Trade Rumors: Cubs, Hardy, A’s, Tigers, Holt, Yankees

By Mark Polishuk | December 12, 2018 at 12:33pm CDT

The Cubs have been linked to the reliever market, though they may wait until January before making any new acquisitions.  As one source speculates to the Chicago Tribune’s Mark Gonzales, the Cubs might first need to clear some payroll space before adding to their bullpen.  Rumors of a lack of a spending capacity have loomed over Chicago’s offseason, and the crunch could be tighter than anticipated if the team will have to move other salaries to afford even mid-tier relief pitching signings.  Gonzales runs through a few of the names on the Cubs roster that could possibly be dealt in salary-clearing moves, though he notes that several of these options don’t look too feasible, as players are either coming off down years (i.e. Brian Duensing, Brandon Kintzler) or they’re coming off good years (i.e. Jose Quintana, Ben Zobrist) and thus still have value to a Cubs team looking to contend in 2019.

Some more trade rumblings from around the Winter Meetings…

  • The Athletics have some interest in Tigers left-hander Blaine Hardy, the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser reports.  Hardy started 13 of his 30 appearances in 2018 and posted some generally solid (3.56 ERA, 3.00 K/BB rate) numbers, though he didn’t miss many bats with a 6.9 K/9.  Hardy is only projected to earn $1.2MM next season and he is controllable through two more arbitration-eligible seasons beyond 2019, making him a particularly good fit for the budget-conscious A’s.  With a rotation still dotted with injury question marks, the A’s could use Hardy as a swingman again, deploying him as a starter on occasion or possibly coming in to pitch after an “opener” starts the game.  Despite this need for pitching, Oakland could be playing the waiting game on starting options, as Slusser notes that the club has yet to contact free agent arms like Derek Holland, Gio Gonzalez, or Lance Lynn.  Also from Slusser’s piece, he notes that the Athletics will still look to re-sign catcher Jonathan Lucroy even after acquiring Chris Herrmann yesterday.
  • There have been a number of names on the Red Sox roster (some surprising) mentioned as trade candidates within the last 24 hours, and the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo mentions that Brock Holt is another name that has received interest.  A deal seems unlikely, however, as the super-utilityman is slated to handle second base if Dustin Pedroia isn’t ready for the start of the season.  Holt rebounded from a poor 2017 campaign to hit .277/.362/.411 over 367 PA for the World Series champs last season, spending most of his time as a second baseman but also making starts at shortstop, third base, first base, and both corner outfield slots.
  • As usual, a ton of trade speculation has swirled around the Yankees, and GM Brian Cashman told reporters (including George A. King III of the New York Post) that he has been asked about virtually every player on his roster.  That list even includes James Paxton, as teams checked in to see if New York would consider flipping the star southpaw after acquiring him from the Mariners last month (needless to say, the Yankees declined).  Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton were the only two players Cashman said he hadn’t yet been asked about.

Peddy has been spotted working out every day on the iconic Apple “space ship” corporate office campus. This secretive location includes workshops where the next version of the Apple Watch is being developed. He was followed to a Starbucks in Cupertino where he offered a hint of his off-season regimen. “I’m working on something really big to help the team next year” after admitting that his knee is not responding to treatment.

Nothing ever really happens at the winter meetings; rather not much is really finalized at the meetings. It’s where the execs and agents chat and primarily lay ground work for deals to be made in the upcoming weeks.

Regarding Cubs, I find it hard to believe that with all the past statements by Ricketts & Theo about the window, another WS, the intense determination to win now…that they suddenly just decide to sit this one out?
Doesn’t make sense, especially when the current group has only 3 more years together.
I still think Theo is creating an environment where he can do his business his way.

Also, every time the Cubs sign a big FA, it seems to be a move that shocks everyone! They are the best at setting the narrative and operating in stealth mode. Regard the need to move salary beforehand…these guys leave no stone unturned and plan years in advance for payroll. Would they really pick up Hamels $20m option if they were broke? They could’ve just penciled Montgomery into the rotation again!

Lester can come off the books after the 2020 season. Zobrist is done after this year.

Chatwood, if still around is, I think 2020, but I’m not sure, without looking.

The money will be there to keep the core together, if desired.

My guess, that’s another reason they aren’t looking at the top bug name bp guys.

They don’t want money locked up for another 5 years.

Put aside what anyone associated with the Cubs have said and look at their most recent actions. They picked up Hamels option and traded Smyly to free up a few million dollars. Chatwood is still on this team and a liability. Toronto just cut Tulo and will eat the $38m remaining. If the Cubs were still sitting on millions of payroll flexibility why not cut their loss and eat the remains $25m or so over the next 2 years? The Cubs need multiple relief pitchers, particularly since Morrow’s surgery. Strop Cishek, Edwards and probably Montgomery isn’t going to cut it when the starting rotation is a combination of old, declining, injured and they don’t pitch deep into games.

Actually it does make sense on some level to choose not to blow past the luxury tax hit right now

The team as of right now is pretty good. Last season ended in disappointment, but they had the second best record in the NL, so a massive overhaul isn’t really needed. A lot of their key guys are up for big raises and extensions in the near future, so having payroll space for that isn’t a terrible idea.

If you read it more as the Cubs choosing not to spend then jumping to the conclusion they can’t, there’s logic there.

That said, i think it’s still possible they’re still ‘in’ on Harper and just want to save money for that.

I’m thinking the same and am leaning to something not going quite as projected with the TV network. While very stealth, this is about as transparent an organization there is in sports (especially Theo) and things have gone kind of dark (pun intended) in regards to their own TV network. Being that they are under the 12 month mark now, there should be much more news to this. Perhaps the endless amount of money from the network may be endless??????

The problem with all these salary movement things—if the Cubs don’t want Kintzler at $5M or Duesing at his rate—why would any other team want them at that rate. Like the Reds want to pay Chatwood $13M a year? Please….

      Reply
      • ABCD

Perhaps getting the network off the ground is costing the Cubs all the money they want to spend right now. That and the Ricketts don’t want to go too far over the luxury tax threshold.

For better and worse, the Cubs did most of their shopping for 2019 last winter. A team that won 95 games is pretty much intact with chances for both improvement and regression among the current players.

Also, $50-60 million is coming off the books next winter. If half of that goes to arb raises, those players and the Cubs as a whole will most likely have had a really good year. And we will know by then if the new TV network will boost payroll for 2020.

At this point, if they want to clear salary; package Duensing + Kintzler with a couple of guys at the bottom of the top 30 and ship them to some team that wants to be an opportunist.

Well for starters, most of their biggest contracts are either injury prone and not contributing, or underperforming and severely over paid. So if their tapped out already, they’re screwed for years to come. Maybe you should consider thinking, then you might understand more.

Understand that you answered with a hypothetical?

You want Theo to explain away your unfounded assumptions about what might be true?

          Sorry, I can’t really understand that, I’m an adult…

Uh, there’s enough history with Darvish to realize that he’s not a reliable closer, even with plenty of rest between appearances. Darvish hasn’t been healthy in 4 years, and mentally fragile to boot. Of course, these facts would be all hypothetical to Cubs fan, what with the addiction to Koolaid and all.

A very quiet winter meetings for the Cubs thus far and not much more optimism regarding the remainder of the offseason, at least in terms of any impact FA signings. This all comes on the heels of some very intriguing but mostly false trade rumors involving key players like Kris Bryant, Willson Contreras and Kyle Schwarber. The biggest Cubs news since the end of the season has pretty much revolved around their manager and the team’s unwillingness to commit to a contract extension along with yet another overhaul to the coaching staff.

Typical comment from a jealous Sox fan obsessed with the Cubs popularity. Rather than trolling like most White Sox fans why not say something intelligent

As a diehard Cub and White Sox fan I will extend an hola to Eloy Jimenez next April when he debuts. I will also say hello to Dylan Cease, hopefully no later than July 31st.

On a related note, rumor has it that the Yankees and White Sox have been sending the Cubs annual Christmas cards ever since their respective summer deadline deals in 2016 and 2017. In the holiday spirit, perhaps you can join them as well.

The Javy rumor has the most teeth to it and it could open room for Machado.

That would still leave them needing a shortstop

Haha, why would the Cubs trade Javy to make room for Machado. That doesn’t make an ounce of sense.

You got me, I don’t want Machado. Trading Javy while stock is high makes much more sense than all the nonsense of Schwarbs or KB being moved. To reduce payroll, I can see moving Ben, don’t like that idea but Cubs are paying him too much as part time player. Same with Heyward. IMO those two are more than enough for veteran leadership and they are part of the core. Offense is good-to-go as is. If they start off slow again and fall behind in the standings, cut Maddon loose and shake things up then.

Javy is not going anywhere. Theo has allegedly already turned down trade offers for Schwarber & said he’s not on the trade market. Ben is almost 40 years old & in the last year of his contract, so no teams are likely to be interested. There is a chance of trading Bryant next season & signing Nolan Arenado to replace him. There might be plans to trade Schwarber next season, then Bryant moves to LF, & Arenado moves to 3B, which would be the best possible outcome. Javy is not going anywhere. The Cubs don’t want Russell to play SS, but due to him behaving like a thug, he lost all his trade value & we got screwed keeping him. The Heyward situation is unfortunate. He’s a great fielder but just can’t seem to put it together at the plate. He’s also not going anywhere, cause there is not a team in the galaxy that would touch his massive contract! The Cubs are also screwed with him(same with Chatwood)

Cubs are in SERIOUS trouble. They couldn’t hold off the Brewers last season and they will be even better this year, while the Cubs still lack a leadoff hitter, an everyday 2B, an everyday CF, and an impact clutch bat. Lester and Hamels are a year older and declining, Darvish will get hurt, Chatwood sucks, and Hendricks relies too much on his change. They may finish 4th unless the brass figure out some BIG moves and quick.

So easy if I was the Cubs GM to offer the Mets Quintana and Almora for Syndergard. Solves the problem of the Cubs shedding a little bit of salary and giving Mets CF that they need

Top 10 Cubs List for Success Offseason & 2019

    1. Sign a Top-line Catcher with leadership skills. Split the duties with Contreras. We need two awesome catchers. Contreras needs time to grow. He was used in way too many innings last season by Maddon.
    2. Keep Ben Zobrist, He is a class act, and the only real professional hitter
3.Look at firing Jed Hoyer! Theo doesn’t need a yes man. This needs to come from ownership. He can’t scout pitching worth a Sh*T. A lot of the talent comes from his predecessor, Baez, Contreras etc. Jed needs to go not Maddon.
    4. Again Fire Jed Hoyer
    5. Jason Heyward is on his way to being worst, I say worst free agent signing Bust in MLB history, Need another leader in outfield
    6. Possibly trade Kris Bryant. He has hit his peak and is a diminishing asset. His swing will always make him have shoulder issues.
    7. Don’t sign Bryce Harper. He is destined for injuries, and is severely over rated. He is a high school drop out who has been beating his body up since he was 16. His body is going to fail. Last season he was not good.
    8. Look at signing Manny Machado if the deal is right. He is actually better than Baez, but I like Baez.
    9. Again sign a great catcher. This will help Contreras.
    10. Sign Joe Maddon to an extension. He brought all the success to Chicago. I’ve been alive a very long time, and can’t remember Cubs going to the playoffs 4 years in a row. I loved the last 4 years. Keep Maddon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Red Sox deal for Pablo Sandoval beats the Cubs deal for Heyward as the worst free agent signing in history! They got absolutely no value out of him and still have to pay him $20M+ this year and $5M next year. At least Heyward still plays gold-glove caliber defense and can still run the bases in the rare case when he gets on base. Panda brought nothing but luxury tax hell to the Red Sox that they are still paying for today!

Kris Bryant is nowhere near his peak. They need to lock him up. Trading him would be a mistake..
Alfonso Soriano is worse than Heyward
Derek Lee extension is worth than hwyqard
Milton Bradley is worse than hwywaed.

Bryant had one great year. Now that pitchers have figured out his swing, he’s been striking out a ton, and looks human. If he continues to regress this year, the Cubs would be smart to sell high before he reaches free agency.

Cubs would be smart to give him 10 to 12 years at 260mil to start. The rumor of the 10 year 200mil extension they offered him never happened. He’s smart be does want to talk extension til at least 2years before his walk year.
