Astros, Padres “Gaining Steam” In Trade Talks; Houston Focused On Ross

By Steve Adams | July 29, 2015 at 7:30pm CDT

7:30pm: The Astros are more interested in Ross than they are in Cashner, tweets Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

6:01pm: The Astros and Padres appear to be making some headway when it comes to a trade involving some of San Diego’s pitching, reports Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle. One source told Drellich that things are “gaining steam,” though multiple people close to the situation told him that there’s nothing “in the red zone” just yet.

Drellich lists Craig Kimbrel, Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner as possible fits for the Astros, and it should also be noted that the Padres have reportedly been pushing to unload the remaining three and a half years on James Shields’ backloaded four-year, $75MM contract. ESPN’s Jayson Stark recently reported that rival teams expect the Padres to pull off some form of “huge” trade, though there’s nothing yet to indicate the magnitude of a potential swap between Houston and San Diego.

Houston is still interested in Cole Hamels, Drellich hears, but they don’t expect to acquire him. The Rangers are regarded as the favorite, Drellich writes, and all of these moving pieces could align to give us an indication as to what’s to come in the next two days. Not even an hour ago, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that talks between the Padres and Rangers regarding Cashner and Ross had cooled off. As Stark tweets, that may serve as another sign that Texas is the favorite for Hamels. It would make sense, then, to hear that the Rangers’ talks for Cashner and Ross have slowed just as the Astros’ talks with the Padres — perhaps for one of those two pitchers — are beginning to gain traction.

Perfect fit as trade partners. Sand Diego has everything Houston could ever want.

Except a decent farm, a winning record, and a strong business model.

Unless the Padres get Hader and Fisher or Moran in a deal for Ross id just wait till the off season to trade him. Or next years deadline if they’re out of it again. As a Padres fan I hope they’re in it, but we shall see.

Perfect partner for the Padres. Astros have a very good farm.

Is there any chance Phillips goes to the Padres if it’s Ross in the deal? Or a Ross/Kimbrel deal?

Philips is the best hitting prospect in the Astros system. i would imagine they move Aj Reed or Fisher over him. but..who knows. depends just how close the Astros are to get Hamels and if they would have to give up Phillips in that deal. – Astros move Vincent V. and a bats to SD maybe.

Doubtful Martin. Velasquez is probably on the table, along with Moran, Hader, Reed.

I wonder if the Astros pull a Padres and send a PTBNL (Bregman) plus to SD for Ross/kimbrel. SD seems really set on finding a SS. Houston will almost certainly need to include a top 3 prospect to get Ross. Unlikely but then again who would have predicted Tulo to Toronto.

I’d definitely be ok with a Upton/Ross/Kimbrel deal for Bregman, Hader, Reed, Moran, Fisher, Wojciechowski, and 1 of Appel or Velaquez.

Upton helps them now make a push for the playoffs while Kimbrel and Ross help in the next couple of years. I’d even be ok with SD sending cash to help reduce Kimbrel’s price tag to get those guys.

This could get interesting. SD has the pieces that Houston is missing, and the Astros are stacked with immense depth in the farm. The Stros could theoretically get 1 of Cashner/Ross AND Kimbrel for a hefty prospect package, and that still would leave the Astros with 1 of the deepest systems in the game. You have to think talks start with Appel/Velasquez and a couple bats from the 5-15 range. Maybe Velasquez, Reed, Fisher, and Davis?

I hope the Padres get at least Phillips/reed and kemp or Moran back if they trade Ross/kimbrel

Phillips should be untouchable. I love reed but if he helps nets up Ross/Kimbrel then he can go.

Reed is the first baseman the Astros have been looking for since Bagwell. Just can’t see them even thinking about losing the big bopper.

Root Sports Southwest is saying that Astros and Padres are close to a trade for Cashner and a reliever for Villar, Santana, JD Davis and Guduan(whoever he is).
