MLB To Require Vaccinations For Players To Participate In Arizona Fall League

By Anthony Franco | September 20, 2021 at 7:44pm CDT

Major League Baseball is requiring players to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to participate in the Arizona Fall League, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. It marks the first instance of an MLB vaccination mandate directly affecting players.

Last week, Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reported that MLB was mandating vaccinations among non-playing team personnel in order for those individuals to be granted access to the field during postseason play. That requirement did not apply to players, as any sort of vaccine mandate for MLB players would need to be agreed upon with the Players Association. MLB can and has attempted to encourage vaccinations among big leaguers by loosening health and safety protocols for teams that fully vaccinate 85% of Tier 1 personnel.

The Arizona Fall League is an annual prospect showcase that takes place after the conclusion of the standard minor league season. It is operated by MLB. Teams send a contingent of players at various minor league levels to the AFL in order to log extra playing time. The caliber of player assigned to the league is also highly variable, but it’s not uncommon to see at least a few of the league’s most promising prospects participate.

It’s possible a few players on MLB 40-man rosters will be tabbed for Fall League action. Those players are members of the MLBPA, but Piecoro notes that the Fall League is generally treated as a minor league, making a MLB vaccination mandate for players permissible. That naturally raises the question whether MLB could consider a vaccination mandate for all affiliated minor leagues next season even if the MLBPA doesn’t agree to a mandate at the big league level. There’s no indication that’s presently the league’s intent, but one executive opined to Piecoro the AFL vaccine mandate might wind up being a precursor to similar measures for minor leaguers during next year’s Spring Training.

@giantsphan12 What do you call it when it’s a shot that doesn’t keep you from getting and/or transmitting COVID, only lessens the symptoms per the claims. Why doesn’t everyone need to be tested? I’ve known more people that have gotten “vaccinated” and came down with COVID than those that have not gotten the shot. But even if you’re of the belief that this is a vaccine and it keeps you from getting COVID, then what do you care if someone else gets the “vaccine”? You’re protected right???

@Ted…although the death toll IS high, the numbers have been inflated. I work for a hospital as a respiratory therapist, we ARE getting our butts kicked from the unvaccinated and some vaccinated also, but facts are facts. We had a terminal patient that came in, passed away. His family is suing the hospital for his death certificate stating covid when it was cancer. Florida had 15k patients die from other illnesses that were labeled covid deaths and they had to fix that count as recently as a month ago.

@Dodger1958..I misspoke about it being a lawsuit, but in fact was a correction CDC had to make for over counting number of cases. They did correct it. Here’s the deal…hospitals get paid $13k for a covid patient and $30k if patients go on vents. When it comes to cause of death, they have to only assume that covid played a roll not necessarily be the number 1 factor to label the death as covid to get that money, which equals BS! Terminal patients that were on death bed who contact covid while hospitalized get labeled as covid death.

@dodger1958…also I don’t believe for one second Florida or any state is undercounting anything. It’s the hospital and Dr/physicians that have to report time of death and reason. It has to corroborate with coroner then gets filed with CDC.

Not any scientific advice from the cdc. I chose this article cause it’s actually pretty funny if you read it.

Wanna try again RaysAllDay? Helps if you read the article.

They explicitly mention your cat and dog are animal reservoir for coronaviruses.

You gonna start vaccinating your pets so they can’t spread the virus to you? Wouldn’t put it past you to do so.

“Companion animals, specifically dogs and cats, are among the most commonly infected groups of animals in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Natural cases of suspected human-to-animal transmission have been confirmed in dogs and cats from several countries, and the earliest reports date back to March 2020 in Hong Kong (32). As of January 2021, there are ≈100 confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infections in dogs and cats in the United States; most of those cases resulted from exposure to owners who had COVID-19”

So why aren’t you vaccinating your animals against covid19 RaysAllDay?

          1. I never said I trusted the cdc in my post where I linked the article.

          2. I linked the article to see if ppl would actually read it. You didn’t read it clearly. If you did you’d probably laugh at the CDC saying “hey your dog and cat can infect you with covid 19!” No seriously that’s the entire point theyre making from April 2021. Your dog and cat can catch and spread covid serving as animal reservoirs. That’s it. That’s the message put out there by the CDC. Your dog and cat are the biggest animal threats to you if you’re vaccinated as vaccinated people can catch and spread covid.

          3. I wouldn’t put it past pharmaceutical companies and government agencies being paid to tell people vaccinate your pets against covid 19 next. And people in this thread would. That’s the sad part.

Those are the supposedly reported numbers. It’s not from polls. Those are the numbers being sent in from people taking the vax. Hence the 59% have had at least 1 shot. Like always numbers are off when you have a mass quantity of reporting.

Defining people by race in any situation is dicey. Because it totally relates to how one defines themselves. Is Obama black or white? His mom was white and his black? Is Penelope Cruz (Spanish) white or Hispanic?

In any event, poll after poll after poll has found a huge disparity between whether Democrats or Republicans remain unvaccinated. The number of unvaccinated are disproportionately Republican.

          Right.

And actual numbers being reported to health agencies and being tracked say

~60% of people who’ve had at least 1 shot we know the race and that number is primarily white people.

You can poll as many people as you like. Polls aren’t hard data. They’re guesses based on how people respond, assuming they answered truthfully and didn’t take a poll more than once. Cause everyone knows nobody lies on polls.

I came back to check how my troll comments were doing but unironically I agree with you. In a free society, all you need is to say “no.” If you can’t do that, then you’re not free. One half likes their choices being stripped–part of why they have disdain for capitalism: there’s too many options–but the others will defend their freedoms to the death.

A peaceful divorce that breaks the union into states or regions like the EU and returns federal control to the Articles of Confederation days is preferable, with the feds providing common defense and protecting freedoms when state/regional rights are violated.

As a wise man once said, “I don’t want to change your mind, but I don’t want to share a country with you either.”

Yeah, that’s going to be super successful fighting existential threats like climate change. Let’s decentralize and return power to a federation of small states. That’ll solve big problems for sure. *eyeroll*

We don’t hate capitalism. We just see problems with it and recognize that individuals make bad choices when they are acting in their own self interest. The invisible hand of the market isn’t always right. Sometimes scientists, doctors, engineers, and researchers know better than you do. It’s not 1770 anymore.

“How come the cold and flu vaccine aren’t required every year and how come you don’t get vaccinated every year from the ones required by school?”

This has been answered time and time again since over a year ago. Covid is a novel coronavirus, and science is ongoing, so knowledge evolves as we learn more.

Since it’s novel, a vaccine was not in production. Vaccines have since been produced and approved by the FDA. Since it’s novel and there are many unknown regarding it, including multiple mutations, and it is more serious that a typical cold or flu, vaccines are being mandated because we don’t currently have a virtually foolproof way of mitigating the effects of infection. Perhaps once it’s in check, vaccines might not be a requirement, just like the flu vaccine is not.

Let’s not pretend this is something that has been around and understood for decades. Science is learning as it goes.

And you’re supposedly a medical professional. Do you also suggest horse dewormer to patients? How about Hydroxychloroquine?

If you get the shot your employer, vaccine companies, and federal/state government aren’t liable if you have complications.

The CDC found 175 cases of complications for 1.1 million shots given. Only 21 of them were discovered to be negative reactions due to the first dose of the vaccine. Of those cases almost all had had previous history of allergic reactions from similar medications. For the record that is a 0.0019% chance of something going wrong.

You can look it up to verify if you don’t believe me. You can claim conspiracy and cover up if you don’t believe the CDC. This is the internet, heavens know I can’t stop someone from choosing what to believe.

I just don’t get the argument of liability when stacked against public health and actually for that matter personal health.

And the stats Sabermetric Acolyte was quoting were old as there have been over 386 million shots given in the US. But percentage-wise, probably close to the same.

As I’ve stated before. Hospitals aren’t reporting all instances of people developing complications.

Just like recent reports came out saying we’ve had possibly double the number of covid cases than have been reported you’ll start seeing more reports come out saying hospitals haven’t been reporting all complications.

You already are seeing reports coming out about under reporting.

Idk about you but I’m not fond of government agencies constantly lying and people not being transparent. Guaranteed way to build distrust.

I would love more accurate data, it would make more people trust in the science.

Vaccine side effects are not new, even with vaccines that are “required” for public health. In the past, “about 1,000 people for every 1 million people vaccinated with the smallpox vaccine for the first time experienced reactions that, while not life-threatening, were serious.”

The sad thing about Covid is that it could of, and should of, been contained early on. But this is the age of social media, divisive politics, and a serious mistrust overall.

What is new is nobody is liable if you develop complications.

Even if you’re assuming the .002% is accurate, its not cause underreported happens, that’s 7,000 people who have no means to seek damages.

Even at 1,000 per 1 mill people thatd be 330,000 people who’d have no means to seek damages for something they were forced into taking either through government mandate if military or job requirement.

Nobody is liable. That’s a huge red flag.

          “Right. So we’ve gone from

You were wrong about them being vaccinated.

You were wrong about them not entering the country undetected evading border patrol”

Reread my comments, multiples. You clearly are misunderstanding.

The other poster, whom I muted, said (paraphrasing) that illegal immigrants were being released into the US unvaccinated.

The WaPo source that you provided did not state that at all. That’s all I was saying.

“And you think you won’t be wrong about them being released and sent to other parts of the country?

Report came out July 2021 50,000 illegals were set free. This was before Biden in August 2021 said he’d ramp up vaccinations for illegals with few being vaccinated. No court date. And they’ve only heard from 13%

So this is concerning. What’s more concerning to me, though, is that I located the original article on Axios (via your Yahoo source, thanks for that), which did not mention whether or not the migrants were even tested, much less vaccinated. That’s criticL information which is omitted, leaving us to fill in the blanks (which we will generally do with our biases). The Axios piece should have been more complete for sure.

Story #1 – 50,000 illegals set free – axios, yahoo. Whoever wrote it July 2021 and prior. Illegals were set free.

Story #2 – Officials admit per wapo vast majority of illegals have gone unvaccinated with few being held in long term facilities being vaccinated. Biden plans to increase vaccinations after 50,000 were set free February 21, March 21, April 21, May 21, June 21. Whenever they were set free.

Right. All 50,000 were vaccinated and set free. Sure man. The overwhelmed border patrol agents that set people free without court dates cause they are overwhelmed and over crowded made sure those who were released got both vaccines before releasing them uh huh. Sure.

There was no information regarding vaccines OR TESTING in the source you provided. Test results obviously don’t take long, and could have been feasible though I agree that vaccines likely weren’t administered. I find it difficult to understand why border patrol would simply release unknowns into the US because they were overwhelmed, when they could have been released in the other direction.

          From the article:

“Vaccine would be provided to those facing deportation as well as migrants likely to be released into the United States pending a court hearing, said one of the two officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the tentative plan. Migrants who are quickly sent back to Mexico under the Title 42 public health law would not be offered a dose, at least during the initial phase, the person said.”

The article also does not say that those not given a vaccine were released into the US, only that some were given to those in detention facilities.

You derive what you want out of it, which is a lot of presumption. Just like the majority of your posts. A lot of conjecture, not much evidence. So believe what you want instead of simply accepting the facts on their face, if it supports your bias.

It will likely apply only to players who are not protected by the union. All players on 40-man rosters have union protection so there will still be unvaccinated players playing in the minors. However, my guess is the total number of unvaccinated players playing in the minors ok 40-man rosters will be VERY low. I don’t know for sure but I think somewhere in the neighborhood of 80% of MLB players have chosen to be vaccinated.

I’m surprised and a bit disappointed the comment section was left open for this article. This discourse has seeped its way into every corner of my mediasphere now. Might be time to stick to books.

It’s the recipe now for this site. Post a Covid article. Watch the comment section turn into an absolute disaster. Then remove the comments that don’t conform to the writers beliefs. I’m not making this up either. I’ve had comments removed that in no way were disrespectful, or hateful, or FALSE, but they don’t line up to their propaganda. Shameful behavior frankly. America and American rights are crumbling, and people like these writers are playing their part in censorship, and the dumbing down of society. Just follow orders and shut up. Germany did the same thing in the late 30s and 40s. They had this crazy leader guy. I forget his name.

I just want to make sure I understand you here.

“You may be ok being a human guinea pig with 0 long term data. Rest of aren’t.” Then, you add, “You’re also ignoring studies saying people who have covid have longer and stronger immunity than the Vax provides.”

So according to you, the vaccine has 0 long term data, but the studies of the immune systems of those who acquired Covid does? What constitutes long term data to you?

I support the vaccine but forcing it upon someone to play baseball. Who are we now? Yes yes blah blah.. facts this and facts that. My thoughts are what if the player already has tested positive? He still needs to be vaccinated? We are all frogs in a slow pot of boiling water. If it was boiling when we got in, we would just jump out. Get in line

I was told as a child I had to wear pants to play in the playground. It wasn’t fun because I played hard and shorts was the way to go.

Wayhayzee says shut up and get the damn shot. Ok comrade, again NOT against vaccines but there is something that was created called HIPPA. I don’t want to walk in room and have some guy like you have the right to ask me for my vaccine card. I never said I’m not vaccinated either right? Look at the premeditated hate.

Before we get political. New Vaccine technology (minus J&J). Was approved for emergency use and FDA has only approved one so far. Different vaccines being used by different countries. Brazil has their own I believe. Like anything you put into the human body, every human takes on the chances of allergic reactions and health complications. Or take it and receive %70 protection from an avoidable slow suffocating death with compromised health.

Again I’m not a YouTube doctor, but my initial comment was over looked. What if someone has had Corona virus? Would they not have more immunity than someone with the vaccine. I thought you can trace back the antibodies? Do they get a card for that?

Dodgers1958fan says it’s the cousin of the flu and is mutating. Sir we use facts and science every year on what mutation flu strain will be out. Yet it’s still an educated guess and doesn’t mean you won’t get the “flu”. Don’t stand outside your Beverly hills pharmacy with your signs.

I kid, I kid, go Dodgers!

Oh before I’m contacted by a lawyer. Pretty sure HIPPA doesn’t protect you from vaccine privacy. Like so your employer, like MLB, can require it or you gone! Oh and Guillian Bare isn’t fun so at least we’re not at risk of that, we’ll unless you went the J&J route like were long in the tooth eh?

Ron my friend it is HIPAA (by the way) which has nothing to do with vaccine mandates. Asking for your card has nothing to do with HIPAA.

As to your comment about antibodies following a COVID infection, the science seems to indicate no.

          Zing. Got me boys

Seems no one is really sure. Even the CDC.

Some antibodies made for the virus that causes COVID-19 provide protection from getting infected. CDC is evaluating antibody protection and how long protection from antibodies might last. Cases of reinfection and infection after vaccination have been reported, but remain rare. But getting vaccinated, even if you have already had COVID-19, can help your body make more of these antibodies.

I’d be legitimately curious to hear an answer to this question from the “it’s my body and the government can’t tell me what to do with it” people…

    Why is heroin illegal?

Because it can kill you? Because people on heroin can be dangerous to other people in public? Because Bill Gates wants to control you? Why?

Why can the government take away this “freedom”?

Agreed. What many people refuse to acknowledge in the name of “freedumb” is this an extremely dangerous pandemic. 675,000 dead to date (and the body count continues to climb), hundreds of thousands with known, on-going serious medical complications (many of which will likely be permanent), and G-d only knows how many will suffer serious health issues in the future.

The coronavirus is a “cousin’ to the flu and cold. Unlike serious viruses such as measles, mumps, rubella, smallpox, polio, the COVID 19 virus continues to mutate. This makes both treatment and eradication complex and challenging. This doesn’t mean that the vaccines are experimental (in fact the Pfizer vaccine has been fully vetted and approved, Modena to follow shortly), it means that it is a continuing battle which science must be able to deal with. The fear by many experts is that as the virus mutates an even more deadly variant will arise. One which the current vaccines are not effective, and/or one which will cling to surfaces and last hours or days and cannot effectively be cleaned with disinfectants.

The longer people refuse to vaccinate the longer the current variants will continue to mutate.

There is little to no verifiable scientific evidence that the vaccine is dangerous. In fact, the evidence is to the contrary. Anti vaxxers have existed long before the onset of COVID 19. There is no constitutional [at least in the US Constitution] right to refuse a vaccine. This has been well established for well over a century.

It doesn’t matter what info I produce for you. It doesn’t really matter to you about my background. If you cannot see what politicians have done to this country, especially in the recent past, you’ll never understand how I come to my conclusions. Yes, I am very conservative and a Christain. I’m sure many of you would hate me based on my beliefs. But that’s beside the point. I refuse to take any advice from politicians and media, especially when they start trying to force it down my throat. Yes, I have very little respect for liberals, because everything they touch turns to crap. But mostly it’s discernment. So whether I have a PHD or I work at the local diner, I can figure things out for myself. And I try to point out liberal hypocrisy every chance I get.

Contrary to what you say you were not born with an innate understanding of the COVID 19 or the vaccines. Your understanding, if any, of the disease and the vaccine is based upon what you have been told, seen or read. So you don’t think for yourself. Contrary to what you claim, your view is bead upon
by what your religious leaders tell to believe, what your “very conservative” sources of information tell you believe and what your favoured politicians spew out. You in fact parrot what right media and politicians say almost in a formalistic manner. But you clearly don’t even see that.

So your knowledge, skill, training, formal education, and experience greatly influence how your are able (or unable) to filter out the messages you receive and actual formulate a factually based decision on whether to take the vaccine or not. Nothing you have posted remotely suggests a factual understanding of the science of the disease or the vaccine. Nor the background to even be able to do so.

The only hypocrisy I see here is that of a very conservative Christian.,

Right. The big pharmaceutical, big corporations, federal government lap dogs are the truth seekers lmao.

Believe it or not. People are allowed to ask questions. There are good questions not being answered.

        Here’s a few
        1. Why aren’t vaccinated people being tested as regularly/often or mandated to be tested when they can catch and spread covid? If we are worried about cases why isnt testing weekly mandatory for the vaccinated to quarantine?

        2. Why do kids need the vaccine? More kids died in 2018 and 2019 0-17 from the flu than they have from covid in 21 going on 22 months, almost double the amount of time.

        3. Why were George Floyd riots allowed in 2020 during a pandemic?

        4. Why do these covid mandates and rules never apply to politicians? The mayor of SF can go out maskless cause she was feeling the spirit but you need to follow her guidelines or else.

        5. Why aren’t drug companies the government your boss liable for vaccine complications? Companies are liable if they produce bad batches like the ones Japan got…..except these companies are under EAU until 2023 when the trials end and not liable currently. They’ll become liable once they lose EAU. To my knowledge 0 people have been able to use VICP for covid vaccines

          1. For the most part those vaccinated comply with distancing, masking and social gathering. Those who remain unvaccinated at this point have made, in most instances, a conscious decision, not to do so.

          2. Kids can still die, albeit it is rare. What the long term effects on children are unknown. Unvaccinated children can still get sick and spread the disease.

          3. For the same reason that Trump inspired insurrection of 1-6 happened.

          4. COVID mandates do apply to everyone. Millions of people flaunt them politicians and no politicians alike. Like 45 who had to do a victory lap in an auto exposing several secret service members.

          5. Because the government has decided to create preemptive laws shielding all forms of manufacturers from liability for their products like drug companies, auto and aircraft manufacturers and the list goes on.

          1. No they’re not. Vaccinated people were literally told by Biden you don’t have to wear a mask if you’re vaccinated. Biden also told them you can’t get covid if you’re vaccinated. In fact. Any time some one is caught violating mandates the vax crowd always says “they’re vaccinated”. They aren’t following mask requirements that have been put back in place.

          2.
Unknown side effects of covid vs Unknown side effects of vaccine and booster shots. So why are we pushing vaccines on kids when it isn’t necessary as they are the least vulnerable group?

          3. That the insurrection the fbi came out and said it wasn’t pre-planned as in just people got out of control? That also the one where they refuse to released the 14,000 hours of video footage for some odd reason.

          4. No. Covid mandates haven’t applied to everyone. Businesses who violated covid mandates and people were fine some even arrested. Name me 1 politician that was arrested for violating covid rules. Just 1. I can name a few people who got fines and were punished by the states.

          5. Just because they have done so doesn’t make it ethically or morally right. If the government is mandating vaccines someone needs to be held liable in the event something happens. Plain and simple.
