The Mets are focused on acquiring catcher J.T. Realmuto, but they seem to have a fallback plan behind the plate if those talks collapse. Free agent Yasmani Grandal has emerged as a “strong possibility” for the Mets, Andy Martino of SNY tweets. Likewise, the White Sox are “looking at” Grandal, per Buster Olney of ESPN.
The 30-year-old Grandal, who has spent his career with the Padres and Dodgers, ranks as the top catcher available in free agency this winter. MLBTR predicts Grandal will receive a four-year, $64MM contract on the heels of yet another strong season in Los Angeles, where the switch-hitter slashed .241/.349/.466 (125 wRC+) and totaled at least 20 home runs (24) for the third straight campaign. He’s also a well-regarded backstop, despite some notable miscues in the playoffs, as Baseball Prospectus ranked him as the premier defensive catcher in the game in 2018.
Any team that signs Grandal would have to give up more than just money, as he rejected a $17.9MM qualifying offer from the Dodgers after the season. In the cases of New York and Chicago, that would mean surrendering their second-highest draft pick and $500K in international signing bonus pool space in 2019. Meanwhile, the Dodgers would receive a compensatory draft pick after Competitive Balance Round B for Grandal’s departure.
For both the Mets and White Sox, it’s easy to see a fit for Grandal. New York’s current catcher trio – Travis d’Arnaud, Kevin Plawecki and Tomas Nido – inspires little confidence, while the White Sox traded 2018 starter Omar Narvaez to the Mariners for reliever Alex Colome earlier this offseason. The White Sox do still have veteran Welington Castillo on hand, though he only has one guaranteed year left on his contract, and general manager Rick Hahn said Tuesday (via James Fegan of The Athletic) that prospects Zack Collins and Seby Zavala aren’t yet ready for the majors. However, Hahn did note that it would make more sense “on paper” for the White Sox to pursue a backup catcher instead of a starter.
HalosHeavenJJ
He fits the Angels needs perfectly, but the draft compensation would hurt.
Slevin
Especially when you have a lower tier system.
HalosHeavenJJ
Actually moved up quite a bit lately, but can always be better.

With the Marlins being more & more unrealistic in Realmuto trade talks, I truly believe that the Mets should just sign Grandal.
phenomenalajs
Agreed. Big mistake to give up Thor, Nimmo, Conforto and/or Rosario for him in any scenario.
Danny B.
If the Marlins were willing to accept a package of Rosario & David Peterson for Realmuto, then I would do that because the Mets could then sign a SS like Jose Iglesias or Freddy Galvis but that’s the only trade I would do at this point.
mattwhitfield77
Only way I move Thor is for a legit 3B!
ASapsFables
One of the best available is a free agent who would only cost $$$ while also allowing “Thor” to remain a vital part of the Mets rotation. The new gunslinger GM in town should also consider inking Yasmani Grandal or making a straight up trade with the Marlins for J.T. Realmato and surrender whatever prospects the Marlins desire. Do all that and NY would be a legitimate contender to win the tough NL East and also be a formidable club in the postseason with their rotation and newly acquired elite closer.
BrewCrew1302
unrealistic is an understatement. Jeter is winging it day to day over there lol
Slevin
Why did you lol your own post, because that comes across completely needy.
thegreatcerealfamine
It’s a damn shame Jeter can’t satisfy the opinion of an internet guru.
imgman09
I think the Fish are unrealistic in their division because they don’t want to really trade Realmuto in the division
BrewCrew1302
He was a nightmare defensively in the playoffs

Brody reminds me of the the movie, the International when the father asked his brainiac boy what do you do when you are in so far that there is no way out. The boy says you go all the way in, that’s Brody!
MetsYankeesRedSox
The Mets are everywhere!
Slevin
No matter where they go, they’re always there…Bong
lowtalker1
I really like how this new Mets gm has been going after names
Predictions for 2019 as of right now
Phillies/ braves can go either 1 or 2
Nationals 3
Mets 4
Miami 5th place
juicemane
I agree, feels like the exact same thing AJ did (which I like, don’t get me wrong). Mets fans: have fun with that “fire sale” at the trade deadline.
xabial
Money on Mets if their bid for JT fails. Brodie making moves. Heard Buster on Kay today; he speculated Mets could sign FA like Iglesias if they bit the bullet and traded Rosario, or save prospects and sign Grandal.
Slevin
Yea that improves the team…not
pplama
Sox signed Castillo at the recommendation of Rick Renetria.
Making him an $8mil back-up for Grandal, while losing needed Intl bonus $ and a draft pick, would be cutting short the rebuild a year too soon and setting themselves up for a repeat of their failed 2015 approach.
kerplunk905
Sox have been trading the international money; due to signing Robert they are limited to how much they can spend on international free agents. So, they have traded some of that money multiple times recently. So, for the Sox, what could hurt is trading the draft pick. If the Sox are serious about Harper and/or Manny – then WTF go for it an have a veteran catcher as well, since the article is right that Collins and Seby are not ready yet (and, as prospects, may never develop into everyday starting catchers)
pplama
They have a vet. C who they are already paying $8mil.
Grandal has a QO attached. If the Sox sign him , they lose a draft pick AND Intl. signing $ for next July 2. Which will be their 1st year without restrictions.
ChiSox_Fan
Maybe Sox have a hunch that their $8mil catcher will miss some 2019 games like last year!
Priggs89
Or maybe they think Grandal is a big upgrade, and they don’t really care about having a backup catcher making $8M for 1 year – a year in which their payroll is minuscule.
pplama
I wasn’t debating what they were thinking. I was voicing an opinion that, for the reasons I listed, thinking that way was stupid.
ASapsFables
Priggs89: Yes. It would be nice for the White Sox to have an elite defender behind the plate with solid framing skills to assist a young pitching staff with some command concerns. It’s a bonus when that catcher can also hit with good power and OBP numbers. This would apply to not only FA Yasmani Grandal but also Marlins backstop J.T. Realmuto who seems open to a Buster Posey like contract extension with the right organization.
I’m not sold on the White Sox catching prospects from a defensive standpoint which should be priority #1. Zack Collins might actually be of interest to the Marlins in a multiple prospect package since he is a south Florida native who starred at the University of Miami. As long as the White Sox can secure an extension with Realmuto and not surrender any of their top-5 prospects they ought to consider pulling the trigger on such a deal. That still leaves the Marlins with a package potentially containing two top-100 prospects in SP Dane Dunning and OF Blake Rutherford, along with a top-10 catcher in Collins. Who says no among the GM’s?
As for Wellington Castillo, the White Sox could still flip him to any of the losers in the Grandal/Realmuto sweepstakes, either this offseason or next summer.
Thomas Bliss
I say do it. You could play both of them in the lineup. Right now we don’t have an everyday DH or RF.
steelerbravenation
I have been adamant that whatever the price sets itself at for Realmuto the Braves would swoop in and get him last minute. Until I heard today that his agent said that they expect to get Buster Posey money when he hits free agency in 2 years. That threw me off Mets could have him. He may be the best catcher in baseball now but that is more a sign of how bad catchers are more so how good he is.
busta37
I would be ok with signing him instead of getting rid of Syndergaard and Rosario.
rct 2
I don’t know why this isn’t their Plan A. Signing him and giving up only money for ~4 years makes the team so much better than trading away Syndergaard and more for two years of Realmuto. Keep Syndergaard, Conforto, Nimmo, etc and just sign Grandal.
padam
Yes. ^
thegreatcerealfamine
All these Mets rumblings are nothing but posturing at best.
alien
i agree Mets should go FA route rather than give up Thor and Rosario or Nimmo.. I think Maldonado fits in to our pitching staff better than Grandal..
fantasyman99
Realmuto if your not giving up Thor , otherwise sign Grandal
stretch123
Makes so much more sense for the Mets to sign a catcher then overpay for one thru trade. Wouldn’t overpay for Grandal however
jakec77
Unless there is some truth to the rumor that Mets somehow end up with Andujar AND Realmuto for Syndergaard (which I doubt) I don’t get why they aren’t focusing exclusively on free agents. Realmuto + whatever pitcher they get in free agency isn’t better than Syndergaard + Grandal; it isnt even better than Syndergaard + Maldanado. Hell, I question if it’s better than Syndergaard + current catching group.
dematteo1982
I believe that unless a trade for Realmuto is headed by Rosario, then the Mets shouldnt make the deal. Rosario is the easiest to replace via a stop gap free agent. Iglesias or Galvis fit this description. Nimmo and Conforto stay no matter what in Realmuto talks. Say no deal is made.
1. Sign Grandal 4yr/ $58mil

Without a doubt threat to win the NL East..maybe more
thegreatcerealfamine
Maybe third, but I doubt it. Plus they won’t spend like that, even if.
juicemane
Lagares in the 2 hole? Grandal as your 5, Alonso as your 6?…you must want them to tank!
The Marlins line-up next year might score more runs than this one.
dazedatnoon
I’m good with the Sox signing Grandal then moving Castillo or even DFA’ing him. He gone!
