Stark On Phillies, Marlins, Young, Morgan, Astros

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 23, 2011 at 7:20pm CDT

As ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark points out, the Phillies’ decision to sign Luis Castillo suggests they aren’t overly optimistic about the timetable for Chase Utley’s return. According to Stark, the Phillies heard that there is no guarantee that surgery would make Utley healthy again, so they’re hoping rehab works. Here are the rest of Stark’s rumors…

  • The Marlins have decided that Matt Dominguez isn’t ready for the majors, so they’re “actively exploring” outside options. Earlier tonight, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports heard that the Marlins were “unlikely” to look outside of the organization for help at the hot corner.
  • Though the Pirates are still shopping Ryan Doumit, teams that have spoken to Pittsburgh say the catcher/outfielder is not drawing much interest.
  • Multiple teams, including the Phillies, Marlins and Cubs, appear to be eyeing Michael Young. None of those clubs can afford Young’s annual salary of $16MM and the Rangers expect a “massive” return if they’re going to eat a significant amount of Young’s salary.
  • Scouts covering the Nationals say Nyjer Morgan is very much available. “They're trying to give him away," one scout said, before suggesting that the Nationals could release him.
  • Scouts watching the Yankees expect the team to add a veteran catcher in the next week.
  • The Phillies are looking for a veteran outfielder who’s capable of playing center field.
  • Teams that have spoken with the Astros say they’d like to add a veteran catcher, but have very little money to spend.

Can Mark Kotsay play CF, is he available? It’s not everyday you hear veteran, CF, and available in the same sentence.

Maybe Rowand can come back to form in Philly?

I think they would be targeting Rowand. I think that would be a good addition and like you said, maybe he can find himself in CBP again.

The Phillies can’t afford his hideous contract.

I think the Giants would eat all of it… at least from what I’ve recently read about the situation. If not all at least the vast majority of it.

The Giants are willing to eat most of it; I believe they are trying to make room for Brandon Belt because KNBR (the local sports station) also said that they are considering getting rid of either Schierholtz or Ishikawa. KNBR also said that the Giants called the White Sox and the Phillies to try to make a deal involving Rowand; I personally don’t expect anything to happen, though.

I see a lot of Giants games because I live very close to SF and Rowand does not look good at all. I don’t think he will be able to find himself. His playing time has been greatly diminished and he can’t seem to lay off sliders 5 feet off of the plate; I think he’s done.

As a sox fan I would not mind having rowand back depending on what it’s for. He would be a good 4th of and take over for Carlos In late inning close games.

You mean the marlins are not going to rush a prospect to the majors? Quick head for the bomb shelters! its the end! or maybe they finally understand nature vs. nurture.

DeWayne Wise hasn’t been that good. If you’re going to go outside the org.
There are more CF’s available than 2B/3B.

I’m a bit surprised no one has picked up Doumit, maybe he can be the Catcher the Yankees are going to add? Just tossing up ideas.

Doumit stinks, hasn’t been healthy, and has a bad contract. He has a good bat but not good enough to offset his brutal defense. Pirates have been shopping him for a long time with no takers.

Yep, the Yankees already have 2 major-league catchers who should be DHs, so they definitely don’t need a 3rd one.

What about trying to find an OF and move Coghlan to 2nd or 3rd and Infante to the other?

Not trying to say anything in particular but…Ben Revere would be a great fit and isn’t unavailable.

Easier to find 2nd/3rd than a CF right? Can one of their starters play a decent CF? Don’t think Stanton can.

No your right, the Twins are just begging teams to take a 22 year old Ben Revere off their hands with 2 of their aging OF’s to hit free agency next offseason.

…especially one who has hit .300+ every year since he’s been a pro and has blazing speed.

I know he has his on field problems, but I wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on Morgan. It the Tigers picked him up, Jim Leyland would whip him into shape like only a chain smoking, Grandpa can.
