is under contract through 2011 and the Dodgers have an option for 2012.
