Yankees To Acquire Starlin Castro For Adam Warren, Brendan Ryan

By Steve Adams | December 8, 2015 at 7:10pm CDT

The Yankees and Cubs have agreed to a trade that will send Starlin Castro to New York, pending medical reviews.  The deal will also see right-hander Adam Warren and Brendan Ryan (listed as a player to be named later) heading to the Cubs.

Castro, 26 in March, is a three-time All-Star that struggled mightily for much of the 2015 campaign but had a strong finish to the season and an even better showing in the playoffs. Overall, Castro batted .265/.296/.375 last season, marking the second time in the past three seasons in which he’s delivered a well-below average output on offense. However, the 2014 campaign was excellent, as Castro batted .292/.339/.438 with 14 home runs. The Yankees will be counting on Castro to look more like his 2014 and the late-2015 versions of himself over the course of the next four seasons that remain on his contract.

A total of $38MM remains on the seven-year, $60MM contract extension Castro signed three years ago. With the Yankees, he will, presumably, step in as the everyday second baseman for the foreseeable future. His addition calls into question what the Yanks will do with incumbent second basemen Dustin Ackley and Rob Refsnyder, who had previously been slated to platoon in 2016. While one could remain on the roster as a utility option, it’s tough to envision the club keeping both players and Castro on the active roster next year.

Warren, 28, will give the Cubs a right-hander that was one of the more valuable swingmen in the game last season. The former fourth-round pick appeared in 43 games for the Yankees, making 17 starts and 26 relief appearances en route to a career-high 131 1/3 innings. In that time, Warren posted a 3.29 ERA with 7.1 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 and a 45.2 percent ground-ball rate. Those numbers are more or less commensurate with the production he delivered from 2013-14 while working almost exclusively out of the bullpen (101 relief appearances, two starts) and can be a reasonable expectation for him going forward. (If anything, one could perhaps forecast slightly better results due to the move to the National League.) He can be controlled for another three years in arbitration.

Ryan, 34 in March, exercised his $1MM player option this offseason. Ryan has not been terribly productive since coming to New York, taking just 289 plate appearances and compiling a poor .201/.244/.271 batting line over his three years with the team. Still, he is valued most for his glove and he can contribute at second base and in other infield roles.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter) and ESPN’s Buster Olney (on Twitter) first reported that Castro was New York-bound.  YES Network’s Jack Curry (Twitter link) reported that Adam Warren and a PTBNL were going to the Cubs.   Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweeted that the PTBNL was Brendan Ryan.  Photo courtesy of USA Today Sports Images.

I agree. A 25 year old, 3x All Star with almost 1000 hits for a less than top tier P and they keep Baez. Should have been Baez in this deal. And, they just over paid a 35 YO utility player, making sure that they don’t have enough left for Heyward.

There is such a thing called a cap. Ever heard of it? Signing Zobrist (who is an upgrade over Castro and isn’t an overpay, that’s actually the going rate for good players) made Castro’s contract a priority to move. Why pay $22 million for a starting infielder and his backup when you can cut $7 million and utilize a cheaper backup.

Great deal for NY. They can afford him, small salary dump of Ryan, Warren’s numbers will improve some in the NL and he’ll be a decent back end rotation piece for the Cubbies and most important? Yanks get a real second baseman for the 1st time since Cano left. Win-Win all around.

We dumped Castro to free up $$$$ for the next big sign we need more cash, that is the purpose of the trade not for the player. We don’t care, that is why the inked Zob,

Those player are in trade just to reduce the payroll, Cubs are going to hit the big one on Heyward but they needed to free up $$$, they don’t need need the damn players. Get it. Don’t ask me how I know, I know, what is in the pipe line next.

He got 1000 hits because he doesn’t take walks and he plays every day. Problem is, you’re supposed to get better and have more power as you enter your prime. This guy is 40 points less than his rookie year. .375 slugging is an 1980s SS number.

More and more depth trades by the Cubs.
Maybe they wanted to get rid of him because his productions been down
and he’s gained a lot of weight these past couple of seasons.

Would have liked to see more come back but
considering the fact that no one else was biting I guess this is okay.

This gives us the option of trading Kyle Hendricks as well so
this may mean that Hendricks and Baez may be in a package to get Miller or Teheran.

#Back end of a rotation guy.
That’s exactly what you call depth right?
Know that he’s legit but we do have 5 starters already.
And also bunch of long relief guys as well.
You can never have enough pitching so that’s why I said I’m fine with it.

#Hendricks projected to be better than Miller.
You can project all you want but a shaky guy that doesn’t last 7 innings
in my mind is not a starter on a WS winning team.
Miller is more consistent now and the Cubs want to win it now.

Side note : I like Teheran’s upside a bit more.

These NL people don’t get it. An AL starter with a low-3 ERA is a stud in the NL with their 8 man lineups. He’s not dominant but he’s a sub-3 ERA guy in the NL.

Do you have any understanding how a team’s place on a win curve changes what they value? They essentially just traded Castro for Zobrist in the lineup. They are competing this year, you can’t risk having a negative value Castro at second base again.

Steamer has Hendricks projected to be better than Miller. Why would you trade him + Baez ?

Would have liked more return here. Not terribly comfortable with Zobrist signing either at his age. It almost feels like the Cubs have developed the farm, now back to signing aging mediocre players to expensive deals. I am guessing the final move won’t be Hayward, and we should be content with Alex Gordon.

I honestly can’t understand why Cub fans are hating this trade–nor why Yankee fans are loving it. I’d be cautiously optimistic as a Yankee fan, but Castro looked lost for much of last year.

I wonder how many Cub fans howling about the Cubs selling low on Castro were ready to have the team outright cut him back in July?

As a Yankees fan, I definitely don’t love it. It’s a kissing your sister trade. I don’t love warren, I don’t care about Castro. what’s the upside, he hits 280 with 14 homers? Bah!

Thats a HUGE upside when you dont have a second basemen, Its not 1999, HR at second base are big deal. You got a 3 time 25 year old all star. This trade is impossible to see as anegative as a Yankee fan. Its an upgrade without losing much at all.

Not really. Refsynder can probably outhit him, and Castro is no gold glover. He’s not even a real 2nd baseman. .957 fielding pct, one of the worst in baseball.

He’s a vast improvement over what we got from our 2b last year. Even though I’m a Refsnyder fan it’s hard not to like this deal.

He’s young, a good glove to compliment Didi and the Yanks probably feel as if they can help him get back to being a decent hitter.

Good glove? He’s not even a 2nd basemen. Let’s move Tex over and say he’s “got a good glove”. Except he’s not a 2nd basemen.

Castro 18 errors in 109 games at SS. 6 errors in 38 games at 2nd. He’s worse than refsynder in terms of fielding pct.

I mistakenly used Fangraphs numbers assuming that when I filtered out 2b that his defensive metrics were while he played 2nd and not his overall which came out to a +5. That being said, they had him at a -0.8. To me…not bad. He was playing out of position. A full spring training and offseason to work on his glove at 2b can be a difference. Regardless, he graded out better than most of the options via FA as he was better defensively than Kendrick, Murphy, K. Johnson, Utley and Zobrist at 2b. Also, playing alongside Didi can help too.

Not mad at this deal. He’s not a huge financial burden, doesn’t have a no-trade clause and is still very young. Girardi might be able to coax better results out of him. Playing with vet players might help too. At the end of the day, while I like Adam Warren very much, we didn’t give up a lot to get him.

I’m also a fan of Refsnyder and wish he had been given a chance but I like the fact they went after a possible long term solution that has all-star pedigree vs going after another Drew or K. Johnson type.

NY got a player with a MUCH higher ceiling for basically money. Warren will be a productive #5 starter, but that is a risk you take any day for the higher upside. That’s why the yankees win this trade.

Well, time tells who wins the trade, of course. Declaring a winner today is a tad premature.

Sure, Castro has the higher ceiling, but he was also responsible for some of the most inexcusable lapses in the field last year. It seemed to take all of Maddon’s magic powers to pull himself out of his own head.

Warren fits with the Cubs’ philosophy of having a bevy of potential starters. If he continues to pitch like he has for the Yanks for the last couple of years, he will be very valuable.

I think labeling Castro’s lapses in the field as “inexcusable” is just a tad premature as well. Let’s not forget he’s only 25. The only scenario I see the Cubs outright winning this trade is if Warren develops into a #3 starter or better. Otherwise he’s just another 5th starter/long arm and the Yankees have plenty of those.

The team that gets the better performance wins the trade, not the team that gets the most “upside” (which is an overused concept). Cubs get a pitcher who has been extremely productive in a hitter’s park and tough division, putting up over 5 WAR in less than 300 innings. Yanks get a player who’s been awful in 2 of the last 3 years. His BB/K rate is extremely poor for a hitter with limited power and has not improved at all in his 6 years in the majors. When a guy has to rely on a .340 BABIP to have a good offensive year, I don’t see much upside there, I don’t care how he produced when he was 21, as if that means anything still after 2 very poor seasons in the last 3 years when he should’ve already been realizing his supposed upside.

All the idiotic Cub fans are finally coming out after making the playoffs. Did the Cubs undersell Castro? Yes. But no team is going to take him when they know how desperate they are to get rid of a middle infielder. Also it makes more sense to drop Castro instead of Baez with Zobrist coming in.

Zobrist provides more versatility and is a consistently better hitter. I’m sure most of you hopped off the Castro bandwagon after last year but because he has a good second half, you all assume that Castro’s value has skyrocketed. Did it restore itself? Yes, but expecting a major haul for him is unrealistic after he went a season and half playing terribly.

And Zobrist isn’t an overpay. At $14 million, that’s actually a good deal. Just because YOU think he should be paid less doesn’t mean that is the actual rate. If other teams were willing to pay around the same rate, that’s called market value. Also Zobrist had a 2.1 WAR last year. 1.0 WAR is valued at $8 million a year. So the Cubs actually got him for less then he is worth.

I have had it with these dopes quoting WAR stats. It is all just hypothetical nonsense stats. 8 million for each point of WAR really? I guess a lot of players should be making over 50 million a year then? So ridiculous.

Technically, yes. But what do you want to judge a player’s value off of? AVG/OBP/SLG, HR, RBIs are effective but don’t tell the whole story. In case you didn’t know WAR is Wins Above Replacement, meaning this player provides “x” amount of wins over a league average player. It’s not a hypothetical nonsense stat that is quoted by dopes. I mean if you don’t want to follow it, go right ahead, but its widely considered to be one of the most effective stats at judging a player’s value.

Adam Warren is a great pitcher and getting better. He can start; he can relieve long; he can relieve short and he can close. He maintains high SO with low BB.
It is obvious that the Yankees are desperate for middle IFs. Starlin Castro once had some good offensive numbers but has never been a very good Baseball player.

I think it’s more about what he does defensively. I also think that it wouldn’t take a tremendous amount of improvement for Castro to become a solid hitter. I think they saw the improvement they were able to coax out of Didi and feel that even a marginal .265/.320/.400 line, coupled with his glove would make him a bargain.

I’ve always liked Warren, even before his mlb debut. I felt he’s the kind of “under the radar” late round draft picks the Yanks have excelled at discovering. Although he played a valuable role for the Yankees the last couple of years I trust the Yanks to find a suitable replacement since they’ve stockpiled a lot of hard throwing late round picks.

Part of me also wanted to see Refsnyder get a shot at 2nd base last year as I love his offensive potential.

That being said, Castro was a top 5 defensive 2nd basement last year and that alone, coupled with his youth and ability makes it worthwhile. He’s not cheap but if the Yanks can coax a .265/.320 BA/OBP, some speed and his glova holds up then it’s a great deal for us.

A middle infield of Didi and Sterling should be exciting and help our pitching staff immensely.

I like this for both sides. Castro still has potential and is young but has always been lazy on bases and in the field. A low risk high reward for yanks. As for Cubs they basically trade Castro for Zobrist and a solid controllable arm in warren. It also allows them to sign another FA if they choose. I doubt either of these teams are done making moves.

Who ever not traded from Niese/Montero holds 5th spot till Wheeler is ready and any of the SS/MI, wether Flores,Tejada or Reynolds is a better value than Brendan Ryan….jeeez… The Yankees stole Castro. Big ups to Cashman for real. Niese and Flores for Castro, Niese and Tejada for Castro, Montero and Flores or Tejada for Castro…. He killed Cubs pitchers all season long. His defense is below average and getting worse every year. His bat has been average last few years. Zobrist will be good leadership for young Cubs team and will improved Cubs line up. Zobrist came up big hits for K.C. Royals during playoffs that Castro never will. Cubs started winning when Castro was benched and Russell took over SS.
Zorbrist maybe old but his heart and desire for the game is Castro is lack of. Castro mind is always somewhere during the game.

Yes Castro might have hit for a better average for his career but
