Jacob deGrom Shut Down For Season, Likely To Undergo Right Elbow Surgery

By Mark Polishuk | September 17, 2016 at 3:19pm CDT

The Mets have shut down Jacob deGrom for the remainder of the 2016 season, GM Sandy Alderson told reporters (including MLB.com’s Barry W. Bloom).  DeGrom will likely undergo surgery on his right ulnar nerve, though Alderson didn’t consider the surgery to be too serious in nature (via ESPN.com’s Adam Rubin).

DeGrom has been bothered by forearm and elbow soreness for the last two weeks and hasn’t pitched since September 1.  He was tentatively scheduled to start tomorrow and went through a successful bullpen session on Friday, though after deGrom felt pain while shagging fly balls, it isn’t any surprise that the club chose to shut down the 28-year-old.  Since surgery isn’t confirmed yet, Alderson didn’t provide any timeline, though Rubin notes that the general recovery period seems to range from three to six months.

Needless to say, losing deGrom is a big blow to the Mets’ postseason chances.  The right-hander has continued to post good results in his third MLB season, with a 3.04 ERA, 8.7 K/9, 2.19 BB/9 and 45.6% grounder rate over 148 innings.  DeGrom had suffered a loss of velocity over his last couple of starts, which is quite likely related to his injury.

The Mets roster has been plagued by injuries to major names all season, and yet the team is still hanging steady in the postseason race, beginning the day with a two-game lead on the Cardinals for the final NL wild card slot.  The Mets have won nine of their last 12 games thanks to unexpected contributors like young righties Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo, who may now be tasked with playoff starts should New York get past the wild card game.  Steven Matz could possibly still be a factor, though he is facing his own health problems in the form of a shoulder injury and bone spurs in his elbow.

Yes, the Dodgers set a record for most DL guys in a year this year, which included 4/5ths of the starting staff, a number of replacements to that starting staff, and the best pitcher in baseball. Can sticki and I split the 100 mil?

They honestly believed they could replicate last season’s success without much depth…..

Without much depth? Seriously? The first half of the year was all about “who goes to the pen when Wheeler is back”…

Yeah, the team in the WC lead despite having their entire team go on the DL at some point has no depth. Sounds about right.

Did the Dodgers have a single starting position player go on the DL? They seemed to pencil in their starting 8 every single day, the Mets have had every starting position player besides Granderson spend time on the DL. Most of it significant. They spent like weeks with their entire starting infield on the DL. And that’s in addition to the pitching injuries which now seem to be a part of the game.

Actually I think Bartolo is great, He’s competitive, works hard, has fun, and seems to be a great team mate. He’s 43 yrs old and only uses basic pitches and when his team mates get him runs he wins I think it’s great and I’m not even a METS fan.

Stinks for him and the Mets. On the bright side, they weren’t making a push like last year anyways. So maybe he can get healthy, and their whole staff can be healthy, and they can try again next year for a wildcard. Not beating the Nats next year either.

They’re currently 2 up on the cardinals for the second WC spot so to say they’re not making a run is just wrong. Granted, this stings, but if the season ended today they’d be in the playoffs.

Pulse and Wilson were garbage. Ironic that people posting on a site where baseball data is readily available would compare those players to the current Mets pitchers.

I said last year that the Mets over used their young pitchers and arm problems were likely. Now Harvey, deGrom, Matz, Wheeler, and Syndergaard all have arm problems. This compares with the Giants with their runs to the world series, first it was Lincecum, then Cain going down. There is a fine line with young pitchers and nobody seems to know the right formula to keeping them healthy these days.

Newcombe (DODGERS) is always preaching forget all the weight lifting…Do only muscle conditioning. The best and most IMPORTANT thing a pitcher should do is “RUN”; He says that all the guys (pitchers & players) in the “old” days RAN, no weight lifting, too much bulk can cause it’s own problems. Also since I don’t want to JINX the best pitcher in the world you’ll notice he’s not a body builder! They didn’t have pitch counts or inning limits. They completed lots of games a season. Look at Koufax.

Koufax retired because of arm issues at like 30 years old.
