Tigers Willing To Deal Jacob Turner

By Zachary Links | December 31, 2011 at 6:47pm CDT

The Tigers have made it known to other teams that they are willing to trade Jacob Turner in a deal for the right pitcher, tweets Buster Olney of ESPN.com.  The Tigers have seemed willing to deal the right-hander in the past but this is the first indication that they are actively advertising Turner's availability.

Turner, 20, had a big fan in A's GM Billy Beane and was discussed as the centerpice for a deal that would have brought Gio Gonzalez to Detroit.  Ultimately, Gonzalez was shipped to the Nationals as the Tigers were unwilling to part with prospects Nick Castellanos and Drew Smyly in addition to Turner.

It's hard to say who the "right pitcher" for Detroit might be, but the Tigers are one of the clubs who are in the mix for Cubs right-hander Matt Garza.  Last season, Turner spent the bulk of the year with Double-A Erie where he turned in a 3.48 ERA with 7.1 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 17 starts.

I really think that Turner will be traded before the start of Spring Training. Bums me out for a selfish reason because I just bought one of his autographed cards. As long as we trade him for someone that can help I guess; though I really do like this kid.

Sure in a sample size at the MLB level he looked ok. Who knows what he can do with 31 starts.

I’d be the one losing here! I have his 2011 ST GU jersey signed, 2010 BP jersey signed, and 25 autographed cards/baseballs/photo’s and his debut ticket signed. So, Cubs fans if you’re interested let me know 🙂

I’ve seen over pays before, but I think there is no way the Cubs can get Castellanos and Turner in the same deal. They could get Smyly and Turner but only if it was a 2 for 1 deal and nobody was added. I think the best the Cubs could do is a Turner, Oliver, and Paulino deal.

Turner to the Padres, Rizzo to the Cubs, Garza to Tigers to start. Add a few pieces here and there to make it work.

Headley to the Tigers too for a big confusing 3 way deal?

Headley is much better than he is given credit for. Get him out of Petco and he’s a potential all star. He’s also young and under control.

Yeah all 3 might be a little much. Take one of the Tigers top 3 out add a lesser prospect and the Padres kick in another prospect.

How many 3b have been more valuable than Headley over the last two years?

Not a trick question, but at the same time answering that will prove your point to lack merit. Assuming your a Tigers fan, and having looked up the production they got from 3b last year… of all people to criticize Headley, I’d think a Tigers fan would be one of the least likely. Headley is not a star, but a well above-average regular in his prime with three years of control left. He out hit Hunter Pence when you look at what each did away from their home parks, not to mention being a ton cheaper.

If Tigers seriously want Garza, it would cost them Turner plus one other good prospect whether if it is Castellanos or Smyly and some low level lotto prospects.  That is the price Cubs are seeking and if not interested then so be it. There are plenty of other teams interested in Garza’s service who just had top 10 WAR season last year with 2.95 FIP.

I’m good with trading Turner. I love the kid. I saw his MLB Debut. However, I like Drew Smyly a lot more. If anybody asks for Turner and either Smyly or Castellanos it should be and has been an immediate no. I think that Turner, Oliver, Avisail Garcia, and Bruce Rondon should be a haul that would entice Theo.

I’m a Tiger fan, and I would be shocked if Garcia ever becomes a major league player.  He had a .294 OBP and 11 home runs last year in High-A as a 20 year-old, and the K/BB ratio is what you would expect if you brought a 20 year-old up to the majors.  At 20, he’s young, but he’s just about at the level he should be at.  Also, the power still needs to develop.  While he’s much more likely to develop power than make adequate improvements in plate discipline, that’s still another question mark.  This is also a corner outfielder we’re talking about, not a shortstop or catcher.  If he cut the ratio in half next year in high-a, and maintained that at each level into the  major leagues, he would come up as a 24 year-old corner outfielder with Austin Jackson K/BB numbers.

Jury is still out on Turner and Oliver, as each has only had a cup of coffee (so it would be strange to already claim that rushing them ruined them).  Porcello has been solid (2 WAR/yr) and is now a healthy 23 yr old w/ 500 MLB IP…not a bad spot to be in.  Miller had a total of 37 games in the Tigers’ organization, so even if they rushed him, his failure to develop can’t be pinned on the Tigers.

I’ve also seen people mention Bonderman, but he developed into a very good pitcher before his arm blew out 6 years in.

It’s common to claim the Tigers ruin pitching prospects by rushing them, but the facts simply do not back up that assertion.

Theo knows by now what he can get for Garza, so he either keeps him like the Sox did with Danks or he trades him to the Tigers, Yanks, Marlins, or Sox.

A package around Turner is probably the best the Cubs will do, unless the Jays want to re-negotiate.
Theo and Jed have GOT to make DD include one of Smyly/Crosby and another high-end, fringe prospect farther away.

I find it interesting that Detroit fans find Matt Garza not worth 2 prospects yet they are willing to settle for the Joe Saunders, Paul Maholms, and Edwin Jacksons in the world. The difference will show up once they make the playoffs and then maybe a few of their more educated fans will understand the importance.

Sounds to me like you’re insinuating Gio Gonzalez is a better pitcher than Matt Garza, but that just can’t be. I mean unless you think he’s more valuable because he has two more years of team control. Even then a team with a payroll like Detroit shouldn’t be affected by that.

Detroit’s payroll is big, but NOT necessarily flexible (i.e. Illitch won;t increase it substantially unless he has VERY good reason to do so).  Acquiring either would involve a commitment to significantly raise the payroll in coming years (lots of young guys to keep around as well).

      Supply and demand.
It’s not realistic to get Castellanos AND Turner, but the Cubs hold the best available starter on the market.
      Someone will overpay.

Gio Gonzalez is a worse pitcher than Garza.

Four years of control vs two years is a big deal.

Turner, Iorge, Crosby and Garcia for Cain and Pill… Giants struggling to get 1 of their real good pitchers to resign means being proactive.

6’4 1st baseman trapped behind many Giants prospects — clobbered 25 HRs last year at AAA. Tigs have no use for 1st baseman/dh but could showcase him in ST and in early 2012 then spin him for something else. Of course the key get would be Cain; any other piece added by the Giants would be gravy.

Hesitant to deal top prospect, but if we can get Garza or Jurrjens for Turner and someone else not named Castellanos, then I think it would be a good trade for us. We’d be a all right-handed pitching staff, but a totally solid one!
