Free Agent Prediction Contest Leaderboard Now Available

By Tim Dierkes | December 23, 2020 at 10:34am CDT

Our new Free Agent Prediction Contest leaderboard is now available!  Over 4,000 MLBTR readers participated in our November prediction contest.  At this point eight of the top 50 free agents from our contest have signed.  Impressively, one person has correctly predicted the signing teams for five of them.  I’ll be updating this leaderboard as additional signings occur throughout the offseason.

I’ve predicted every free agent signing correctly so far, I just forgot to hit the submit button so you’ll just have to take my word for it

Not counting the two SP’s who accepted their QO’s, your top 50 free agents list shows that 9 free agents have signed contracts as I post following the first update.

My mistake. Just now I edited the post to disassociate it from our actual top 50 list, because Robbie Ray signed prior to the contest and I did not include him in it. And I also added substitutes for Stroman and Gausman, so a total of three new players were introduced for the contest (Grossman, Gardner, Miller at the end).

Mine was saved to Google Forms. Try typing in ‘Google’ in your email account and see it the contest doesn’t pop up in a search.

I would say that was a bit of a biased pick for sure. Also have jays signing Treinen and Walker as well so I blew it.

Thanks for running the contest and posting the leaderboard!

I would love to see a grid listing the 50 free agents on one axes and the 30 teams + retirement + overseas on the other, with total numbers of predictions submitted for each combo, so we can see that X number of people predicted Springer to the Mets, Y number of people predicted him to the Blue Jays, Z number to the Red Sox, etc.

It should just be a simple pivot table. If I had the raw data it would be super easy.

I can try to manually download each of the entries, but I’m at my brother’s house for the holidays and all the nieces and nephews and other “family time” can be pretty distracting, so not sure if I’d be able to get it done by tomorrow.

Did anyone actually take this seriously and research team needs, internal options, typical budgets, etc. for each team, or pretty much just wing it with a stiff drink in hand?

The latter applies to me and I have no regrets.

It’s going to be a sad dry year for Cards fans. We appear to be losing the key defensive players in our infield in Yadi and Wong. This coming right after Shildt finally got the team back to playing good defense like their trademark play for so many past years. With little offense and a worse defense where does this leave us? Maybe 3rd place at best.

I can see where a lot of free agents are going to come away from this off season pretty unhappy. The owners just came from a season where they lost their shirts with almost no fans in the seats. They are looking at not having any fans again until probably mid to late May at the earliest and that’s IF these vaccines work. These guys going free agent looking for a gold mine with another team may be in for a disappointment.
