Athletics Acquire Jurickson Profar In Three-Team Trade With Rangers, Rays

By Steve Adams | December 21, 2018 at 11:45am CDT

11:45am: The Rangers are receiving $750K worth of international allotments in the trade, tweets Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

11:22am: The teams have formally announced the trade. The international bonus allotments that the Rangers are receiving are coming over from the Athletics; the amount was not specified, though international allotments must be traded in increments of at least $250K, per the collective bargaining agreement.

10:15am: The Athletics, Rangers and Rays have reportedly come to an agreement on a three-team trade that will send infielder Jurickson Profar from Texas to Oakland. Yahoo’s Jeff Passan first broke the story. Right-handed reliever Emilio Pagan is headed from the A’s to the Rays in the swap, as is Oakland’s Competitive Balance Round A selection in next year’s draft (currently slotted in at No. 38 overall). The Rangers will send minor league right-hander Rollie Lacy to the Rays, as well.

Jurickson Profar | Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

In exchange for Profar and Lacy, the Rangers will receive minor league infielder Eli White from the A’s. Additionally, the Rays will send minor league left-handers Brock Burke and Kyle Bird and minor league right-hander Yoel Espinal to the Rangers. Texas will also receive international bonus allotments in the trade.

Presumably, the trade signals that Jed Lowrie’s time with the Athletics has come to a close. The Oakland infield is currently full with Matt Chapman at third base, Marcus Semien at shortstop and Matt Olson at first base, meaning Profar’s likeliest spot with the A’s will be second base. The addition of Profar also brings into question prospect Franklin Barreto’s immediate future with the organization, as he’d been the presumptive heir apparent at second base in the event that Lowrie signed elsewhere.

Profar, 26 in February, once rated as the game’s top overall prospect but saw is promising future put on hold when a pair of shoulder injuries cost him both the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He struggled in his 2016 return and was a seldom used utility piece in 2017, but Profar finally enjoyed a full, productive season with the Rangers in 2018. Last year, the switch-hitter appeared n a career-high 146 games and tallied a career-high 594 plate appearances, hitting .254/.335/.458 with 20 homers, 35 doubles, six triples and 10 stolen bases along the way.

Because Texas optioned Profar to Triple-A for much of the 2017 season, his overall level of Major League service time was suppressed a bit. As such, he has just under five years of service time, meaning the Athletics will be able to control Profar for both the 2019 and 2020 seasons before he reaches free agency. Profar is projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn just $3.4MM in 2019, so he’ll be an affordable means of filling the team’s second base need for the next two years — a key factor for the perennially cost-conscious A’s, who still need to address their rotation.

The only other Major League piece involved in the trade is the 27-year-old Pagan, who is joining his third organization in three years. He spent just one year in Oakland after being acquired in the trade that sent first baseman Ryon Healy to the Mariners in the 2017-18 offseason. Though he’s moved around a fair bit, Pagan has generally had useful big league results. In 112 1/3 innings a a Major Leaguer, he’s notched a 3.85 ERA with 9.5 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9.

Though Pagan shows good control and is able to miss plenty of bats, however, he’s not without his red flags. The right-hander is among the game’s most extreme fly-ball pitchers and has yielded an average of 1.6 home runs per nine innings at the Major League level — neither of which figures to become any easier when moving to the American League East and its cavalcade of hitter-friendly parks (though Tampa Bay’s Tropicana Field doesn’t necessarily fit that description). For the Rays, the fact that Pagan is well-versed in multi-inning appearances was likely appealing, though. Pagan’s 112 1/3 MLB frames have come across 89 total appearances, and the Rays aggressively lean on multi-inning relievers as part of the burgeoning “opener” strategy that worked quite well for them in 2018.

The 23-year-old Lacy will join the Tampa Bay organization after spending only a brief time with the Rangers. Texas acquired Lacy in the July trade that sent Cole Hamels to the Cubs, though his results with the Rangers dropped off a bit from the numbers he posted in the Cubs’ minor league system. Some of that surely coincides with a move from Class-A to Class-A Advanced, and it’s worth noting that Lacy only totaled 28 1/3 innings in the Rangers’ system before the season ended, so it’s also a small sample of data. On the season as a whole, the right-hander worked to a 2.97 ERA with 10.0 K/9, 3.1 BB/9 and a ground-ball rate of nearly 60 percent through 109 innings between those two levels this season.

Looking to the Rangers’ return, Burke may well be the headliner in the deal. A third-round pick in the 2014 draft, the 22-year-old Burke was the Rays’ minor league pitcher of the year this past season and pitched to a 3.08 ERA with 10.4 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 137 1/3 innings between Class-A Advanced and Double-A. The Rays protected Burke from the Rule 5 Draft last month by selecting him to the 40-man roster, and he’ll now be added to the Rangers’ 40-man in place of Profar.

Bird, 26 in April, split the year between Double-A and Triple-A, where he pitched to a combined 2.39 ERA with 88 strikeouts against 35 walks in 75 1/3 innings of relief work. Like Burke, he was selected to the Rays’ 40-man roster last month, meaning he’ll join the Rangers’ 40-man and give the organization an immediate left-handed bullpen option for the upcoming season. Even if he doesn’t break camp with the club, it seems likely that Bird will get an opportunity at some point in 2019.

The 26-year-old Espinal spent the bulk of the ’18 season in Double-A Montgomery, where he boasted a huge strikeout rate but demonstrated his share of control issues as well. In 54 2/3 innings at the Double-A level, Espinal notched an impressive 1.98 ERA with 11.7 K/9 but 4.8 BB/9 and a below-average 32.2 percent ground-ball rate. He won’t be as immediate of an option as Burke or Bird, but with some Double-A experience already under his belt, he’s likely not that far off from MLB readiness.

White, meanwhile, is the lone piece headed from Oakland to Texas in the swap. An 11th-round pick by the A’s back in the 2016 draft, White took his already-strong OBP skills to new heights in at the Double-A level in 2018. In 578 plate appearances this past season, the second baseman/shortstop hit .306/.388/.450 with nine home runs, 30 doubles, eight triples and 18 steals.

Yahoo’s Jeff Passan reported that Profar had been traded to Oakland and eventually followed up with all of the names and pieces involved in the deal (all Twitter links). USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and the Dallas Morning News’ Evan Grant all added some details along the way (all Twitter links).

xabial…..You repeatedly say you want to talk baseball yet the last few days you seem more interested in other things. I am beginning to believe what someone else said….that you like the attention.

For instance , 2 days ago your very first comment on the Yankees/MM article was “@bb1600 ….Why are you back? Does this mean u’ll stop? Still see those 10+ dv, God of the shills ;P” Your second comment was “This guy and Bart*
I disagree w/ Balk’s assessment, but dude’s respectful. Bart is 100% troll” Why? You are now bringing this all on yourself. You are obsessed with what others think. Let it go or life will chew you up and spit you out.

I have down-voted you at times but only when I disagree (like Mark Reynolds) and I usually explain why, like I will do now. As “gocincy” said “The article isn’t about you, so don’t make the comments about you either.” That was the first thing I thought when I read your comment. Get over it already.

I get that, but it’s still a fall from where he was thought to be. I just remember when fans of teams, my team included, were hot and heavy to acquire him. There were some pretty big young names thrown around in armchair GM trades scenarios. Also, Texas fans, some of them anyway, were wanting the moon, stars and several planets for him.

Once you get to watch him play a lot you see he does everything, and I mean everything, really well but doesn’t have one thing that stands out. It makes it hard to value as we are so used to saying this guy can hit or he is fast or a defensive whiz where Profar is just really good at all of it and not many deficiencies. A true baseball fan will like the way he plays.

Had he not gotten hurt I am pretty sure he would be entrenched at 2nd base for the Rangers and there would not be Odor in Texas right now.

He came in with such hype followed by a string of injuries/lost playing time, so it’s hard for most people to separate the disparate expectations. Now he looks productive and serviceable, but far from what people thought he’d do. I have no idea about all of those prospects, so I don’t know how he was valued in this particular deal.

When you have such a restricted budget….I suspect making many under the radar moves would be needed since signing a big time free agent just isn’t an option. I hope they can build on their surprise season in 2018, as someone else needs to win the AL East.

I believe Profar is going to be really good next season. He hit 20 HRs as a 25 year old in his first healthy and full season. If a change of scenery helps and he can build off of what he did I think he will surprise.

Not many guys who can hit 20 homers have experience at all 4 infield positions though. Talk to any Javy Baez apologist about how great that is.

If anything, they can play Profar or Pinder at third to start the year if Chapman isn’t ready. Barreto would probably get some playing time at 2nd early on as well.

Rangers Ballpark played as offensive heavy last season as it has in several years and Profar hit .271/.362/.511 there, compared to .237/.307/.405 on the road. Rangers hitters last year had an OPS 110 points higher at home than on the road. Rangers pitchers had an OPS against 89 points higher at home than on the road.

Profar is a product of his home ballpark, period.

Profar was a 2.0 WAR player. That is equivalent to an average MLB starter. The guy isn’t all that great. I don’t know why they didn’t pony up for Lowrie. This team has been cashing in on revenue sharing for years and putting it in their pockets

Profar is also only 25 and that’s just one year older than the main prospect we’re sending out in Eli White. Profar also still has some very reachable potential in the BA category. We didnt pay out for Lowrie because there’s a 9m salary difference (projected) and if youve seen the FA market for SPs lately, thats about what an average #4-5 SP is going for these days. We need 2 still.

I don’t get it either, there is no name in there that stands out to me that the Rangers are getting to really force their hand to ship out Profar. He finally started to produce and teams have show super utility guys as being very useful and valuable. At the very least why not wait and see how he does the first half of next season and trade hit at the deadline for a better haul?? But even better, if he really is starting to click and the Rangers are trying to be back to competing once the new stadium opens, isn’t this the type of player you can use? Maybe even extend at a moderate contract rate?

The pkg Texas received is a lot better than you’re giving them credit for. as a tb fan, I feel like we slightly overpaid for what we received…if it weren’t for the cb pick, I’d be pissed.
Burke was the 21st ranked prospect in the Rays system last year and put up some sick numbers this year in AA, which earned him Rays minor league pitcher of the year honors. he has a ceiling of a #3-4 starter and is not far from the show.
Bird has marinated in the upper levels of the minors for a few years and is mlb ready now as a lefty middle reliever that can throw for multiple innings due to a 5 pitch repertoire. He closed for Durham and also looks pretty good stats wise, save for a little higher walk rate than one would like.
Yoel’s numbers as a rp aren’t too shabby either.
I don’t know much about Eli but Burke, to me, was the get that got got. He’ll be in the rotation within a year and you’ll change your opinion when Profar is hitting .230 in Oak. You’re looking at Profar through Ranger’s colored glasses – Tex got a good haul.

After digging deeper into the prospects involved, I like this trade for the Rangers. You get a near-ready starter with mid-rotation potential (Burke), two high-ceiling bullpen arms (Bird and Espinal), a solid infield prospect with a rapidly improving bat (White) and international money.

That’s a really solid return for a guy in Profar who has only had one good major league season and is a free agent after the 2020 season.

I wasn’t sure what to make of this trade when it was first announced, but I think all three teams did relatively well.

Unless we’re getting a top arm, no reason to shop Barreto yet. Big time power from MI, with solid defense. Could be an Rougned Odor type with more BA and less steals. That said, if we are shopping Barreto for an arm, I’d be swinging for the fences and looking at Syndergaard.

Even if we roll an 8man pen, its Trienen, Soria, Trivino, German, Petit, Hendricks, Buchter for sure. Last spot would be down to Dull, Wendelken, Brooks, Tanner Anderson.. or maybe another LH as Buchter is our only one as of now.

      1. Probably Patrick Wisdom, who they traded for earlier this offseason.

      2. I think we got decent value, particularly given that Profar has only had one good season and has just two years of control remaining.

      * White is an intriguing infield prospect who seems to really be coming into his own offensively.
      * Bird is a major-league ready reliever with really nice numbers in the high minors.
      * Burke looks like a future rotation candidate who dominated Double A for nine starts last year.
      * Espinal looks from his numbers like a pre-breakout Jose Leclerc (low h/9, high K/9, high BB/9). If they can get his walks in check, he could be a good late-inning reliever.
      * And we get more money to spend internationally, where this front office has thrived in the past.

      3. The A’s probably had the most interest in Profar and this trade probably brought back the best return.

      4. Bird will probably be a 2019 bullpen piece. The others will start in the minors.

      5. We’ll see. I’m not ruling out anything at this point.

I dont think the interest is the problem. Its that the market was a bit saturated with 2Bs and Lowrie is looking for that last multi-year payday. With Kinsler and Murphy now off the market, who’s the big 2B competition? LaMahieu.. I think Lowrie signs before 2019 and gets the 12 AAV he’s looking for. Washington seems like a natural fit. Good luck to him, hope he stays healthy

@Lovetron – Agree – he’ll get 12-15 AAV over two years. He’s earned it. Shame we (the A’s) can’t pay it. On base machine, doubles machine, tidy in defence. Just a great pro. Wish him health and success. Preferably in the NL….

How many years of Profar are the A’s getting? Are they just buying more time for Barreto to develop or…?

Semien’s become an excellent defensive SS. No reason to move him now.

Profar didn’t grade out well st SS last year st all… Semien is above average as long as Olson and chappy are there

I feel like the Rays won this trade. I have no evidence to support this. Just a gut feeling.

I believe that anytime a third team comes in, it’s going to be to their benefit, since the other teams need them to make the deal happen.

Pagan was an extreme disappointment with Oakland. So much so that he was sent down to the minors and even when he was called back up he was “meh” at best. An extreme FB pitcher, I would be nervous when he starts pitching in places like NY, TOR, BOS and BAL.

Good WHIP. Maybe the Rays can help him improve those secondary pitches.

Btw, what team isn’t good against fastballs? I’m always shocked how many fastballs are thrown.

A low-risk, low-reward move for the A’s that will deliver minimal impact. In other words, a textbook Billy Beane move.

I dunno that its low anything. Profar is 25 still, plenty of potential still to tap. Eli White has a solid bat and could be a Mark Ellis/Justin Turner type. If Profar delivers on his 2.5-3 WAR projection, think the move is a great one for the A’s

It would be nice if there was an overall clear summary of the trade at some point in the article when it comes to these three team trades. Like

    Rays receive/give up:
    As receive/give up:
    Rangers receive/give up:

Gallo at 3B, but I dont know about the guys coming back. I really wanted to see Profar get to play everyday and see what he can do. I hope JD knows best on this move.

One concern for me – we still have a distinct lack of LH batting. Profar is switch, and Olson is LH.. beyond that, we are so righty heavy. Krush, Laureano, Piscotty, Semien, Pinder, Chapman, Phegley… I guess Martini or Fowler is being gifted a roster spot? Would love to make a move for a LH LF like David Peralta.

Would really like to agree but he’s now blocked for two years? Was saying on another thread this morning that we needed replacements for Lucroy – Lowrie – and the entire rotation but the FO seemed sniffy about Frankie B.

Seems they’re still sniffy about Frankie B.

They’re gonna make him earn a role, which is what good teams do. Don’t see an issue with it

Kinda – but do you really think he’s (Frankie B) two years away from MLB ready? Given he got big team time this year?

No I think he’s ready now, at least for 300 PAs. Think he could supplant Semien or Profar too, but needs to prove more at MLB level before we hand him anything. If he shows we’ll this year, we shop Sem or Profar either at deadline or next offseason. Franklin did very well at AAA but hasn’t kicked down the doors to a starting role.. yet

No, they’re going to treat him like Pinder this year… he’s been playing LF in winter ball… if he pushes the envelope and Profar doesn’t take another step forward Profar could become the util guy (or be trade bait?)
Looks like Canha is the odd man out
