Injury Notes: Contreras, Springer, Dozier

By Mark Polishuk | May 24, 2021 at 11:59am CDT

The Cubs’ 2-1 victory over the Cardinals last night came with some pain for Willson Contreras, as the backstop was hit in the wrist while trying to catch a pitch from Craig Kimbrel in the 10th inning.  Contreras remained in the game after being checked out by trainers, though Cubs manager David Ross told reporters (including MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian) that he initially was worried that Contreras had broken his wrist.

While it seems like the worst has been avoided, Contreras could quite possibly sit out Chicago’s next game (on Tuesday against the Pirates) for precautionary reasons, and an injured-list trip probably shouldn’t be ruled out given the vagaries of wrist injuries.  This would create a vacuum behind the plate for the Cubs, as normal backup Austin Romine is on the 60-day IL due to a sprained wrist.  Rookie P.J. Higgins is current acting as Contreras’ backup, and veterans Tony Wolters and Jose Lobaton are at Triple-A but not on the 40-man roster — Wolters was only just outrighted off the 40-man on Saturday.

More on other injury situations from around baseball..

  • There isn’t much new on George Springer’s status, as Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters (including Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith) that Springer is “improving” but there isn’t yet any sense of when the outfielder might begin a rehab assignment or be ready to rejoin the lineup.  Springer is, however, accompanying the Jays on their upcoming road trip.  Due to an oblique strain and a pair of quad strains, Springer has played in only four games for Toronto this season.
  • The Royals moved Hunter Dozier from the seven-day concussion IL to the regular 10-day IL, which could be a hint that he is nearing a return to the lineup.  Dozier went to the seven-day IL on May 14 after a collision with Jose Abreu on the basepaths, so he has already been absent for the minimum 10 days and could be activated as early as tomorrow, when the Royals begin a series against the Rays.  Dozier has already played in two Triple-A rehab games.  Over 124 plate appearances this season, Dozier has yet to get going, as he has hit only .139/.202/.339 with five homers.

George Springer seems very unlucky with the injuries.

He got his money. If they make the playoffs he will be healthy.

George springer has a terrible contract, hope he can get healthy but as of now this is a bad bad move by Toronto.

It’s way too early to go quite that far. The injuries are definitely concerning, but let’s watch the guy actually play for a month or two before we go writing him off completely. He’s given no reason to believe that when fully healthy, he can’t still be the same player he has been. The Jays definitely overpaid for him, but they had to if they really wanted to land him. His contract will probably be rough for the last couple seasons of it, but he could easily still justify the contract with a few more vintage Springer seasons. It’s still very possible… he just needs to get healthy.

This is the worst quad pull/strain I’ve ever heard of. It started with the oblique, and he strained his quad in mid-April, right? He clearly wasn’t ready when he came back early May, as they had him DH… and here we are 3 weeks later with no timetable. Are they sure it’s not a more significant tear? I mean goodness, it sounds like it could be another couple weeks, and that’d be 5-6 weeks since his most recent stint of re-aggravating it. Either the dude heals slow as hell or it’s more of a significant tear than they are telling us.

only the cubs would have a catcher injured trying to catch a ball.

Roberto Perez has been out for weeks because he broke a finger while catching a ball so try again.

Didn’t the almighty Yadier Molina hurt his balls trying to catch a ball?

You’d expect a troll to at least be smarter…

Yadi’s attempt was thwarted due to a foul ball. Not sure about Perez but Contreras simply over reached and the ball caught his wrist. Not sure if he was expecting a different pitch or not.

It was a cross up, Contreras was apparently expecting a breaking ball and Kimbrel threw a fastball instead, it happens, just as it happens when the catcher gets drilled by a foul tip.

Good GOD not sure if he got crossed up ??? Understand the game of baseball before posting . Yes all star World Series champion catcher who calls the pitch would just whiff on a 95 mph heater . Just stop

The Cubs are 2 games back in the central, why would they trade their best hitter for a 27 year old catcher who isn’t good?

……and that comes from a guy whose name (ChiSox) must support a team whose highest paid player in team history is hitting .141 and truly can’t catch and is brutal behind the plate. Feel free to attempt trolling back as I and others won’t have to endure you any longer as soon as I hit this mute button. And how about you beat the Cardinals this week…….

I haven’t used the mute button except for one relentless political ranter. I think it’s important to hear all sides. But man, this poor guy has the worst south side Cub envy of any Sox fan I’ve ever known and I’ve been tempted to just cut him off… As a Cub fan, I’ve had Cardinal and White Sox
friends forever who gave it up for the Cubs in ‘16 because of what it meant for the city, to baseball and to long suffering Cub fans… I haven’t muted this guy because after relentlessly trolling Cub posts on here forever, I wanna see if he has an ounce of class if the Sox go all the way. And by the way, I would be happy for them if they did. It would be great for the city, baseball and for Sox fans. I really hope he doesn’t turn out to be a gloating troll. But I’m not holding my breath.

Miguel Amaya is in Double A Tennessee. People either forgot about him, didn’t educate themselves about the kid so they can continue “the Cub farm is bare bullcrap’ but This kid is the future starting catcher- got an arm and has power.

Don’t get your hopes up on Amaya yet… He looks more like a future backup at the moment, he’s never really hit well in the minors… He is ranked this high cause of his defense, upside and plate discipline, but you’ve got to hit the ball too if you’re gonna be an everyday player.

Cubs really miss Víctor Caratini. He’s one reason the Cubs should have received more from the Padres. Versatile player. Good catcher, can play 1st and some corner outfield. He is Yu’s personal catcher so Victor had to be part of that deal.

Absolutely correct. We will likely know the real results of the Cubs return in 4-5 years or so. Still, my point is the Cubs should have received at least one higher ranked player from the Padres system.

No offense but I think KC is playing the I.L. manipulation game with Doz based on Kelvin Gutierrez’s hot start & rightfully so. And if Soler keeps being nonproductive and at the same time if Dozier starts tearing it up at Omaha, I say DFA Jorge Soler because he isn’t going to resign (otherwise he already would have based on the various talks over the last 2 years) and they won’t get anything short of another DFA’d player in a trade so it’s time to move on from JS…

No they aren’t. In fact he was in an Omaha game for his rehab and he got a couple of hits. I’m sure he will be playing in a couple more games Omaha will be home this week so he will probably play in Omaha while the Royals are in Tampa & Minnesota. Plus they will have to make two transaction changes because Mondesi will be coming back off the IL soon as well. They could send Ryan O’Hearn down but That only takes care of one spot.
