Poll: Which Team Offered Guerrero $8MM?

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 3, 2011 at 8:30am CDT

The Orioles have interest in Vladimir Guerrero, but their offer sits in the $4.5-5MM range and the nine-time All-Star is looking for more. ESPN.com's Buster Olney reported over the weekend that the Orioles are being told Guerrero has an $8MM offer in hand from an unknown team.

Guerrero doesn't have that many suitors to begin with, since he's a DH at this point in his career. The 35-year-old can hit – he won his ninth Silver Slugger last year after clubbing 29 homers – but teams with DHs probably don't have room for him. That means the Rays aren't interested and leaves the Blue Jays, Angels and Rangers as the most logical potential suitors outside of Baltimore.

So let's answer the $8MM question…

Why wouldn’t Toronto want him? Aren’t they trying to switch Adam Lind to 1B and Jose Bautista to 3B?

Plus, they can fill him in a DH.

HOW DARE YOU ACCUSE VLADDIE OF DISHONESTY. LIKE 5 MIL IS NOT ENOUGH FOR ONE HUMAN BEING THAT HAS MADE 118 MILLION DOLLARS OVER THE PAST 14 YEARS! He is not a money hoarding MAN CHILD who is a member of “THE MOST PATHETIC KNOWN MILLIONAIRES CLUB” (along with OLLIE PEREZ, LUIS CASTILLO and so on). He just has not signed that offer that almost doubles the Orioles, even though the 8 MIL offer has to come from a legit contender. Vladdie does not think everyone following his career are complete idiots.

I think it’d be stupid for any team to offer him that much at this point, which is why I don’t believe it’s true. He’s going to have to take a lot less if he wants to play this year. Spring Training is almost here and he’s lucky the O’s are offering around 5.

Cleveland wouldn’t have been willing to give out nearly that much. They’re stuck with Hafner at DH, aren’t competing and seem to be adding people on minor league deals. KC wouldn’t be paying that much either, not with Kila on the 25 man.

I don’t think this offer exists.

If he doesn’t get that team to make an offer, he will settle for the team that offers the most, or that he feels comfortable playing with or he just may sit out.

If I were a GM, I’d offer him 6 mil, honestly, deflated from a 8-10 mil offer by the poor market. Cause remember, this is Vlad Guerrero, he ain’t no scrub, this is a former MVP who’s career low ops is .794 and second worst is .841. That’s the BOTTOM of his production, one more time: he ain’t no scrub.

    Reply
    • twins33

He isn’t a scrub, but it’s February 3rd. Spring Training is right around the corner and not many teams need DH’s. Both of those things drop his value a lot. 5-6 at this point just seems to high to me. If it was a month or two ago, I could see 6-8, but the price is dropping the longer he waits.

Obviously there could be stupid desperation by some GM out there, but I think he’s lucky that there’s a 5 million dollar deal on the table this far into the offseason.

Last night on the FAN590 in Toronto, John Farrell indicated that one of the uncertainties that the Jay’s need to resolve is who will hit behind Bautista to protect him. Depending on how the Jays are doing at the deadline, he could also be a trade chip. Don’t count out the Jays. AND, if Vlad had an $8MM offer and hadn’t jumped on it, it could be because it is from the Jays, who sometimes face problems convincing players spending half their season in a foreign country.

can’t blame him for saying he has $8 MIL offer and not wanting to go to Baltimore. why would he want to go there? maybe he wants to win, and that’s not happening in Baltimore.
he is more than likely waiting and hoping another team steps up. might even be worth it for him to just wait even if it lasts into the season. injuries happen. he wouldn’t get $8 MIL then, but he could still get PAID for the time he would be with the new team.

Baltimore should tell Vlad that the offer will only be on the table another week or so, then they will pull it and move on. Vlady would be a nice add for the Orioles, but it’s pretty clear that he doesn’t want to play in Baltimore; he didn’t want to four years ago, and I don’t think he wants to now. While it would be nice to have him in the lineup, he clearly is on the decline. The Orioles really don’t need him, and will be fine without him.

So he plays ever third of fourth game, is the first guy off the bench (if our starters ever come out, HA!) and is our dh in interleague and the ws. Think about that line up! Think about having right handed power, with that hitting style, behind howard! He’s got the leadership and clubhouse qualities to be a fit, and more than anything, I’d bet he wants to be on a competitor. The Phils won’t do it, but damn they should.

No. “All” is a generalization because it means I am talking about everyone. “A lot” is completely ambiguous, it does not indicate majority or minority, it simply means many. If there were 1 million apples, and I said I have a lot of those apples, that does not mean I have 900 000 apples like you think. That could mean I have 100 apples. And that is completely true, many Americans tend to boast about the worth of their currency relative to other country’s. Again, learn to interpret what people are saying.

Your analogy is imprecise. But once again, nice try.

In the future, if you’re worried about about being interpreted clearly, write what you mean. Or leave the societal commentary off the baseball rumor site. Whichever.

No. My analogy is exactly right. “A lot” is not exact at all, it could mean any amount. If you truly think a lot means just short of all, you’re definitely misinformed and just posturing at this point.

Second, I said exactly what I meant. I did not avoid anything or imply anything. I said pretty explicitly that many Americans do presumptively boast about the value of their currency, How is that not writing what I “mean”? LOL.

Third, if I didn’t distinguish between “a lot” and “all” for you (“societal commentary” if that’s what you think I’m doing, LMAO, whatever that means), you would not know the difference. But now you do, so be more thankful you don’t have to embarrass yourself somewhere else in the future.

Fourth, I will take from your lack of any argument or anything in your last post that you know I;m right and have conceded.

Also your analogy is poor because in the anology your are talking specifically about quatity. Had you said “A lot of apples are green” that would have been a better example.

Secondly, where are all these Americans boasting of the strength of the dollar? Trust me, we know our economy is hurting.

Third, you are still making a generalization. Despite you distinguishing all and a lot. Keep rpeating it. Doesn’t change your facts.

Fourth, I’m not going to respond to this again. So go away.

And I am not talking just about now, Americans have always boasted about their currency. What facts lol? It is a FACT that many Americans blindly praise the worth of their dollar. Isn’t it possible or even likely that the 8 million dollar offer includes 4 million guaranteed and 4 million if he reaches, say, 550 PA’s. That would explain it, right? Not sure why people haven’t realized the mystery offer could be something like that. And I wouldn’t be surprised if its the Rangers because they are so secretive. If they moved Napoli to be their second catcher they could find time for Vlad to play DH for at least 70 games and more in the event of injury. But it only seems likely if they want to trade David Murphy.

funny people think vlad isnt worth 8mil? .300, 29 hm, 115rbi 175 hits last year, as a DH why not, if your not gonna pay him that dollar your not gonna get what u can out of him. do you really think manny is gonna be MVP type of player only playin for 2mil? maybe if he was gettin 8+mill he would be

wtf? how does manny’s salary dictate his production? you a fortune teller or something?
and vlad posted a .841 OPS last year. thats not worth 8M, especially if he can’t play the field.

please stop using batting average as a tool of comparison. use OBP.
and don’t use counting stats either. that depends on at-bats, which depends on whether maddon plays manny everyday or not

The results of the survey are pretty funny. He had nice stats last year, but remember that he played half his games in hitter-friendly Arlington and his second half was very different from his first half last season. OPS split alone was .919(1st)/.748(2nd). He also didn’t look that good in the playoffs.

yeah overall his stats were only above average, not fantastic or MVP level.

I’m still trying to figure out why the Rangers passed on Vlad. I watched him deteriorate in Anaheim, but grabbed him cheap in my fantasy league because I remembered watching him rake in Texas. He’s certainly not a clubhouse problem…in fact, his mama’s cooking makes him a favorite. So Texas may still be in the hunt, Michael Young notwithstanding. But I think it’s a ploy…and the O’s will end up with him for around $5 million.

Probably because they didn’t want a full time DH. Beltre can potentially equal Guerrero’s offense while seriously upgrading the Rangers infield defense. Now they can have a rotating DH and give more rest to regulars.

I think you’re right…they think that Beltre will come close to Vlad’s numbers. And I think they are going to be WOEfully disappointed.

You obviously didn’t watch the second half of the Rangers season or, more specifically, the playoffs. Vlad started off last year on fire and made the Angels look really foolish for letting him walk. But as the season wore on, he looked worse and worse at the plate. By September he didn’t even resemble the old Vlad anymore. Not only did his HR output and AVG. take a big plunge, but he stopped even hitting the ball hard- WAY too many weak ground-outs to 3B and strikeouts guessing. In the first half of the season, there wasn’t a single Ranger hitter I wanted up in crunch time more than Vlad. By the end of the season, I cringed every time he came up to bat. He regressed that much. He looked every bit the washed up player by October. There is absolutely no way he puts up better numbers than Beltre. I still love Vlad, but that’s not happening. .

I doubt he was the one who made it up. More likely he was fed it by someone close to Guerrero. What would Olney have to gain?

There is absolutely no reason to believe any NL team would sign him. DH’s don’t play in the NL, and he killed his value to any NL team after his play in the outfield in the world series

This is as ridiculous as Lance Berkman getting 8 mil to be an outfielder for the Cardinals. No one is going to pay 8 mil for a broke defender and deteriorating offensive guy, unless you are the Cardinals. I guess Lance was more important than getting Pujols signed. So my vote goes to the Cardinals as the other team, or there wasn’t an 8mil offer.

I voted for there is no offer before I even saw the choices, but part of me still thinks if such an offer exists, it would come from a delusional owner. I would have said only Uncle Drayton and the Astros would make such an offer to have Vlad pinch hit off the bench, (God help us) play the outfield with Pence and Lee (to have the slowest corner outfielders in baseball) or to have him DH during interleague games in AL parks. Since the Wells trade though, I might have to include the Angels with the Astros as the wackiest teams to make such an offer.

You know, I had thought all day that it was “There is no $8 offer,” and that if there were one, there is no way it would be an NL team. But, now that I have read the Phillies are interested in Gary Matthews, Jr., they are back in the running in my mind for the mystery contract. If half or so of that is in the form of incentives, that may make more sense for them than Matthews… Just MNSHO.
