Nationals Release Bisenius, Wood, Van Every

The Nationals released right-handers Joe Bisenius and Tim Wood and outfielder Jonathan Van Every, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson (on Twitter).

Bisenius, 28, appeared in five games for the Nationals last year in his first MLB action since 2007. He spent most of the season in the minors, where he posted a 3.05 ERA with 10.8 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 in 38 1/3 innings across three levels.

Wood logged 27 2/3 innings for the Marlins last year, posting a 5.53 ERA. Also 28, he has a 4.72 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 over the course of his eight-year minor league career.

Van Every played all three outfield positions for the Red Sox in 2010, the third consecutive season in which he had a brief stint in the majors. Red Sox manager Terry Francona has called on the 31-year-old to pitch in both of the past two seasons and Van Every has also pitched in a minor league game. He has a .254/.356/.477 line in a decade's worth of minor league plate appearances.

Minor Deals: Yankees, Chulk, Van Every, Coats

Let's take a look at today's notable minor league deals, with the most recent updates at the top:

  • The Yankees signed Doug Bernier, Buddy Carlyle, Neal Cotts and Gustavo Molina to minor league deals, the team announced. The club officially announced its deals with Andy Sisco and outfielder-turned-pitcher Brian Anderson.
  • The Pirates have welcomed back Donald Veal just two weeks after non-tendering him, Eddy tweets.  Veal underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this year. 
  • The Rays picked up right-handed reliever Jonah Bayliss, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America (via Twitter).  Bayliss turned in a 3.58 ERA with 8.4 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 for Houston's Triple-A club last season.
  • The Athletics signed right-handed reliever Vinnie Chulk, tweets Eddy.  Chulk appeared in 28 games for Pittsburgh's Triple-A affiliate in 2010 and spent the other half of the year with the Hiroshima Carp.  His numbers overseas left much to be desired but the righty carries more than 250 games of big league experience.
  • First baseman Andy Tracy has hooked on with the Diamondbacks, tweets Baseball America's Matt Eddy.  The left-handed hitter, who turned 37-years-old on Saturday, has spent the last three years with the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate.  In 2010 he hit .275/.373/.492, numbers that are slightly better than his career averages.
  • The Nationals signed outfielder Jonathan Van Every, according to Eddy (via Twitter).  The 31-year-old boasts a career .471 slugging percentage in Triple-A and can play all three outfield positions.  Van Every played in 39 games for Boston's varsity squad across the last three years.
  • Washington picked up another versatile, left-handed hitting outfielder in Buck Coats, Eddy tweets.  Coats, who spent the first seven years of his career with the Cubs, has a lifetime slash line of .294/.352/.407 at the Triple-A level.
  • The Cubs invited first baseman Bryan LaHair and outfielder Brad Snyder to Spring Training, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat (on Twitter).

Pirates Acquire Jonathan Van Every

The Pirates reacquired outfielder Jonathan Van Every from the Red Sox for catcher Josue Peley, reports MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch.  The Sox had acquired Van Every from the Bucs on April 24th, but designated him for assignment ten days ago.

Van Every, 30, missed most of the '09 season due to knee surgery.  In '08 he hit .263/.360/.524 in 442 Triple A plate appearances.  He's played mostly center field in the minors.

Peley, 22, has struggled mightily with the bat in his minor league career, most recently with the Pirates' Low A club.  Peley was a 35th-round draft and follow pick in '06; the Pirates converted him from middle infield to catcher.

Red Sox Designate Jonathan Van Every

Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports (via Twitter) that the Red Sox have designated Jonathan Van Every for assignment.  The move was made to free up a roster spot for Jacoby Ellsbury's activation from the disabled list.

The Red Sox traded for Van Every on April 24 in order to fill the holes in their outfield left by Ellsbury and Mike Cameron's trips to the DL.  Appearing mostly as a late-game defensive replacement, Van Every hit .211/.286/.421 in 21 plate appearances this season.  It was Van Every's second stint in Boston, as the outfielder appeared in 18 games for the Sox over the 2007-08 seasons before being released last July.

Though this is Van Every's tenth year of pro ball and he might have a bit of that "quadruple A" stigma, you have to think that there's room somewhere on a major league roster for an guy who brings a decent glove to every outfield position and has an .853 career OPS at Triple-A.

Red Sox Acquire Jonathan Van Every

The Red Sox acquired outfielder Jonathan Van Every from the Pirates in exchange for a player to be named later, according to a team press release.  To make room for Van Every on the 40-man roster, Boston has designated righty Santo Luis for assignment.

Van Every spent 2008 and part of 2009 with Boston, making 18 big league appearances across the two seasons.  Despite hitting .263/.360/.524 with 26 HRs in 2008 for the club's Triple-A affiliate, the 30-year-old was released in July of the following year.  Van Every has one option remaining.  The move improves Boston's outfield depth as Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury are on the 15-day disabled list.

Luis, 26, was claimed off waivers from the White Sox ten days ago. He posted a 4.34 ERA, 12.7 K/9, and 3.7 BB/9 in 56 High A relief innings last year, allowing 11 home runs.  Chicago had claimed Luis from the Astros in '07 in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.
