With J.D. Martinez heading to Boston, the Red Sox are facing somewhat of a roster crunch, writes Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston. It is not, however, at first base as many have suggested. Manager Alex Cora suggested Tuesday that he views Hanley Ramirez as his No. 3 hitter and primary first baseman, even though the team re-upped Mitch Moreland on a two-year deal this winter. As Drellich points out, though, each of Moreland, Ramirez and Martinez have dealt with injury issues in recent years, so Moreland still figures to get his share of at-bats.
Rather, Drellich observes, the bigger crunch will be on the bench. Sandy Leon is the favorite to serve as the backup catcher, and one of Moreland or Ramirez will be on the bench most days. The Sox have two out-of-options players in Deven Marrero and Blake Swihart that are current bench options, but they also have Brock Holt who agreed to a $2.2MM arbitration salary earlier this winter. That deal, like the vast majority of arb deals, is non-guaranteed, but Holt’s versatility has been valuable for the Sox in recent seasons and he seems unlikely to be cut loose. Holt does have minor league options remaining, though obviously paying him to play in Triple-A is suboptimal as well.
A bit more on the Sox and their division…
- The Red Sox are unlikely to trade Jackie Bradley after signing J.D. Martinez this week, tweets MLB.com’s Jon Morosi. That’s not much of a surprise, as Bradley’s name hasn’t come up on the rumor circuit much in recent months, and the trio of Bradley, Andrew Benintendi and Mookie Betts should be among the best defensive outfield units in all of baseball.
- The Blue Jays are still seeking upgrades after last week’s signing of lefty Jaime Garcia to round out the rotation, and GM Ross Atkins suggested to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet that there’s a strong likelihood that they’ll make a move before Opening Day (Twitter links). Atkins somewhat candidly said he felt there’s about a 90 percent chance the Jays have another addition in store, citing a reliever as the likeliest pickup. Notably, Atkins added that improving at backup catcher, where light-hitting Luke Maile projects as the reserve behind Russell Martin, “is less likely at this point.”
- Troy Tulowitzki is making progress from last year’s ankle injury, which included torn ligaments in his foot as well as a compression factor, writes Nicholson-Smith in a full column. However, he has yet to begin running this spring. Tulowitzki’s goal is to be ready for Opening Day, though the 33-year-old veteran said he’s not putting any timelines on his recovery and won’t risk a setback by pushing himself too far. He fielded grounders thrown to him by the coaching staff today, though the drills “weren’t designed to test his range too much” just yet, per Nicholson-Smith. Even if Tulo isn’t ready for Opening Day, the Blue Jays are much better prepared from a depth vantage point up the middle, where they’ll have offseason trade acquisitions Yangervis Solarte and Aledmys Diaz backing up Tulowitzki and Devon Travis.
- Following the trade of Jake Odorizzi to the Twins, the Rays plan to use a four-man rotation of Chris Archer, Nathan Eovaldi, Jake Faria and Blake Snell for the first six weeks of the season or so, manager Kevin Cash tells Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The increased amount of off-days in the schedule this year due to the season’s earlier start will allow the club to use fifth starter Matt Andriese as a multi-inning reliever. The Rays, unsurprisingly, plan to keep top prospects like Brent Honeywell in the minors to begin the season, which will allow them to gain extra control and avoid Super Two status for arbitration purposes.
- The most likely scenario for the Yankees and newly acquired Brandon Drury is that Drury opens the season as the team’s starting third baseman, writes Joel Sherman of the New York Post. That’d allow the Yankees to go with either Ronald Torreyes or veteran Danny Espinosa at second base and avoid rushing prospects Miguel Andujar or Gleyber Torres early in the season. Interestingly, despite the fact that Torres missed half the 2017 season with Tommy John surgery (in his non-throwing arm), the Yankees view Torres as closer to the Majors, per Sherman. Andujar is nearly two years older than Torres and has twice the Triple-A experience, though neither has even appeared in 60 games at the top minor league level yet.
Trade Swihart for whatever you can get
dynamite drop in monty
Ha ha ha remember when Swihart was the centerpiece in a Hamels deal. Fart
Nope it was Mookie. Popular incorrect narrative. Nice trolling though.
Back to the cave with you!
Nope it was Swihart, sorry bruh
Nope it was Betts just google it educate yourself. Betts was supposed to be the headliner with Swihart.
Nobody knows what really went on in trade talks. Either way it was not one for one.
In the media, it was often heard that the Phillies wanted a centerpiece of “Betts or Swihart”. Betts was out of the question (he by himself had more trade value than Hamels), Swihart wasn’t an unfair value request but was deeply in Boston’s team plans at the time, which is why the team never had him on the table.
Remember when Swihart was called up prematurely in emergency circumstances and needed just two (awful) weeks of games to catch up and was a GOOD hitting catcher the rest of the season (he hit .295/.345/.426 in his final 69 games after the first 15)? And remember how the team sent him down to make room for Vazquez the next season, and he then got hurt and had his past two years ruined?
The only “fart” thing to do is give up on him. The last time he was given a fair chance, he was a quality major leaguer.
I would be super happy to see the jays make an attempt to get swihart…
I wonder what it would take?
Dump Brock Holt. He has 5 below average tools.
dynamite drop in monty
Seems unwise to do so when both Pedroia and Marco Hernandez are looking at lengthy stints on the DL.
Marco Hernandez is fine. He’s gonna open the year in AAA though.
dynamite drop in monty
I don’t know about “fine”. Shoulder surgeries can be tricky. Even two weeks ago it was reported he was having discomfort swinging a bat on consecutive days.
True but they signed Nunez.
dynamite drop in monty
Right. And Nunez will play everyday until Pedroia is cleared. Until then, Holt has value as a utility man.
Espinosa is a bum why does MLBTR’s assume it’s either him or Torreyes for 2B. Don’t count out Wade if the Yankees keep Torres in Triple A for a few weeks to work the rust off and get some more experience at 2B.
This is coming from Joel Sherman and you can bank on it being another one of his anti Yankee bull stories. Sherman always takes these routes with innuendos to enrage Yankee fans. Wade stands a 100% better chance at starting more then Espinosa.
Enrage? Dude, if you are enraged at the stuff you need help.
If he does not start, how do you want your crow?
I usually like baked. I’ll wait until Schwarber knocks one off the dugout overthrowing the cutoff man…
I agree, cereal
Sherman’s a clown, with anti-Yankee propaganda.
Reminds me a lot of Rich Cimini of the NY Jets. But the Jets are actually depressing, so I give Cimini’s depressing pieces, as the Jets’ beat writer, a pass.
Sherman’s got no excuses.
Gotta figure someone gets hurt this spring and makes the Red Sox roster crunch moot. Which says nothing about what they’ll do when Pedroia and Rodriguez come off the DL. Holt has an option and can be dropped to AAA if need be. But most of the other players in the crunch are out of options. Marrero, Swihart, Johnson, Leon, Wright, Hembree, all out of options. Will make for some interesting decisions. Barnes and Smith still have them though.
Couple more minor roster tweaks coming up. Just like today a little more massaging of the roster before opening day is in order.
Mistake to lose hembree. Lat seaon only full year he’s had and issues with lefty’e or not. RH guys who throw upper 90’s and can get RH guys out with his slider are tough to find.
They need to give him a chance, more of one than they kept giving that wild Joe kelly who has never done anything positive and Hembree still has 4y team control left.
Got to be Holt who goes. Even if it is just releasing him, they escape 5/6th of his salary and that gets the team below the line where they get bumped back 10 spots in the draft. Swihart May be unproven, but he has way more upside and he can serve as an emergency catcher too.
Good assessment. Hard to give up on Holts but I’d have to agree.
jays should trade a minor prospect to the red Sox for Swihart so he can be the back up catcher. I would almost rather have Thole back Malie is that bad.
I think the Red Sox moved Swihart off catcher partly, maybe mostly, because he wasn’t very good back there. Jays definitely need a quality second catcher. Martin needs his off days.
Martin will only catch 60% of the blue jays games this year. The Jays need another full time catcher with tools, not just a backup.
Malie is 10x better than thole, they both suck with the bat but Malie’s defensive skills are off the charts
The Red Sox moved Swihart off of catcher because it suddenly decided one week into the season in 2016 that it wanted Vazquez to be the catcher, and so it sent Swihart down so he could continue to play everyday. Then LF turned into a tire fire, and the team got stupid and figured Swihart’s athleticism and bat were good enough to be an upgrade in LF rather than let him continue to improve at his real position (and that led to him getting hurt).
Swihart was very raw at catcher when he was drafted. The then improved annually and there were NO MAJOR ISSUES with his defense when he was first called up. It was only when the team needed an excuse to send him down that his defense magically became an issue.
To add to that the Red Sox pitchers got off to slow start and after two weeks Swihart lost the starting catchers job. It seems he was made the scapegoat for the slow start.
how does andujar go from being the opening day 3B to not major league ready in a span of a few days?
I don’t think anyone said he was gonna be the starting 3B for The Yankees. He might be half way through the year, if they don’t find anyone who can be productive at third, but until then, I think a lot of people thought he would start in the minors.
So a trade for Hosmer is possible.
Moreland, JBJ and an AAA or AA player.
If they can get Hosmer to waiver his no trade clause.
Why wouldn’t he?
Boston can win SD is a very long shot to even be in the playoffs.
SD saves all sorts of $ and gets a bunch of low paid players.
It’s what they do best.
Hate to see JBJ go.
Great defensive CF.
I’m going to pretend I never saw this….
WTF This guy is really thinking outside the box…
Thinking outside reality…
Do the above trade, flip him to Baltimore for MM who then agrees to a contract extension for $1 more than JDM.
The emoji is good.
Pedro Cerrano's Voodoo
I hope you’re just innocently trolling and not actually thinking that comment has sense.
Dude please stop with these silly trade proposals.
All trade proposals in all the comments sections are silly. Have you ever noticed that none of them come true? none! ever.
What about contract proposals?
I predicted Darvish’s contract*
*If all incentives hit
Are you going to have that on your grave stone?
I don’t think so. Ease up.
Literally the only time I wrote it, just teasing jimmertee, who seemed quite pissed at the lack of trade proposals, coming to fruition.
Did you make that account just to make fun?
I was about to reply to this and then I thought to myself “why am I even wasting my time” Honestly posting that I’d be wasting my time is less of a waste of time lol
Who are you?….
I’m kind of surprised the Rays wouldn’t use Eovaldi as their multi-inning arm for the first few weeks as he builds up from TJ surgery.
Yeah one would think he’s on some kind of innings limit this year.
Guess the Yankees were not as confident in Torres and Andujar as Yankees fans were.
Guess you’re not as smart as your dog thinks you are…
I don’t think it has anything to do with confidence rather why rush the players? Yanks have been looking for infield help to take the pressure off Torres and Andujar. Torres needs to spend 16 days in the minors to gain another year of control so you can almost bet he starts in the minors (unless he bats .900 in ST) plus he’s recovering from TJ and hasn’t spent a lot of time in AAA, he should deff get a little more seasoning. Andujar seems the most likely to start at the majors but why rush it when it’s not necessary. Let him get warmed up at AAA without the pressure than call him up. No one believes Drury/Wade/Torreyes will be the starting 2B/3B by June 1st.
I think you’re discounting Drury’s potential quite a bit. He has strong XBH and OB skills and is only 25. If I’m the Yankees here, Drury is my new 2B, Torres is at 3B at the beginning of May, and Andujar is traded for an arm.
Drury has the extra benefit of being able to play first base and both corner OF spots … so even if Andujar and Torres come up and take the 2b and 3b jobs Drury will still have value to the Yankees for a couple years
3rd is Drury’s best position and I’m looking forward to see how his power plays up in NY
Yankees fans were so confident that they didn’t think anyone was necessary and both Torres and Andujar were guaranteed to start the season in pinstripes. Over and over we read Yankees fans saying exactly that.
Now we find out that management had so little confidence in those two that they made a relatively big trade to make sure they can spend more time in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. That is funny.
?? Andujar’s glove is too raw at third. I was willing to let it ride out because I’d prefer it to paying your boy Machado $400M to man third, or pay a kings ransom for an intra-division trade for a rental.
Torres? He’s still playing 2B. The clock was getting delayed a year— regardless of Brandon Drury trade, Lol
Way to try and make it all Yankees fans from posts from a few. Yea no other team has a few fans that have too much confidence in their prospects and post crazy things. I don’t see why you find that funny when you constantly post inaccurate facts. One for example your take on average age of MLB fans not being 55..did you watch MLB network or ESPN(Buster Olney) commenting on Manfreds state of the game conference. Lot of experts and a lot of facts given yesterday that the age is 55 but they’re all wrong and you got it all figured out. Now you funny to guy.
xabial this guy outinleftfield is supposed to have his finger on the pulse..ha ha ha
Outinleftfield targets Yankee fans, sure but not me, specifically.
I Googled “CowboysoldierFTW” because it sounded like a name of troll, Sure enough, Only one search result came up — His above post. That was his first post here lol. People are making accounts, make attacks at me. :/
So I got a soft spot for outinleftfield because while he may be targeting Yankee fan-base broadly, he never targets people specifically, and… there will will always be Yankee haters here, lol.
CowboysoldierFTW (wtf?) should check his pulse.
Someone is bitter
Why are they not confident? They bolstered the position the depth and their options. Its called looking at the big picture unlike yourself who seems short sighted
They will be up first month. They just need a couple cheap options to start season without starting their FA clocks. For about a million bucks they just saved big time in future contracts if Torres and Andujar end up good enough for big contracts. Smart move with a bunch of young guys on team that could potentially get big contracts. Spreads them out a bit to give them a chance to keep everybody that produces longer and affordable. They believe they are ready to go but a few weeks at beginning of season won’t hurt. What happens if Frazier lights up spring training? Stuck in minors until multiple injuries or maybe a trade and lose an outfielder. I think if Hicks has a strong start they should also try to trade him as I don’t feel he will develop into the all star that Cashman thinks he will be.
Can we all agree that if Andujar and Torres each have breakout spring training performances that they will most certainly break camp with the mlb team. Isn’t that the best case scenario for the Yanks?
No, we can’t “agree.” Yanks want to prolong the arb clock from starting.
That’s 10 days. Not a significant amount of time. My intent was to state how silly it is to say Drury will be the starting this or that. Yankees have never ever not gone with the player giving them the best opportunity to win.
According to Cashman’s statements, he is not going to make any decisions based on preserving service time
He has to say that or he’d be giving the players association ammo in a grievance
Who is the better fielder, Drury or Torreyes?
At 3rd, Drury. At 2nd, its a wash. Drury is a natural 3rd baseman who was playing out of position due to Lamb playing 3rd
Troy had a compression “factor”. Sounds serious.
It did seem like something was wrong all season, even when he was supposedly fine. Too bad, one of my favourites to watch when healthy.
Hopefully Tulo can get it back, but age is catching up quickly. Now he is more suited for 3rd or 1st. The Jays may have to play him at 3rd or 1st in order to keep him on the field. The wear and tear of SS at 33 yrs old is taking its toll.
Ok that was a funny catch … but nobody is perfect … I wonder if the compression fracture played a factor in the Diaz trade lol ( yes I know it did it’s a play on words)
Drury has some crazy home away splits with Arizona. Dont see YS3 helping him much
There in no way Solarte or Diaz can back up Tulo at shortstop. Diaz boots it around so much that St Louis moved him to 2nd. Besides there is a strong chance he is ending up spring training back in the minors.
As for Solarte, he has only had a few hundred innings at short over the years. “The biggest concern for Solarte would have to be his lack of athleticism. The thirty year old isn’t exactly the ideal build for a shortstop and I can see why this could lead people to believe that he may not have the range to be able to play there.” Plus he doesn’t have a great arm. .I can buy 2nd or 3rd for him, but SS. no way. Ryan Goins where are you?
Yangervis Solarte 2017 SS Defensive Stats
199 Inn, +1.3 UZR, +11.8 UZR/150, +1 Defensive Runs Saved.
How is Tulo only 33? It feels like he’s been around and broken down for way too long to just be 33.
Red Sox trade Hanley and more for Archer lmao
Brock Holt would be excellent addition for Rays
Way Tampa is shedding salary, anyone see them paying 2.2m for a guy who can play 7 positions?
Wow Red Sox are loaded top to bottom
Holt is basically a replacement level player. Marco is, too, but is still considered a prospect and could be more. So given a choice, I’d go with the upside of Marco Hernandez
