Rockies Notes: Davis, Bridich, Holland, Arenado, Harrison

By Mark Polishuk | December 30, 2017 at 6:11pm CDT

The signings of Wade Davis, Bryan Shaw, and Jake McGee have given the Rockies a deep and experienced relief corps, though ESPN.com’s Keith Law (Insider subscription required and recommended) wonders if the team needed to go to such expensive lengths to reinforce its bullpen.  Other teams who have relied on excellent pens in recent seasons, Law notes, have generally used their own homegrown arms or low-cost converted starters as relievers rather than sign several pricey free agents.  Law also isn’t a fan of the three-year, $52MM Davis contract in general, citing Davis’ injuries and dip in performance over the last two seasons from his 2014-15 dominance.

Here’s more on the Rockies from GM Jeff Bridich’s chat with reporters (including MLB.com’s Thomas Harding and the Denver Post’s Nick Groke) on Friday…

  • Despite the mutual interest between Colorado and former closer Greg Holland, the two sides weren’t able to reach agreement on a reunion, with Bridich saying two weeks ago that the team had made Holland a “strong offer” to re-sign.  It seems as if the Rockies then made a swift pivot to Davis, as while Davis and the team had been linked earlier this winter, Bridich said the deal was made just within the last week.
  • After so heavily remaking the bullpen, the Rockies are likely done with pitching additions altogether.  “I’d be very surprised if we added another reliever or a starter,” Bridich said.
  • The next step would seem to be addressing needs in the corner outfield or at first base.  In Harding’s words, Bridich was “open, but non-committal” about the idea of re-signing Carlos Gonzalez, with the GM simply noting that Gonzalez was “part of the market.”
  • While Bridich didn’t put a timetable on extension talks with Nolan Arenado, “there definitely are conversations that will happen” about locking up the star third baseman.  Teams generally wait until Spring Training or until significant offseason business has been concluded to discuss extensions with their players, and the negotiations with Arenado will no doubt be particularly in-depth given the huge money needed to keep him at Coors Field.  Arenado is scheduled to hit free agency after the 2019 season, when he’ll still just be 28 years old and in the midst of his prime.  Arenado and the Rockies agreed to a two-year, $29.5MM deal last offseason to cover two arbitration years, and Arenado has one final arb-eligible season remaining in 2019 due to his Super Two status.
  • “I’m not sure where the Josh Harrison stuff comes from,” Bridich said in regards to rumors connecting the Rockies to the versatile Pirates infielder/outfielder.  It should be noted that this isn’t technically a denial of any trade interest, though Harrison is perhaps a better fit on a team that could make fuller use of his multi-positional ability.  The Rockies have Arenado and DJ LeMahieu locked in at third and second base, respectively, so Harrison would spend most of his time as a corner outfielder if he did land on Colorado’s roster.  (Then again, given that the Rox did sign Ian Desmond last winter with the intent of using him as a first baseman, maybe we shouldn’t rule out any outside-the-box ideas in regards to this team.)

I’m a fan of Keith Law, but when a pitcher goes from having mlb record years and declines to just simply elite seasons, I’d be more than happy to pay him and not worry about him “declining”

Where does this come from? Law is a highly respected scout in the industry and outside of it and I don’t know what his political persuasion – he’s more libertarian than liberal anyway – has to do with anything.

I have no idea where the politics comes from either, but Law is not respected in the industry. He was more or less drummed out of it and is a laughingstock in front offices

        Law isn’t:

        A.) A scout
        Or
B.) Highly respected in the industry

Law does attempt to cover all teams, but does seem to not like several in his coverage, just like another in Heyman.

Both do cover all teams and seem to want respect among front offices and fan bases for their coverage “fairly” for what they do, but the coverage of all in some cases is not.

I can throw an example out.. peter gammons, who many here and all around do not care for never did cover all teams, yet is respected by front offices and mainly focuses on 1 team, or 1 division. mainly.

Law and a few others perhaps possibly should take that cue and learn from a HOF writer.

If you listen to other GM’s when his name is referenced, they just gloss over him and move on. He is one of the least respected sports writer in baseball. He is one of the most loathed in the game. His analytics are a joke amongst insiders.

The above comment about Law’s politics is beyond dumb and pointless, but it’s not correct to say that Law is respected all over. Don’t know the guy personally, but he definitely has been bad at evaluating prospects often and he comes across overly confident in said evaluating. No expects these guys to right all the time, but a little humility in delivery can go long way.

I and many care what Keith Law has to say. You certainly don’t speak for me nor others.

And I totally agree with Keith Law – Wade Davis is very risky signing, really faded in the postseason. His stuff lacked bite. Rockies would have been better off with Holland reunion..

Law isn’t a scout but an analyst.

I haven’t offered an opinion of his overall body of work, but have offered a willingness to read his comments and agree or disagree based on my own research, assessment, observation of the involved player or players.

Wow, have we really come to the point as a society where we’re using people’s political affiliation as evidence that they’re bad baseball insiders? Curt Schilling is nuttier than squirrel turds politically, but that doesn’t have anything to do with whether or not I liked him as a baseball analyst.

As a Royals fan, I was totally fine trading Wader even though I loved having him because he was not the same pitcher. Watch him every day it’s not just reverting to the mean, his stuff absolutely changed. In ‘14 and ‘15 he could go out there and tell the hitter what was coming and still blow it by him. His slider didn’t have the same bite and his fastball didn’t have the same run to it, he missed spots regularly. He spent time on the DL with “elbow soreness” and “dead arm” and even a flexor strain. If you follow baseball injuries you know that a loss of command, decreased stuff and those particular ailments are pretty reliable predictors for a trip to see Dr James Andrews. I would be willing to bet Wade has TJ before the end of that contract.

Seriously dude, baseball is awesome in part because we can disagree and argue and prove each other wrong about something that has nothing to do with politics. I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of talking about it. No matter what you believe, the present situation is humiliating for everyone. Why would you want to bring it here?

Very off topic – Can someone shed some light on why the Giants didn’t go after KK in the Longo trade? It seems like he fits the bill of speed, slight lefty power, plus (very) defender, and cheap.

I doubt the Giants have the prospects to get Kiermeier. He’s really valuable, much more valuable than Longoria. I doubt Tampa Bay would move Kiermeier except for a serious haul.

There is no “Rays untouchables”. It comes down to if someone will give them value that they think works for them. Personally, I think their valuation skills are a shell of what they were in the Friedman era, so GMs could do some good fleecing IMHO.

I agree about Kiermaier going nowhere. Would it have made sense for the Giants to have targeted Mallex Smith instead, or are his upside and future years of control too valuable to TB for the Rays FO to have included him in an expanded version of the Longoria trade?

Well look to the Orioles bullpen for the past couple of years, they were cobbled together at a relative low cost.
The thing is the Rockies bullpen was the weakest link and now it should be formidable
If their offense holds together this upcoming year, they should be good.

PS I wish the O’s and Rockies could get together for a trade involving Gausman (O’s) and Rodgers (Rockies).

While COL may not have had to spend so much on their bullpen needs, I suspect the Rockies FO does have to pay a significant premium even on rebound candidates and other low-cost relief options to convince them Coors Field won’t destroy them or their future earning potential.

This doesn’t get nearly as much attention as it should, but yeah, you’re right, Colorado really can’t hit all that well. 1B, the corner outfield, and arguably catcher are pretty bad positions for them right now, and they haven’t done anything to address their offense beyond Iannetta

…. to “flip him” ……. haha

Holland is going to get burned by Boras, should have taken Rockies offer. The Rocks have McMahon who is going to play somewhere, although I look for them to sign a 1b or OF yet. Would have preferred they signed Lucroy instead of Ianetta.
