Dodgers, Rangers Fail To Reach Lance Lynn Deal

By Steve Adams | August 31, 2020 at 3:00pm CDT

3:00pm: The Dodgers and Rangers were ultimately unable to come together on a Lynn trade, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

2:40pm: The two sides are still far apart, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweets. That said, MLB.com’s Jon Morosi also hears that the Dodgers have intensified their pursuit. There’s room for both of those things to be true, of course, and it’s not uncommon for major deals to come together in the final 15 to 20 minutes running up to the trade deadline.

2:34pm: The Dodgers have “stepped up” their efforts to pry right-hander Lance Lynn away from the Rangers in the past hour, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports (via Twitter). MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan, however, hears that the likeliest scenario is still that Lynn stays put, barring a last-minute increase in the offer from an interested suitor (Twitter link).

The 33-year-old Lynn, signed through the 2021 season, is regarded as arguably the best starting pitcher available on the trade market. Since signing in Texas, he’s pitched to a 3.33 ERA with 10.5 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 259 2/3 innings of work while averaging 6 1/3 frames per outing.

Adding Lynn would be a luxury for a Dodgers club that can already has the likes of Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, Dustin May, Julio Urias, Ross Stripling and Tony Gonsolin on its depth chart. That said, Buehler is currently sidelined by a blister on his hand, and the Dodgers typically thrive in large part due to their largely unrivaled depth. It’s also possible that a younger arm like Gonsolin could go back to Texas in that type of arrangement, though that’s only my own speculation.

The Dodgers farm is so deep, no need to give up a player that can contribute now and has that high of a ceiling. Gray, Cartaya, Ruiz, Hoese are all guys that could bring back Gallo.

And why would the Dodgers want a power hitting career .210 hitter? He makes Joc Pederson look like the most disciplined hitter on the Dodger team!

They need Lynn more than Gallo. Scoring runs is not the issue for the Dodgers. They could get more consistency on offense but Gallo is not going to help you there. Starting pitching has been good but Stripling is struggling. Wood is hurt. Buehler has a blister. Urias is inconsistent with his fastball command and May is still very young. So I can see why they’re looking at Lynn. Not terribly excited but he can be an upgrade over Stripling and Wood. Doubt the Dodgers will give up much for Lynn. Ruiz, May, Lux, etc. Asinine. If Texas asks for too much they’ll simply say no thanks.

The Dodgers should be scared. The Padres may now have the best lineup in baseball. And their starting rotation is looking pretty good. This is exciting.

      Starting lineup by playoff time:

      1) Trent Grisham, CF
      2) Fernando Tatis Jr., SS
      3) Manny Machado, 3B
      4) Eric Hosmer, 1B
      5) Tommy Pham, LF
      6) Mitch Moreland, DH
      7) Wil Myers, RF
      8) Jake Cronenworth, 2B
      9) Austin Nola, C

      Starting rotation:

      1) Mike Clevinger, RHP
      2) Dinelson Lamet, RHP
      3) Chris Paddack, RHP
      4) Zach Davies, RHP
      5) Garrett Richards, RHP

Look at the stats and metrics. You will see that I am correct. The Padres even come out ahead on starting pitching this year. The big difference (and it is big) is relief pitching. That’s why LA is 5 games up. But some upgrades were made. We’ll see what happens.

So we’re just going to disregard all prior information in favor of a 35 game sample which shows a negligible difference?

No. But we aren’t going to disregard the sample size this year either. Dodgers have the track record, sure. I simply made a comment about how the Padres were outperforming the Dodgers offensively and out-pitching them (starting pitching) THIS year. That was before Nola, Clevinger, Moreland. The gap between the two has shrunk. And I think the Pads have a better team offensively. I know you disagree and that’s wonderful. But baseball in the National League West just got really interesting.

Tipsy so the correct wording would be that your using opinions and acting as they are facts. Huge flaw in your logic. Most of the padres games thus far have come against rockies, Diamondbacks, rangers, mariners all terrible bottom feeding teams in majors. The only impressive wins they have had are against Houston even though they weren’t a full health and without verlander. Sure in this small sample size you might be correct but over a full season and players not outperforming there projections it’s not close. Don’t be suprised when Padres get knocked out in round 1.

And yet they only have one more homer than the Padres.

Padres are 5 games back and are not likely to catch the Dodgers. But once the playoffs start and they’re both in, that matters very little.

Padres aside this fits Friedman’s MO. Starting pitching is absolutely the Dodgers #1 need and Friedman normally would be pretty adverse to making a significant offer if the player were just a rental. Having a little more control on Lynn makes it more likely the Dodgers would go for the home run, here.

If the rangers don’t trade him it’s another deadline failure (one of many for this regime). Really, what value does he have for a team of misfits? So you wins some games you should lose and miss out on drafting in the top 10.

It’s been 10 years since the Rangers have been good and five since they’ve been relevant. The seat should be hot for JD and company – especially seeing how much success former FO members have had elsewhere.

Hope I’m wrong but seems like another deadline squandered and rebuilt put off even further.

I can see why the Dodgers inquired and tried. There are some question marks with the starting rotation. Lynn would have been an upgrade but not significant enough to warrant a high prospect. But overall would rather have them not obtain Lynn than paying up too much for him.

Sorry buddy but Lynn isn’t the answer we are looking for! Best record in baseball with so many pitchers that we have to send them to satellite field. This is why the rangers won’t be good anytime soon, overvalue mediocre talent. Yes Lynn having a good year but never been a tor outside of this year, rangers selling high and ended up with nothing.

Lynn was not going to be a difference maker. An upgrade over Wood/Stripling? Probably, but I don’t think he’s any better than Urias, May or Gonsolin, and obviously not better than Kershaw or Buehler. He’s a veteran arm though that could have been useful but in a short series maybe at best he’s your #3, but obviously Urias, May or Gonsolin can easily fill that role. Nice to have but not necessary. Playoffs are a crapshoot especially the way they laid out this year. A three game followed by a five game series. Anyone can get upset in the first two rounds. For that reason I wouldn’t go all in this season, especially if you have a WS type of team going forward.

I mean considering the Dodgers problems in the playoffs I would have preferred (if I was you) to run a veteran like Lynn over those young guys, especially considering how hot he has been. But who knows? Like I said above, I betcha we will hear later that Texas asked for someone like Ruiz and the Dodgers decided to balk, I can’t blame either side, it is kind of a weird year to go “all in.”

Seeing as smith is having a pretty bad year I think ruiz would be a possibility to stick between the 2 it’s very hard to find catcher that can hit and dodgers have a few of those. Lynn is a great pitcher but dodgers never let urgency get in the way of long term projection of the team. Lynn doesnt make me instantly feel like we are winning a ring with his inclusion. Also Lynn postseason numbers are over 4.8 era so it doesn’t appear he has that dog in him when it matters most. With may and kershaw performing at a high level and buehler steadily tightening his form Lynn wasn’t necessary. Imo padres paid a huge price for an aging pitcher who has a history of injuries and already had tj.

And yeah Lynn doesn’t automatically make the Dodgers the favorite to win the series but it would have been nice. Especially considering Clayton himself has had mixed success in the postseason. I wonder how much GMs actually think about that when they make trades? Marco Scutaro would have been worth 20 billion if they do, still hate that guy (jokingly).

imindless: Will Smith’s batting average is maybe the best example of why batting average is no longer important: Smith’s OPS is nearly .900, despite being under .200 for average. He’s averaging a higher exit velocity than Corey Seager(!) on balls in play, and he apparently chases out of the strike zone less than any other hitter in baseball. And he hits 9th most nights he plays.

Saying that Will Smith is actually fine is probably an understatement.

Niceeeeeeeee. Padres can definitely take Buehler, Kershaw, May, Gonsolin and Stripling. Lynn would’ve made them scary.

A package including INF Michael Busch or RHSP Bobby Miller could be in the works

Way to go on not trading. already have a deep lineup and great farm why trade right now. All San Diego did is kill their farm system and just created a new team and with that many new guys probably won’t have great chemistry. Best part is dodgers have played against a few of the players they traded for and beat them.
