Orioles Acquire Steve Pearce, DFA Bill Hall

By Zachary Links | June 2, 2012 at 1:23pm CDT

The Orioles have acquired first baseman Steve Pearce from the Yankees and designated utility man Bill Hall for assignment, according to Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com (via Twitter).  The Yankees will receive cash considerations in return, tweets Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com.

Pearce, 29, signed a minor league deal with the Yanks in late March after spending the first seven seasons of his career with the Pirates.  In 52 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, Pearce hit .321/.422/.574 with eleven homers.

Hall, 32, was just added to the club's 25 and 40-man rosters yesterday after having his contract purchased.  The veteran was also DFA'd by the team on May 25th before clearing waivers.  Hall has a .221/.272/.372 slash line with three home runs in 21 Triple-A games this year.

Hahahaha.  Yankees win that deal.  Even $1 is worth more than Steve Pearce.  I’m so glad he isn’t still on the Pirates, how bad would our offense be then?

Really no worse than it already is.

Pearce never really got much of an extended shot with you guys.

He had a monster age 24 season and then didn’t hit much in his age 25 and 26 seasons at the big league level [but did hit well at AAA] in 119 and 186 plate appearances, respectively.

Looks like he got hurt for his age 27 [where he had a AAA slash line very similar to his monster 2007 season and his current 2012 slash line, and hit okay in a very small sample in the show] and 28 seasons.

He’s nothing more than a AAAA guy.  The closest he’ll ever come to a monster year at the MLB level is eating a big plate of cookies.

Oh, for sure he’s a AAAA guy?  So was Nelson Cruz.

It’s just a shame because Pearce cannot hit major league pitching. Witnessed enough of that in Pittsburgh the last few years.

I don’t know about that.  He was doing pretty well when he took over at 3rd last year and I think the injury roadblocked his career.  When he came back, he was meh.  I hope he adds some punch for the O’s and makes a nice comeback as a late bloomer.

The current Pirates cannot hit major league pitching either.

Here’s hoping Pearce stays healthy and gets some ABs instead of the sporadic chances he got with the Pirates.

Good move by the Yanks, they could use the money.

Memo to Bill Hall:  when you are getting DFA’d in favor of Steve Pearce, it might be time to consider your options for life after baseball.
