Trade/FA Notes: Yankees, Pirates, Mets, JTR, A’s, Tigers

By Connor Byrne | December 14, 2020 at 11:10pm CDT

It was reported last week that the Yankees and Pirates have discussed Bucs right-hander Jameson Taillon and first baseman Josh Bell. It turns out the Yankees initiated those talks in an “intelligence gathering” effort, according to Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic. Even though he’s still recovering from August 2019 Tommy John surgery, it seems Taillon would be the more difficult player for the Yankees or any other team to pry from Pittsburgh. The club “would have to be blown away to deal” the 29-year-old, writes Biertempfel, who notes that Taillon is on a cheap salary ($2.25MM) and under control through 2022.

  • The Mets made their choice at catcher with the signing of James McCann, whom they added on a four-year, $40MM contract. Before picking up McCann, though, the team had “great conversations” with the best catcher in the game – free agent J.T. Realmuto – president Sandy Alderson told Tim Healey of Newsday and other reporters Monday. However, with other needs to address, the Mets didn’t want to wait around for Realmuto. Alderson noted (via Steve Gelbs of SNY) that the top of the free-agent market is moving at a glacial place.
  • The Athletics “have been in touch with Tommy La Stella’s representatives,” Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets. A’s executive vice president Billy Beane and general manager David Forst have made it clear in the past they’d like La Stella back, but this is the first indication they’re making an effort to re-sign him. The 31-year-old infielder made a good impression on the A’s after they acquired him from the Angels over the summer, wrapping up a very productive two-season run between the teams. La Stella appeared in 55 of 60 regular-season games in 2020 and batted .281/.370/.449 (129 wRC+) with five home runs in 228 plate appearances. And with 27 walks against a mere 12 strikeouts, he ranked first in the majors in K rate and BB/K ratio.
  • Tigers manager AJ Hinch discussed some of the team’s offseasons plans with MLB Network Radio on Monday, per Jason Beck of MLB.com (Twitter links). As you’d expect, one of the Tigers’ priorities is to “enhance” their pitching staff by adding at least one more starter. The Tigers have already been connected to righty Taijuan Walker in the rumor mill, but he’s far from the only affordable starter they could target in free agency. Likewise, the Tigers could choose from any number of free-agent hitters to improve their offense. “The players have to want to come to Detroit,” Hinch said of potential offensive additions. “It has to fit in our budget. We’re being patient, but we’re also being opportunistic when the time comes.”

It’s kind of odd to think that Tommy La Stella should be the A’s number 1 target in free agency, but he is nonetheless. He’s a great player, and a huge addition for the A’s if they can re-sign him.

I said that. I wasn’t referring to anything. I just said that it’s odd to think that somebody as – seemingly – minor as La Stella should be such a big pickup for the A’s.

That is kind of crazy to think, at first, especially with the A’s being a potential contender and whatnot..You’d definitely think they’d be aiming higher than La Stella, Semien probably comes to most people’s minds as who should be their primary target..

HOWEVER, Tommy La Stella has slowly but surely become a low-key EXCELLENT ball player over the past several seasons. I hated seeing him leave Atlanta, and he showed it was for a good reason, he’s definitely matured as a hitter and an extremely versatile quality fielder..

He’s basically that super utility player that every contending team needs, EXCEPT the dude can flat out hit and knows how to consistently get on base!!

IMO, he is an extremely valuable asset, and can be used to eat up a couple roles on your roster. This can give a team the luxury or carrying another arm, a 3rd catcher, another power bat off the bench, a speed demon, etc.

He’s basically 2020’s Ben Zobrist, but with alot less mileage and hitting his stride!! The best part about La Stella is that he is so underrated, he isnt going to command near the amount of money he’s truly worth!! So, smaller budget teams like the A’s can get a potential All-Star at a discounted rate…

I agree that he’s basically viewed as a “seemingly minor” player BUT I think a big part of that is that he’s underrated. I get what you’re saying BUT even if he’s viewed around the league, at least by fans, as a “minor” player — I think in reality his production has been much better than what would typically be thought of as a “minor” player. So yes, the perception is that, but I think the reality is that he’s a much bigger/better player than he tends to get credit for.

Realmuto continues to be linked to the Blue Jays. Would be interesting to see what kind of trade can be had for Danny Jansen. Not sure if teams want him that bad.

I looked at BTV to see what they value Danny Jansen at, and it’s absolutely mind-boggling. 32!!! They say he’s more valuable than Teoscar Hernandez, Lance Mccullers jr., Joey Gallo, and WILSON CONTRERAS!!! I know he’s 25, but he hits like a AAA player. This is why I don’t like BTV lmaoo.

Also, as an avid baseball guy did you see Charlie Pride died today?! He was a pitcher in the Negro League and then played in the Yankees minor league system briefly. Of course, he then went on to be one of the most successful country music artists of all time, selling an incredible 70 million plus records.

Of course Jansen has more trade value than Contreras. Jansen has almost 4 years of control left and, like you said, he’s only 25. He plays good defense at a premium position and hit well in the minors. I’d say that’s accurate on btv’s part.

There’s the whole Jansen can’t hit part that can’t be ignored. Nobody is sure he can. Do not care what BTV rates him nor do 29 other GMs.

I think there’d be a market for him, but I think Kirk would probably be worth more. If you have Realmuto for the 4-6 years, Jansen makes a nice backup and Kirk could be the piece you move.

BTV is fantastic! I think it would be cool when you’re analyzing trade boards, if instead of a simple thumbs up thumbs down, they do a fan rating scale so you can say whether team A has the upper hand or Team B does

Both Kirk and Jansen are traded if Realmuto is signed and Reese is the backup. Jansen is worth more than Reese and Reese is worth more to the Jays as a backup than Jansen. Moreno stays. Adam’s stays.

Kluber is coming back from TJ, so his innings would be limited. The Tigers need someone who could be an innings eater due to the youngsters and Fulmer also being limited. Wainwright, I’d guess, stays in St. Louis. I’m also not exactly sold on Walker, but he’d be a better option than Kluber at this point.

Tigers don’t need free agents to provide leadership. They need low cost flipping type guys who needs to play & recover. Tigers offer a chance for a player to re-establish their value. No other type of free agent matters until 2023 or 2024.

I just want someone in there whose a good leader and can help these young guys out. JV would be fantastic. You’re absolutely correct though, their “statistical value” may not be there. But, wisdom and guidance can go a long way with a young organization. Hinch is going to be busy, & who truly knows how he’s going to handle this. I want good people in this organization that care! DET needs a completely different culture change.

Honestly think the Marlins could be super slept on in 2021. That starting pitching staff just has so much potential and they all pitched well last season. Sanchez, Alcantara, Hernandez, Lopez, then one of Castano, Garrett until someone like Max Meyer or Edward Cabrera are in the majors could sneakily be one of the best rotations in the majors. Mets have tons of potential too, but there’s a lot more question marks. They need to add at least one more bat and one more pitcher.

I think Musgrove is the second most valuable pitcher avaiable, both on the trade market and free agency, after considering avaiaility and what he brings to the table. He’s more likely to be traded than either Snell or Gray and unless the Rockies start shopping around Marquez, I think he’s the next best option to Bauer. So many people underrate him because he plays with the Pirates and doesn’t have the prettiest of surface numbers. He’s a good pitcher in just about every other measurement and has averaged 3 fWAR/150 innings pitched since arriving in Pittsburgh (2018), which sandwiches him in between Jack Flaherty and Zack Greinke in fWAR/150 IP. I honestly think he could get them back a top 60 or so prospect, especially after seeing what the Rangers got back for Lance Lynn.

He’s put up a DRA (deserved run average) below 4 in each of the last three seasons. Last year, he was in the top 80th+ percentile of exit velocity, xERA, xBA, xwOBA, xSLG and whiff rate. He has 2 years of control left, has consistnetly been able to show he can limit home runs and throws six pitches including a fantastic curveball which he started to use way more often this past season. He’s well above avergae in almost every other metric expect for ERA. His ERA is a bit inflated because of the Pirates’ defense. Since 2018, they rank with the third lowest UZR/150, 4th lowest range runs above average, and 8th lowest DRS. According to FanGraphs, they’re the 2nd worst defensive team in baseball from 2018 to 2020. Put Musgrove on a team with a semi-competent defense, and he’s a mid-3 ERA pitcher.

          Really good stuff, @mlb1225.

Where do you find the different pitches that a guy throws? I’ve seen you post similar stuff before. So I don’t think you know that just because you’ve watched him throw a lot.

I like Musgrove, too. Definitely wouldn’t mind seeing the Yanks trade for him.

Baseball Savant shows all the different pitches and a ton of fun graphs and stuff. If you have time, go over there, type in a random player you like, and there will be lists upon lists of graphs and data. It’s really neat for a nerd like me lol. And, relatively close to the bottom, it gives player comparisons to the player you look up.

mlb1225, Musgrove is a very intriguing guy and I think worth quite a bit. His peripherals certainly look better than the ERA would indicate and he’s been pretty steady in that regard. But can you explain his ’20 season. The K rates shot up and so did his walk rates. The luck stats all seemed to stray pretty far from league averages (BABIP, LOB%, HR/FB) but in offsetting directions. The big change in the pitch metrics is that he used the curveball a lot more and at the expense of the fastball. The results are steady, but the way he got to them last year was different. Is he trying to remake himself, or was this just a bit of small sample noise? That would be my biggest concern.

Yanks sniffing around small market teams to steal their talent on the cheap. Using these smaller markets like a farm team. MLB loves the box g markets being successful. Screw the small market!! When a small market finally makes World Series, the PR spin doctors say “see it’s not about the money spent”. Now Snell being shopped. He will end up in a major market. MLB needs a min and max cap!!!

Musgrove is a much better fit than Taillion for the yanks- Yanks dont need to swing for the fences here, they need a stable capable guy that has less risk and flattens the payroll out-

Musgrove checks all those boxes perfectly so good call-

My guess is theres been multiple teams interest in Musgrove so far so the Pirates are playing the high ground right now till more FA SPs come off the board in hopes to get a better package –
It wouldnt even be crazy to give the first half a go for Pitt imo, that Div has blow up bad potential written all over it…. it take some luck for sure but I dont think you can squint hard enough to find a 90+ win team in that Div as we currently stand… def dont think they should add much but standing pat the first half isnt the worst call

Exact reason why he’s underrated. I’m not saying he’s super flashy, but you put him on a team with a solid defense and he’s going to be a solid #3 or even better. If he averages as much fWAR as a guy like Greinke or Flaherty, then you know you have something good. Again, he’s great in every other metric aside from ERA. If you’re good in every stat expect for one are you a bad player?

You know what… I have a challenge. I want to know what kind of deal you’d want in return from the Rangers for Musgrove without including Jung, Huff, or Taveras. I’ll go into our prospect lists at the same time as you and try to put together a good deal to try and get him. I’d like to see where we differ on that.

I really don’t think the Rangers get Musgrove without at least one of Jung, Huff or Taveras. Musgrove could probably reel in at least 1 50 FV guy. Like from the Giants who seem to be really interested in SP, they would have to give up at least Heliot Ramos. I don’t think they will considering where they are, but just using them as an example as to what I think they need to get back. Lynn got back Dunning who consistently ranked as a top 80-90 prospect, and Lynn is older, has less years of control remaining and has far lower of a ceiling than Musgrove at this stage of their careers.

Then I’d say no to that if that was the case. Huff and Jung are part of the (very near) future and Taveras is already here. I would hate if we traded one of them. Looking to the infamous BTV site I tried to put together a trade not too extreme and came up with this:

Musgrove for Winn, Foscue, Crouse, Lora, and Apostel

And I would turn that down in a heartbeat. We have a ton of depth in our farm, but that would be a MASSIVE hit to our farm when in reality we could just sign Sugano and move on.

It makes sense that the Pirates would need to be “blown away’ in order to consider moving Taillon… given that he’s on an incredibly cheap deal and controllable for an additional season beyond this one — that alone makes him quite valuable to the rebuilding Pirates. But beyond that Taillon is a guy who has demonstrated the potential to be an ‘ace-caliber’ pitcher when healthy. And if he returns to full health and puts things together to post an ‘ace-like’ season (or half a season) he could wind up being a MUCH more valuable trade chip come the trade deadline/next off-season. Or given that he’s also still only 29 years old — he could wind up being a core piece to the Pirates rotation when the finally emerge from their rebuild and attempt to be competitive again in 2/3 years.

Then onto Taijuan Walker… I think he could wind up being one of the biggest steal signings of the off-season. For one thing he’s only 27/28 years old and is coming off an incredible second half of last season. When healthy he has shown the ability to not only be an effective starting pitcher but at times he has even shown the ability to be a frontline starter… possibly even capable of being a #2 (or better) starter on a playoff caliber team. Assuming he can stay healthy next season and he can continue pitching like he did after the trade to the Blue Jays last year… he could very well emerge as a sneaky “ace-caliber” starter while still making significantly less money than several other “more established” but in my opinion less talented starters.

People are getting way too excited about Taijuan Walker. Yes he had 5-6 good starts with Toronto but he has never once shown he can be anything more than a solid #4, possibly #3 starter over a full 162 game season. While there’s no denying he has talent, he’s not a workhorse and he’s not someone you can bank on for 200+ innings out of. He’s much more of a streaky pitcher. He’ll string together 4-5 good to great starts and then get pulled in the 3rd inning of his next start. While he’s a good addition to any team, it had better be as a #4 or #5 starter. Banking on anything more than that is a huge gamble.

Tommy La Stella is a really interesting player… he has essentially been effective in every situation he’s ever been put in but has (until recently) oddly never really been given much of a chance. As such he doesn’t necessarily have the track record of a lot of other guys… however I think that he’ll excel in any situation he’s put in and could definitely handle a starting role given how great he is at turning in ‘professional at-bats’ and getting on-base.

This may be a bit of an ‘out-there’ suggestion but I actually think that La Stella could be an ideal fit for the Red Sox who are in need of a second baseman — but also have a couple of internal options who could emerge as regulars deserving of playing time (Chavis, Munoz even Arroyo — not to mention Jeter Downs possibly at some point late next season) So given all of those variables… adding La Stella could be a perfect fit. He could start out the season as the everyday second baseman… and then if one or more of the other guys emerges as deserving of more playing time — La Stella could transition into a ‘super-utility’ role and still provide substantial value without completely blocking playing time for Jeter Downs like some of the more established second base free agent options would.

Note sure why owners of small markets like Pirates aren’t called out for putting a less than professional team on field. Then MLB allows them to sell/trade any player that would require significant compensation to a larger Market. The Pirates 3 and 4 hitters would bat 8 or 9th for Yanks or Dodgers. How’s that MLB competitive balance working?

It’s also because it is incredibly pervasive into the lives of those who are not doing anything wrong. It is allowing one specific group to completely control another group of people and all their actions, on the premise that it offends the former. That’s why it is not sustainable – it ends in servitude for one group.

BTW, what many conveniently fail to mention is that the Native Americans were wiping each other out as well. Does that justify what was done? No. How do I know?

Because on my paternal side exists an ancestral heritage of Native American lineage that goes back to the Eerie people (yes, that’s what they’re called) before they were killed and subsumed by rival tribes in the 1650s, specifically, Iroquois (Seneca Nation), among others. And, I’m still not at all offended. It’s funny how most people who are offended don’t even have a reason to be – it’s the faux offensive…..

So, if Cleveland changed their name to the Shawnee as in your example, and paid a tidy sum to use their namesake, I’m sure they would consider it an honor just like the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Jesus that took alot of scrolling to get down here to be able to comment!! lol

Anyways, Tommy La Stella is actually who I want the Braves to sign, if they cannot resign Ozuna, and/or if there is no universal DH..

By signing La Stella, and by using Contreras as their backup Catcher, it would afford the Braves and AA the luxury of saving some money, so they would still be able to go out and resign Greene, pickup another high leverage reliever/closer to replace Melancon, resign Duvall at a cheaper rate as a power bench bat/spot starter, and then they could also sign Joc Pederson…

    Acuña Jr.
    Albies/La Stella
    Freeman
    Pederson/Duvall
    d’Arnaud
    La Stella/Albies
    Swanson
    (DH Riley)
    Pache/Riley

I think that would be the perfect moves to put the Braves right back in contention for the division..They’d probably still end up losing to the Dodgers, but crazier things have happened!! They really only had 1 reliable starter and an upstart rookie last season, and they managed to get only 1 win away from advancing to the World Series..

Top that off with a new revamped rotation of three young super studs in Soroka, Fried, and Anderson, and then add in the veterans Morton and Smyly, and the Braves could matchup with almost anyone on any given night..

Even if Smyly doesn’t work out, the Braves still have Kyle Wright, Bryse Wilson, Newcomb, Ynoa, Davidson, Muller, or Touki they could all use to help fill in or piggyback off eachother. Heck. Wilson and Wright both looked pretty dang good at times last season, and looked the part of a couple bonafide #4&#5s moving forward..They just need to build off their success, and remain consistent going into 2021..

Or every 5th day, you could even have Smyly go the first 3 innings, bring in Newcomb/Wright/Wilson for the 4th and 5th innings, and then go with some combo of J.Webb/AJ Minter/T.Matzek/W.Smith/S.Greene to get through the 6th, 7th, and 8th, and then let Chris Martin close it out in the 9th…

Either way, the point is to get the message put to AA and Tommy La Stella for him to join Morton and please COME BACK HOME!!!

La Stella is a guy who I think could really surprise people next season and maybe even be an all-star. I mean over the last 2 seasons (which actually only add up to about a full season of ABs) he hit like .275 with an OBP of .350+ and 21 HRs. If he improves on that even slightly I wouldn’t be shocked to see him hit .285 with 25 HRs and an OBP of .370+ next year. I think, assuming he signs for a reasonable amount of $ this off-season, that he could be one of the biggest bargain/steals of the off-season. I view him kind of as DJ LaMahieu light… even more so comparable to when LaMahieu signed with the Yankees 2 years ago before really breaking out with the Yanks over the past 2 seasons. I think that La Stella has the potential to have a similar breakout (not quite as big as LaMahieu’s) but still… he could definitely turn into an All-star or close to it. He’s just a guy who’s flat out produced at every level, and in every situation he’s ever been put in. And if given the opportunity to really start over the course of a 162 game season — I think he could really surprise a lot of people.

Yeah, I’m kind of surprised that La Stella hasn’t gotten more of a opportunity in the Major Leagues so far. Teams seem to only use him as a utility guy, but he has definitely over-performed what you would expect from a utility guy.

To be fair, his worst season was also the year he got the most at-bats, so maybe he is the type of player who thrives as a utility guy but can’t quite make the jump to being an everyday starter.

Is JT Realmuto really going to get the big contract he’s expecting? It seems like the team’s that would be the most obvious fits (ie the Mets) have been more inclined to pursue other options… maybe that’s just the nature of the off-season BUT I also think it’s possible that he winds up not getting anywhere near the kind of $/length that he’s been seeking/expecting. Could be wrong though… he is obviously (and even moreso with McCann off the table) by far and large THE best catching option on the open market (and probably on the trade market as well) — so if a team is looking to really bolster their catching situation/and lineup… there aren’t many (if any) other options. (maybe Gary Sanchez if you think he’ll bounce back?)

I think McCann signing with the Mets will deal a large blow to Realmuto’s market. Only a few teams can actually afford a player like Realmuto, and some of those teams are unwilling to spend money right now.

I think he will eventually wind up with the Nationals, with the Astros being a potential sleeper as they haven’t gotten good production out of their catchers recently, and he could help make up for the loss of Springer.

Didn’t we see the same thing happen to grandal a few years back? He over played his hand, the Mets signed Ramos instead, his market fell apart and ended up signing a one year deal instead.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take a deal with a lot of deferred money, or sign a less than awesome contract with an opt out after this year

I hope/wish the Braves are in on La Stella for 3B. I’m not ready to give up on Riley but I’m also not ready to see him man the bag full time either. His -12.4 UZR and -8 DRS is impressively bad for a 60 game season. At the moment he kind of looks like Miguel Andujar without the runner up ROY finish.

La Stella can play 3b but it’s not ideal. He’s below average at 2nd base so probably worse at 3rd. He’d be best used as a platoon DH and part time infielder

I looked at his glove before I posted. At second base he pretty much slaughters hopes and dreams. At 3B, his defense won’t hurt you. He can also play a decent 1B but I doubt the Braves need another player to give Freddie Freeman his rather infrequent days off though with the occasional injury.

So many triggered flakes of snow…

300,000 dead. Active sedition. But, the real outrage is Cleveland’s MLB team’s moniker change.

??? Your comment is dumb. There is real outrage about the 300,000 dead and active sedition.

Idk, It seems to me the only people outraged is those who don’t agree with change. These “offended people” have been asking for this name change for over a decade now (peacefully). But, now it’s a big deal (or offensive) to the people that literally said the name itself wasn’t offensive in the fist place

Yes, because Cleveland was using a name that was making fun of themselves and you believe that indigenous people are all dumb.

        SMH

They can change their name but for the reason you suggest is pathetic.

I’m fine with Riley at 3rd full time. If at the trade deadline, that’s the only position we need to upgrade, then that’s the route I’d take. His glove is solid over there. He’s very streaky and fortunately/unfortunately it’s on the extremes on both good/bad. We he’s on, the guy looks like a superstar and can put an entire team on his back. When he’s bad though, lord it’s some kind of bad. You got to think eventually what he does well will click at his age and he will be able to maintain some sort of decent baseline with more experience. In my head, he’s got two years to figure it out, only way he does is by playing and our offense is (can be) good enough to carry him without much issue. Assuming AA finds a good replacement for Ozuna

@Yankee Clipper.. Let’s be honest, Dolan is a businessman first and a “philanthropist” following somewhere after. Maybe he’s trying to sell as much merch as possible, before the cutoff? Idk, I don’t mean to speculate.. But, not all Democrats believe in pro choice and all Republicans believe in pro life.. Life is colorful, nothing is as black and white as the lawyers will tell you. There is no true north, it’s only your perspective.
