NL Notes: Otani, Dodgers, Mets, Phillies

By Connor Byrne | August 20, 2017 at 4:37pm CDT

Eight members of the Dodgers organization, including president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, were in Japan on Sunday to watch Nippon Ham Fighters star Shohei Otani, according to a report from Sponichi (translation courtesy of Kazuto Yamazaki of Beyond the Box Score, on Twitter). The two-way standout threw a 58-pitch bullpen session before the game and then reached base in all four plate appearances during the contest, going 3 for 3 with a walk. Otani, 23, figures to be the most sought-after free agent available if he decides to immigrate to the majors in the offseason. The Dodgers seem likely to pursue him, but the international spending limits in the new collective bargaining agreement will prevent the big-spending franchise from steamrolling the competition with a massive offer. In fact, the Dodgers aren’t allowed to give out a bonus exceeding $300K to an international prospect in the 2017-18 signing period.

  • Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is a near certainty to return in 2018, but manager Terry Collins’ exit seems like a mere formality, David Lennon of Newsday suggests. While the Alderson-built Mets have been among the majors’ most obvious letdowns this season, the spate of injuries they’ve dealt with has likely given him some leeway, Lennon notes. One prominent Met who hasn’t played at all this year is third baseman and captain David Wright, whom neck, shoulder and back issues have limited to 75 games since 2015. The $47MM owed to Wright through 2020, including $20MM next season, could serve as a hindrance to Alderson during the upcoming winter as he tries to reshape the roster and make the team into a contender again, Lennon observes. While the Mets could recoup 75 percent of Wright’s money via insurance if he’s unable to play, Alderson has to operate as if the seven-time All-Star will return. The Mets’ third base situation without Wright this year hasn’t been ideal, which Alderson acknowledged. “We don’t have an everyday top-shelf third base option the way some teams do. Not that we have played terribly at third base. But we didn’t go into the season with a solidified situation in part because we’re not sure what David’s condition would be,” Alderson said. “Now, as we go into 2018, do we build on what we learned in 2017 and act accordingly and consider moving David to another position, that sort of thing? That’s all something that has to be evaluated as we get into the offseason.”
  • Given that they’ll need to add him to their 40-man roster over the winter, a promotion could come this year for Phillies shortstop prospect J.P. Crawford when Triple-A Lehigh Valley’s season ends, Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes. If the Phillies do call up Crawford, he could see time at second and third base initially, assistant general manager Ned Rice told Gelb. Crawford lined up at third base Sunday, making it the first time he has played a position other than short in the minors. The Phillies still regard Crawford as a long-term shortstop, but incumbent Freddy Galvis is vying for a 162-game season there. Meanwhile, Maikel Franco is in the midst of a disappointing season, so he’s a candidate to cede playing time to Crawford. The 22-year-old topped out as Baseball America’s sixth-best prospect after the 2015 season, but he’s just 92nd on the outlet’s latest list. Crawford has improved his Triple-A output since last season’s unspectacular showing, though, having batted .242/.349/.406 with 13 home runs and 68 unintentional walks against 84 strikeouts in 485 plate appearances.

He could get a medical retirement like Prince Fielder if he’s unable to play, and still receive that $47 million, and then the Mets would recoup that money.

Wright will not forfeit any of the money if he decided to retire…he’s got more than enough evidence that he can no longer medically play baseball. He WANTS to keep playing, and that is his decision. These things happen when you sign players to long-term deals.

Dig a little deeper and it looks a lot worse. For instance, Wright’s money is dead money that they can pocket 75% each season bc of insurance. That “extra” spending they did to get to 15th has been slashed and their 2018 payroll will likely be bottom 1/3 of the league again. Look at their total payroll each year since Bernie Madoff scandal (adjusted for inflation) and it paints a far uglier picture when you consider they are in the largest media market and their “peer” clubs include KC and not LAD/CHI/etc. They re-signed Cespedes…but after giving up Fulmer they basically had to or else they’d lose him to their arch rivals Nats. All of the penny pinching has occurred before and after that deal bc that is the Wilpon M.O.

The Mets are in great shape if they make a couple of decent moves in the offseason. Lorenzo Cain makes almost too much sense for them, and signing a reliable starter and figuring out catcher could put them right back in contending condition.

Conforto, Cain, Cespedes in the outfield. Flores/TJ Rivera, Rosario, Cabrera (or maybe sign Walker), and Dom Smith is a very good lineup.

The Mets would be in fantastic “shape” if the Wilpons were forced out.

New York is the largest market in MLB. NYC is shared by two teams that once was a three team market and everyone who has analyzed the market believes NYC could again support three teams.

Fred and Jeff Wilpon will bank at least $150 million after taxes this year as they have done for many years in a row.

How do you figure that? Do you know their finances that well? Their payroll tops $150M, they’ve got a billion dollar stadium they’re financing, as well as other operating expenses. While they will make money, I doubt they’re banking $150M, before or after taxes.

It’s typical “pro sports” accounting. Maybe net is shuffled around, but I believe in the Wilpon’s case SNY is the cash cow, and they split that money with (I forget the split) and it isn’t reflected under team revenue.

They had injuries last year and made the Wild Card..that’s definitely contending. 2015 World Series was part of that three years and they had injuries…ultimate contending.

Moving JP Crawford off of shortstop, even for a small sample size, is just another reason this Phillies FO isn’t a very good one. You have Freddy Galvis, who is historically a utility man, and below average offensively and defensively this year, yet you choose to move your top prospect off of his natural position even for a brief period so he can “get ABs.” Well.. Galvis is terrible and is going to cost about 6-7M this offseason to retain, and JPC has a .940 OPS over his last 56 games,
It just makes no sense. It makes the same amount of sense as moving Hoskins to LF for Joseph who has been one of the worst everyday players in baseball this year.

Under no circumstances am i about to say Crawford should replace Galvis next season when Franco has been awful and They could just move Crawford to third.

John Middleton doesn’t think Japanese players are worth what they cost. I strongly suspect Middleton doesn’t think Asian players are………well, I don’t have evidence I can present so I won’t finish the thought.

I will write this though: The Philly media has never recognized the availability of Japanese talent.

    Never.

When Masahiro Tanaka was available I chin checked Phillies postgame TV host and radio personality Mike Missanelli via Twitter for leaving Tanaka off his free agent pitcher list that year on the Sunday postgame TV show.

Mike Missanelli responded by putting the list up the following Sunday postgame and adding more names to it, but leaving Tanaka off and unmentioned.

Given that Shohei Otani grew up idolizing Yu Darvish (Otani wears the same number 11 for Darvish’s old ballclub, the Nippon Ham Fighters, and has a similar pitching delivery), it will be interesting to see if the Dodgers make a push to re-sign Darvish and sign Otani to have the two play together.

With the Dodgers not being able to sign any international free agent for more than $300k during this signing period, one would have to think that it would almost guarantee they would be out of the running for Otani. Being that they are an NL club would also seem to put them at another disadvantage considering he has said if/when he comes to the MLB, he wants to be a 2-way player.

because if the Dodgers offer to do that before he’s under contract it’s a naked attempt to circumvent the CBA in egregious way the other owners would never stand for… and the penalty for that can literally be forcing the Dodgers ownership out of the league…. on top other unpleasantries such as the commissioner’s office refusing to approve the deal, voiding Otani’s contract with the Dodgers, nuking their future IFA allotments, taking away draft picks, etc.

The Dodgers can’t offer what you’re suggesting to get him to come to MLB. And i highly suspect 300K would not be the best offer on the table.

Teams exposed the previous International Signing and paid the luxury tax. Your idea on that punishment is far too extreme for a club making MLB hundreds of millions yearly. Otani himself by being on a ML team will make MLB millions. The rule in place could force that to not happen for 2years. It’d be a bad, bad move by MLB to keep Otani overseas and away from US soil if hes the talent as advertised.

Yes, it could end up being way too much, but that’s not really the point. The point is that based on his age, scouting reports, and succeas overseas, that is a horrible contract for him to get locked into. It’s nowhere near enough money for him to give up most of his “prime” years. If you want him to sign that cheaply, you need to give him a chance at a second big contract, which is MUCH more unlikely after he’s 30 (when the 7 yr deal would be up). Hence the reason I said there would need to be an opt out after his age 25 season or whenever. In reality, it could be after 4 years (age 27) or something like that, but I was just making a point that it’s not enough money for him to sign that long of a commitment.

Essentially the league put specific language in the new CBA to try and prevent a handshake deal. Meaning the team that does this is basically throwing a middle finger to the league. Teams would be outraged, rightfully so, if that were to happen. That investigation probably won’t be to pretty. But basically I could see the Example from the nba and red soxs where the contract isn’t allowed and he then becomes an FA unable to sign with the team that attempted to allude the CBA. Which why then would the players union care, because he’s essentially be able to obtain market value.

Ryu was posted for his age 26 season after seven pro seasons in Korea and placed immediately into service in the majors. Not sure what that says for Otani, who be 23 if posted this offseason with five pro seasons in Japan but I would think any team that pays the freight for him will want to know what they are getting and how they will use this unusual player before committing the money. That’s the reason for the heavy scouting.

I don’t see the NL being an unnatural place for Otani. I doubt any MLB team would want him batting and running the bases even as a DH every day or even most days between starts. The NL is the more natural home for pitchers who can also hit. Doubtful that his hitting in Japan will translate to the MLB anyway.

Ichiro’s game in Japan was power but that didn’t translate to MLB. What did was slap hitting with speed. Otani also advertises power in his game in Japan, but apparently without the base path speed. He could easily be no better than an average hitter over here, which for a pitcher (in the NL at least) is valuable, but not so much on a daily basis. In any case the real impediment to him being a true two-way player in MLB is the problem of him being in the lineup between starts. I’d be shocked if any AL team made that kind of promise to him. They’re going to carry one or two more suitable DHs.

The hard cap for signings make the money for Otani basically inconsequential in the big picture. Others can offer him what, $3 million more? He’ll probably make that up in endorsement money in the first year if he picks the Dodgers or Yankees who are the big two as far as Japanese interest is concerned.

Ottani basically chooses where he wants to go. The 300K isn’t necessarily consequential, because he’d make by far more money staying in Japan and already has his Japanese endorsements. So he’s already made pretty good money. If he wanted to he could honestly wait two years and sign whatever deal he wants. Basically the cap does nothing for a guy like Ottani. In a sense it actually hurts small market teams. But then again the cap wasn’t really an attempt to help any team besides the owners.

He’s going to go to whichever team/ city suits him best because there’s not really a major need for his bonus, unlike regular ifa’s. That being said I have this sneaking suspicion he’s going to end up in Seattle, but regardless there is going to be an AL team that guarantees him his ABs. He’d honestly be to cheap and talented not to. That’s probably going to be more important than the signing bonus.

homerism is the only realistic explanation for such a fantasy

If Otani really wanted to play in LA badly enough to leave a few million on the table, He could just wait another (well paid) season in Japan then he’s a true free agent and can sign in LA for a lot more.

Ohtani looks to be the piece the Yanks need to be a top contender for years to come, they will make him a good offer. He could DH when he doesn’t pitch.

Another year of Alderson might spell the end of the line for me. You lose interest without even realizing it. Why don’t the Wilpons realize that now is a perfect time for change.

Alderson must have photos of the Wilpons doing some really heinous things. That’s the only explanation for him still having a job. He’s pathetically incompetent at what he does.

Sandy had had all sorts of salary restrictions, so he has been very limited in what he can do. He has been very suspect in FA signings (e.g Cuddyer waaaay early in the off-season) and his lack of changes this past off season were my two biggest gripes of his time w the Mets.

OTANI doesn’t care about $5mil or $300k signing bonus…he is going to play for minimum $535k anyway 1st yr..(he ain’t spending a minute in minors)… And after rookie campaign he likely signs a God like extensions buying him off of arb 1-3 + 2yrs or so of FA..so right around 6 or 7yr deal..probably in the $120-$140+ million range if he is as good as advertise…

Every team will be IN on him with LAD..Rangers ..SF..Seattle and (yes) Padres probably the early favorites … Pads are a big time sleeper here..Yu’s former right hand man was hired by SD and SD has a working relationship and friendship with Otani’s Japanese club… Not to mention AJ Preller has visited (with others) OTANI a few times within the last 2 yrs…Pads will have a very low payroll a loaded farm and a youthful roster growing together..watch them closely as sleepers on this deal..besides they may be 1 of just a couple NL teams that give OTANI a “dual” role as he has said he wants regular playing time when not P…LAD can’t really offer that with their lineup.. AL teams likely won’t allow him to play anywhere but DH on occasion a low key guy OTANI might feel at ease in SD and be allowed to play LF or 1B on a regular enough basis to convince him to sign with them….food for thought

Good thing you aren’t a GM. Otani seems like he would be a lock to be a super 2 player. Otani would be on his rookie deal for 3 years and then go through arb 3 times. Let’s say he’s as good as advertised….maybe he makes $45M during those 3 arb years. For his career he would be at 6 years and roughly $46.5M. Your proposed contract would pay him at least $120M for those years. If a team signed him to an extension immediately after his 1st season they would probably try for a 7 year deal which would cover the 2 remaining rookie years, 3 arb years, and 2 FA years. At that point you’re looking at maybe $46M for the team control years and $60M for the 2 FA years.

Except, Otani could be a two-way Star as pitcher/hitter, blowing away that thought process of a typical Arb raises. Was it Price? Who made about 18mil? His final go in year to year Arb raises? Add the additional batting positives, he may be on an additional 10mil say on that side at that time. Now I know I’ve read the hit tool is suggested he wont be a big bat, but you wont know til he plays here. He is such an interesting case.

Otani will be a Ranger, where he’ll be their ace as opposed to a number 3-4 with the Dodgers.

I doubt he would sign with a team just so he could be their “ace”. If all he wants is to be in the MLB then he’ll go wherever he feels the most comfortable. If he wants money then he’ll go to a team like LA or NYY where he will make a ton in endorsements.

Doesn’t matter because the signing bonus money goes to the following year. The Braves are still restricted on spend over 300k on a player during the 2017 offseason. The Braves would need to “woo” him just like all the other teams on the 300k restriction.

I know Im a little late on joining the discussion but in regard to the Mets, everything really hinges on their rotation being healthy. Long term, the 1-2 punch of Thor and deGrom is enviable but behind that is really just uncertainty. I don’t believe any of Matz Wheeler or Harvey can be effective rotation options long term due to performance and injury problems. I would consider moving the former two to the bullpen.
The Mets need to sign 1 or 2 innings eaters who can give them 180 innings of 4.30 or better ball. Just a thought, but Josh Tomlin’s peripherals suggest he’s been better than his numbers show and he has a club option worth $3 million that could very well be declined. If Im Sandy, Im looking into that. Also- Miguel Gonzalez makes sense as well.

just getting around to commenting about this article, so a little late. Article indicates that Otani will be a free agent, but I thought he had one more year of NPB service to complete before free agency? Remember reading somewhere a few months ago that his current team was considering “posting” him which is different than free agency.

Otani will likely go to the team his representatives find as the best combination of financial responsibility and on-field success.

That could get him in a few titles, which would make the signing bonus acceptable.

Does Otani nibble, avoid contact or pitch backwards? If so, we pass.
