Suspensions Issued After Pirates/Reds Brawl

By Mark Polishuk | August 1, 2019 at 2:44pm CDT

Tuesday’s enormous brawl between the Pirates and the Reds has, unsurprisingly, led to multiple suspensions on both teams.  Major League Baseball announced a total of 32 games’ worth of suspensions for six players, as well as a six-game suspension for Reds manager David Bell and a two-game ban for Pirates manager Clint Hurdle.  All six players will appeal their penalties, while Bell and Hurdle will begin serving their bans immediately.

Here is the full list of suspensions issued…

  • Pirates’ Keone Kela, 10 games
  • Reds’ Amir Garrett, eight games
  • Pirates’ Jose Osuna, five games
  • Reds’ Jared Hughes, three games
  • Pirates’ Kyle Crick, three games
  • Indians’ Yasiel Puig (then a member of the Reds), three games

Fines were also issued to all six players.  Joey Votto, Philip Ervin, and Trevor Williams also received fines, as did players on both teams who participated in the fracas despite being on the injured list.

Beyond just the brawl that began when Garrett rushed from the mound to go after the Pirates’ dugout, the suspensions cover a wide range of incidents during the game.  Kela received the harshest punishment both “for his role in instigating the bench-clearing incident,” as per the league’s official release, and for throwing at Derek Dietrich’s head in the seventh inning.

There has been no love lost between the Pirates and Reds this season, as reflected in Hurdle’s suspension.  The Pittsburgh skipper was cited for not only “his Club’s conduct during the incident,” but also for “multiple intentional pitches thrown at Dietrich this season.”  Hurdle still received less punishment than Bell, whose six-game suspension was “for returning to the field following his ejection; escalating the incident with his aggressive actions; his Club’s intentional pitch at [Starling] Marte; and his numerous ejections this season.”

I’d argue Kela started it by throwing at someone’s head. And if you wanted to go deeper, I bet none of this happens if Archer doesn’t throw at Dietrich for bat-flipping.

So now we are gonna have new sets of rules that go beyond just being ejected. You are now saying the umps messed up so bad that he should have been ejected and banned 10 games? Does he get 10 games if a fight doesn’t break out AFTER another pitcher charges the dugout? After Hughes hit Marte it could have been over.

Archer didn’t throw at him for “bat-flipping.” He sent a message a foot and a half BEHIND Deitrich for standing there watching. not bat flipping. We have to learn to separate bullish behavior with bat flipping. Bat flipping is not bullish, it can be fun. But Deitrich was acting like he’s bigger than Bonds when he hit a second inning homerun. he wasn’t excited, and flipping the bat. Two different things. Dietrich is a heel. He wants to be. Bat flipping can be fun. It doesn’t make you a bad guy. But I think Dietrich likes to be considered a heel. It’s kind of his role and how he wants to feel to be better. That’s his thing, it’s ok. Not a role model, but if he’s effective, he helps you win. You need all types of guys in baseball. But bat flipping has nothing to do with it. That whole situation could have ended after the message was sent.

You’re an idiot, They hit Dietrich in an earlier series, He was tired of being hit, so when he hit the 3 HR’s against them, He did watch them because that was his retaliation against them. So what do they do, Kela admits to throwing at him, But Huges didn’t throw at Marte’s head, He hit him low in retaliation, Amir will forever be vilified in Pittsburgh, But He is a Hero here, Everyone wants to hit Deitrich, Hell the last series against Brewers he was hit 6X did you see us start a fight there? Sure the Pirates didn’t like it and threw at him, but did they really need to start a fight when the retribution was returned? Pirates are nothing more than wanna be gangsters.

And Puig, he tried over and over to get it going again and only got 3 games. Dudes an animal. Osuna got 5 games for what, pulling people off the pile? I’m fine with Kela getting 10, but Hughes should get at least 5 for actually hitting someone. Puig should get at least 5 but gets a pass because of the trade. Torre’s an idiot. Compete BS.

Problem is guys are starting their swings as the pitcher is releasing the ball. Even if you are not Rizzo and have your hands over the plate just standing there., many times guys are hit either checking their swing or in the case of pitchers having their hands over the plate and hit trying to pull the bat back when trying to bunt. Hand injuries will happen even when the pitch is not really inside. a lot of times pitches are just off the plate inside and the batter gets hit in the hands.

Kela didn’t even get ejected from the game at any point. He should definitely appeal. Reds threw a fastball right over Marte’s head earlier in the game. No different than the pitch to Dietrich. You just don’t know about it because the Pirates didn’t act like a bunch of clowns and become completely unhinged.

Because the Pirates are well known for having a cramp-the-plate strategy, and they’ve done that for years. Being hit plenty doesn’t mean pitchers going out of their way to hit them all the time.

The Pirates have hit Reds batters 5 times this year. 2 of those were by Agrazal yesterday. At the time of the brawl, Reds batters had been hit by Pirates pitchers three times this year. At the time of the brawl, Pirates hitters had been hit by Reds pitchers 6 times this year.

Over the past 5 years:Reds have hit Pirate hitters 47 times. The Pirates have hit Reds hitters 41 times. (In 2016, the Reds hit Pirate batters 20 times in that season alone).

My God. The humanity. Those poor little babies. How have the Reds ever managed to survive the monster that is the Pittsburgh Pirates. I clearly see now why David Bell so desperately needs a diaper change.

MLB should just force Keone Kela and Amir Garrett to take one at-bat each with the opposing pitcher pitching to them. That would put an end to this nonsense real quick. Coin flip to decide who bats first.

They should also force Clint Hurdle to take an Alzheimers screening and drug test before allowing him back into the dugout.

That actually was done in hockey, where a player swung a stick at the back of a player’s head a few years ago. The player swinging the stick actually got charged with assault and battery.

Not a bad idea. Dietrich should pursue it.

You said he swing a stick, he did not. You said he suckered him in the back of the head and he didn’t do that either. While he did jump him, the way he grabbed on and they fell to the ice caused the damage.

Marty McSorley hit Donald Brashear upside the head with his stick and he flopped to the ice.

Trevor Bauer and Yasiel Puig are also both known to be massive headaches for teams. Both have the same amount of talent as Kela. And yet teams will still willingly throw around prospects to acquire them. I don’t think he’ll have much of a problem at all.

Bauer and Puig are much more valuable than Kela. Lol. Bauer is a #2 starter, Puig is a starting RF, while Kela is a middle reliever. Not even comparable. He is good at his role but.Middle relievers grow on trees.

Kela is a setup man and a former closer for the Rangers. He’s good at what he does and has been on a tear lately. Puig isn’t very valuable anyways. He hits for power, but not for contact, and he’s only slightly above average on defense. He hasn’t been that good since 2014

Actually you will not hear about Puig from anyone in Cincy, We have not had 1 problem with him even close to being a headache, He was loved here. So all you have is 1 other team that he might have been a headache too and that was when he first came up in the league and he was immature and showing up pitchers.

    But, the Pirates started it…?

Seriously? That’s an incredibly ignorant way to look at it.

Where to start? Kela was the one who threw the first pitch. He was the one who initiated what led to the brawl. And I’m not an advocate of “the unwritten rule” and throwing at guys, but at least Hughes did it right. He put a ball into the batters legs. Kela head hunted. Do you actually believe what you wrote, or are you just being biased?

Sorry but if it doesn’t warrant being tossed from the game why does it warrant the most games suspended? Are you creating new rules for baseball here? He initiated as you say, but the reds could have done nothing. But bottom line to me is that he wasn’t tossed unlike bell. I guess every high pitch now will deserve a suspension even if the batter isn’t hit and the pitcher isn’t tossed. Pretty lame excuse you come up with with the initiating, true initiation would have been bench clearings at that point but then Hughes needed to send a message. Then who charged the Pirates dugout? Seems to me the reds kept the fire going

Of course they did. Kela was the whole reason anything happened though. That’s why he got the most games. That’s how it always has been. Saying he should’ve got less games than a pitcher just because he missed (the head of all places) wasn’t a good way to put it.

Garrett had to get the most amount of games. One may have started it, Garrett escalated it. He did not have to run off the mound to take on the entire team. Dumb on so many levels.

Some of you don’t want to see pitchers brush a hitter back for showboating. Yet some of you wanted Jake Marisnick to get thrown at. Which one is it? Do you want players to police themselves or do you want it completely out of the game? Yes, you will say Marisnick deserved it for injuring Lucroy. A hitter pimping bombs is entertaining? Homeruns are hit by everyone. Homeruns are no longer special. So long as the pitch is not at the head I am fine with the brushback. Hitters are given so much leniency and favors in today’s game it has become less entertaining.

Pirates fan here…. Kela should be suspended for the rest of the year. There is no place in baseball for throwing at someone’s head. Garrett should be out for 10, if not 20 games. Professional athletes are ambassadors of the sport and should be expected to conduct themselves accordingly. If benches clear and everyone joins, yeah it happens, but to leave the mound and charge a dugout is crossing a line and setting a bad example for every youth out there watching.

Hurdle getting two games is a good move too. I have no clue if he condones it or not, and honestly not a single person commenting here knows the truth either. Regardless of his intentions, he is responsible for the actions of his team.

Yes I do, you have no facts to prove Hurdle told anyone to headhunt, that’s an assumption. What Bell did should have dire consequences as a player or manager who has been ejected should be considered almost like a fan entering the field, they have been forbidden by the umpires to be anywhere near the team or the field. It undermines the umps and it sets a horrible precedent. If you or the league could prove Hurdle ordered it he’d get a lot more than 2 games.

I think amir Garrett should have received the most without a chance to appeal. Even though it’s his right. In this situation Keone Kela and Amir Garrett minimum 12 games each. When they appeal both get 10 games. Since its 10 and 8 games for them. Neither of them should be reduced.

Since he began managing the Rockies in 2002, and including 2010 when he didn’t manage, Clint Hurdle managed teams have hit the fifth most batters in baseball in that time frame. This isn’t a question of where it starts.

That’s going to happen when you have Charlie Morton on your team for 7 of those seasons. He single-handedly accounts for 74 of them.

People might not have noticed with the success that Morton had in his 2 seasons with the Astros also came 29 HBP. (He’s led the league in HBP 4 different times)

In the 10 years before Clint Hurdle was manager: Pirates pitchers avg. 63.2 HBP/yr.

In the Hurdle years, Pirates pitchers have avg. 68 HBP/yr.

Seems like if Hurdle has a “throw at every hitter” edict going, the players aren’t doing a great job of following it.

Should also mention, in the 3 full Hurdle seasons since Morton left: avg. 65 HBP/yr..

If Hurdle has hit the 5th most, what about numbers 2-4? Puig got his time for totally losing control again. And David Bell, in his first year as a manager, has already set a Reds record for ejections, not vs. just the Pirates either, he likes to scream & cuss at the umpires, whine at press conferences, desperately to get everyone to believe he & his team are the victims in every game. He should be fired for total loss of control of himself & his team. Never has a manager done less with more in history.

It’s one of those misleading stats because Hurdle is one of the few managers who has had a job just about every season since 2002, so of course he’s going to have one of the highest number of HBP, because he’s also managed one of the highest number of games since then.

Guess how many current MLB managers had an MLB managing job in 2002? It’s that same number of 5: Bochy, Maddon, Francona, Hurdle & Gardenhire.

Hurdle is a cowardly little man. I don’t believe in this retaliation the Reds did either, but at least they didn’t hide behind pitches 60’ 6”. Pitch better and people won’t be able to admire their long balls.

I’d argue the opposite. Cinci fans are delusional. Maybe they both are.

Good point. Maybe I am too. But I’m certain that cinci is. Pirate fans probably are too. Most teams fans are homers.
