Quick Hits: Valverde, Wang, Cubs

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | October 27, 2011 at 2:48pm CDT

Links for Thursday afternoon, before what may be the final baseball game of the 2011 season…

  • The Tigers are expected to pick up Jose Valverde’s $9MM option for 2012 soon, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (Twitter link).
  • Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post hears from Alan Nero, the agent for Chien-Ming Wang, that a new deal between the right-hander and the Nationals is likely. The Nationals are Wang's first choice and negotiations are "routine," according to Nero. Washington GM Mike Rizzo confirmed yesterday that the sides are working toward a new contract.
  • Cubs assistant GM Randy Bush will stay on under president of baseball operations Theo Epstein, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times (on Twitter).
  • Melissa Segura of SI.com hears that baseball’s upcoming collective bargaining agreement could include a cap in the $2-2.5MM range for international signings (Twitter link). It’s not clear whether the cap would apply to all countries or just the Dominican Republic.

The Tigers are going to their Valverde to extend their pleasure.

The Wang signing is just the tip. All Washington has to do now is sign Dang and Doodle.

Glad the Cubs are staying old school enough to keep Bush as well.

Im glad that Theo is keeping a good grip on Bush…his a good man & know the Cubs system..really well…he will be a key piece 2 getting the Cubs where they want 2 go…I just hope Theo…gets rid of QUADE…I don’t know if he will or not…but the team looked flat & had no urgency…lack of power….poor fielding…& leaving runners in scoring position really hurt…losing 1 run games…etc…mixing & matching line-up’s don’t work in the big leagues…Quade looked like a guy that did not know how 2 do a line-up card..Mixing & Matching..tells me that there’s a lack of confidence…in teams offense…a Ryne Sandberg would get fans in the sits…& a good free agency period and Winter meeting..should help…If they went with Sandberg..I believe a big shake up is coming…Hoyer will bring in a top notch pitcher or two… as 4 the line-up…that’s a tough one…Big Z is a gone..&…A-RAM is up in the air…if I was the G.M…I would want 2 rebuild the pitching staff…and right field has been a trouble spot….focus should be on getting a POWER HITTING right fielder and starting pitching in free agency…JOKER
