Ramon Laureano’s Suspension Reduced To Four Games

By Steve Adams | August 14, 2020 at 11:21am CDT

Athletics outfielder Ramon Laureano’s six-game suspension has been reduced to four games after he appealed the punishment earlier this week, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports (via Twitter). He’ll begin serving that four-game ban tonight.

Major League Baseball initially brought forth a six-game punishment after Laureano charged the Astros’ dugout during Sunday’s game. He’d been plunked twice that game and three times in the series, and Laureano was rather clearly goaded by Astros hitting coach Alex Cintron, who has been suspended 20 games as a result of his role in inciting the benches-clearing fracas.

The extra two games of Laureano are no small perk for the A’s, who’ve gotten out to a 13-6 start and currently lead the AL West by four games. Laureano has gotten out to a .262/.398/.462 start at the plate while playing excellent defense. The A’s can turn to either Mark Canha or Chad Pinder if they prefer to stick with options already on the 28-man roster. If they plan to dip into their 60-man player pool, the A’s have Dustin Fowler, Luis Barrera and Skye Bolt as alternatives who are already on the 40-man roster.

Difference between laureano and Cintron. laureano admits he was wrong for charging the coach and he shouldn’t have let the coach get under his skin. Cintron meanwhile tries to claim he is innocent and did nothing wrong. Never apologizes for starting the altercation.
Baker should be ashamed that he hired a coach that acts like a 4 Y O child. Even astros fans know that what cintron did was uncalled for.

Spanish speakers familiar with dominican/venezuelan slang identified some of the words in the video as Cintron calling Ramon’s mother a “****sucking witch who’d be a wh*re if anyone bothered to pay her”.

Baker didn’t get to hire any of the coaching staff. He inherited it because the Astros manager got fired due to the sign stealing saga…

But yes, Cintron should be fired. Inciting a fight with an opposing player and then hiding behind your own players is reason enough and then add in the fact it highly violated Covid protocols.

Cintron was part of the sign stealing and was not a player.

          Players can’t be fired

But the team needs to get rid of all the loose ends (non players) from that era.

Its a bad look and he just made it so much worse

I think it’s actually the difference between the Astros organization as a whole and the rest of the league. They have yet to show any sort of ethical standards and it’s clear that leadership does not care that they are enabling this kind of behavior. It begins and ends with Crane, org health is at a severe low.

Baker is old school so his reactions aren’t unexpected. You’re right about Cintron who is 41 spouting off to a 25 y.o. and admitting no fault. That kind of attitude still permeates through the Astros’ culture.

Get it through your head guys, it was Manfred who was afraid the union would through it all out. Mr Crane had nothing to do with it, Manfred wouldn’t have been able to do anything if he didn’t give the Astros immunity to find out the truth. If he would have given immunity to the Red Sox and the Yankees a lot would also come out but that won’t happen.

Actually the angels did that to a A’s player when he was hit in the series after the Astros. Angels players were mocking the Astros for the low immature children they are. A’s players were kidding with the angle players about the Astros. That is what they should do have fun instead of acting like a baby like Cintron did.

I don’t really take a side either way on this particular incident and whether it deserved a suspension, but it’s so ridiculous that seemingly every suspension gets reduced on appeal. Why bother even giving a suspension in the first place? Makes the whole system look a joke. There should be a set outline for what suspension an offence carries, with a panel of disciplinary officers able to add to it if they deem it more severe (and this can’t be appealed, only the suspension itself can be – if for example they claim they’re not guilty of the act at all.)

    Reply
    • ukpadre

So for example, deliberately throw at a batter = 10 games; charge a catcher outside of the base running line = 3 games; get thrown out for verbals at an umpire = 1 game; throw a punch = 5 games, etc. (FYI: these are just random numbers for illustration, not serious thoughts on exact punishments).

Mlb knows they’ll appeal. I dont think I’ve ever seen a suspension for more than 3 games not be appealed.

As such, I’m sure the MLB knows players will appeal multi game suspension and over suspend them knowing they’ll appeal down to the actual number theyd give them.

      Never seen a double appeal.

Most suspensions are so far longer then for similar instances like when Grienke was charged and broke his collar bone by like Quinton I think and was suspended for less. It seems that while MLB said no pro rating the suspensions for the season, they have been suspending players for longer then normal for offenses and the appeals have been bringing them more in line with normal.

Actually Pro wrestling is real to the extent of what they do in the ring. It is scripted and the winner is pre-determined unless the one who is supposed to win gets hurt and can’t continue. They are athletes but as I said, they are not competing to win because the matches are scripted. It is apples and oranges to compare them to sports that are not scripted as you say. The participants are still athletes or else they could not do what they do.

Wrestling is choreographed where the moves are planned ahead of time reducing the chance of injury.

They dont want to encourage fighting when the people fighting are being paid 20M+ at times. Losing a guy for 6 months from a fighting injury is a bad investment. Players make to much now for fighting to be allowed.

The outcomes are pre-determined in wrestling, but the athletiscm is very real, arc. Brock Lesnar, Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler were all MMA fighters. Kurt Angle and Mark Henry were Olympic athletes. Rinku Singh played professional baseball. They perform real athletic feats, and sometimes suffer very real injuries. If you think it’s easy, go to a training school and just try running the ropes. I think you’d have a new appreciation for the difficulty.

Old school MMA was so much funner. Now its all people doing Muy Thai for striking and some form of Jiu Jitsu for grappling. It was way better in early pride and some of the others when it was a boxer vs a kung fu dude, and a wrestler vs a Karate champ. It was fun seeing different disciplines match up now its so much more homogenous training where they all fight the same.

I somewhat agree, Darkside. I think if a pitcher hits a batter, it’s fair to let the batter square up. Hockey settles their issues one-on-one and it works.

I don’t see the 20+ man melees as a particularly good look for the sport, though.

This year, with the need to social distance, all contact really should be avoided though.

I bet things were said during the fight that was worse than what Cintron said. A player called a pitcher a gay slur a couple years ago. He didn’t get 20 games.

Wake up! This is a suspension driven by the revelations this past offseason. A complete overreach. Stop trying to bring normal jobs into this argument.
