Pirates Acquire Jonathan Van Every

By Tim Dierkes | May 31, 2010 at 8:54am CDT

The Pirates reacquired outfielder Jonathan Van Every from the Red Sox for catcher Josue Peley, reports MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch.  The Sox had acquired Van Every from the Bucs on April 24th, but designated him for assignment ten days ago.

Van Every, 30, missed most of the '09 season due to knee surgery.  In '08 he hit .263/.360/.524 in 442 Triple A plate appearances.  He's played mostly center field in the minors.

Peley, 22, has struggled mightily with the bat in his minor league career, most recently with the Pirates' Low A club.  Peley was a 35th-round draft and follow pick in '06; the Pirates converted him from middle infield to catcher.

When the Pirates originally sent Van Every to the Red Sox, it was for a PTNL. Who was the original PTNL? Did they just get cash?

I honestly thought this guy was a pitcher, because both times I saw him play with the Red Sox he was pitching, and not too good at all.

Pirates get vanEvery back. thanks for the..2 weeks use of his glove think it was? Interesting of all things a catcher and a non hitting one. Sox already have all defense and -0- offense Christian Vazquez, plus Michael Thomas, both drafted in 12th round or higher the last 2 seasons at low A ball Greeneville and doubt would be sent to high a ball where legit guys Federowicz and Lavarnway are already splitting C/DH on every other day basis.

Must be a serious “take anything you can get anywhere” for VanEvery, or the best of a list available from Pittsburgh, still with the Sox ML full of catchers from high A down, it is strange.

Meh. Even in the minors you need a backup catcher. Good to see Van Every catch on with a AAAA club again. He’s a good kid.

Let’s see. AAA player Van Every for a low A ball catcher who couldn’t hit water if he fell out of the boat. Way to go Theo—you’ve done it again.

Kind of weird considering we still owe the Pirates a PTBNL for when we got Van Every from them in the first place..
