Yoenis Cespedes Fractures Ankle In Accident At His Ranch

By Steve Adams | May 20, 2019 at 3:04pm CDT

Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes suffered “ankle fractures” in an accident at his ranch in Port St. Lucie over the weekend, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen announced Monday afternoon. Additional information was not provided, and it’s not known how far back this will push what was already a murky timeline for Cespedes’ return. He’s being evaluated by medical professionals in New York City today. Tim Healey of Newsday adds that Cespedes sustained multiple fractures in his right ankle after stepping in a hole and experiencing a “violent” fall (Twitter link).

Cespedes underwent a pair of surgeries last year to address calcification in both heels, the effects of which were expected to sideline him until at least midway through the 2019 campaign. There was no defined timetable for his return to baseball activities, but it’s difficult to imagine him allowing this new injury to heal and still having enough time to build up to a return this season.

Now 33 years of age, Cespedes is in the third season of what has become an ill-fated four-year, $110MM deal with the Mets. The slugger was an instant hero in Queens upon being acquired minutes before the 2015 non-waiver trade deadline, as he led the Mets’ World Series charge with a .287/.337/.604 performance down the stretch. He returned on a three-year, $75MM contract that allowed him to opt out after the first year of said deal and, after posting a superlative .280/.354/.530 line and making the NL All-Star team, he did just that. Cespedes was viewed as a vital piece of the team’s offense at that point, and his four-year deal to return to the club was generally met with favorable reviews.

Hamstring troubles limited him to just 81 games in the first season of the new contract, though when healthy, his .292/.352/.540 slash was right in line with expectations. His offensive performance in 2018 was strong as well (.262/.325/.496), but he was limited to an even smaller set of 38 games, thanks to the aforementioned heel troubles that ultimately required surgery. Now, it appears possible, if not likely, that Cespedes won’t even match that total in 2019. He’s being paid $29MM both this season and next. Specifics of the policy aren’t known, but it’s been reported that Cespedes’ contract, as was the case with David Wright, is insured, so the team won’t be out that entire $29MM sum this season.

What part can’t you make up? People regularly get injured, and 99% of them aren’t playing baseball or any sport for that matter when something freak occurs.

Of course they can’t void his contract. It’s not like he got injured doing something stupid, like a wheelie on a motorcycle going 120…

He got paid, now the work ethic and commitment to the contract takes a backseat. And people wonder why teams aren’t eager to dole out large contracts to questionable players. I don’t feel sorry for the Mets, it was a bad deal from day 1 but remember it’s always the few that make it bad for the many.

5 games under .500 Just lost Lugo. Cano showing his age. Ramos showing his age. Conforto hurt. Just got swept by the worst team in the NL and it wasn’t close. The GM had to have a press conference to say they were not going to fire the manager, YET.

The ship is sinking. Its not going to float in 2020 either with the old guys even older and no one ready to help the big league squad.

Their choices are to sell now when the player’s value is highest or wait until July. If they wait until the offseason they lose a huge amount of value.

If they do nothing, which is what you are suggesting, then they have all those guys and can’t get better.

Their only chance to get better is to trade away some pieces.

Both Gore and Urias are untouchable. Not even a Thor that is pitching well would be worth giving up those guys.

The package mentioned of Patino, Naylor, and Reed with another arm like Quantrill would be a huge return for a struggling Syndergaard.

Patino is the #45 overall prospect in baseball and immediately would be the #1 in the Mets system. Naylor is the #9 in the Padres system and would immediately be a top 5 prospect in the Mets system. Reed would become a top 10 prospect in the Mets system. That alone is a huge haul for the Mets. Add another arm like Quantrill and that should be an offer the Mets can’t refuse.

If the Mets turned that deal down, they deserve to continue losing. I doubt Preller has offered that much.

Wouldn’t Syndergaard require a haul similar to Chris Sale (Yoan Moncada, the #1 prospect at the time, Michael Kopech, a future ace, Luis Alexander Basabe, high upside toolsy prospect) or am I missing something here?

Naylor, Patino, Reed. The guys he mentioned. 2 would be top 5 prospects in just about any system in baseball. Reed would be top 20 in the Mets system. Throw in an arm that is closer to the majors like Quantrill and that is a huge return for Syndergaard.

Bad luck for him and the Mets… this kind of thing could happen to anyone… we are all fragile when it comes down to it, freak accidents happen, but to blame him is not right. He certainly didn’t get injured on purpose. Every single guy playing baseball would rather be healthy and out there on the field playing rather laid up injured. It’s a short career, players love playing, no one wants to miss games.

The high priced guys like Cespedes that isn’t playing and Cano that isn’t playing well are killing their ability to compete. There is no money to add more personnel because of the ownership.

So when will they start jettisoning some of the few valuable trade pieces they do have? Its inevitable that they will do it, so will it happen early so they maximize the return or will they f it all up and wait until late July?

The Mets are just all over the place. They convert an agent over to a GM who then goes all out to make a contender out of a bad team in one offseason when the NL East was looking fairly strong coming in. Seems to me that in history the teams that try to build a team in a single offseason have to press and end up making ill advised moves on the wrong guys. Trading for Cano was a head scratcher to me. Everyone out there is trying to avoid the mega deal because of the back end and they let the Mariners get his best then brought him in. The Braves and Phillies have a decent window opening and most thought the Nats would be better. Why now? I know you got some stud starters but why not turn them into big prospect returns and have your window open while others are starting to close a bit. The Mets have money don’t let them fool you they just spend it really poorly

It might be time to have Yoenis Cespedes mercifully put to sleep. Poor fellow…

Cespedes, my guess is a quad or motorcycle accident. Is an ankle fracture really related to riding horses.

Good thing that deGrom, Harvey, Syndergaard, Matz, and Wheeler led the Mets to all of those World Series championships because if they didn’t this season would be sad.

    Yoenis Cespedes
    4 years/$110M (2017-20)
re-signed by NY Mets as a free agent 11/30/16
    17:$22.5M, 18:$29M, 19:$29M, 20:$29.5M
    full no-trade protection
matches Alex Rodriguez at $27.5M average annual value, second-largest AAV ever for position player behind Miguel Cabrera’s $29.2M

    Giancarlo Stanton
    13 years/$325M (2015-27), plus 2028 option
signed extension with Miami 11/19/14, avoiding arbitration
    15:$6.5M, 16:$9M, 17:$14.5M, 18:$25M, 19:$26M, 20:$26M, 21:$29M, 22:$29M, 23:$32M, 24:$32M, 25:$32M, 26:$29M, 27:$25M, 28:$25M club option ($10M buyout)

Looks like a bad year for New York fans and both of these players situations keep getting weirder.

If there ever were examples of why an MLB team does not want to get into long term contracts these two contracts along with Miguel Cabrera, Pujols, Carl Crawford, Hanley Ramirez, Ellsbury, Sandoval, etc top the list.

The best team in baseball has the lowest payroll

And it’s not really close. The Tampa Bay Rays.

So why do these big market teams keep paying the big bucks?

Any predictions on what Bryce Harper or Manny Machado does over the course of their contracts?

    LOL
