Giants Designate Chris Shaw, Aramis Garcia, Jordan Humphreys

By Connor Byrne | November 20, 2020 at 6:45pm CDT

The Giants have designated first baseman/outfielder Chris Shaw, catcher Aramis Garcia and right-hander Jordan Humphreys for assignment. They added outfielder Alexander Canario and righties Kervin Castro, Camilo Doval and Gregory Santos to their 40-man roster in corresponding moves.

Shaw was once a well-regarded prospect for the Giants, but the 27-year-old hasn’t gotten an extensive look in the majors yet. He’s the owner of a .153/.244/.222 line in 82 plate appearances as a Giant. Like Shaw, Garcia was seen as a promising farmhand in the past, but he stumbled to a .229/.270/.419  mark in 111 trips to the plate in San Francisco from 2018-19.

Humphreys was the return the Giants received from the Mets for outfielder Billy Hamilton last August. The deal could go down as a wash for both sides, as Hamilton is now a free agent after making little impact with the Mets and Humphreys hasn’t contributed to the Giants. The 24-year-old barely pitched at all from 2018-19 because of arm problems.

Churn on Farhan don’t bother giving Humphreys a chance to prove himself just move on to the next shinny object that catches your attention!

He’s a 24-year-old who has pitched 2 innings in 3 years. There’s a very decent chance they re-sign him to a Minor League deal.

But there was very, very little chance he remained on the roster through the winter, whether it was Rule 5 protection, or to make room for a free agent signing.

Humphreys hasn’t pitched above A ball. I doubt any team would want to keep him on there 40 man roster.

He traded for him for some reason. At the time most people thought Farhan turned Billy Hamilton into an interesting prospect with dark horse potential. There was no minor league season last year so he never once saw this kid throw a single pitch in a real game. We need pitching and a spreadsheet more than likely convinced FZ that his spin rate wasn’t good enough or he threw 2% more fly balls than he should have. Until the Giants actually show they can win something under current management I will remain skeptical.

The Mets, despite how pathetically awful they were ran, were not giving up legitimate prospects for a guy like Billy Hamilton.

Humphreys came with tremendous amounts of risk, and the Giants likely wanted his roster spot for guys that are a little less risky.

For someone who demands a lot, you’re getting awfully upset over extremely minor moves. Jordan Humphreys was unlikely to contribute to the Giants.

I’m sure the Shaw move will get criticized, but I’m not surprised. I know SOs aren’t considered as bad as they used to be, but Shaw was a SO machine. I saw him a number of times, and I realize it’s anecdotal, but not only did he strike out a lot, but he would sometimes miss the ball by by a foot. I’m no scout, but he never looked like a ballplayer to me.

Mediocre guys like Chris Shaw and Steve Duggar is what constituted a top Giants prospect at the end of the Bobby Evans days. Anyone who thinks Farhan has not been amazing for the Giants is nuts.

It’s funny, even the prospects that Evans traded away for guys like Matt Moore, Will Smith, and Evan Longoria panned out to be massive busts.

Remember the outrage when he traded Arroyo, Susac/Bickford, or even Lucius Fox?

Even the “can’t miss” prospects he stupidly traded were huge misses.

Agreed. I like a lot of our prospects, and will be happy if at leaat a third live up to any potential. That’s just the way it works.

@antibelt My first favorite Giants player was in the top 3 Cy Young winners. I liked him because his teddy bear inspired him. I was young. Next season, alcohol caught up to him at Spring Training. He tore up his shoulder. He was never heard from again.

Actually, he won 24 games. I still remember his good luck teddy bear. I was that age. Of course, they sucked the rest of the decade. I was to young to understand why they didn’t like ‘Boo’.

It’s not like Bobby Evans was a total putz. He got the GM position because he earned it.

        He also drafted Joey Bart.

But there were clear issues with many of his heralded prospects. And the guys Zaidi has cut shows the differences.

I’m old enough to remember when Spec Richardson was GM. He built the Big Red Machine as GM of the Astros. Look it up. I choose to take the long view on player acquisition. Players don’t always fulfill there promise.

Obviously no one now (or after the 2012 WS) complains about losing Tommy Joseph.

Hindsight is 20/20, so it’s easy to understand that it was to the Giants’ benefit now. But Joseph was a legitimately heralded prospect and people got pretty upset when the trade happened.

It made no sense for them to be upset, considering they needed an OF after Melky Cabrera’s suspension, but people got pretty worked up about them making that trade.

Johnjaso, actually I was upset the previous year when the Giants traded for Beltran instead of Pence. I thought they could have put together a better offer to the Astros then Philly did. What a waste that Beltran trade was, in my opinion much worse than the Longoria trade or even the Cutch trade.

I know there are a lot of folks that want to get under Zaidi’s desk but so far he hasn’t done anything except keep aging free-agent-to-be’s because he’s twice chased a pipe-dream when the team played well for a few weeks before the trade deadline.

There is virtually zero organizational pitching depth at both the major league and minor league level and their youngest starting infielder is 32. This team has so many more years of mediocrity ahead of it; Zaidi hasn’t done anything yet.

Criticize Bobby Evans all you want but until Farhan brings home trophies, he’s just a paper tiger.

I’m not a SF fan. They don’t have any depth because it was a massive rebuilding project. Easily a bottom 5 roster in baseball. The only moves he should be doing to improve the ML club were low risk minor moves. Yaz and Dickerson were massive reasons why they were in position to make the playoffs in the shortened season. They are a much more competent organization with Zaidi in charge.

@golandcrabs I think some people don’t understand that the development time for an MLB player is a lot longer than other sports. Pitchers don’t go from High School to the Starting Rotation on an MLB team within 6 months. It is possible in the NBA. In the MLB, High School players are still about 4-5 years away.

I like Tromp much better than Garcia. The Giants now have a full 40 man roster. Am I right on that? If so I’m sure there will be another DFA or two so they will have the flexibility to add a player or two in the Rule 5 draft.

      They have some non-tender options.

Anderson, Peralta, Robertson (who is out of options), Gott. And then between Andrew Suarez, and some other AAAA pitchers, there will be plenty of spots.

Surprised about Canario but they really didn’t want to lose this kid and have a team stash him on the 60 day DL. Shaw’s time had come. And Garcia must not have recuperated enough for the Giants to protect him.

I don’t know what your definition of a top prospect is? But, current crop of top prospects in the Giants is probably better then it has been 30 years. Those busts got traded for better players.

Well that is hard to say, do you give these guys a chance or guys that look to have more upside ahead and behind them? There are in the outfield 3 or 4 other guys behind Shaw and right now you have a fairly full outfield. You DFA the guy and hope you can get a trade out of it if nothing else

Maybe Mets can claim Humphreys and bring him back into the organization. Rather have his arm on the 40 man than Corey Oswalt.

You can’t claim a DFA, they can either be traded or if the time runs out become a FA or accept a minor league assignment. Claiming a guy in the rule 5 has to do with having a guy who is unprotected but enough minor league service time that another team can pick him up as long as he is on that team’s active roster.
