Reds Designate Jose Siri For Assignment

By Steve Adams | January 27, 2020 at 5:22pm CDT

The Reds announced Monday that they’ve designated outfielder Jose Siri for assignment. His spot on the 40-man roster goes to fellow outfielder Nicholas Castellanos, whose previously reported four-year, $64MM contract has now been formally announced.

Siri, 24, was considered to be among Cincinnati’s best farmhands just two years ago. FanGraphs, in fact, ranked him near the back end of the game’s 100 best prospects (No. 93 overall) heading into the 2018 campaign. At that point, he was a 22-year-old who was fresh off an impressive .293/.341/.530 slash with 24 homers and 46 steals in the Class-A Midwest League.

Since that time, however, Siri has turned in a pair of disappointing seasons, logging a combined on-base percentage south of .300 in 2018-19 between Class-A Advanced, Double-A and Triple-A. This past season, Siri mustered a lackluster .237/.300/.357 showing through 517 plate appearances in the minors, and he’s struggled even more heavily in the Dominican Winter League (.196/.264/.411 in 125 plate appearances).

Siri has a minor league option remaining and is a plus runner who has been touted as a potentially plus defensive player, making him a reasonable bounceback target for a club that’s lacking outfield depth. The Reds will have a week to trade him, place him on outright waivers or release him.

Prior to last season some people were thinking he could make the leap to MLB…the potential is there but maybe his will isn’t strong enough?

all the pieces need to fall in place, if they do for him he will thrive wherever he gets the chance. I know that sounds stereotypical but he’s definitely got a full toolbox

We already have old and young reclamation projects. The Giants are killing me with all this trash in and trash out.
The Giants have the money and should eat Crawford’s & Belts contracts because they look like they’ve lost there fire and desire.
Actually, last season the whole team looked that way except for Yaz & Panda !!
They need to get some life back.

Worked in 2015 too. Calculator boys think they’ve changed baseball but it’s still solid fundamentals and good health that wins titles.

If you haven’t noticed the sea change in baseball the last 20 years I don’t know what to tell you. The “calculator boys” [weak and sophomoric] have changed the game in ways never thought possible by the dinosaurs. And the best part is, knuckle dragging lummoxes like you don’t even notice because deep down you know you understand the game better even though you’re too thick to admit it.

After a little research turns out this kid suffered a thumb ligament injury early in 2018, hence the bad numbers.
His numbers got better in 2019 but not to his 2018 performance.
I think this kid gets traded because there’s a ton of upside here. Lot’s of Giants fans have already chimed in so here’s one more: Farhan, go get this guy!

Thanks for the ligament injury heads up. I’d wonder how he could have developed power and just as quickly watch it disappear.

He has the defensive abilities to play CF now from what I’ve read about him in the past. His bat just hasn’t shown up yet or may never be much. He’s fast and plays good D could be a late inning sub for someone out there.

Classic defensive-replacement type 4th or 5th outfielder. He can’t hit so his only way to the big show is on his defense and speed.

Still believe Cincinnati has a trade in the works. Red’s have a week to trade Siri. Perhaps a N.Senzel, J.Siri, H.Greene package for an example to Cleveland for F.Lindor. All signs are pointing that way.
