Nationals Notes: Strasburg, LaRoche

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | October 31, 2012 at 6:15pm CDT

The latest on the Nationals…

  • Stephen Strasburg hasn't yet qualified for arbitration, but that won't prevent him from earning a salary comparable to that of an accomplished first time eligible starter. Strasburg will earn $3.9MM in 2013, according to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post. The right-hander signed a record contract after the Nationals selected him first overall in 2009.
  • Adam LaRoche hasn’t been in contact with the Nationals about a possible contract extension in about a week, the free agent first baseman told Bill Ladson of MLB.com (Twitter link). Kilgore reported last week that the sides has established some parameters for a new deal.

I pray Laroche hits the market. I truly believe he would be an excellent fit in Boston for the next couple years.

Don’t have my hopes up though…

Remember when LaRoche was on the Red Sox back in ’09 for a week? Why did they think Casey Kotchman was the better 1B?

Just one of many really bad decisions after 07.

I highly doubt LaRoche is in D.C. next year.. Makes sense to allow for him to hit the market and move Morse out of the OF

Highly doubt is a little strong. LaRoche legitimately wants to stay in DC and the Nationals have a good deal of payroll flexibility.

I say highly doubt because I think LaRoche wants a multi-year deal and Rizzo would only be willing to give him 1 year. Though I suppose there could be a compromise, with a 1 year deal and a player option for the 2nd year.. Who knows? I wouldn’t be against having him with the team next year

Honestly, I’m pretty sure I’d rather see them trade Morse and re-sign LaRoche to play first.

It was more of a joke at how they are throwing lots of money around. That 3 years 48 mil would be in Dodgers ballpark, but no one else’s
