Michael Conforto, Jeff McNeil Leave Mets’ Game With Injuries

By Anthony Franco | May 16, 2021 at 11:31pm CDT

8:15PM: Conforto and McNeil will both receive MRIs, manager Luis Rojas told Deesha Thosar of The New York Daily News and other reporters.  According to Thosar, Rojas’ comments seemed to imply that Conforto’s injury could be of greater concern than McNeil’s problem.  McNeil said his injury was a “carry over” from the cramping issues that recently sidelined him for a couple of games.

12:58PM: Mets outfielder Michael Conforto left this afternoon’s game against the Rays in the top of the first inning after pulling up lame while running to first base, Tim Healey of Newsday was among those to note (Twitter link). Conforto is dealing with right hamstring tightness, the Mets announced (via Mike Puma of the New York Post). Jake Hager replaced him in right field. Additionally, second baseman Jeff McNeil departed in the second inning with left hamstring tightness. McNeil, who was serving as the designated hitter in today’s interleague contest, was replaced at the position by catcher Patrick Mazeika.

It’s too early to know if either player is in danger of missing extended time. If Conforto winds up having to sit out, it’d be an especially difficult blow to a Mets outfield that’s already without Brandon Nimmo and depth option Albert Almora Jr. Nimmo, who has been out since May 3 with a left index finger contusion, was sent for further treatment due to continued pain, manager Luis Rojas told reporters (including Healey and Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News) this morning.

Hager has almost exclusively worked as an infielder in the minors, making him a more natural potential replacement for McNeil. Utilityman José Peraza has spent some more time on the grass, but he’s also more of an infielder by trade. If Conforto winds up missing time, the Mets could turn to prospect Khalil Lee, who was recently optioned to Triple-A Syracuse after receiving his first big league call earlier in the week. If McNeil has to miss some games, non-roster veteran Brandon Drury could be an option, although he’s off to a poor start in Syracuse and would need to be added to the 40-man roster.

Conforto is hitting .232/.358/.339 over his first 134 plate appearances this season. That marks a downturn in production for the impending free agent, who slashed a robust .274/.376/.499 between 2019-20. McNeil is also having a bit of a down year relative to his past level of production, hitting .242/.336/.374 in 113 trips to the plate.

Find me a team that has lost value like two 2’s, their best RP, and 4 800ops bats…… all in the middle of the lineup. And the best pitcher in world who their ace has also missed 3 starts.

The Phillies and Braves had both had significant injuries to star players this season. Injuries all over the place. It’s not isolated to the Mets, bud.

They haven’t had key players put the whole year like the Mets. (Carrasco and syndergaard)

Nimmo and Davis have also missed more than any Phillies player.

Braves have more minor injuries other than Soroka.

The Mets have got hit the hardest. Stop denying it.

Acuna Jr. is arguably the best player in baseball. That’s not a significant injury?

Sometimes your posts are off the wall ridiculous. The Mets have to be the best at everything, even getting hurt.

@Cosmo In my opinion as well, but you can compare them without sounding ridiculous. Either way, Trout is irrelevant here. MetsFan is labeling the Braves injuries as minor. Travis d’Arnaud and Acuna Jr. are both huge injuries. Two of many the Braves have had. Phillies played the Mets without Realmuto, Harper, Gregorious, and Segura. 3 of those 4 are hurt yet again. Mets injuries are big too. I don’t deny that. I’m not trying to compare injuries here. In fact, my original post was about how the NL East players are dropping like flies. But according to MetsFan22, somehow the Mets injuries matter more.

Today’s at-bat in the 8th is a perfect example why Acuna is not a superstar. Call him what you want, a superstar delivers in these spots when you need him to.

Again, his solo, first pitch 1st inning home runs are cute, but he is far from a superstar.

again, a superstar delivers – does not matter if it’s a home run or not. He is a very good player, but not a superstar. Ironically, when Acuna is up, I have little confidence he will produce because he strikes out a lot. Although I’ll give him credit where it is due – he toned it down this year so far. But my point still stands going back to his rookie year, when you make contact, you will produce. So far this year, we see the benefits of it.

Some fans resent guys who play with a flair. I think it’s great for the MLB and will attract a new generation of fans. The death of baseball, as usual, is exaggerated. In my opinion, the sport is headed for a boom period in terms of international appeal. What they need to do is take a few pages out of the NBA in terms of marketing.

@brodie-bruce, The season is a marathon. No panic. As a fan, I look for silver linings, When guys get hurt, others can step up which is good for the long-range prognosis of the team. In 2018, they started out 16-26 with Seager, Turner, and four-fifths of the rotation injured at the same time. That’s how Muncy entered the lineup and Buehler cracked the rotation. As a result, they held the fort, acquired Machado at the deadline, and went back to the World Series. No panic then, none needed now. The window for contending is far beyond this year. You can already see with Lux’s defense at SS, Uceta impressing on the mound, and the next wave of minor leaguers like Busch, Hoese, Miller, and Beeter getting closer. Best era to be a Dodger fan. They just have to hang in there while waiting for guys to get healthy. Even if that doesn’t happen, they will likely remain a contender in the future. It’s not just about 2021.

@cey very true and i was speaking in hypothetical terms as in worst case scenario (by no means i want that to happen) i just hope the fo doesn’t panic and got caught up in winning a ws that they make rash moves. tbh i’d rather the “injury bug” hit my team early in the season when i can make up games and teams are just starting to warm up than late in the season when i need them the most.

@brodie-bruce, It can be a blessing in disguise in some situations because it gives other players a chance to play, which can build depth. The trick is still making the post-season, which I am banking on with the Dodgers. Get to the tradeline in the mix, reassess your needs and health issues, and take it from there.

I still like the Braves in the East. Pitching is a concern, though. They have the prospects to trade for some; just wondering if they can afford to wait until July. So long as no one runs away with the division, I suppose they’re okay.

Ian, do you get enjoyment out of anything? Following what you consider losers, and hope and explain how they are daily horrible. That’s kinda low hanging fruit. Already based on your preconceived notions. So not much will ever change. Its self fulfilling. You will always be right in your reality but you will get no happiness or satisfaction. Unless your pure enjoyment is being right.

Why does MLB need to copy the NBA? Why can’t MLB just be itself? There’s this huge contradiction amongst fans: on the one hand, owners are greedy jerks making money hand over fist… on the other: the game is struggling and can’t sustain its financial future without major changes. … it’s funny, I only ever hear this myth of baseball having no future brought up when someone is trying to justify some mammoth change to the rules or schedule or try to make the game all about bat flips and hair dye. It’s all such nonsense.

What does 500 homers have anything to do with what I said? I’m not talking against all stats, just asserting the universally accepted idea that pitcher wins are an unreliable stat.

Tom… of course you can scour the annals of history to find rotations where Stroman would be the number 5, but as of today he is a #3. Not every team can have the luxury of having multiple pitchers with a shot at the Hall of Fame, it’s just not realistic. If you don’t like the guy for whatever reason that’s fine, but you can’t deny the fact that the team has better chances of winning than losing when he is on the mound.

So is deGrom a bad pitcher because he “can’t win”?

500 home runs… blah… what is his spinny rate? That’s what makes a great hitter.

Better chance of winning? Wins dont matter, remember? It’s the spinny rate that matters.

Don’t judge a pitcher on win loss record. That’s what I’m saying. You are all over the place… Stroman, homers, 3 is a 500 (?), listing names. Its impossible to follow your logic. My question is: deGrom didn’t collect wins, is he therefore a bad pitcher? Just trying to figure out your logic, or if there is any or if you’re just misunderstanding me.

Stroman is great. He took the offer because he opted out last year and wanted a full season of playing before hitting the market. That and revenues will be up from last year and teams will have more to spend next year.

Walker seems to be the only dependable pitcher maybe Peterson.
    Degrom is too fragile

Cohen HAS to get two 280 plus hitter who consistantly drive in runs.
    No hitting.
341 million for a a 180 hitter one third through season. 10 years of this.

bryant isn’t the answer last few seasons he has been slightly above average and lindor will come around tbh i think lindor is just pressing to much trying to show why he is worth the contract. imo lindor needs to take a few days off catch his breath and chill out and just go out and play his game and relax but that’s easier said than done

It’s a long season. As fans, we need to be patient. Baseball is not a sport where you can live and die with every pitch. Met’s in-game threads on Metsmerized are plain dumb. A nonstop string of negativity by people who think players should be successful 100% of the time. It doesn’t work that way. Yet these fans spend the entire game complaining. It’s as if they want the Mets to fail, with many of them claiming they hate this player and that player. I will never understand the mentality behind booing or ragging on a struggling player. If a player is struggling, you should be rooting for him extra hard. Yet there is already an anti-Lindor faction of Mets fans, which makes zero sense. These people must have miserable lives.

I’ve watched the Cardinals a bit. Tough times for Carpenter. Ha. About 10 days ago I was thinking the league had finally figured out Max Muncy, but now he is on a major tear. It’s obvious why baseball was invented: to torment us. Imagine what the players themselves must go through when slumping? Traveling from city to city filled with self-doubt, only to be booed by your own fans when you return home. Slumps happen to every player and are never easy. You can bet these guys sometimes wonder if maybe they’re nearing the end of the trail.

Btw, have you noticed how the “Arenado can’t hit outside Coors” comments have disappeared? Such a great player.

@cey me and my dad often talk about we feel horrible for matt, especially when the guy works so hard and is a team guy. i really hope matt kind find some of that magic i really don’t wanna see him get dfa’ed. our biggest selling point to fa we have is how we treat aging players without that we’re not getting many fa’s. don’t get me wrong i love stl and to me it’s the best city, but i’m delusional that cities like la , ny, chi, and (insert any major city near a coast) i’ve been to a lot of them cities and if i was 20ish millionaire i would love to live in any of them cities

Getting back Nimmo and Davis as soon as ready offsets the loss of McNeil and Conforto which keeps Pillar and Villar in the lineup as every days guys with Conforto and McNeil on the shelf.

Hopefully, Nimmo and Davis are no more than a week away from return, By then Degrom returns and Lugo hopefully by end of May.

But right now, the loss of McNeil, Conforto, Davis and Nimmo, plus Guillorme ,Almora, Carassco, Syndergaard, Lugo and Degrom is a lot to bear.. Mets have to find a way to prevail while they still hold first place, just barely.
