Matt Dermody To Join Seibu Lions

By Jeff Todd | January 20, 2021 at 8:51pm CDT

Southpaw Matt Dermody will join Japan’s Seibu Lions for the 2021 season, MLBTR’s Steve Adams reports on Twitter. It’s a single-season pact, the financial particulars of which remain unknown.

Dermody had been slated to return to the Cubs after briefly appearing with the organization last season. The Chicago organization granted him his release to pursue what is in all likelihood a better earning opportunity in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.

It’s a good outcome for Dermody, a thirty-year-old hurler who has accrued only minimal MLB experience to this point (26 1/3 innings over three seasons). He was relegated to indy ball action in 2020 until the Cubs came calling with an offer.

Though he has some experience starting games in the low minors, Dermody has mostly functioned as a reliever as a professional. Over 87 1/3 total Triple-A innings, he carries a 4.12 ERA with 74 strikeouts and 23 walks.

Hmm, not familiar with him. What are his biggest hits? Or which album would you suggest I start out with?

What on God’s green earth are the Cubs doing? Not a peep from the Ricketts about their inexcusable tightwad ways. And nothing but pablum from Jed Hoyer, their little puppet. People who got their $600 stimulus check are spending more money than the Cubs this winter. Pathetic!

I believe they invested heavily in the ballpark and surroundings believing they would take it in. Then gave up a huge tv contract to start their own network. I agree with you about not paying anyone and basically trying to put a triple a team on the field. The rest of the rotation and outfield will probably be made up of their own minor leaguers and probably a few last minute free agent signings for minimum pay. I’m going to the dark side of town and forgetting my North side roots for 2021. Not the first time – I’m a baseball fan and have traveled down this road before. I’ve always rooted for both Chicago teams. I don’t buy into the Chicago crap about being a fan of one or the other team anyways. I think this is why Theo quit.

Ricketts is a huge RepubIican supporter, especially Trumpy Bear. Now that Trumpy Bear is gone for good, all other RepubIicans are finding their support at record lows too, so I think Ricketts will have to lay low for a couple of years until people get over 45.

The obligatory and disrespectful “who?” comment from some loser trolling the site. The kid played at the MLB level and is now going to Japan for a payday in a great league. Anyone who can do that deserves respect rather than some lowlife asking “who?”.
