AL East Notes: Yankees, Barnes, Harvey

By Mark Polishuk | October 16, 2021 at 10:08pm CDT

If the Yankees pushed for one of the big shortstops in the free agent market, Joel Sherman of The New York Post believes Corey Seager would be the best fit, as his left-handed bat and contact skills would help a mostly right-handed Yankees lineup that contained plenty of swing-and-miss in 2021.  Marcus Semien is also a candidate, but Sherman isn’t as bullish on the chances of Carlos Correa, Trevor Story, or Javier Baez ending up in the Bronx.  “There seems to have been a steady falling out of love with Story” on the Yankees’ part, Sherman writes, while Baez drew some interest at the trade deadline but perhaps only as a short-term fix.  As for Correa, there might still be so much bad blood over the sign-stealing scandal that the Yankees might not want anything to do with a player who was such a prominent member of the 2017 Astros.

This assumes, of course, that New York will actually aim for one of the big names, rather than wait for highly-touted shortstop prospects Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza to reach the majors.  Seager may also be a good fit in this regard, Sherman opines, as Seager could eventually be moved over to third base.  Or, depending on how the new collective bargaining agreement alters business, the Yankees could just opt for a stopgap shortstop as a bridge to Volpe/Peraza and spend resources elsewhere.

More from around the AL East…

  • “The first four months, five months, everything was perfect.  The last six weeks anything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong,” Matt Barnes told Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, discussing the rough end to the season that turned the former Red Sox closer into a postseason question mark.  Barnes was enjoying a tremendous season until August, when he ran into some struggles on the mound and was then sidelined with a case of COVID-19.  If that wasn’t enough, Barnes revealed that he also suffered a self-inflicted left thumb injury in late September, as he sliced off the tip of his thumb while chopping peppers to make an omelet.  Barnes was able to keep playing, albeit with a bandage on his thumb and what Speier describes as “a hard plastic casing inside his glove so he can catch the ball without pain.”  Though Barnes was part of the roster for Boston’s wild card game victory over the Yankees, he wasn’t included on the ALCS roster and wasn’t originally on the ALDS roster until rejoining the team as an injury replacement.  Given the circumstances, it is difficult to see Barnes figuring into a potential World Series roster unless there’s another injury absence.
  • Between an oblique strain, a lat strain, and then a triceps strain that occurred while rehabbing the lat injury, Hunter Harvey pitched only 8 2/3 innings in 2021.  The 22nd overall pick of the 2013 draft, Harvey has been ravaged by a variety of injuries over his pro career, resulting in only 23 2/3 total MLB innings on his career resume.  “We’ll keep trying it until no teams want to try it anymore or until I figure out how to stay healthy. That’s my two options,” Harvey told MASNsports.com’s Roch Kubatko, and Harvey has confidence that he can prove himself as a reliable reliever for the Orioles if he can avoid the injured list.  Harvey admitted “there have been times I wanted to hang it up and not keep doing it anymore,” but he credited his father (former Angels and Marlins closer Bryan Harvey) with helping him stay motivated.  “He’s kind of talked me off that ledge a couple times, and he’s put that mindset in my head that it could be worse,” Harvey said.  “It just gets to the point now, it’s like, we’ll get through this and start back over and try it again.”

Harvey is only 26, his career isn’t by any means over. At this point I think he has strained every bone in his body

That would be great logic if bones were only allowed to be strained once in a lifetime. However, bones do not work that way. Once a bone is injured, it is far more susceptible to future injury. Harvey might get lucky and be able to hold himself together for a season, but I would be shocked if he ever did anything worthwhile in the majors.

He seems like he might be a good pitching coach one day though. Former top prospects that can’t stay healthy usually become the best pitching coaches.

We really could use a guy like Seager, for the reasons mentioned above. He ought to be our number one market target, to be totally honest. But the phrase “would be the best fit” scares me into thinking the team brass won’t chase him at all

Will the Yankees really take on another major long term contract when they will have to give Judge one after next season?

I don’t think the Yankees need to add another major contract, they need to improve their supporting cast around their core and they can do that without adding a Seager or Correa type.

I’m kind of torn on this, @Dunkington.

Part of my craves an old school free agency driven, big game, off-season. Sign Seager, Verlander, Marte, flip off the AL & call it good.

        But.
Was running through some lesser kind of guys with @Clip & @Joe. The Yanks could remake their lineup & bench completely for what one of the premium shortstops is going to get in AAV. That 25-30 mil would add multiple players that will help.

I’ve no problem with being a spoiled, entitled, greedy Yankee fan. Made peace with that a long time ago. So my druthers would be: Do Both! But Hal isn’t as loose with the purse strings. So.

Dunkin’: although I understand that sentiment regarding Judge, I believe the most reasonable thing to do is to give Judge a fair offer – I don’t think that fits an eight-year, $300M bill. Rather give him a reasonable five-year offer, maybe $150M, for example (I haven’t done any type of valuation in him, so bear with me on that number).

If he takes it and really wants to “stay in pinstripes forever” then great, but of a team wants to dole out $300M fit eight years for him and he leaves? Well as a huge Judge fan, and someone who cares less about Hal’s pocketbook savings, I’m really okay with that, because the latter is absurd imho, even if he is the “face of the franchise.”

As Ducky illustrated, if it’s between retaining Judge and getting what the roster needs to win, well, see ya, Aaron, thanks for the great memories and your classy, professional demeanor – we will miss ya. In fact, and I know I’m going to get beaten for saying this, if Judge isn’t going to stay, trade him and maximize the return on him in his walk year.

Additionally, Ducky, regarding the potential for trades, man Buxton would be a nice CF acquisition…. He’s 14.6M on BTV, and 1.000 OPS+ with 10 DRS? Uh, yep, we could do that!

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

I think I’ve told you this, but I live in Minneapolis now. Have for a awhile actually.

          Anyway.
I get Twins tix all the time (building materials reps, lumberyards, homeowners, etc). As such, I have seen him play out here a couple times.

First; he’s an extremely talented player & a blast to watch on the field. But he has as many – probably more – injury concerns than *any* of our outfielders. It’s crazy. He will be on a rehab assignment for a hamstring strain & break his toe. The kid really struggles to stay available.

His health is sort of a deal breaker for me, Clip.

Ducky – Have you gotten up to Paisley Park? That’s the main reason why I want to visit Minnesota some day, and check out Mall of America while I’m there.

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

I have. & the MOA is…well, a Really Big mall. Neither are anywhere that I frequent. MN has a lot of things much more interesting.

But…I honestly would prefer to keep the tourists out of those places & at the mall instead.

        • JoeBrady

I’m with you on the latter. As long as you have the core, you can fill in nicely with smaller pieces. Whether we win or not this year, I am happy with the RS direction. We still spend, but now we some kids supporting the process, and more kids coming up.

But just as importantly, we have almost nothing left irt l/t contracts. The question of extending the kids is a mere valuation/negotiation process, and nothing to do with payroll caps.

I have no problem with the vintage DBF wanting some checkbook diplomacy, but it is a lot easier of the focus is just buying the occasional over-the-top ace like Cole. For the NYY, guys like Cole are a slamdunk, so long as they don’t have 3 other $25M contracts to deal with.

        • Yankee Clipper

Yeah, you did. Okay, that’s not what we need; I was looking at the production side of things.

Someone mentioned a Bryce Harper trade if Judge doesn’t re-sign. Now, I don’t think that would/could happen or we would forfeit the Farm. But, what about the possibility of a trade for JT Realmuto? Especially if the Phillies are having another down year. I wonder if they would consider it, although I doubt it

This isn’t my idea either. I saw this on one of the online articles talking about the Phillies.

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

It’s actually quite a bit different than Judge.

Buxton has been done in by a series of strains, sprains, & tears. Besides some oblique stuff, Judge has had pretty fluky injuries; a chipped wrist bone due to an HBP, & a broken rib from a hustle play on D.

Not the same kind of injuries at all.
At this point, I am all for hanging onto Judge. Circumstances could certainly change that. But he is the type of player you build around.

        • Dunk Dunkington

I have to admit, I am a die hard Cubs fan and I really want Seager to be part of the next core, so maybe it is me trying to justify why the Yankees don’t need him and should stay away. Lol!!.
At the same time I don’t think the Yankees are in bad shape and have the pieces to contend and they should invest into a Stroman and the rest with Solid Vets like Marte and bring back Rizzo.

I totally agree about Judge, as you aware I am a Cubs fan who saw all the fans favorites get dealt this year, it was the right call and fully support it and their is a ton of anger from the fans that don’t understand what Hoyer has to do. The issue is we get it as fans who follow roster constructions, CBT concerns and etc. It is the casual fans that Hal also has to please and they will not take the time to understand why Hal let Judge walk and will be outraged also tough to let a top 5 selling jersey guy just walk like that too, Judge is good for business for the evil empire.

The wise move is to chase after Seager and let Judge walk after 2023 but I just don’t think Hal has it in him to let that happen.

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

I get it, @Dunkington. I do the same thing with free agent predictions.

It was a wild season for us, man. The ’21 Yanks were the streakiest team I’ve ever seen. A 13 game winning streak, a few 5 or more…but also go an entire month & not win a series. & ending in Fenway in the play-in game while the damn sox are still playing & ruining October baseball for everyone. Man.

On the heels of that, some of the Yankee fellas are seeing our squad perhaps a bit more negatively than is necessarily warranted. But: no. We are not a bad team. At all. Oddly enough, the pitching is in pretty good shape & we are coming off a 90+ win season.

& if Hal was willing to bring back Rizzo & sign Marte & Stroman, I wouldn’t care if we started Tyler Wade at SS. That would be an excellent offseason.

        • Dunk Dunkington

@Ducky I totally understand the frustration, Cubs were a very streaky team on offense before the fire sale. There is still time for the Yankees to right the ship and make s deep playoff run. With the CBT now being reset the sky should be the limit for the Yankees this offseason.

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

As a Cubs fan, were you in favor of blowing it up? Or would you rather have tried to keep it together & squeezed as many play-off runs as possible out of your core?

Liked what I saw out of Rizzo. He is a really nice complimentary bat to our lineup. & I know first is the least important defensive position but it sure is nice having a guy over there who can play it well. Plays it like a 3rd baseman. He is one guys I really hope the Yanks sign this winter.

  3. Kolukonu

I would not mind seeing the Yanks go after a SS that has a high contact/low K rate and more focus on defense. He can hit lower in the lineup, they don’t need to pay for a top SS at this point, such as Kevin Newman (7.4% K, solid defense up the middle, but lighter hitting player) or a Nicky Lopez (if its even possible to pry him away from KC).

    Reply
    • mlb1225

Newman doesn’t even budge the needle. He’s a bench player at the very best. Sure, great glove and low strikeout rate, but there ain’t no way you can play a guy with a 54 wRC+ regularly, regardless of how little he goes down on strike three.

I’d love to see the Yankees shell out yet another long term, high AAV contract for one player. They already have Stanton, Cole & to a lesser extent DJL, which comes in around $85M or so per year for just those 3 players. Add another $24M+ Seager and those 4 guys will cost more than 35% of other MLB teams’ entire payrolls! Then a hole opens again at SS when Seager’s defense slips and he has to move to 3B and the Yankees will already have 2-3 3rd basemen on the team. It seems like Cashman can’t get out of his own way lately. He just wants to appease the fan base with another big contract. The wheels on the bus go round and round.

Judge won’t get that much total money since he’ll be hitting free agency as a 31 year old. His AAV will be high but it will be a shorter term probably similar to George Springer

That would be a good question to ask in a chat by someone who gets their questions answered, how much will Judge sign for.

I say 8 years @ $34M with a 9th year team option or vesting option.

Besides being one of the game’s best, he’s way way too valuable for the Yankees to let him go. He’s the face of the franchise, the amount of revenue he brings in on merchandising alone is worth millions each year.

Way too much. He’s a tricky player to sign, since he never plays a full season. He’s averaged 109 games over the past four years. They are also not going to pay Judge to age 38.

The Springer contract is a good target.

Ronk – Like I said, I’m thinking Judge signs this winter for 8 years guaranteed which would be through his Age 37 season.. With an option year tacked onto the end.

No one is giving Judge $200m+ never mind $300m unless the new CBA changes things big-time. if that happens, the Yankees will bid against themselves and keep the fans happy.

Seager’s (and the other big SS free agents) took a hit big-time when Washington traded Turner to the Dodgers. it will be interesting to see how the free agents do this off season. Unless there’s a miraculous new CBA, I’m expecting things to move very slowly.

Oh yes, I agree. Come on Yanks. Put another crazy contract on the board. Only thing I don’t agree with is I do not believe Seager will be that bad contract. I think this past injury was just a roadblock. He comes back raking next season but hopefully not for the Yankees.

Do Yankees fans ever enter an offseason and say ‘We shouldn’t sign one of the biggest names in FA, and consolidate the payroll’? Not to my memory. The team building in baseball has changed, and Yankees fans aren’t seeing it. (for the most part)

Sure, sure. Yankee fans don’t care at all about the Red Sox. I come from The Bronx, and I’ve never met a Yankee fan that didn’t hate the Red Sox, with a passion, but maybe it is a neighborhood thing.

Heard a funny call into FAN on Friday. The guys on the radio were discussing whether to root for/against the Astros or RS. The caller was screaming at them that no true Yankee fan could ever, ever root for the RS.

Perhaps there is something noble about being above such things, but I find much more enjoyable knowing that fans DBF (and the other 99%) would be pleased to see us go 0-162.

In regard tothe NYY record, I never root for 0-162. That’s too simplistic. A true fan roots for 90-72. It’s good enough so they wind up with the #20 draft pick, not good enough for them to make the playoffs, but good enough for Hal to think they have a good team and won’t crazy shopping.

IRT Xander, I always felt the same way about Donnie Baseball. He was so good, in every way possible, that I wouldn’t even want him on the Red Sox. I loved him as a player, but it would’ve been against the laws of nature for him to be a Red Sox. A bit like when Bernie got a huge offer from the RS. He went back to GS, told him about the offer, said he really, really didn’t want to play for us, and how close can the NYY come to that offer.

There are some boundaries that should never be crossed.

@ Joe Says-The way I see it is that, as a Raiders fan, I always check the Raiders score first. But I also check the Chiefs, the Chargers, and the Broncos. And, like all true Americans, I check the Cowboy score to make sure they lose.

But, as our main contender, it sounds odd that I wouldn’t keep track of what the Yankees are doing.

          =======================================
A little of that, sure. I’m logical enough to know that, if we are both spending $200M each year, we’re not likely tp continue to dominate. This will go back and forth, As long as the NYY don’t win another 3 WS before we win another, this will still be our century.

What made the late 70s so great and tough to watch was then the Sox, Yankees and Baltimore were three of the best if not the best teams in the sport. it was great for fans and such has been only matched in 2004 and 2004. That said. the Yankees losing to FL in 2003 takes a little of the pain of losing in 03 away. 2004 was a season for all seasons but imagine if the Yankees were the defending champs when it happened…

If you want “right near”, my family lived right next to St. Jerome’s. We moved to the North Bronx when I was young, so I never had the opportunity to walk it, but I’m guessing (161-136) + 2 blocks from the Grand Concourse, can’t be much more than a mile.

This might be the best part of being a RS fan in that I can go into any pub in America, and someone in there will either love the Yankees or hate the Yankees, and you can sit and BS for hours.

There are a couple in Manhattan. I’ve been to one of them. Pre-game, I usually hang out at some Dominican joint on 157th. $20 for a bucket of 6 Heineken’s. Regular folks kind of place. I went to Billy’s when it first opened, but they raised the price of beer astronomically. Nice place, but not at triple the cost of the Dominican joint. And I like the people at the Dominican joint better.

Story will get signed for big money. In the three seasons prior to 2021, Story had a 6.5 bWAR/650 PAs. Even without regard for the Mile High component, that’s really good. Even with his ‘off’ season in 2021, he still had a 4.2 bWAR. In a world that makes Lindor $341M/10, the opening bid for Story can’t be less than $200M/8.

Or, from a RS perspective, if JD opts out, I’d move Bogaerts to 3rd, and be glad to give $200M/8 to Story.

$300 million for Judge is LAUGHABLE. Also Seager isn’t coming to a team that has no chance of winning a title. When your team is loaded with HR or bust players , no speed and no pitching behind spin rate cheater Gerritt Cole it is NOT HAPPENING.

Players sign with bad, average or good teams pretty equally. The idea that top tier player only sign with win now teams is not a thing.

Players sign where they want and who pays the most. Unless they are a 37 y/o chasing a ring, an 8 year deal is long enough that any team can compete or stop competing during that period

I can see Judge signing with the Mariners and getting traded to the Mets but I don’t Cano that for sure. I don’t really see Judge as the face of the franchise the way Jeter was. Plus, this team is all purchased and traded for pieces that don’t fit together very well. There’s no real personality other than Gardner and he’s practically done. They’ve got a lot of work to do if they want to be something besides a boring franchise that spends a lot. Maybe they will change it up but habits have been formed. They’re kind of caught in a circle of decency short of excellence. They’re still very good but not great.

That said, there’s not a lot of greatness around. Mostly shades of good to very good to really good. I think that’s what tempts teams to think they can spend their way to success. It doesn’t always work that way.

Guys … when Stanton signed his 13-year mega contract, he had played in less than 124 games in each of the prior two years (notice I said years, not seasons).

          2012 – Knee injury
          2012 – Abdomen strain
          2013 – Shoulder injury
          2013 – Thigh injury
          2013 – Ankle injury

Not to mention the facial fractures in 2014 from getting hit by a pitch a couple months before signing the contract. They had no idea how the HBP would affect his vision and hitting when he recovered from it, but they still gave him the contract because he was a great player and franchise icon.

So needless to say, injuries aren’t usually as big a factor in contract negotiations as you think. Judge proved this year he can stay healthy, that’s all that matters.

The problem is, it has set the bar for {expectations} going forward for players. Now, Mr. My Time Correa thinks he’s worth half-a-billion dollars because he has good stats. Sorry, but, no. And with cheating offensively creating his negotiating leverage, most of which comes from his offensive prowess, I don’t honk he will get close to what he thinks he will.

LAD is out. Yankees – out. Two biggest negotiators out right off the top. Giants? Maybe, but I don’t see them going 10/300+. Rangers, could be in, Cubs could be in, but none of those will come close to that amount and bid against themselves for him.

I am biased against Correa. Most signings I can step back and be objective, and I am trying to be here as well. But, I can’t stand Correa, maybe he is that and more. You tell me.

Now the Yankees are looking at a left handed hitting SS when the Yankees should of kept Didi. Why would Seager leave LA? IMO Correa stays probably why Houston didn’t keep Springer to save money. Story goes to the Rangers. If Wade and Velasquez could hit more they could make a great platoon until Volpe is ready. I’d see what it would take to get Oaklands duo Chapman and Olson. I’m waiting for Sanchez to be DFA like they did with Greg Bird. That needs to be the first dominoe to fall.

Didi was awful on both sides of the ball and at age 32 I don’t see a bounce back as very likely. He’s got a long way to bounce, at least. As for Lindor, as a Mets fan I say take him please. Just pay that terrible contract. And Lindor’s season wasn’t that far off from the player he’s been for a while now. You expect him to bounce back all the way to 2018? If so there’s a lot of delusional Met fans who would agree.

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

The ability to hit a home run in the playoffs is even more important than stealing a base though. Some #’s:

Thus far the winning team has hit fewer home runs in exactly ONE game. NLDS game 5.

In the NL, home runs accounted for ALL the runs in multiple games.

A single home run has been the difference THREE times.

Power plays. Always, but even more so in the playoffs when the quality of pitching & defense goes up. So much easier to work a walk & hit a big fly off Scherzer than to string 3 singles & some steals together for those same 2 runs.

(hot take warning) Power is the reason the Braves have the best chance of anyone left to knock off the Dodgers.

But I can’t help it because I think he’s lost. Had me thinking he was back early in the season, but fell off again.

Reality is he will be here next year, absent a trade, which I don’t honestly think will come to fruition. My hope is he figures something out and has a come-back season. I am notably hard on this team when players have down years, but I have watched and rooted for them since I was four years old. The team that signs Seager and Correa will win the off-season. These are the players you spend money on – two players who perform no matter the moment. Glad, the Mets jumped on Lindor early – albeit if they were smart, they would sign Seager to play 2nd.

Ducky shot some ideas out about some key trade acquisitions we could get to instantaneously make our team better without breaking bank – for example, Pail DeJong, who was posted by one of the Cards fans. Great idea, like the player, instant improvement.

Me, I keep wanting to spend Hal’s money, but in this operating age, I think Ducky is much closer to the mark on the course of action Cashman could take to make us instant contenders.

I say extend Judge. If Seager is wthin the budget after that, great. If not, let Velasquez be the place holder. His sample size was small, but we won with him playing due to defensive improvement and forced situational hitting. Between Velasquez, Urshella and Wade, we will do better than wasting a roster spot on Andrelton Simmons. When Urshella plays short DJL can play 3rd. Short is not our position of need.
